David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

Sunday’s 75th Writers Guild of America Awards will conclude the guild season (and a four-guild kudos weekend). Will they portend good things to come at the Oscars for the winners?
“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, and “Women Talking,” written by Sarah Polley, are projected to win the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay prizes, respectively. The caveat, of course, is that neither is facing its top Oscar competition at WGA due to the guild’s eligibility requirements. Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin” script, which won the Golden Globe and BAFTA, is Awol in original, as is Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness.” And BAFTA’s adapted screenplay champ “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, is ineligible, along with Oscar nominee “Living.”

Writer and director Tony Gilroy, who most recently created Andor for Disney+, sees “chaos” reshaping the entertainment industry. The good kind.
“We’re in a total free-form right now. I don’t think anything matters whatsoever,” he said during a WGA-hosted panel in New York. “I think what’s happening right now is not just happening on the screen or on the page or in this room. I think it’s happening in business as well, which we’re all going to be at the meeting — you know, the strike and everything — I think it’s absolute and utter chaos right now. I think anything goes. I don’t think there are any rules. I think it’s so frickin’ exciting that it doesn’t matter if you — two episodes, an episode and a half, five episodes, this, that, a play — it doesn’t matter! I don’t think there are any rules.

Exclusive: Madeleine George, playwright and writer on Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, has been newly selected as the 2021 recipient of the Hermitage Major Theater Award, a national jury-selected prize that offers one of the largest non-profit theater commissions in the country.
George will receive a cash prize of 35,000, as well as a residency at the Hermitage in Sarasota County, Florida, as well as a developmental workshop in a major arts capital such as New York, Chicago, or London in the fall of 2023.
“I was surprised and thrilled to get the news about the Hermitage Major Theater Award,” said George in a statement. “It’s such an honor to be joining in the Hermitage’s awe-inspiring family of artists, and I’m excited to have resources and time to put towards my commissioned play, which has been on my mind for a while and which I’m eager to share with the world.

You made it through the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Directors Guild Awards, and the Producers Guild Awards, too. The wait for the Oscars is almost over, but one more major guild had yet to give out its trophies before the Academy Awards. Tonight, Hollywood’s top writers came together for the Writers Guild of America Awards, which honored the finest achievements in film and television writing.
On the film side, the nominees were actually quite different from what you’ll see at the Oscars next week. In the Original Screenplay category, “Licorice Pizza,” “Don’t Look Up,” and “King Richard” were still nominated, but “Belfast” and “The Worst Person in the World” were replaced with “Being the Ricardos.” The Adapted Screenplay category was even more distinct, with only two Oscar contenders (“Dune” and “Coda”) nominated.

Sunday’s 74th Writers Guild of America Awards will wrap up the guild season, along with the American Society of Cinematographers Awards. Will the winners be an Oscar preview?
“Licorice Pizza,” written by Paul Thomas Anderson, and “Coda,” by Sian Heder, are favored to win Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay, respectively. However, they are not facing off against many of their Oscar rivals as the WGA’s rules have rendered several scripts ineligible, including Oscar nominees “Belfast” and “The Worst Person in the World” in original, and “Drive My Car,” “The Lost Daughter” and “The Power of the Dog” in adapted. But if they both prevail, they will have bagged the two top industry prizes as they won at BAFTA last weekend right in the middle of final Oscar voting (it ends Tuesday).

The Pulitzer Prizes join a slew of other awards bodies that have now postponed their kudos thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Thankfully, this highly esteemed group isn’t going to wait too long before announcing their winners virtually.
According to an April 7 tweet (see it below), the Pulitzer Prizes for Journalism, Books, Drama, and Music will be delayed by two weeks. The winners will be announced via a livestream on pulitzer.org on Monday May 4th at 3:00pm. The theater industry has been hit particularly hard during the pandemic, as the live art form requires the gathering of people in one place. This has even led to the postponement of the Tony Awards. So it’s a welcome bit of awards news that the highly esteemed Pulitzer Prize for Drama will be doled out sooner rather than later.

Bww Review: A Godly Intervention To Stop Climate Change In Madeleine George's Comedy Hurricane Diane
Pulitzer finalist Madeleine George describes the title character of her decidedly weird little comedy about the threat of global warming, Hurricane Diane, as 'a butch charm factory.' Becca Blackwell sure fits that bill perfectly, delivering the 90-minute play's exposition monologue with the engaging flair of an ace stand-up comic nailing the punch lines in a tight three minute set.

Anna Deavere Smith, whose solo play Notes From the Field aired on HBO in February, will debut a new production during summer 2019 at the New York Theatre Workshop, the Nytw announced today.
Details about the as-yet-untitled play were not disclosed, though The New York Times has reported Smith’s upcoming project to be on “the subject of race and the state of civic discourse in America.” The project was described by Off Broadway’s Nytw as “a vital solo show.”
Actress/playwright Smith is the MacArthur and Polk awards winner, and Pulitzer Prize nominee whose solo works include Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 and Fires In The Mirror: Crown Heights. Notes From the Field, pictured above, was drawn from more than 250 interviews on the subject of America’s “school-to-prison pipeline,” and featured Smith’s portrayals of 18 real-life characters.
She currently recurs on Black-ish as Alicia, mother of Tracee Ellis Ross’ Rainbow Johnson.
