One of the world’s greatest living playwrights has returned to Broadway. Over a decade since his last effort, Tom Stoppard has come back with epic play “Leopoldstadt,” a sprawling family drama based in part on his own family’s history during the early-twentieth century. The drama opened at the Longacre Theatre on Oct. 2.
Unspooling over five decades, the play follows the Jewish Merz family and their many relations as the antisemitism of the Holocaust penetrates their bourgeois home in Vienna. Directed by two-time Tony nominee Patrick Marber, “Leopoldstadt” boasts a cast of nearly three dozen, led by David Krumholtz, Caissie Levy, and Brandon Uranowitz.
Stoppard’s latest received near-universal raves from critics. In his Critic’s Pick review, Jesse Green (New York Times) calls the play “harrowing” and says it features the dramatist’s “trademark bravura” and “kaleidoscopic technique.” Commending the entire ensemble, he writes, “The acting is excellent across the board,...

Predicting the outcome of the design categories at the Tony Awards proves a challenge every year. But if you want to perform well in our prediction contest, you’ll need to ace these tough below-the-line races. Here is a rundown of how the competition is shaking out in each of the four design awards for the plays.

Usually there is some enormous rotating set in contention that becomes the obvious winner. Not so this year, as this scenic design trophy is truly anyone’s for the taking. Rob Howell is being widely predicted to win for “The Ferryman.” That show is the likely Best Play winner, so Howell could come along for the ride with his intricately detailed Irish farmhouse with its exaggerated ceiling. When set designer Christine Jones won a Tony for her work on “American Idiot,” she felt “there couldn’t be anything better career-wise.” Then along came “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two,” the biggest franchise title and most expensive play ever produced on Broadway, fresh from its enormously successful run in London.
And when Jones, who’s now Tony-nominated again, describes the show as “a huge undertaking,” she’s not exaggerating. Together, the two parts are more than five hours long, “with tons of locations and lots of spectacular magical moments and transformations,” she says. “But [there are] also many more personal and smaller scenes, so we needed it to be epic and also incredibly intimate. It was a very tall order.”
Other challenges included staging the monster production in the newly renovated Lyric Theatre, which reduced its massive seating capacity from 1,900 to about 1,500. “The material is so beloved by fans,...

Jk Rowling is ready to share the "untold part" of Harry Potter's story in a new stage play in London next year.
First announced in 2013, the production will receive its world premiere in summer 2016 at the Palace Theatre in the West End. It is called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and will not be a prequel as originally rumoured.
Rowling is working on the show with the "dream team" of writer Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany, and explained that theatre is the "only proper medium" for the story.
"I'm very excited to confirm today that a new play called Harry Potter and the #CursedChild will be opening in London next year," the author wrote on Twitter.
"It will tell a new story, which is the result of a collaboration between writer Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany and myself. It has been a huge pleasure to share with them (and soon,...

The task of transforming a popular movie into a stage musical is a tough challenge that has brought successes (Billy Elliot), and disappointments (Made in Dagenham), so Gurinder Chadha's idea of bringing her 2002 film Bend It Like Beckham to the West End was an intriguing one.
The majority of the feel and the plot of the original film remains in the musical. Set in suburban west London, it focuses on Jess, who worships David Beckham and has a desire to play football that doesn't fit in with her Punjabi Indian parents' plans.
She secretly plays for her local women's football team and soon falls in love with coach Joe, which creates a difficult love triangle with her best friend Jules, a role which helped transform Keira Knightley into an international star.
The film's musical leaning lends itself well for a musical adaptation, and composer Howard Goodall and lyricist Charles Hart...
