The rebranded Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) will open its forthcoming 77th edition with Nora Fingscheidt’s adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s best-selling memoir The Outrun, starring Saoirse Ronan.
The film had its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and will be released by Studiocanal in the UK and Ireland on September 27.
The pic stars Ronan as a young woman who finds herself washed up back home on the Scottish islands of Orkney as she battles to rebuild her life after a decade of addiction. Ronan, who also co-produced the film, will join filmmaker Nora Fingscheidt (System Crasher) in attendance at this year’s Eiff, alongside writer Amy Liptrot and the film’s producers Sarah Brocklehurst and Dominic Norris.
The Outrun was developed and produced by Sarah Brocklehurst of Brock Media, Dominic Norris of Arcade Pictures, Ronan, and Jack Lowden, with the support of BBC Film and Screen Scotland.

“We had a lot of fun in Istanbul because it was the opening of the season” declares Oscar-nominated cinematographer Danny Cohen (“The King’s Speech”) about the acclaimed third season of the Apple TV+ spy drama “Slow Horses.” It opens in the Turkish city, but then soon finds itself back in the decidedly unglamorous Slough House, the MI5 office reserved for the outcasts and misfits of the British intelligence agency. For our recent webchat he adds with a smile, “you instantly have the idea to sell the audience a complete red herring that they’re going on some sort of ‘James Bond’ travelogue. See the world, travel the globe, beaches, interesting cities, and then to use that as a hook to then drag everybody back to the well-worn interiors of Slough House.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Before you make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Supporting Actor, take a tour of our photo gallery showcasing the men most likely to land in the lineup. Last year’s race was completely dominated by actors from “Succession” and “The White Lotus,” neither of which can produce nominees this time since the former ended last May and the latter won’t return until 2025.
Naturally, this category’s sole presently eligible former winner – Billy Crudup – has emerged as the frontrunner. Among his likeliest competitors are two of his own cast mates: 2020 nominee Mark Duplass and series newcomer Jon Hamm, who won the 2015 Best Drama Actor Emmy for “Mad Men” and is widely expected to take this year’s limited series lead prize for “Fargo.”
Other outside winners in the mix include James Cromwell (“Sugar”; formerly of “American Horror Story”), Nathan Lane (“The Gilded Age”; “Only Murders in the Building”), and...

Based on the combined predictions of over 2,000 Gold Derby users, Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Walton Goggins (“Fallout”) are not generally expected to reap 2024 Emmy bids at this time. However, their chances of soon reaching predicted nominee status greatly improved over the past week thanks to their new category placements. The limited series actress’ odds jumped from 100/1 to 66/1 after she migrated from lead to supporting, while the dramatic actor went from 62/1 to 37/1 by making the opposite move.
Gladstone’s “Under the Bridge” cast mate, Riley Keough, joined her in switching from lead to supporting but still retains her original 100/1 odds. The other two performers who rose above their previous 100/1 odds this week are lead actress Julianne Moore (“Mary & George”) and featured actor Mark Ruffalo (“All the Light We Cannot See”), both of whom hail from limited series.
At this point, the non-continuing series races are proving to be the most dynamic ones overall.

“Outwardly, he gives the impression that he doesn’t care very much,” Gary Oldman recently said about portraying a disgraced MI5 agent on the acclaimed AppleTV+ spy drama “Slow Horses,” explaining that underneath his disheveled exterior, there’s so much more to the man than what meets the eye. “He’s unkempt, and he uses it to play a game. It’s a defense mechanism, and I would say he cares a lot more than most.”
Oldman is mesmerizing in “Slow Horses” as the aloof and often contemptuous Jackson Lamb. He’s a pariah living out his twilight days as the begrudging leader of a group of fellow outcasts to whom he is almost comically obnoxious and offensive. He is truly captivating every time he’s on screen. So, a brilliant performance deserves a brilliant Emmy campaign. “The Curse” has become one of the most talked-about shows this year with its idiosyncratic mix of cringe comedy, weird horror, marital drama, and sentiment proving to be a recipe for brilliance. The acclaimed Showtime drama series follows Nathan Fielder and Oscar winner Emma Stone as a newly married couple who host an HGTV show. They try to conceive a child as they navigate the effects of a curse.
Fielder and Stone’s performances propel the show to greatness and they are ably supported by Benny Safdie, who co-created the show with Fielder. He plays a desperate producer and while the role is scenery-chewing enough, it’s also a great role for filmmaker Safdie to once again show his acting chops, as noted by critics.
Nick Schager (The Daily Beast) proclaimed: “Safdie makes him a behind-the-scenes sorta-psycho who’s as compelling as his on-air compatriots, inhabiting Dougie with a brand...

The second season of Wolf Hall has created headlines in the UK for its diverse casting — and the latest to speak out is an ancestor of one of the Tudor drama’s characters.
Journalist Petronella Wyatt has written a column in The Daily Telegraph questioning the “absurd” decision to cast Egyptian-born Amir El-Masry as Yorkshireman Thomas Wyatt.
The character was played by Slow Horses star Jack Lowden in Season 1 of the BBC/PBS Masterpiece drama, which premiered in 2015.
Wyatt praised The Crown star El-Masry’s acting credentials, but said color-blind casting for a story rooted in British history was tantamount to “cultural appropriation.”
She said Thomas Wyatt, a 16th-century English politician credited with inventing the sonnet, had “never been east of Calais” in his lifetime.

