For the most part, Darby Harper’s life resembles that of other teenage protagonists of comedy-dramas past and present: She lives with a parent whose sole function is to impart critical lessons in brief one-liners; she is an outcast at her high school, a place of perplexing social mores and calcified cliques; and she wields her acerbic humor to study and judge the world around her. Unlike the typical main characters, however, Darby (Riele Downs) can talk to the dead.
In Silas Howard’s endearing but uneven film Darby and the Dead, the heroine parlays her sixth sense into a side gig. After school, from her bedroom turned office, Darby helps irresolute ghosts make peace with their death and cross definitively to the other side. Her clients skew older, and their requests — to amend relationships with children, to remind spouses of their love...

Plot: After suffering a near-death experience as a young girl, Darby Harper gains the ability to see dead people. As a result, she becomes introverted and shut off from her high school peers and prefers to spend time counseling lonely spirits who have unfinished business on earth. But all that changes when Capri, the Queen Bee of the school’s most exclusive clique, unexpectedly dies in a freak hair straightening accident, resulting in the obvious cancellation of her upcoming “Sweet 17.” Capri, however, pleads with Darby from the other side to intervene and convince Capri’s friends to proceed with the party as planned. In order to appease the wrath of the undead diva, Darby must emerge from her self-imposed exile and reinvent herself — which along the way allows her to find new joy back in the land of the living.

In “Darby and the Dead,” the promise of its premise outweighs the delivered product. Director Silas Howard demonstrates his deft capabilities bringing an energetic irreverence and aesthetic buoyancy to the unfurling feature, which is centered on a tormented teen cajoled into helping a recently deceased mean girl get a new life in the afterlife. Unfortunately, despite the film’s undeniable charms and strong lead performances, the fabric it weaves frays as it wears on, undone by clunky character development, trite sentimentality and rushed resolutions.
High schooler Darby Harper (Riele Downs) sees dead people. But unlike Haley Joel Osment’s “Sixth Sense” character, she knows exactly how to help the deceased with their unfinished business. She’s turned it into a full-fledged job, paid only in gratitude, playing spiritual counselor to those she affectionately calls “Deados” who’ve passed away and are stuck in limbo. This special gift was bestowed on...

For a movie about a teen who communicates with ghosts, “Darby and the Dead” is awfully dispiriting. Writer Becca Greene (“Good Vibes”) and director Silas Howard (“Dickinson”) casually kill off Darby Harper’s mother in the first minute, spend most of the movie requiring Darby (Riele Downs) to change her entire personality, and then proceed to punish her for following the path they’ve set.
Though the film seems designed to exploit a new generation’s affection for movies like “Clueless,” “Mean Girls,” “Bring it On” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” the filmmakers have missed the messages of those beloved classics altogether. Plus, there’s so much YA streaming content these days that lazily patched-together projects feel, well, extra lazy.
Even Downs, so appealing on Nickelodeon’s “Henry Danger,” can’t fight the forces of this soulless script (which was based on a potentially promising story idea by Wenonah Wilms). As Darby,...

After my dad died, echoes of his raspy breathing haunted me for days. I knew he was gone, but my mind couldn't accept his absence. In dreams, he'd visit me, and I'd awake convinced he was alive. I kept asking an impossible question: would it be sadder to learn that ghosts exist or to learn they didn't? Do we want departed loved ones to surround us forever? Or is eternal rest kinder? Director Silas Howard's "Darby and the Dead" tenderly tackles this topic through a teen horror comedy lens without veering into the saccharine or pandering territory. Few filmmakers have crafted a film about grieving with as much delight, empathy, and candor.
When someone you love dies, people always ask if you want to talk about it, a well-meaning request, but nevertheless frustrating. Grief is a wily combination of confusion, rage, sorrow, guilt, relief, and longing — one hell of...

Exclusive: James Moses Black is the latest addition to the cast of Renfield, the Universal monster movie from director Chris McKay.
He joins an ensemble that includes Nicholas Hoult, Nicolas Cage, Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Bess Rouss, as previously announced.
The film based on an original story outline by Robert Kirkman centers on Renfield (Hoult), who has grown sick and tired of his centuries as Dracula’s (Cage) lackey. Sometimes I think that Reese Witherspoon forgets she's an Academy Award winning actress. The Walk the Line star keeps taking roles in romantic comedies that just aren't up to par. This Means War is the most recent example, and the actress is apparently on board the adaptation of Men Are from Mars, Woman Are from Venus, which sounds like it be about as generic as What to Expect When You're Expecting. Thankfully, she also has a promising turn in The Devil's Knot, the film about The West Memphis 3, in the works, but now a new romantic comedy has caught her eye again in The Beard, which doesn't yet have a director. THR says project comes from a spec script by Becca Greene, a writer from the MTV animated series "Good Vibes," and while the story details haven't been revealed, we have a good idea of a certain element in the...

