Founded by Maxwell Gaines in 1944, the Entertaining Comics brand (a.k.a. EC Comics) initially specialized in educational comics and stories aimed at children. But after Gaines died in a boating accident in ’47, his 25-year-old son William took control of the company and changed its direction, exploring the genres of horror, sci-fi, and satire while bringing us classic titles like Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, The Haunt of Fear, Weird Science, Weird Fantasy, and Mad. Sadly, EC Comics was at its peak when parents started to worry about the negative effects reading comic books could have on their children, leading to things like a Congressional hearing that blamed comic books for juvenile delinquency – a claim that was backed up by the book Seduction of the Innocent, written by psychiatrist Fredric Wertham. So by 1956, EC Comics ceased publishing all of their titles except for Mad. Those classic EC...

The impact of EC Comics cannot be understated, having inspired countless horror creators, including George A. Romero, Stephen King, and many, many more. After nearly 70 years since the last comic book from EC, as first reported by the NY Times, Oni Press has partnered with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc. to introduce new EC Comics! Starting this summer, Epitaphs From The Abyss #1 and Cruel Universe #1 will kick off brand-new stories from some of today's best comic book writers, and we have all the details:
"Oni Press – the multiple Eisner and Harvey Award-winning publisher of groundbreaking comics and graphic fiction for more than 25 years – is proud to announce a brand-new publishing partnership with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc. that will see the full-fledged return of EC Comics to comic shop and bookstore shelves worldwide with a slate of all-new series beginning in the summer of 2024.

In the early 1950s, EC Comics was the bad boy of comic publishers. Its comics such as Tales From the Crypt, Weird Science and Two-Fisted Tales sold millions in mid-century America. Unfortunately, its stories — at times shocking, horrifying, and even progressive — also drew scrutiny and backlash, and the company found itself in the cross hairs of censorship and regulation at the height of the McCarthy era. The company ultimately shuttered, with the last comic hitting newsstands and drug stores in 1956.
Now, seventy years after the creation of the self-regulatory body Comics Code Authority, the infamous comics company is blasting out of the crypt and returning with a brand new line of comics.
Oni Press, the publisher perhaps best known for the breakout indie hit Scott Pilgrim, has partnered with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc., the rights holders of the EC line, to launch all-new stories with A-list comics creators beginning this summer.

This year’s San Diego Comic-Con will look very different from what people have come to expect over the last 15 years or so.
Thanks to the first double strike to hit the American entertainment industry since 1960, almost no members of the Writers Guild of America or SAG-AFTRA who work in TV or film will be attending in any official capacity. And without stars and scribes to draw in fans, TV and movie studios have mostly pulled out too.
That means, at this storied gathering of geeks, the comic book creators who are the ostensible reason the event exists will have the floor almost entirely to themselves.

In 2020, after Mattson Tomlin was reported as being a screenwriter working on what would become the Warner Bros. hit, The Batman, he was approached via social media and other channels by what he calls a “flurry” of folks from the comic industry.
One of those folks was Lee Bermejo, the artist known for his grim and gritty work on DC books such as Batman: Damned and Before Watchmen: Rorschach.
“I was posting frames from movies I was watching on Instagram and he saw them,” Tomlin recalls. Bermejo started a conversation that eventually moved to a meeting, the first of many, on Skype. “’We should do a book together,’ we said to each other.”
Now, almost three years later, that book is ready to be unveiled.

I’m a pretty easy mark when it comes to Superman books. A quick check of my collection shows over 2000 books with Superman in them. Throw in Superboy and Supergirl and, well, I guess I’ve got a super-addiction. But I digress. As much as I love Superman, he’s been a well travelled property in his 83 years of being published, and coming up with new approaches, or new spins on old wheels, is getting harder and harder. Superman: Red and Blue seems to exist for just that reason, to give Superman some fresh takes, some new looks, but to retain that central core that defines him. all in just the colours red and blue, of course. I like the idea, so I hope the execution lives up to it. Let’s take a look.

I think it’s a pretty good indicator of how much The Joker has entered into popular culture that he now merits his own Anniversary Special. He’s been pretty popular since the days of the Batman TV show back in the 1960’s of course, though Cesar Romero’s Joker bears little resemblance to today’s. The Joker has gone from being a clownish villain, a villain who uses humour as his calling card, to more often than not a representation of pure anarchy in human form, fighting back against the law and order of society, personified in Batman. I’ve read articles before where we are told to see The Joker as the hero, embracing freedom of thought and action, and Batman has an instrument of control and repression. I doubt Bob Kane and Bill Finger had all that...

"Everyone's got a reason to go after 'Nautolan'. 'Bossk, 'Boba Fett' and a slew of new characters are hot on Lash's trail. Can Valance get to her first? And what could have possibly made Lash break her word and betray her fellow hunters?..."

