But they soon find that without their souls, their love is missing too. So they set out to recruit a crew of the damned for the ultimate heist: break into Hell and steal their souls back.

Comics Author James Tynion IV, Artist Christian Ward Team for Ghost Story ‘Spectregraph’ (Exclusive)
Modern horror comics master James Tynion IV has some new scare fare for 2024, this time a series for upstart publisher Dstlry.
The creator of acclaimed and best-selling comics Something Is Killing the Children and The Nice House on the Lake is teaming with Christian Ward, the writer-artist behind the current Batman miniseries Batman: City of Madness for Spectregraph, described as a ghost story steeped in the decay of a century of capitalism.
The logline is thus: For years, the mansion has sat strangely, nestled into the coastline just a short drive north of Los Angeles. Rumors have haunted the place for years, its owner a titan of American industry, with a strange fascination in the occult and the paranormal. For decades, the richest men and women in the country have whispered to each other, trying to understand what he was building alone in that mansion for all those years. And now finally,...

San Francisco, CA – Today, Viz Media as part of its Viz Originals line launches a one-shot submissions portal which will see American aspiring creators published alongside Japanese legends including Rumiko Takahashi, Junji Ito and Haro Aso via the Viz Manga digital service. The new platform will produce bite-size original manga stories covering a variety of interests from horror to comedy and from action to romance, all locally created by debut and seasoned writers.
The Japanese one-shot model for serialization boasts the most influential and successful track record on the planet for launching debut manga creators. It is a model in which a one-shot (a complete story running between 15 – 60 pages) is published for an already built-in audience who then determine whether it should go on to be serialized as a manga series.

Throughout various renditions of Wonder Woman, the Princess of the Amazons has taken different capabilities, such as being brought to life by the gods after being moulded from clay. She has been seen leaping over tall buildings and flying an invisible jet, but her power has now been confirmed in Wonder Woman #772 by Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad with illustrations by Travis Moore and Paulina Ganuecheau.
Diana has also finally accepted her title as Wonder Woman.

DC Comics released a first look at its March comics, the first batch after the end of the multiverse-spanning Dark Nights: Death Metal and the pause-everything company wide reset Future State, and from our first glimpse of the solicitations, the big changes coming in Future State look like they might be sticking around.
With the sheer volume of change that DC underwent in the last year – new distributors, new release days, personnel changes, cancellations and FanDomes included – there was a lot of speculation about the future of the comics line. This first batch of solicitations provide an interesting answer to that speculation. It looks like, post-Future State, DC’s changing everything. By keeping some things the same.
Here are our biggest takeaways…

It’s time for something new for DC.
For the last few weeks, the publisher has been teasing what that something new will look like, announcing new creative teams for titles like Superman, Action Comics, Wonder Woman and Nightwing, as well as new series for characters and concepts such as Swamp Thing, The Joker, Teen Titans and Suicide Squad.
The Hollywood Reporter can now reveal that the new beginning has its own beginning — an extra-length special issue featuring multiple stories by various creative teams, titled Infinite Frontier No. 0.

Batman: Black and White is an almost 25-year-old anthology series that gave titans of the industry, brilliant artists and writers, a chance to go wild and show off what they could do with the Dark Knight and his world. While the series has been around since 1996, Batman: Black and White has been on hiatus since 2014, but that’s about to change in December.
The anthology returns with a new volume on Dec. 8, as announced by DC Comics. The oversized book will run for six issues and each 48-page issue will feature new short stories from an incredible collection of creators. The first issue features covers from long-time Batman artist and Dark Nights: Death Metalhead Greg Capullo; a Talia cover from Peach Momoko; and one from “The Black Glove”‘s Jh Williams.

I’m not entirely sure why, but DC have always been far better than Marvel with anthology books. Possibly because of their extended history, that they just have that much more material than Marvel had, and could make extra money by packaging old, sorry ‘classic’, reprints with the odd new story or framing sequences. The recent run of DC anniversary issues have also seen them put out some rather good 100 page anthologies, but now with all new material, though with very definite nods towards source material of the past. Which brings us to this ‘Guidebook’. Odd title in a way, as it’s appeared too far down the line into the event to be a guide for anything, but it’s certainly a good opportunity to fill in gaps in the main book, and to give short, sweet glimpses at some of the peripheral characters.

