In the "Star Trek: Prodigy" episode "Mindwalk", the crew of the U.S.S. Protostar has learned that their ship is infected with an insidious computer virus planted by the evil Diviner (John Noble). It seems that the virus can be spread through mere communications channels, meaning Dal (Brett Gray), Gwyn (Ella Purnell), and the rest of the Protostar teens can't explain who they are to the grumpy Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) pursuing them in a massive vessel called the U.S.S. Dauntless. If the virus infects a ship, its systems will be rewired to automatically attack other Federation vessels. The Diviner aims to destroy the Federation before a cataclysmic future event occurs; the Diviner, naturally, is a time traveler.
With the Dauntless on their tail, Dal realizes that he can communicate with Janeway. Dal, it seems, has some mild and latent telepathic abilities, and reaches out to communicate directly to Janeway's brain.

J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" reboot shook up the classic characters it depicts, and one of the biggest changes was turning Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana) into lovers. In the first movie, this is a bit of a bait and switch; there's some early sexual tension between Uhura and Kirk (Chris Pine), and she's even the first of the future Enterprise crew he meets when they flirt at a bar. Nyota, though, only has eyes for the Vulcan (like plenty of Trekkie fangirls) and the relationship endures in the two sequels, "Into Darkness" and "Beyond."
Now, this isn't a totally unprecedented pairing. There are a few suggestive moments between Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) in early episodes of "Star Trek: The Original Series." In "The Man Trap," Uhura tries to strike up a conversation with Spock, and in "Charlie X," she sings while Spock plays his lute.

Classic "Star Trek" episode "The Amok Time" delved the most into Vulcan culture of any of the series' 79 installments. In the episode, Spock (Leonard Nimoy) had to return home to wed T'Pring (Arlene Martel), his betrothed since they were both age seven.
T'Pring isn't an especially sympathetic character in "The Amok Time." The implication is that since Spock had been away from Vulcan for so long, she never really knew him. She doesn't want to be "the consort of a legend" and her heart belongs to another — Stonn (Lawrence Montaigne). So, she connives to undo her wedding to Spock. First, she rejects him, forcing him into a challenge for her hand. Then, she selects Captain Kirk (William Shatner) as her champion in a duel to the death. She knows that no matter the outcome, both men will reject her, Kirk out of disinterest and Spock out of grief, so the...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 5 “Charades.”] The events of the latest Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are a long time coming for Spock (Ethan Peck), Chapel (Jess Bush), and T’Pring (Gia Sandhu). Just as Spock is about to entertain T’Pring and her parents for their engagement dinner (complete with Vulcan rituals), things go sideways during a mission and he ends up entirely human; an alien from an alternate dimension saved him by fixing the damage (with mixed instructions) to match Chapel. The rest of the crew tries to help Spock pretend to still be half-Vulcan (and he conceals what’s going on from T’Pring). However, by the end of the episode, he and T’Pring are taking time apart, and he’s confessing to Chapel that he has feelings for someone else — and she kisses him! Without that admission from Spock first, Chapel likely...

The following review contains Star Trek: Strange New Worlds spoilers.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 5
After several heavy episodes dealing with topics ranging from death and memory loss to an alternate timeline set in a bleak, Starfleet-less future, it was definitely time for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 to lighten up a bit. Thankfully the season’s mid-point episode, “Charades,” is an entertaining romp, full of laugh-out-loud funny moments that let almost every member of the series’ main cast flex their comedic chops. Yet, it’s also a surprisingly thoughtful and emotional hour in which Spock, accidentally turns human, confronts a variety of internal and social struggles, and seems to take some important and necessary steps toward deciding what kind of person, partner, and Starfleet officer he ultimately wants to become.
Ethan Peck has always been one of Strange New Worlds’ most potent secret weapons, taking on...

We’ve been bingeing Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in my house lately. In addition to the underrated spinoff’s individual merits, it’s striking to be reminded of the differences between the era where every successful show made 20-plus episodes a year, and this current one, where 10 episodes per season is the most given to almost everybody, including modern-day Trek shows like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
There were definitely downsides to the old system. Unevenness was inevitable when producing that much content each season. As we near the...

