Exclusive: Deadline’s annual Read the Screenplay series spotlighting awards season’s most talked-about scripts kicks off this year with Fair Play, Chloe Domont’s debut feature that Netflix acquired after its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
Domont, whose TV directing credits include Billions and Suits, made her feature screenwriting and helming debut with the pic, which was spawned via T-Street and MRC’s Emerging Filmmaker Program and counts Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman among the executive producers.
The script for the relationship thriller follows Emily (Bridgerton‘s Phoebe Dynover) and Luke (Alden Ehrenreich), who work together at a cutthroat financial firm and are also a couple. When a coveted promotion arises, the pair’s once supportive exchanges begin to sour as power and gender dynamics irrevocably shift, forcing them to face the true price of success and the limits of ambition.
Dumont said the film’s themes resonate in these times.

Fair Play is a 2023 thriller film written and directed by Chloe Domont. The film stars Phoebe Dynevor, Alden Ehrenreich, Eddie Marsan, and Rich Sommer.
“Fair Play” is a movie about ambition and how a professional relationship can affect a romantic relationship. In every place, there is an expression for this that ultimately recommends the same thing: not mixing love and work.
It’s difficult not to do so when, as in this case, both protagonists work ten hours a day and have no time for anything else but the company.
Plot
Emily and Luke are engaged, attractive, and have a promising future. There’s only one problem: they work at the same company, and company protocol doesn’t accept it. The problem arises when she gets promoted and he slowly starts losing his position in the complex corporate organization.

The first sound you hear in the extraordinary relationship thriller/psychodrama “Fair Play”? It’s the lingering roar of the rocket writer-director Chloe Domont is about to launch into space to tear through gendered power dynamics, male-dominated beats of a high-wired workplace and masculine fragility.
In reality, it’s a moan you hear, from none other than Donna Summer at the start of her sultry song “Love to Love You.” Yes, you’re supposed to feel a subtle erotic vibe—the song choice, in that regard, is anything but subtle to kickstart seasoned TV director Domont’s simmering and gradually explosive feature debut.
Before we know it, Emily and Luke find themselves in the bathroom of a wedding party following in the song’s footsteps, to get it on in a hurry. Played with volatile precision by Phoebe Dynevor (“Bridgerton”) and Alden Ehrenreich (“Oppenheimer”), the two are desperately into each other’s sexuality,...

"The only man I let walk all over me is you!" Netflix has debuted a spicy second trailer for Chloe Domont's exceptional film Fair Play, still one of my personal favorites. This premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival in January, and it's set to open in theaters in October very soon (first trailer here). An incredibly taut thriller set on Wall Street. An unexpected promotion at a cutthroat hedge fund in NYC pushes a young couple’s relationship to the brink, threatening to unravel far more than their recent engagement. Phoebe Dynevor stars as Emily, with Alden Ehrenreich as Luke, and a cast with Eddie Marsan, Rich Sommer, Sebastian De Souza, Sia Alipour, and Brandon Bassir. I wrote in my glowing review from Sundance, after watching the audience burst into huge applause at the end: "I absolutely loved this film, I felt the exhilaration build inside of me. I...

Well, this will go down as one of the most shocking cancellations ever.
Hulu has canceled the Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult comedy The Great after three seasons.
The sad news was first reported by Deadline.
Created, written, and executive produced by Tony McNamara, The Great followed Catherine The Great's story as "an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter," according to the official description.
"Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change."
"All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside."
News of the cancellation comes over three months on from the premiere of The Great Season 3, which unspooled all episodes on May 12.

Alden Ehrenreich and Phoebe Dynevor have a tough time navigating a clandestine romance while competing for a coveted job promotion in the first trailer for the Netflix thriller Fair Play.
From writer and director Chloe Domont, the movie was a hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and focuses on Luke (Ehrenreich) and Emily (Dynevor), co-workers at a high-powered hedge fund firm who have recently gotten engaged. While they continue to keep the relationship a secret, dynamics between the pair get tense as both aim to achieve professional gains despite the costs.
In the trailer that was released Tuesday ahead of the film’s Oct. 13 streaming launch, Dyvenor’s Emily says, “We both can’t keep working here.” This leads Ehrenreich’s Luke to reply, “I’m not quitting.”
Later, Emily asks, “Why is it so hard to accept that I deserve that job?”
Eddie Marsan, Rich Sommer and Sebastian De Souza also star.

