(Welcome to I Didn't Know What Seasonal Anime to Watch, So I Asked /Film for Help and They Gave Me a List, a regular column dedicated to helping choose what anime shows to watch each season.)
At last, we've come to the final anime season of 2023. This has been a tremendous year for animation -- one that saw streaming produce some stone-cold masterpieces, some exquisite international collaborations, one of the greatest anime seasons of all time, the end to a cultural phenomenon, and also plenty of fresh discoveries and original stories. After the fall 2022 season saw an astonishing number of certified bangers (including many of that year's best shows), 2023 wasn't too far behind. It was hard to pick just five shows from this season, as there was something for every type of fan. In the end, however, there were five shows that simply stood above the rest.

Just when we all thought there was no way to beat the embarrassment of anime riches that was 2021, along comes 2022 to blow every expectation away with so many fantastic shows it was nearly impossible even to begin to try and stay up to day with all of them.
There were giant favorites shocking audiences by returning with their best seasons yet, hugely anticipated sequels delivering tons of thrills, brand new shows succeeding expectations, and even entirely original shows full of surprises. No matter your taste, there truly was something for everyone.
This makes it rather tough to even begin to boil down all the great anime of the year into a best-of list, but that won't stop us from trying. Here is the best anime of the year, ranked.

The concept of the last or only human is a classic science fiction set-up, one we most often see in the post-apocalyptic genre, which often sees a human wandering a dystopian landscape, in search for meaning and connection in a grim reality. In Eden, Netflix’s new Japanese-language original anime, we get a clever twist on the old convention: Here, humans disappeared 1,000 years prior, and Earth is populated by a few settlements of robots. These robots spend their days growing apples, an act driven by their initial creation by and for humans. When a pair of apple-harvesting robots, A37 and E92, find a human baby, Sara, they go against the rules of Eden-3, where they live, to follow their nature: to protect and care for this tiny human, even when everything they have ever been told about humanity has been framed in our species’ capacity for destruction.
