Rob Moose, a violinist and composer who has arranged music for everyone from Miley Cyrus to Anohni and the Johnsons, collaborated with some of his famous friends on his upcoming first solo release, the EP Inflorescence. The latest single, “Extract,” finds him teaming with Sara Bareilles. The full EP comes out on Aug. 11.
The song feels like a cross between easy listening, as Bareilles croons, and orchestral new music. “To say at least I’m alive seems so melodramatic,” she sings as orchestra strings flutter behind her on the track.

Every track on My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross feels like a Greek statue frozen in some tragic visage of horror. Anohni’s voice sounds delicate, angry, and exhausted, as she grieves track by track — for the unfulfilled promises of civil rights, for friends lost to drugs and depression, for the immolation of a world succumbing to ecocide. On one song, “Why Am I Alive Now?” her voice quivers and keens as she regards the discord closing in on her (leaves fall off trees, smoke chokes the air,...

Rob Moose and Bon Iver have teamed up for the new collaborative single “Marvel Room,” taken from the former’s upcoming debut EP, Inflorescence.
In a statement, Rob Moose — whose work as an arranger with Bon Iver stretches as far back as the band’s 2011 self-titled LP — called frontman Justin Vernon “a creative north star” who “coaxes creative breakthroughs out of me.” Fittingly, “Marvel Room” began as an “idea” while recording 2019’s i,i, “though it wasn’t one we approached together during the arranging process.”
“I encountered it during a hard drive deep dive, and was intrigued by its propulsive rhythms and baritone incantations,” he continued. “We passed the track back and forth a few times as the form and content emerged. He asked me for more subdivided rhythm in places, and I wondered if he might throw in a touch of sparkle toward the end. A year later,...

Phoebe Bridgers has re-released the fan-favorite deep cut “Waiting Room” on Bandcamp, with all proceeds benefiting the charity Music Will.
Years before Stranger in the Alps and Punisher made her indie famous, “Waiting Room” had all the trappings of Bridgers’ ballad songwriting. The track first appeared on a 2015 compilation organized by the California recording studio Lost Ark, which was removed from Spotify earlier this year.
Fortunately, it’s now up on Bandcamp, and if fans opt to purchase the song, its proceeds will go to the music education nonprofit Music Will. As the largest music nonprofit in the United States, the program provides teacher training to expand music programs across the country.
Earlier this month, Bridgers went into the vaults to rework her song “Wasted” alongside her longtime collaborator, the arranger Rob Moose. She also appeared on Arlo Parks’ new song “Pegasus.”

Seven years ago, Trevor Powers cut the cord on Youth Lagoon. In 2011, the Boise native, 22 at the time, had shared his celestial, entrancing dream-pop debut, The Year of Hibernation, with the world, swiftly scoring him Tumblr-era indie reverence. Powers released two more records as Youth Lagoon, the last being Savage Hills Ballroom in 2015, before calling off the project. “There is nothing left to say through Youth Lagoon,” he wrote at the time.

Anohni has announced My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross, the first studio album under her Anohni and the Johnsons moniker in more than a decade. The LP is out July 7th via Secretly Canadian and Rough Trade, and features the lead single, “It Must Change.”
In a press release, Anohni explained that Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On was “a really important touchstone” while creating the new album, adding, “Some of these songs respond to global and environmental concerns first voiced in popular music over 50 years ago.”
Anohni began working on My Back Was a Bridge with soul producer Jimmy Hogarth in 2022, when they created a series of demos together before assembling a studio band including Leo Abrahams, Chris Vatalaro, Sam Dixon, and string arranger Rob Moose to record the project. Pre-orders are ongoing.
“I want the record to be useful,” Anohni said about the album.

A sallow, elderly woman gets a Phoebe Bridgers makeover in the video for “Wasted,” a track off composer Rob Moose’s upcoming Inflorescence solo EP that features the singer-songwriter. Tattooed hands apply makeup, a “wasted” colorful necklace, and even a grill to the woman’s teeth as Bridgers sings, “Now I’m wasted, wastin’ all of my breath/Wasted again” over Moose’s sparkling, expanding strings.
“Rob is my son,” Bridgers said in a statement. “That’s an inside joke, but there is a deeper connection we share musically, which resembles being blood related.

Phoebe Bridgers fans are in for a treat with “Wasted,” a new studio recording of an old relic reimagined by arranger/longtime Bridgers collaborator Rob Moose. Check it out below.
“Wasted” was written by Bridgers’ bandmate Marshall Vore. In Moose’s version, the track rests on soaring, heartbreaking strings as the artist sings, “I used to have the energy to get mad/ Used to know how to say sorry/ But now I’m back with none of that.”
Despite its vulnerability, Bridgers focused on her friendship with Moose when discussing “Wasted” in a statement. “Rob is my son,” she said. “That’s an inside joke but there is a deeper connection we share musically which resembles being blood related.”
For his part, Moose offered more insight into the track. “’Wasted’ came my way in 2019,” he said. “I first started to tinker with it on a retreat to Orcas Island, with...

Dreaming of David, the album Ryan Beatty released in the early weeks of 2020, featured a bold declaration on the single “Patchwork,” where he promised: “This is not my last masterpiece/I am Michelangelo.” Three years later, the 27-year-old singer and songwriter is following through on his word. On April 28, Beatty will release his third studio album, Calico.

Phoebe Bridgers and Phoebe Waller-Bridge have finally collaborated, with the Fleabag star directing the video for Bridgers’ “Savior Complex.”
Shot in black-and-white and released on Facebook, the clip stars Normal People actor Paul Mescal, who previously starred in the Rolling Stones’ video for “Scarlet.” A bruised Mescal and a dog are seen on a beach, as Bridgers appears in several scenes as the “savior complex,” driving by, appearing as a hotel clerk, and more.
In an interview with Rolling Stone last summer, Bridgers spoke of Waller-Bridge and their name similarity.
