It would be reductive to say podcasts are having a moment right now. The industry, which is expected to generate 4 billion in revenue by 2024, can trace its roots back to the days of radio, when creators were making podcasts long before Ben Hammersley coined the name. But the format’s impact and moneymaking potential have arguably never been higher, as evidenced by the entry of new megawatt voices like Meghan Markle, whose Archetypes dominated the charts shortly after launch. For this year’s inaugural Podcast Power Players list, THR examined the medium’s current landscape, taking reach and influence into account to determine the leading dealmakers and front-facing creatives pushing the industry forward. — J. Exclusive: The story of Phil Spector, murderer and musical genius, is being told through a new narrative podcast series from the team behind Disgraceland and iHeartRadio.
Blood on the Tracks launches August 12 and features the fictionalized voices of the likes of Lenny Bruce, Ronnie Spector, Ike Turner, Keith Richards, John Lennon and Debbie Harry talking about the Wall of Sound creator and Let It Be producer.
It comes after iHeartRadio and Disgraceland creator and host Jake Brennan teamed up last year to create a slate of shows through Double Elvis Productions.
Brennan told Deadline that Spector’s life was the “perfect mix” of music and true crime.
He said that he has paid particularly attention to the sound of the podcast. “I wanted the show to sound new, it sounds unlike any podcast you’ve ever heard, I hope, if I’m doing my job correctly. I wanted to take...

In case you haven’t noticed, Netflix has this little feature which allows you to see which shows and films are most popular with audiences. Updated every day, these top ten lists give subscribers an overview of what various countries are watching. Of course, Netflix knew this information from the very beginning and it was precisely this informational edge that helped the streamer triumph over its competitors.
Usually, the lists are comprised of some pretty unsurprising entries. Recent toppers, for instance, include the Nickelodeon animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, whose arrival on Netflix took the world by storm, as well as hit shows like Money Heist and 13 Reasons Why and popular films like Despicable Me and 365 Dni. Today, however, these standard entries are joined by a pretty unusual one, as rounding off the Top 10 movies list at the bottom spot in #10 is a little-known horror pic from 2013 titled Dark Skies.

Exclusive: The Nashville trio of creator-executive producer Callie Khouri, producer Michael Lohmann and Season 1 executive music producer T Bone Burnett are reuniting for another music-driven drama series.
Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment has acquired the rights to Jake Brennan’s music and true-crime podcast Disgraceland for a TV series written by Khouri, Lohmann and Brennan, with Burnett overseeing the music.
Disgraceland, which will be taken to the premium cable and streaming marketplace shortly, is a music and true-crime television show about musicians getting away with murder and behaving very badly.
It stems from an original idea by Lohmann based on the podcast. He reached out to his former Nashville colleagues, the husband-and-wife duo of Oscar winners Khouri and Burnett, and took the project to Kapital Entertainment, where he serves as head of production.
Launched independently in 2018, the Disgraceland podcast, created and hosted by Brennan, quickly went to No. 7 on the Apple Podcast chart.

Back in October 2014, Netflix announced a pact with AwesomenessTV to bring the popular 1950s comic strip Richie Rich to the streaming platform as a kids’ TV show. Now, the updated retelling has ten episodes available on Netflix as of February 20, 2015.
The original Richie Rich featured the titular character as the son of rich parents, but Netflix’s version finds Richie (played by Dark Skies’s Jake Brennan) as a self-made entrepreneur. The youngster became a trillionaire after selling the green technology he invented because he stashed away his dinner vegetables instead of eating them.
Now, Richie now drives a mini Lamborghini around the huge house he shares with his father (Kiff VandenHeuvel), sister Harper (Lauren Taylor), friend Murray (Joshua Carlon), and friend Darcy (Jenna Ortega). There’s also Richie’s female robot assistant Irona (Brooke Wexler).

Netflix has picked up 21 episodes of a live-action Richie Rich series remake from DreamWorks Animation's AwesomenessTV. Richie Rich features an updated take on the one percenter spoiled brat character. According to THR, it will follow the characters adventures as he is making a movie, and will travel the world including Antarctica, while meeting celebrities along the way. It seems like the majority of kids shows that my kids watch on the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon these days revolves around wealthy rich and famous kids.
Macaulay Culkin starred in a live action film adaptation in 1994, and it was as awful as a movie could possibly get.

Spring Breakers (18)
(Harmony Korine, 2012, Us) Selena Gomez, James Franco, Gucci Mane. 94 mins
The new American dream/nightmare of the endless beach party is both celebrated and satirised in Korine's woozy Florida tale. The story is fittingly loose – four naive teens turn to criminal means to fund their hedonism – but it's more of an experience: a dubstep-tracked collage of neon, Day-Glo and tanned flesh, all facilitated by Franco's fantastically watchable gangsta rapper.
A Late Quartet (15)
(Yaron Zilberman, 2012, Us) Christopher Walken, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener. 106 mins
A respected New York string quartet is struck by an excess of issues here: terminal illness, infidelity, professional jealousy, you name it. Without the distinguished cast, its highbrow melodramas would seem ludicrous.

The Expatriate (15)
(Philipp Stölzl, 2012, Us/Bel/Can/UK) Aaron Eckhart,...

Modern horror is a little light on big names but one who should certainly be bigger is Jason Blum. He’s not exactly a household name but a man who almost single-handed seems to be responsible for virtually all the theatrically released horror content of the last few years, a man who can count the Paranormal Activity films, the Insidious (soon to be) franchise, last year’s well received Sinister and even Barry Levinson’s eco-horror The Bay among his successes. While not all of his films hit (the forthcoming Lords of Salem appears to have attained anti-buzz for instance), he still seems to be a man who takes horror seriously and seems to see it as much as a legitimate genre as...

A protracted and tedious build up leads to a mildly unnerving pay-off in this largely uninspired horror movie. It fluctuates between generic scares and misplaced attempts to explore the psychological effects of a suspected alien visitation on a small family living in a quiet American suburb.
The cash-strapped Barrett family, spearheaded by Daniel (Josh Hamilton) and Lacy (Keri Russell), are at the centre of proceedings as strange things start to happen to them and their household. Lacy starts headbutting a window, a fleet of avian creatures perform a Hitchcockian homage by flying into their house en masse, while one of their annoying sprogs apes Torchwood: Children Of Earth by letting out wide-mouthed piercing screams while under possession. That child really should've paraphrased that show's catchphrase too, booming "we are boring" instead...