Netflix has released the first trailer for the erotic thriller “Fair Play,” which the streamer acquired for $20 million in one of the biggest deals out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
“Bridgerton” star Phoebe Dynevor and “Oppenheimer” actor Alden Ehrenreich star in the film, which unravels the complex relationship of a power-hungry couple contending for power at a cutthroat financial firm. “Fair Play” marks writer-director Chloe Domont’s debut feature film, following her time helming episodes of the HBO series “Ballers” and Showtime’s “Billions.” The film also stars Eddie Marsan (“Ray Donovan”), Rich Sommer (“Mad Men”) and Sebastian De Souza (“The Great”).
Following its premiere, “Fair Play” sparked a bidding war among several key distributors, including Searchlight and Neon.
Per the film’s official synopsis, “When a coveted promotion at a cutthroat financial firm arises, once supportive exchanges between lovers Emily (Dynevor) and Luke (Ehrenreich) begin to sour into something more sinister.

"Look into this, let me know what you think." Here we go! Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for Chloe Domont's extraordinary new film Fair Play, which is still one of our Top 10 films of the year so far. This first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival in January (where I saw it), and it's also playing at the Toronto Film Festival next coming up in September. An unexpected promotion at a cutthroat hedge fund in NYC pushes a young couple’s relationship to the brink, threatening to unravel far more than their recent engagement. It's a remarkably taut, intense film about toxic masculinity and how many men get angry when a woman gets promoted over them. Phoebe Dynevor stars as Emily, with Alden Ehrenreich as Luke, plus Eddie Marsan, Rich Sommer, Sebastian De Souza, Sia Alipour, and Brandon Bassir. I wrote in my glowing review, after watching...

Chloe Domont’s “Fair Play” sparked one of the few bidding wars at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and Netflix has dropped the first trailer for all to see. At a festival where even seemingly surefire titles like “Cat Person” went without a buyer, “Fair Play” was snagged f0r $20 million from Netflix. That’s shy of the record $25 million that Apple paid for eventual Best Picture Oscar winner “Coda,” but who’s counting?
The relationship drama/corporate melodrama stars Phoebe Dynevor (“Bridgerton”) and Alden Ehrenreich (“Oppenheimer”) as a pair of co-workers secretly dating who come to emotional blows over a coveted promotion. The young lovers struggle with the price of success and the limits of professional ambition as writer/director Domont’s feature debut deconstructs the destructive gender dynamics that can pit partners against each other amid a rapidly transforming world.

During a caustically funny early scene in Chloe Domont’s taut, female-forward update on the ‘90s erotic thriller model, Fair Play, entry-level employees sit on the main floor of high-roller New York investment firm Crest Capital, watching one of those numbing Hr video seminars about creating a safer workplace. “The Great” doubled its Emmy nomination tally last month with four bids for its second season, including one in Best Comedy Actress for Elle Fanning. A first-time nominee, Fanning was snubbed in 2020 for the first season and was by no means a lock this time despite nominations at the Golden Globe, Critics Choice and Screen Actors Guild Awards. But she managed to get in and has an amazing episode submission to boot.
Fanning’s episode, “Alone at Last,” is an acting tour de force as Catherine (Fanning) experiences a roller coaster of emotions. The monarch has her husband Peter III (Nicholas Hoult) beaten for murdering a noble before locking him up in his room. She also has been grieving her former lover Leo (Sebastian de Souza), whose killing she had to order last season. To prevent her nightmares about him, she takes a drug to stay awake, causing her to make illogical decisions.

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Elle Fanning is entering “The Great” episode “Alone at Last” as her 2022 Emmy Award submission for Best Comedy Actress. The episode aired on November 19 and is the third episode of the Hulu comedy’s second season.
In this installment, in the aftermath of Leo’s (Sebastian de Souza) death, Catherine (Fanning) locks up Peter (Nicholas Hoult) with the corpse of his mother and doesn’t allow herself to grieve Leo. Instead, she takes drugs to stay awake so she doesn’t dream about him, leading to some questionable decisions in this manic state. Later, she finds catharsis when she admits that she could not have saved him.