Veteran DC Comics and Batman scribe Scott Snyder is teaming up with superstar artist Tony Daniel for a new monthly series called Nocternal. The book, which will be the first published under Snyder’s new creator-owned imprint at Image Comics, Best Jackett Press, also includes colorist Tomeu Morey, letterer Deron Bennett, and editor Will Dennis.
“Nocternal takes place 10 years after the world is plunged into an everlasting night that turns all living creatures into monstrous ‘shades.’ Enter Valentina ‘Val’ Riggs, a skilled ‘ferryman’ who transports people and goods along deadly unlit roads with her heavily illuminated eighteen-wheeler,” reads the book’s description in a press release. “When an old man promising sanctuary offers Val a job to drive him and his granddaughter up through the Rocky Mountains, she takes it, hoping there might be some truth to his claim. What she finds in the end, though, is something much more horrifying than any shade…...

We knew Dark Nights: Death Metal, the big DC megaevent from Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion and Fco Plascencia, was reworked when it got delayed. DC just announced how much it was reworked.
The main series has been expanded from six to seven issues, with a skip month planned for September. However, to help fill us up for that break, we get two supplemental comics: Dark Nights: Death Metal Guidebook #1 on August 11th, and Dark Nights: Death Metal Legends of the Dark Knights #1 on August 25th.
Death Metal is the follow up to Dark Nights: Metal, the series that introduced the Dark Multiverse and its evil coterie of Batmen (including the Batman Who Laughs) to the Dcu; to Snyder’s Justice League, which brought dark goddess Perpetua in from her prison in the Source Wall, to tear down the existing multiverse and replace it with something more pliable; and to Hell Arisen,...

The South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference and Festivals has announced its 2020 Jury and Special Award winners for this year’s film festival, despite it having been cancelled due to the spread of the coronavirus earlier this month.
The SXSW Film Festival had several Special Awards juries set up, but after the cancellation, the organization expanded to the juried competitions.
“When we curated and announced our slate for the 2020 SXSW Film Festival, filled with an array of wonderful films we were excited to share with our unique audience, we had no idea of the unprecedented impact that Coronavirus would have on all our lives,” Janet Pierson, Director of Film, said. “Our hearts were broken for all the filmmakers who invested so much time and talent in their work, hoping for a transformative experience at our event. We’re honored to at least be able to present our juried and special awards.

As we recently reported, Criterion Collection will release 15 Godzilla films from the Showa era (initially released between 1954–1975) in a Blu-ray box set this October, and we now have a look at a brand new trailer for the release that gives us a tease of the new high-def digital transfers.
"In 1954, an enormous beast clawed its way out of the sea, destroying everything in its path—and changing movies forever. The arresting original Godzilla soon gave rise to an entire monster-movie genre (kaiju eiga), but the King of the Monsters continued to reign supreme: in fourteen fiercely entertaining sequels over the next two decades, Godzilla defended its throne against a host of other formidable creatures, transforming from a terrifying symbol of nuclear annihilation into a benevolent (if still belligerent) Earth protector. Collected here for the first time are all fifteen Godzilla films of Japan’s Showa era, in a landmark set showcasing the technical wizardry,...

Frank Miller returns to Batman’s dark future with Superman, Superboy, and Rafael Grampa.
DC’s Black Label is dropping a pretty big book in December: the latest in the series spawned from The Dark Knight Returns. This one is called The Golden Child, and the most shocking thing about it is probably its artist.
Rafael Grampa, the Eisner-winning Brazilian creator of 5 and Mesmo Delivery, takes the penciling duties for The Golden Child, while Frank Miller returns as writer. Grampa’s art style is like if you threw Sean Murphy, Paul Pope, and Frank Quitely in a blender. Spoilers: that’s real good. And he almost never does interiors!
The Golden Child is a 48-page one-shot, presumably oversized as the other Black Label books are. It picks up three years after the events of the last series. In that one, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Batwoman, and Lara...

Director Andrea Berloff told us about getting the world of The Kitchen right and not taking no for an answer.
The narrative of women in gangster films is something seldom explored. That’s why director Andrea Berloff wanted to adapt The Kitchen, a 2014 comic by Ollie Masters and Becky Cloonan, into a film because rarely does this genre explore the brutality and survival from the women’s perspective. The women of The Kitchen go through the gauntlet as they tackle organized crime, gentrification, and domestic violence in order to build a network that provides a means of survival. The ladies must work together to make their small syndicate work, while thwarting both cops and other mobsters in the process.