Reese Witherspoon will star in and produce the rom-com "The Beard" at Chernin Entertainment says The Hollywood Reporter.
Story details were not revealed but the title refers to the expression used to describe a member of the opposite sex, usually women, who act as a date for a gay person trying to give off the illusion to the rest of the world that they're straight.
It's a term that has been used in Hollywood for decades as various actors stay in the closet to further their careers, so 'beards' are arranged for them - usually rising actresses who themselves are happy to help push the illusion of an actor's heterosexuality in exchange for cash and/or publicity for themselves and their own careers.
Becca Greene penned the script while Peter Chernin will also produce. Witherspoon is currently shooting Atom Egoyan’s "Devil’s Knot".

If it's a Wednesday, it must be a rom-com for Reese Witherspoon. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress has put her scrawl next to The Beard, a romantic-comedy in which she'll play the pretend girlfriend of a gay man (or men), in a project she's also producing. There are few plot details to hand but the script, which comes courtesy of newcomer Becca Greene, sounds like it will pitch Witherspoon into a variety of awkward clinches while she attempts to sort out her own dismaying love life. A reverse My Best Friend's Wedding, then? After a relatively quiet year or two for the actress - for all kinds of good family-related reasons - the Witherspoon slate is filling up again. With Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, Atom Egoyan's The Devil's Knot alongside Colin Firth, and indie drama Mud all heading to our screens, there'll be plenty to keep Witherspooners happy.

• Reese Witherspoon is on board to produce and star in The Beard, a romantic comedy about a woman who serves as a fake date for a gay man to help him pass as straight. Incredibly, the project marks Witherspoon’s first (pardon the pun) straight-up romantic comedy since 2005′s Just Like Heaven (last spring’s action comedy This Means War doesn’t count). Becca Greene (a writer on MTV’s 2011 animated series Good Vibes) penned the script. [THR]

Reese Witherspoon continues to aim for variety with regards to the films she takes. At present, she's starring in Atom Egoyan's West Memphis Three film Devil's Knot, which I expect to have a darker tone, given the true story on which it's based. And now it looks like she's attached to another romantic comedy, playing a starring role in The Beard. My hopes, expectations, and the like for a Reese Witherspoon romcom could generally be said to –
No, no, it’s best to stop right there. That sentence almost indicates any of those exist in the first place, and I shouldn’t be throwing faulty impressions out into the wild like that. Before any more of your precious time is wasted, it might be in your interest to know that she’ll be starring in The Beard, a Becca Greene-scripted comedy that the actress will back alongside Chernin Entertainment. [THR]
You could probably parse this out from the title, and that’s all there really is in the first place; Witherspoon will play “a beard,” the sort of woman hired by a gay man to hide their own sexual identity. This was the plot point on an episode of Seinfeld, and even they couldn’t make it work all that well.

Yes, Reese Witherspoon is an Academy Award winner, but when it comes to picking comedies, good lord, she needs to fire her agent or get a second opinion. Her last four? "This Means War," "How Do You Know," "Four Christmases" and "Penelope." And now she's signing up to do a movie whose premise was fodder for a "Seinfeld" episode thirteen years ago. THR reports that the actress will produce and star in "The Beard." Penned by Becca Greene (the shortlived "Good Vibes"), her script was picked up by Chernin Entertainment, and while there are no plot details, the trade does note that any desire you have for Witherspoon to go Zz Top is out the window, as the title will refer to a girl who dates a guy to help keep his sexual orientation secret. How romantically comical! Of course, on "Seinfeld," Elaine learned the hard way that trying to...

Reese Witherspoon is heading back into romantic comedy territory with The Beard. Chernin Entertainment has dipped into its discretionary fund to pick up the project, a spec script by Becca Greene.
Witherspoon will star in the project and produce with Peter Chernin. While it might be tempting to see a story about Witherspoon growing facial hair, the “beard” in the title refers to a member of the opposite sex -- usually a woman -- who acts as a date for a gay person, giving the illusion the person isn’t gay.