Just one month after debuting its sophomore season to rave reviews, Hulu’s “The Great” has shared with Gold Derby the names of the 12 cast members who are eligible for the ensemble prize at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Last year’s SAG nominated star Nicholas Hoult returns for the second season as Russian Emperor Peter, who begins this second installment in the midst of a coup attempt by his wife, Empress Catherine (Elle Fanning). See the alphabetical list below.
“The Great” is looking for its second consecutive nomination for comedy ensemble at the SAG Awards after earning a bid at the last ceremony for its freshman season. Star Hoult is also looking to score back-to-back bids in the Comedy Actor category. Gold Derby expects the series will not only match its previous nominations haul, but add a third citation for Fanning. According to our current combined odds, “The Great” is in fourth in ensemble,...

I would love to say that prejudice is confined to the past, but as we see on a daily basis it is still rampant today. If there is one seemingly unbreakable connection to our ancestors is our ability to be intolerant. Stories filter through the centuries of racism, sexism, and homophobia which still trickle into today’s supposedly more enlightened society.
These dark facets of our nature collide in the brooding and brilliant Lapwing. Screenwriter Laura Turner and director Philip Stevens have crafted a striking and stunning debut feature which grapples fiercely with love, xenophobia, and the wild coasts of England.
Lapwing revolves around a coastline settlement of salt famers, somewhat led by the aggressive David. When a group of Romani settle into the local marshes, David rules and cheats them with a fierce hand – as he similarly does his fellow farmers. Philip Stevens and Laura Turner may have crafted one of the bleakest films of the year so far, with stomach-churning moments juxtaposed with the romantic scenery of rural Lincolnshire. Turner’s powerfully nihilistic script and Stevens’ gritty translation of her screenplay onto the big screen most certainly make them newcomers in the industry to get excited about.
In 1555 England, Queen Mary’s Egyptian Act means that all Gypsies must be expelled from England, any who stay run the risk of execution, as does anyone who helps them remain in the country. David (Emmett J Scanlan), leads a small community of salt farmers, and has arranged for illegal passage by boat for an Indian Gypsy family in return for payment. When Patience (Hannah Douglas), an aphonic English girl, falls for Egyptian son Rumi (Sebastian De Souza), David’s wrath endangers both communities.

No one in “The Great” is living a particularly healthy life, and that’s only partially due to the fact that this loose version of Russian history fixes its gaze on the 18th century. Empress Catherine (Elle Fanning), her recently deposed husband Peter (Nicholas Hoult), and the assembled imperial court are all teeming with such self-destructive tendencies that it’s difficult for them to sort out their own lives, much less the country they ostensibly rule.
The show’s Season 2, now available on Hulu, has an even more claustrophobic feel than its first. That’s not nothing considering the series starts with Catherine plopped in a strange new aristocratic ecosystem where she’s brought to be little more than a breeder of heirs. But following a successful coup against Peter initiated in the waning moments of the first season’s finale, Catherine has taken her place at the top of the Russian food chain.

Turns out lemon juice isn't an effective form of contraception! Season one of Hulu's The Great ended with a cliffhanger, leaving us wondering about the fate of the Russian kingdom, hurting for a heartbroken Leo (Sebastian de Souza) and worrying about a pregnant Catherine (Elle Fanning). In other words, Catherine's mission to rid the Russian people of a bumbling Peter (Nicholas Hoult) is going to be a success, along with the birth of her baby boy Paul. To this we say,...

“The Great” had a great SAG nominations morning, landing bids in Best Comedy Ensemble and Best Comedy Male Actor for Nicholas Hoult, but the empress herself was robbed. Elle Fanning did not get an individual citation for Best Comedy Female Actor for her turn as Catherine the Great, despite racking up Critics’ Choice and Golden Globe nominations for the performance. So why the discrepancy, SAG Awards?
See ‘The Crown’ leads 2021 Golden Globes nominations with 6, followed by ’Schitt’s Creek’ with 5
Admittedly, Best Comedy Female Actor was a tough category to crack this year, with the five slots taken up by Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy from “Schitt’s Creek,” Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini from “Dead to Me” and Kaley Cuoco from “The Flight Attendant.” Thankfully for Fanning, she does technically have a nomination this year as part of the ensemble for “The Great,” so it is far from a disappointing day.