Quick! Describe Mr. Spock in two words! Chances are, neither of those words is “romantic” or “exuberant.” While the science officer is half-human on his mother Amanda’s side, he fully embraces his father Sarek’s Vulcan heritage, purging himself of all emotions. So when actors portray Spock as giving into his feelings — at least, when those actors aren’t Leonard Nimoy — it’s always a bit surprising, and Star Trek fans tend to get a bit upset.
Judging by the latest trailer for the second season of Strange New Worlds, producers are willing to rattle fans’ cages a bit if it’ll lead to an interesting story. Among teases that include the return of Klingons from The Motion Picture and The Next Generation era, as well as a first look at live-action Ensigns Mariner and Boimler from Lower Decks, we see Spock (Ethan Peck) smooch Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush...

Do not adjust your monitors, and listen closely to Tony Hale‘s mellifluous voice as he guides you through a meditation that will leave you feeling light as a feather and do wonders for your self-esteem. I’m talking about an exclusive clip for episode 6 of The Mysterious Benedict Society Season 2, featuring Hale’s Dr. Curtain and Marta Kessler’s Constance Contraire.
In The Mysterious Benedict Society exclusive clip, Constance tunes in to a PSA hosted by Dr. Curtain, urging viewers to relax and give themselves over to the power of positive thinking. While Dr. L.D. Curtain (Hale) promises viewers a pathway to unbridled happiness; fans of the show know better than to take the untrustworthy villain at his word. As Constance’s eyes begin drooping, we can see her falling into a trance, which could spell trouble for the whip-smart troublemaker and her misfit friends.

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is, unlike the bulk of modern scripted television, presented in an episodic format. Like classic "Star Trek," each episode concludes at the end of the hour, presenting -- if done well -- a miniature morality play of the week. "Strange New Worlds" dares to dabble in that most taboo of modern storytelling tropes: the status quo. Trek has, if this author may opine briefly, gained the most amount of dramatic traction by depicting resolute, intelligent characters going about their daily routine. Seeing a team of Starfleet officers in constant crisis mode, moving throughout a larger story, robs them of their chance to impress audiences with their everyday skillsets.
The episodic nature of the show also permits guest stars to make more of an impact. When an antagonist arrives in a larger story arc, they must either be contemplated beyond the point of being interesting (in a "what's the villain's backstory?...

While the above headline refers specifically to "Spock Amok", the fifth episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," the phrase "one of the show's best episodes" could conceivably apply to any of the episodes to date. "Strange New Worlds" is a startlingly good show which started rather strong, a rarity for a franchise whose shows notoriously get off to rocky starts.
In "Spock Amok" -- a play on the original series episode "Amok Time" -- the crew of the Enterprise finds themselves on shore leave, left to pursue their romantic interests. Commander Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) and Lt. Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), the "serious" characters, learn to have a little bit of fun by playing "Enterprise Bingo" (don't ask). Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) spends time in a bar, contemplating her feelings for Spock (Ethan Peck). And Spock aims to have a romantic evening with his lover T'Pring (Gia Sandhu), leading to a...

With the possible exception of Janice Rand, Nurse Christine Chapel is the most underused character from the original Star Trek. Played by Majel Barrett, who originated the role of Captain Pike’s Xo Number One, and later played Deanna Troi’s mother Lwaxana and the voiced Starfleet computers in the 90s series, Nurse Chapel was a reoccurring character in the original series. Despite her constant presence, Chapel never got much attention from writers.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 Episode 5 “Spock Amok.”] What better way to get to know the one you’re going to marry than to swap bodies? That’s what happens to Spock (Ethan Peck) and T’Pring (Gia Sandhu) in the latest Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode, giving new meaning to “Walk a mile in someone else’s shoes.” “It was wild. To be faced with that sort of challenge this early on in this series was really terrifying for me as an actor because I’m still trying to get my footing in the role of Spock, which I think is something that I will be doing sort of eternally, because I’m presented with incredible challenges, every episode as an actor, things that we haven’t seen Spock do before,” Peck tells TV Insider. “There were so many layers: It was me playing Spock playing T’Pring playing Spock,...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Episode 5
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ first season has ticked a lot of boxes thus far, from stories of alien encounters that run the gamut from hopeful first contacts to high-octane face-offs and deft character work that adds intriguing new layers to the series’ central players, even those we thought we already knew. Now, with “Spock Amok,” Strange New Worlds tries its hand at comedy, and while the hour isn’t a terribly substantial one in terms of larger forward narrative progress, it’s an utterly delightful time.
The set-up is broad enough to give most of the main cast something to do and, perhaps more importantly, it’s honestly just fun to watch. And while I love this franchise, let’s be honest, outside of, say, Star Trek: Lower Decks, there hasn’t been much...

