The release of “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” has been delayed one week from Sept. 17 to Sept. 24.
The sequel, which stars Tom Hardy, was most recently pushed to September from June 25 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The one-week delay of “Venom 2” means that the movie will no longer premiere on the same day as murder mystery “Death of the Nile” and the animated children’s film “The Boss Baby: Family Business.” Other films opening on Sept. 24 include “Dear Evan Hansen” and “The Sopranos” prequel film “The Many Saints of Newark.”
However, its late September release date will still ensure the film has ample space between other big names like James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” on Aug. 6 and Denis Villeneuve’s long-awaited “Dune” on Oct. 1.
The follow-up to 2018’s “Venom,” directed by Andy Serkis, sees Hardy reprising his role as the alien symbiote, who originally appears as one of...

Tencent Pictures, the film-making arm of Chinese tech giant Tencent, has the potential to be hugely influential on its home turf due to parent company’s domination of social media and gaming. Tencent’s massive scale – market capitalization over $700 billion makes it one of the world’s largest corporations – means it has the potential for huge overseas impact as well.
Recent setbacks at two of its Chinese subsidiaries led to a restructuring of its local film business. The result of that process was a streamlined strategy and the announcement last week of a bumper slate with 43 film and TV projects.
The lineup also appeared to re-confirm the company’s continuing interest in international projects.
Most controversially, there’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” which has already made headlines for digitally removing Japanese and Taiwanese flags from the back of Tom Cruise’s flight jacket to appease Chinese censors. Ironically, the patriotic American...

An angelic chorus of young boys set the scene at a big Tencent press conference held last week to announce new production strategies and a huge slate of upcoming content.
“The blood which fills our chest has boiled over, we must struggle for the truth! Arise, slaves, arise, we shall be the masters of the world!” they warbled, singing the version of “The Internationale,” the Socialist anthem, translated into Chinese from Russian in the 1920s by a poet friend of Mao Zedong.
Though the song was also taken up in 1989 by the pro-democracy demonstrators in Tiananmen Square, it was here deployed as a segue into a half-hour presentation on one of the tech giant’s biggest upcoming film projects: “1921,” a blockbuster about the founding of the Chinese Communist Party intended as a tribute on the 100th anniversary of the occasion.

Tencent Pictures this week stepped out alongside fellow Tencent subsidiaries New Classics Media and China Literature (aka Yuewen Media) to present for the first time a joint, collaborative film and TV production strategy.
Tencent Pictures and Hong Kong-listed e-book platform China Literature were both established in 2015. Production firm New Classics Media was established in 2007 and was acquired by China Literature in 2018 for $2.25 billion. Up until now, Tencent had a tendency to pit the three against each other as competitors, and left them to undertake similar business endeavors independently without overarching coordination.
But in the wake of China Literature’s serious losses in the first half of the year, the company is shifting gears to think more about how they can work together more collaboratively.
Tencent Group VP and Tencent Pictures CEO Cheng Wu (aka Edward Cheng) took the stage at a press conference Monday in Shanghai to describe the triumvirate as now being a “troika.

A slate of Chinese propaganda films rubs shoulders with high-profile Hollywood movies on Tencent Pictures’ upcoming lineup.
The firm confirmed its investment in U.S. projects including TriStar Pictures’ “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” a film about beloved TV host Mr. Rogers, starring Tom Hanks; “Monster Hunter,” Paul W.S. Anderson’s next film adaptation of a video game; “Wish Dragon,” being co-produced by Sony Pictures Animation and China’s Base Animation; Paramount Pictures’ “Terminator: Dark Fate,” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and “Top Gun: Maverick,” with Tom Cruise and Jennifer Connelly.
All the major private-sector Chinese films studios are this year involved in patriotic pictures that not long ago would have been the preserve of China’s state-owned propaganda machine.
But Tencent appears to be playing it especially safe politically this year with a domestic slate of film and TV choices designed to appeal to Chinese authorities. At an event Monday...

A presentation at the Shanghai International Film Festival on Sunday shed light on the welter of propaganda films that will compete with Hollywood blockbusters for the attention of Chinese cinema goers in the second half of this year.
This year is laden with political significance for China’s ruling Communist Party. It is 100 years since the May Fourth movement in which students led protests against foreign colonial powers in China. In October China will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
“The Climbers” starring “Wolf “Warriors” and Chinese patriotic film icon Wu Jing, is a production by Shanghai Film Group that releases at the end of this month. “The mountain climbers represent the Chinese people’s spirit of conquering challenges,” said Sfg chairman Ren Zhonglun.

Sony’s Men in Black: International will hit theaters in China on June 14, opening day and date with the pic’s North American bow.
Unadjusted for inflation, Mib 3 was released in China 2012, making $77.2M, the pic’s largest territory outside U.S./Canada ($179M).
Men in Black: International has the added camaraderie of Thor: Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, and that Marvel pic grossed $112.2M in China, so the hope here is that star power carries over there with Men in Black: International.
The reboot of the Mib franchise follows Agent M (Thompson) and Agent H (Hemsworth) as they track down a mole in the Men in Black organization. F. Gary Gray directs from a script by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway, which is based off the Malibu Comic by Lowell Cunningham. Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald produce. China’s Tencent is teaming with Paramount on Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, and next year’s Top Gun sequel.
Tencent Pictures is acting as an investor and co-marketing partner on the two films with the Transformers origin story set for release on December 21 in the U.S. and January 4 in the Middle Kingdom.
It is the latest Hollywood investments from the Chinese firm, which has previously collaborated on Warcraft, Kong: Skull Island, Wonder Woman, La La Land, Ready Player One and Venom. The latter has scored an extended run in China after grossing $263.6M locally.
The Transformers origin story will look to tap into China’s Transformers faithful: The past two films in that Michael Bay franchise, The Last Knight and Age Of Extinction made $229M and $320M, respectively. Starring Hailee Steinfeld (Pitch Perfect 3) John Cena (Trainwreck) and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. (Spiderman: Homecoming), Bumblebee is directed by Travis Knight, with...

James Cameron and Tim Miller's Terminator reboot is coming in November 2019. Here's everything you need to know.
Terminator: Dark Fate is the next installment in the time-traveling cyborg franchise, and it's not what you were expecting.
Franchise creator James Cameron has recruited Deadpool director Tim Miller "to direct a reboot, a conclusion" to the Terminator franchise, with Cameron acting as a "godfather." This is a loaded term, which hopefully is code for creative consultant as much as executive producer.
The previous franchise installment, Terminator Genisys has been terminated from the timeline (sorry), as has the two films and television series before that. Terminator: Dark Fate acts as a true continuation (and ending?) of the story that was started by the first two films in 1984 and 1991. And if that wasn't any clearer, the fact that it features the return of Linda Hamilton to the role...