The Batman‘s Batsuit is finally here and while many fans are over the moon, others are considerably less enthused. It seems as though those reports that said the look would be inspired by Lee Bermejo were correct, as the elements are reminiscent of his work, like the stitched leather cowl. Fans are also theorizing that the Arkham Asylum inspired bat-logo may be constructed from the gun that killed his parents.
But the short video, described as a camera test by director Matt Reeves, doesn’t give much else away. It’s shot in very low crimson light, bathing the suit and its background in red. This has the inadvertent effect of making it resemble a suit worn by another vigilante: Daredevil. Yes, fans are now comparing it to both Charlie Cox’s Daredevil from the tragically cancelled Netflix show and the Ben Affleck Daredevil from the 2003 movie. And here...

Production of Matt Reeves’ The Batman is fully underway now. Scenes are being shot on set at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden and on location in London, giving us a couple of exciting sneak peeks at the film. And while we’ve seen some interesting set decoration and what appears to be Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, we haven’t laid eyes on the Batsuit or the Batmobile yet.
That may change very soon, though, as at the end of February, the production will up sticks to Glasgow, Scotland. Scottish paper the Daily Record is reporting that the streets will be made up to look like Gotham City, with their insider source reporting the following:
“Glasgow will be turned into Gotham City and, with the city’s architecture, it’s expected to look great in the new film. It will also be the first time for DC fans to see the...

With filming on The Batman having commenced and pictures of the set already floating about online, I think we’re not too far away from an official reveal of Robert Pattinson in the Batsuit. After all, once he’s shooting in it, it’s only a matter of time before grainy long-lens shots hit the internet and I’m betting that Warner Bros. would rather us see a professionally shot promo pic instead. However, there are those who’ve already seen the suit and thanks to them, we’re starting to build an idea of what it could look like.
Former Variety reporter Kris Tapley posted a now-deleted Tweet saying that he’d heard secondhand that the suit’s design is based on artist Lee Bermejo’s work. Bermejo has been working with DC for some time now, with his most prominent stuff being Lex Luthor: Man of Steel and Joker with Brian Azzarello,...

Here's our rundown of this year's coolest Batman collectibles.
80 years in and Batman is as popular as ever. Even as you read these words, work is underway on the next cinematic adventure for the Dark Knight, and Joker is still going strong in theaters -- so much so that Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips are hiding away crafting the character's next solo film. The eight decades since Batman was first introduced in the pages of Detective Comics have seen him undergo countless changes, the versatility of the Caped Crusader is a huge part of his staying power. But when it comes down to the nitty gritty, Batman is just a hero at heart -- whether he's the goofy 1960s one or the grimdark Synder take. So you really can't go wrong with giving the gift of Batman, and here's some ideas to make your holiday shopping experience a Bat-tastic one!

Now that Joker has joined the $1 billion club – the first R-rated movie to do so – everybody is eager to find out what Warner Bros. and director Todd Phillips are planning next. We told you last month that Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix would join forces once more for a direct sequel to Joker, with THR confirming our scoop earlier today, and on top of that, the outlet has also reported that Phillips is eager to begin development on films that examine other DC characters’ origins in new ways. Which, once again, is something that We Got This Covered first told you a month ago, with our sources saying that Mr. Freeze and Two-Face were getting their own films as well.
Apparently, while meeting with WB execs to hash out future plans, Phillips reportedly requested the rights to a “portfolio” of DC characters’ origin stories. He didn’t get that, but...

DC Black Label, which still sounds to me like a perfectly fine Scotch, is an imprint of DC designed to showcase more mature takes on DC characters. To my mind Vertigo already did that back in the early 1990′s, as did The Dark Knight Returns in the Eighties, so not so much an innovation as returning yet again to that well. Don’t get me started on how successive comic creators have misunderstood Frank Miller’s take on Batman, the ultra violent, weary, almost psychopathic obsessive, by using that take in the present day. The point was he was an Old Batman, worn down physically and mentally. Like I said, don’t get me started. It is relevant to this review though, as Azzarello’s Batman in this book has a certain similarity to Miller’s.

Brian Azzarello tells us about the genesis of Batman: Damned, the dawn of DC's Black Label, and how that John Constantine team-up happened.
When DC’s Black Label imprint was first announced, fans were promised that they would journey to the darkest edges of the DC Universe with some of the most brilliant creators as their guides. Batman: Damned, by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo, kept that promise, delivering one of the most terrifying, challenging, and controversial DC projects in decades. With heart-stopping, fully-painted art by Bermejo, Batman: Damned is a horror mystery tale that sees Bruce Wayne trying to solve the murder of none other than the Joker. Batman enlists the aid of John Constantine (a character that Azzarello is very familiar with) to guide the Dark Knight through the mystical side of the DC Universe, where the Dark Knight must battle magic and demonic forces...