Doom Patrol stays hot as Gerard Way's beloved run continues, along with a pair of new Young Animal books
Hot on the heels of the critical smash DC Universe original series, DC announced the return of Gerard Way's Doom Patrol and his pop up imprint, Young Animal. The new book, Doom Patrol: Weight of the World, will be on shelves this July. And much like the last imprint, it looks like we'll be getting some other terrific books out of Young Animal as well.
Way will be sharing writing duties with his co-writer for the final issue of the last series, Jeremy Lambert. Art duties for Doom Patrol: Weight of the World start with James Harvey, and taken up by other folks later in the run like Becky Cloonan (Eisner-nominee for Conan the Barbarian), Doc Shaner (close your eyes and imagine the best Shazam comic you've ever read.

It seems like only yesterday that Action Comics #1000 hit stands, thus observing 80 years of Superman being in continuous publication. As it so happens, the other half of the World’s Finest duo, Batman, will get his turn in the spotlight when Detective Comics #1000 ships this coming spring.
By now, you’ve probably heard of one major reason you should read the milestone issue, and that’s how it’ll introduce a new version of the Arkham Knight to DC canon, one whom we can only assume isn’t Jason Todd. Still, the mystery man’s appearance is eerily similar to that of his video game counterpart, and can be viewed in the gallery below.
In addition to our first look at the newest thorn in the Dark Knight’s side, a bounty of covers can also be found in the accompanying slideshow. Chief among them is the standard wraparound supplied by the master himself,...

Detective Comics #1000 will feature a who's who of legendary Batman creators. Here are the details...
Batman didn't tie the knot last summer, but he still has plenty to celebrate in 2019. In May, the Caped Crusader turns 80 after his debut in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. And there's another milestone: Detective Comics, one of the books that formed the backbone of the publisher we know today as DC Comics, is hitting its 1,000th issue in March. To mark the occasion, DC is publishing an extra-sized issue featuring many of the great creators who have worked on the Dark Knight over the years.
The issue will feature a story from the current Detective Comics creative team of Peter J. Tomasi and Doug Mahnke that will introduce a new version of the Arkham Knight, the villain from the Batman: Arkham Knight video game, to the comics. The issue will also feature a...

Melissa McCarthy heads the Irish mob in New Line’s upcoming The Kitchen.
“What gives men the right to think that they know what’s best for women more than women do,”asks one of the toughest Irish mafia enforcers in DC Entertainment's Vertigo comics series The Kitchen. “You really think that’s our fuckin’ choice to make?” Melissa McCarthy will play one of the leads in New Line Cinema’s adaptation of the crime series, according to Variety. McCarthy joins Girls Trip star and long-time standup comedian Tiffany Haddish.
The Kitchen is being written and directed by Andrea Berloff, who wrote Straight Outta Compton. The Vertigo Comics series comic comes from Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle, and featured an all-female art team. Drawn by Ming Doyle and Jordie Bellaire with cover art Becky Cloonan, The Kitchen was published in 2014.

In the early 1970s, when I was in college, I went to hear Gloria Steinem speak. The modern version of the feminism movement was still in its early stages. My memory of the talk is fuzzy, but I remember her recounting the reaction of men on the left to women’s issues:
“She walks! She talks! She gets down on there belly and slithers like a snake! It’s – a woman who thinks!”
That quote kept coming to my mind while watching She Makes Comics, a terrific new documentary directed by Marisa Stotter. I say “terrific” because it is a thorough overview of women who have worked in the comics industry, from newspaper strips to cosplay costumers. To quote from the promotional material: “Featuring dozens of interviews with such vital figures as Ramona Fradon, Trina Robbins, Joyce Farmer, Karen Berger, Kelly Sue DeConnick, and Becky Cloonan, She Makes Comics is...

The issues faced by women in comics are perennial but have been particularly visible in recent years - whether it is in terms of people speaking out about poor treatment, creators and fans saying appalling things or, on better days, representation and inclusion actually improving in the industry.
There's a whole lot to say on the matter, and today (December 9) director Marisa Stotter's documentary She Makes Comics has arrived to have its say.
The film has done a fantastic job of representing the new and old guard of comics, with interviewees including Jenette Kahn, Louise Simonson, Colleen Doran, Wendi Pini, Kate Leth, Becky Cloonan, Raina Telgemeier, Marjorie Liu, journalist Heidi MacDonald and many more.
