Variety has named its inaugural 10 Artisans to Watch.
The honorees will be feted at the Scad Savannah Film Festival on Oct. 27. With the event, Variety is looking to spotlight the behind-the-scenes artists that are invaluable to this year’s best films and shows and are rising stars in their fields.

Fantasy films and television have been the basis for some of the most memorable scores in history, and more are on display with the debuts of “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” this week and “House of the Dragon” on Sunday.

After two years without an in-person Comic-Con, fans are definitely holding out for the appearance of a few heroes. Fortunately, the ongoing pandemic — and skepticism over whether the Con will truly enforce those mask protocols — won’t keep the newest caped crusaders from braving the annual nerdfest that kicks off Thursday in San Diego.
Marvel shouldn’t disappoint with sneak peeks of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and the upcoming She-Hulk: Attorney at Law for Disney+. But it’s not expected to shower Hall H with an embarrassment of riches like it did in 2019; some sources believe Marvel is saving it all up for Disney’s fan convention D23 during the second weekend of September, specifically in regards to new projects. The Society of Composers & Lyricists announced the winners of its 3rd Annual Scl Awards this evening at The Skirball Cultural Center. The event, which was hosted by rapper Aloe Blacc, recognizes composers and songwriters in all visual media.
Oscar-nominated siblings Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell accepted their award virtually for Outstanding Original Song for a Drama/Documentary for the theme from No Time To Die.
Outstanding Original Song for a Musical/Comedy went to “Just Look up”, co-written by Nicholas Britell, Taura Stinson, Ariana Grande and Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi, from Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up.

When “Spirit Untamed” composer Amie Doherty was a kid, her mother used to write contemporary musicals for her local school, with lyrics that spoofs area politics or the news of the world. It’s where Doherty says she first got a taste for writing music that has carried her to a career as a composer and songwriter.
“She would come into my school, mortifyingly, and throw me in behind the piano and I’d have to play all the songs,” Doherty recalls in our “Meet the Experts” composers panel. “But more often than not everything went chaotically wrong on stage and the curtain would pull back and they’d be like play something, so I’d be live scoring this chaos on stage. I hated it back then but funnily, it taught me to think on my feet. So sometimes I think it all started there.”

For the Dreamworks Animation film “Spirit Untamed,” composer Amie Doherty had to straddle a difficult line: writing a musical score that worked for both the feature’s target audience of young kids and also their savvier and more emotionally mature parents.
“That’s something we talked about a lot. In particular, in some of the scarier scenes,” Doherty tells Gold Derby during our “Meet the Experts” composers panel. “Sometimes I would pull back and ask those questions. For Elaine Bogan’s animated feature film directorial debut, DreamWorks Animation’s Spirit Untamed, it seemed like there was a constant bit of kismet at play.
“When I was first called and contacted to become part of the Spirit franchise, I jumped out of my car,” Bogan told Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles on Sunday while sharing a panel with composer Amie Doherty. “I was sitting in the parking lot at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center just after having ridden my horse, so the timing of everything felt great.”
Bogan said she’d long held a deep affinity for the Spirit property, going back to the initial film in the franchise, 2002’s Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.
“I’ve been an equestrian since I was a kid, and I grew up watching the first film until I broke the DVD in half,” she revealed.

The new animated feature “Spirit Untamed,” in theaters June 4, celebrates the power and importance of friendships, but at its heart is a theme of fearlessness.
Director Elaine Bogan makes her feature in the follow-up to the popular 2002 movie “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.” This time the focus is on a new character, 12-year old Lucky (voiced by Isabela Merced), a headstrong girl with a sense of adventure, who learns about her true self when she moves from the Eastern U.S. to the Wild West during the frontier era. Along the way, she forms an unlikely connection with Spirit, a wild mustang.

When I wrote the holiday movie guide “Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas” a decade ago — and bemoaned the lack of LGBT stories being told in the seasonal sub-genre — I never could have predicted the bumper crop of 2020, which is offering queer-centric (or at least gay-inclusive) new movies from Lifetime, Hallmark, Paramount Network, and Netflix, as well as the arrival of “Happiest Season,” an all-star Christmas comedy with a major studio behind it.

The latest wave of Universal’s Composers Initiative to promote the advancement of women and people of color as film composers has opened its application period Wednesday, and the studio has released a highlight reel of some of the alums of the program who have already gotten jobs through the initiative.
The Universal Composers Initiative was created in 2018 in response to data that showed less than 3% of all film composers were women and people of color film composers were virtually non-existent in Hollywood.
In a new video teasing the success of the program, it was revealed that composer Amie Doherty, who scored Focus’ “The High Note” and a “Jurassic World” short called “Battle at Big Rock,” was hired to score an upcoming DreamWorks Animation film “Spirit Riding Free,” set to release on May 14, 2021.

A personal assistant gets a front row seat to both the most glamorous and mundane moments in their employer’s life.