Meanwhile in the Comics Corner... Batman gets help understanding his darkness from a very unlikely source in Etrigan, a demon in DC Comics' Batman: Damned #2. We also have a look at the cover art for Spawn Kills Everyone 2 #1, Vampironica #5, and Dollman Kills the Full Moon Universe #5.
Batman: Damned #2: "As Batman’s descent into the madness of Gotham City’s decadent underbelly continues, he must try to exorcize some of his demons…and who better to help than the Demon, Etrigan himself. And where there are demons, there’s also a Deadman, a Spectre, an Enchantress and a host of other supernatural friends and foes—it’s a veritable Grand Guignol!

In an "elseworld" version of Gotham City, the Joker is dead and maybe Batman had something to do with it... if only he could remember. Batman and John Constantine team up for Batman: Damned #1. Also in today's Comics Corner: Terminator: Sector War #2, Black Hammer: The Age of Doom #5, Curse Words #16, and Seven to Eternity #11.
Batman: Damned #1: "DC Black Label, the highly anticipated new imprint from DC Comics, starts here!
The Joker is dead.
There is no doubt about that. But whether Batman finally snapped his scrawny neck or some other sinister force in Gotham City did the deed is still a mystery.
Problem is, Batman can’t remember…and the more he digs into this labyrinthian case, the more his mind starts to doubt everything he’s uncovering.
So who better to set him straight than…John Constantine? Problem with that is as much as John loves a good mystery,...

For the past few years, DC has partnered with comic shops, major bookstores and other various retailers in order to bring us Batman Day. Serving as a celebration of all things Dark Knight, each have offered free reprints (and sometimes new stories altogether) of some of the Caped Crusader’s key adventures, not to mention other promo goodies. Basically, it feels like Free Comic Book Day all over again, only with the focus placed squarely on the timeless icon.
While the festivities continuing into this year seemed like a foregone conclusion, we all wondered which books participating stores would be offering. Among the many “announced” DC films supposedly being on their way in the next few years – and there sure are a lot of them – none can be too sure of which will actually see the light of day. But whereas I’m less inclined to place my chips on, say, The New Gods or Cyborg, the upcoming Joker origin movie can lay claim to something that not many others on the alleged slate can: an actual green light given by the studio.
Interestingly enough, this picture will set itself apart from the rest of the DC Extended Universe because, for one, Joaquin Phoenix has been enlisted to play the Clown Prince of Crime, as opposed to Jared Leto. Furthermore, it’ll be afforded a smaller budget than most DC flicks (think around $55 million), and is said to be “an exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study,...

Though we as DC fans know that we can bet on seeing the likes of Aquaman, Shazam and Wonder Woman 2 in theaters over the course of the next two years, there’s really no concrete evidence supporting what lies beyond that. I mean, Birds of Prey will more than likely be the next on the docket, but it’s expected that only a fraction of the movies “announced” so far will make it to the finish line. That said, it’s probably a solid bet that priority projects such as The Batman and Suicide Squad 2 will be among those seeing the light of day.
Now, before we proceed, I ask that you take the following information with a grain of salt because it’s all being regarded at rumor at this point, but you may agree that each bit sounds quite plausible since they align with recent chatter we’ve been hearing.

DC Comics have of late been celebrating the 80th anniversary of both a flagship title, in Action Comics, and their flagship character, Superman. Both are, of course, fully worthy of such accolades. Action Comics has been continuously published since the dawn of the comic book industry, and without Superman there would possibly be no comic book industry. He was the spark that lit the flame. I have already reviewed DC’s 80 Years of Superman book, which was a love letter to every decade of Superman’s adventures, cherry picking some of the many high points from the 1930′s to the present day. It was very much a look back at Action Comics greatest hits, and a great reminder it was too. But what about the future?

If anything, 2018 is proving to be a time for innovation over at DC Comics. Not only have they kicked off their New Age of Heroes initiative, but there’s also that matter of the Sandman Universe giving fans something to look forward to. The fun doesn’t stop there, either, as the publisher has now pulled back the curtain on what’s being called DC Black Label.
Basically, this new imprint affords all-star creative teams the luxury of playing around with the most iconic superheroes around, only without the drag of continuity. As such, it causes us to wonder if the massive hit that is Batman: White Knight was the catalyst for this endeavor, but we’ll take any story that pushes the envelope, no matter what the inspiration.
Naturally, those involving the Caped Crusader will be among those that garner the most attention, with Batman: Damned leading the way.

Even though many enduring elements that we now associate with Superman were products of the Silver Age or the 1940’s radio drama, it’s important that we never forget the contributions that Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster made to comic books – and pop culture as a whole – when they created the Man of Steel for Action Comics #1 back in 1938. After all, that served as the very blueprint for the superhero genre as we know it today.
With that, one could say that the character’s 80th anniversary being celebrated by the release of the one-thousandth issue of Action is a bit too poetic. And appropriately enough, DC is complementing the periodical release of said issue with a commemorative hardcover titled Action Comics #1000: 80 Years of Superman. Suffice it to say, this is shaping up to be a must-own for any fan of Big Blue.
Understandably, many of you reading this...