This post contains minor spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode 5.
"Who doesn't love hijinks?" Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) asks in the new episode of "Star Trek: Strange New World," just before a body-swapped Spock (Ethan Peck) attempts to take over for T'Pring (Gia Sandhu) in an important meeting. Clearly, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" loves hijinks, as the show's latest episode features not only a cheeky Vulcan body swap, but also a rousing game of Enterprise Bingo, plus a possible hint at a future "Trek" romance. Captain Pike (Anson Mount) mostly stays out of the kooky action this time around, but...

Oh, joy! A “Star Trek” origin story that captures the humanism, humor and impulse to connect of the original while smoothly “assimilating” into the larger “Star Trek” universe.
“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” finds a perfect balance of breadcrumbs for diehard fans who cannot be fooled, and a cohesive narrative and diverse cast to attract new viewers. The ten-episode prequel unites the terrific team behind “Star Trek: Picard” and “Star Trek: Discovery” – Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet – co-creating the story with Oscar-winner Akiva Goldsmith (“A Beautiful Mind”), who wrote and directed Episode 1.
Rooted in the series’ original pre-Captain Kirk pilot, it stars the charismatic Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, Kirk’s immediate and less libidinous predecessor from both the original series pilot, “The Cage,” and Hugo Award winning two-part episode, “The Menagerie,” steering the U.S.S. Enterprise. “Strange New Worlds” opens with Pike back home in Montana, struggling after...

Exclusive: Original Star Trek character T’Pring is making a return in Strange New Worlds. We’ve confirmed Gia Sandhu (The Mysterious Benedict Society) will be reprising the role in the upcoming new series, premiering tomorrow, May 5, on the streaming service. She can be seen briefly in the trailer, which you can watch below.
Sandhu’s T’Pring is Spock’s very alluring and intelligent fiancée; the two have been bonded since childhood. Though T’Pring often wishes Spock would return to Vulcan and settle down, she understands his sense of duty, having her own career that she is passionate about: helping to rehabilitate criminals and bring them back towards the teachings of Vulcan logic. T’Pring tries to be lovingly patient with Spock while he comes to terms with the human side of his nature, hoping that her support will ultimately bring them closer.

The final frontier is getting fun. A new full-length trailer for the upcoming series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has dropped, and the name of the game is classic, lighthearted space adventure with phasers a-blasting. For Trekkies who have craved a retro approach — but with great production values and VFX — Strange New Worlds seems to be the most fan-service oriented Star Trek project in a very long time. It’s not quite Galaxy Quest as actual Star Trek, but it feels close, in a good way.
But, the unique thing about the trailers for Strange New Worlds is the interesting way that deep-cut Easter eggs are appearing. Basically, there’s just a bunch of stuff we didn’t see coming. Oh, and did we say trailers rather than trailer? Yes, although the new minute-and-a-half full trailer for the series has been getting a lot of attention, Paramount+ has also been...

Disney appears to love two things at the moment: Marvel and Tony Hale. And while both are fun in their own right, the work the studio has been doing with Hale has created some adorable and downright weird programming aimed at children, starting with the creation of Forky in “Toy Story 4” and the Emmy Award-winning spin-off short series, “Forky Asks a Question.”
“The Mysterious Benedict Society,” based on Trenton Lee Stewart’s book, is another entry in Disney’s collaboration with Hale that is equal parts charming, wacky, weird, and whimsical. Series creators Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi skillfully create a world engaging enough for children but with enough added mystery and complexity to ensnare adults (or Disney’s patented brand of childless millennials.)