Apple TV’s “Slow Horses” has quickly become one of television’s most exciting shows. Based on the book by Mick Herron, the show combines razor-sharp writing (from showrunner Will Smith of “The Thick of It” fame) with masterclass acting from the likes of Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas.
The series follows the lives of those working at Slough House, a division of MI5 where disgraced agents who have made mistakes are exiled. It’s full of wit and humor, as one would expect from a show created by an alum of “The Thick of It,” but it’s also a genuine thriller, too, as all the best spy stories are. And critics have fallen for it since its inception, continuing to heap praise on this third season.
Fran Hoepfner (Slate) noted: “Part ‘Killing Eve’, part John le Carré lite, ‘Slow Horses’ continues to stand head and shoulders above...

Saoirse Ronan's partner Jack Lowden recommended her latest movie role to her.Jack, 33, had read Amy Liptrot’s book 'The Outrun' and recommended it to Saoirse, 29, during the Covid 19 lockdown, explaining he thought it would be a perfect role for her.Saoirse - who stars in and produced the movie - told The Hollywood Reporter: "It was Jack Lowden, who produced as well, who introduced it to me. “The Outrun,” the adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s deeply raw and lyrical 2016 memoir about addiction, recovery and nature, premiered in Sundance this year to stellar reviews, with many awards prophets already suggesting that the film could take Saoirse Ronan — who stars in and produces the film — back to the Oscars in 2025.

Duncan Jones is back with a brand new project titled Rogue Trooper, an animated adaptation of the same-titled comic book from 2000 Ad.
Variety reports, “The animated film, which is being created with Epic’s 3D tool Unreal Engine 5, was adapted by Jones from the comic book published by 2000 Ad.
“Rogue Trooper, produced by Rebellion and Liberty Films, has wrapped principal photography at Rebellion Film Studios in the U.K. The film is set to be finished next year.”
“Rogue Trooper tells the story of 19, a “Genetic Infantryman,” who finds himself the sole-survivor of an invasion force. Desperate to track down the traitor who sold him and his comrades out, the super soldier is accompanied by three killed-in-action squad mates, whose personalities have been stored in his gun, helmet and rucksack.”
Aneurin Barnard, Hayley Atwell, Jack Lowden, Daryl McCormack and Reece Shearsmith are attached to star, with Variety noting that Barnard will play the title character.

Hayley Atwell has reportedly joined the cast of director Duncan Jones’ animated Rogue Trooper movie, based on the 2000 Ad comic strip of the same name. It’s even wrapped filming!
Word that Moon and Source Code director Duncan Jones was attached to a film adaptation of the 2000 Ad comic strip Rogue Trooper first broke over five years ago, before the world descended into a maelstrom of global disease, military invasions and AI-driven societal collapse – exactly the sort of dystopian stuff you might expect to find in those British sci-fi comics.
After years of eerie silence, though, it sounds as though the adaptation is much further along than we’d previously thought, with Variety reporting that Rogue Trooper has been cast and is already well into production. It’ll star Aneurin Barnard as the title’s genetically-enhanced super soldier. Supporting him will be Hayley Atwell, Jack Lowden (who also appeared in...

Duncan Jones made an incredible debut with his Sam Rockwell-starring sci-fi, Moon. However, his follow-ups haven’t collected as much acclaim with the Groundhog Day-on-a-train thriller Source Code, his step into the big-budget franchise world with Warcraft, and his high-concept Netflix sci-fi, Mute. For years, Jones has been developing an adaptation of the comic Rogue Trooper, which is to be an animated feature. The production has been rolling along, and Variety has revealed the cast of actors that Jones has been able to compile for the film.
Aneurin Barnard, Hayley Atwell and Jack Lowden are reportedly said to be the main cast in the lead roles for the science-fiction animated film. Tornado is the second film from director John Maclean, and it’s just started filming in Scotland. More here:
Here’s a slightly bittersweet story about a filmmaker who made an excellent debut feature and then seemed to disappear. The good bit is – he’s back!
Still, we’ll start with the bitter bit if that’s okay with you. Back in 2015, John Maclean made his directorial debut with the slim, compelling western Slow West. Starring Michael Fassbender and Kodi Smit-McPhee, it’s a terrific western that Maclean also wrote. Yet after he made it, those hoping for a follow-up feature soon after would be disappointed. In fact, it’s taken nearly a decade to get to that point.
He told me back in 2015, back when I was elsewhere, that he worked on one film at a time. His next movie was never going to be quick, but still: it...

Saoirse Ronan was knee-deep in lamb goo on the first day of filming “The Outrun,” a searing look at addiction that premiered on Friday at the Sundance Film Festival.
Adapted from Amy Liptrot’s best-selling memoir, “The Outrun” centers on Rona, a recovering alcoholic who returns home to the Orkney Islands in Scotland after spending a hard-living decade in London. Eager to escape the temptations of her former life, she helps out on her father’s sheep farm, where she isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty.
“I delivered seven lambs,” she said proudly at the Variety Studio presented by Audible. “That was very terrifying. I didn’t know if I was going to kill the lamb as I was pulling ’em out.”
Following the Sundance premiere of “The Outrun,” the 29-year-old actor sat down to talk about how Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” helped her prepare for one of her...

In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.
Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.
Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

“Tom made every project better, made every actor better,” Clooney said of Wilkinson in a statement. “He was the epitome of elegance, and he will be dearly missed by all of us.”
McKean posted to X (formerly known as Twitter) that Wilkinson was a “great actor,...
