After releasing The Colorado Kid and Joyland via the Hard Case Crime imprint, Stephen King made his grand debut into the world of hard-boiled crime fiction with Mr. Mercedes. The first in a trilogy, the 2014 novel introduced readers to Bill Hodges, a crusty, retired detective who finds his golden years interrupted by the taunts of a psychopathic killer he failed to apprehend.
A divisive book among the King faithful, Mr. Mercedes is nonetheless an important one, as it introduces Holly Gibney, a recluse-turned-investigator King would go on to feature in four subsequent novels (and one novella), including last year’s Holly.
Join The Losers’ Club’s Randall Colburn, Jenn Adams, Ashley Casseday, and Rachel Reeves as they detail the book’s origins, how it differs from the author’s previous forays into crime, and the ways in which it reflects evolving societal fears about domestic terrorism. They also discuss the...

“Chip! Our mother is Charles Manson!”
What does it mean to be a good mother? Is it the ability to cook the perfect meatloaf or a talent for bird calls? Is it an impeccably turned out family each Sunday morning and an organized recycling setup? These may be important to a picture-perfect suburban life, but when it comes to being an effective mother, they’re merely window dressing. What truly makes a mother succeed is a dedication to the wellbeing of her children. But should that extend to murder? John Waters explores these questions in the 1994 film Serial Mom featuring a murderous mom who will do anything to give her kids a happy life.
Beverly Sutphin (Kathleen Turner) is the picture of maternal perfection. Her charming children and dreamy husband gather around the breakfast table each morning to discuss their lives and the hot button issues of the day. But...

“And then the world exploded.”
Fifty years ago, Stephen King published a slim novel about a lonely girl finding her power and the world of horror has never been the same. We all know the story by now. Outcast Carrie White gets bullied by her classmates and abused by her ultra-religious mother. Good Girl Sue Snell convinces her boyfriend to take Carrie to prom in her place. Mean Girl Chris Hargenson orchestrates a plot to get Carrie voted Prom Queen then coronates her with a bucket of pig’s blood. They all laugh and Carrie unleashes her deadly powers of telekinesis. King’s story of high school morality and bloody revenge has woven itself into the fabric of American life, extending its reach well past genre limits. To mark this milestone, The Losers’ Club celebrates the birth of a legend with a Twinner book episode on the 1974 novel Carrie.

“Question not my judgment, Malachai. I am the giver of His word.”
It’s the summer of 1984. The pavement is hot, the corn is high, and the eerie voices of children can be heard singing in a distant barn. Something sinister walks behind the rows. Is it a cult of killer children ripped from the Old Testament? Is a vengeful deity who demands human sacrifice? Is it a roving mound of dirt speeding through the corn or a loud little girl who draws in her sleep? In the latest episode of The Long Watch, The Losers’ Club will pick up their scythes and venture into the fragrant fields to unearth the secrets of Fritz Kiersch’s Children of the Corn.
Burt (Peter Horton) and Vicky (Linda Hamilton) are driving across the country when a detour off the main highway takes them straight through a never ending sea of corn. When...

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, it all comes to an end as Rachel Reeves searches for scares in the suburbs.
In the back half of the 1980s, the American suburbs experienced a resurgence in popularity. As global instabilities stabilized and economies began to boom, moving to the suburbs became a sign of financial and professional success. Primarily populated by young families, the suburbs also became associated with traditional family values, safety, and community. However, as any true crime enthusiast knows, some things (and some people) are not always as innocent as they appear.
With Hollywood quick to hop on this trend train, what resulted was a wealth of interesting Frankenstein-style film ideas that simultaneously displayed the absurd excess and nostalgic conservatism the...

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Rachel Reeves lists the five baddest teen queens of 1989.
Bridging the gap between the ’80s and ’90s, 1989 was an interesting year for horror. With a robust roster of strong slasher icons to lean on, innovative sub-genres and a thriving physical media industry, 1989 desperately clung to the last gasp of the ’80s while tentatively experimenting with what the ’90s might bring. Along with a wealth of later-entry franchise sequels, this indecisive decade straddling also resulted in some eclectic representations of all-to-familiar tropes, including the “bad girl.”
The allure of the bad girl is one of the most enduring tropes in horror film history. Whether labeled as a witch, vampire, monster, sexually promiscuous, uppity or any other brand of stigmatizing language,...

“Don’t you want to be an urban legend, Nat? All your friends are now.”
We heard from a friend of a friend of our roommate’s sister’s brother that there’s a killer on the loose at Pendleton University. Twenty-five years after administration officials swept a horrible tragedy under the rug, the current crop of attractive students are preparing to memorialize the dead in the most respectful way they can: by throwing a huge frat party. Sensitive Natalie (Alicia Witt) is trying to make a fresh start when her own painful past pushes its way to the surface. It seems someone is trying to send a message by murdering her friends and staging their deaths as urban legends. With the anniversary of the massacre approaching, Natalie has only her best friend Brenda (Rebecca Gayheart) and ethically challenged, but hunky reporter Paul (Jared Leto) to find the killer before...

“How’s your marriage?”
What a long dark night it’s been on this trip through Stephen King’s 2011 collection Full Dark, No Stars. After traveling back to 1922 and taking a detour through Big Driver, Losers Justin Gerber, Rachel Reeves, and Jenn Adams make a pit stop in Derry for a nasty little tale of schadenfreude and revenge with the third tale of this sordid collection in Fair Extension.
Then, it’s full speed ahead to Castle Rock with the collection’s final novella A Good Marriage. Inspired by the horrific crimes of Btk, King’s story follows a happily married woman who finds a life-altering secret buried in her garage. Topics range from the ethics of True Crime storytelling, the fine line between art and exploitation, and the lies that get us through the day.
Stream the episode below and return next week when the Losers head to Hollywood King.

In a statement early on Sunday afternoon, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (Dcms) said the claims were “deeply concerning” and urged the BBC to keep ministers informed of its actions.
“As a public service broadcaster in receipt of public funding, senior officials have stressed to the BBC that the allegations must be investigated urgently and sensitively, with [Dcms] kept informed,” the department said.
Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer and Tim Davie, the Director General of the BBC, are due to hold talks later today.

In October of 1998, it wasn’t only Chucky who got lucky, it was Universal. Thanks to foresight of writer Don Mancini and producer David Kirschner, the studio capitalized on the still-thriving post-Scream wave by resurrecting their Child’s Play franchise. At the time, the series had been gathering dust for most of the decade after the less-than returns of 1991’s Child’s Play 3.
Enter Bride of Chucky.
Directed by Ronny Yu, the stylish horror comedy doubled down on the dolls, pairing Brad Dourif‘s foul-mouthed friend ’til the end with Jennifer Tilly, who would become the Chuckster’s bride Tiffany. What’s more, Mancini opted to sideline the humans, giving not only fans what they wanted, but what the franchise ultimately needed in that moment.
Now, nearly 25 years later, the Halloweenies hit the road and head towards Hackensack, New Jersey, where they’ll spend two episodes revisiting the 1998 blockbuster. Together, Justin Gerber,...

The Losers gather at Boston International Airport to close out their coverage on Stephen King‘s Cell. Now that they’ve explored the 2006 novel, they’re dialing into the 2016 adaptation. Originally announced as an Eli Roth project two months after the book’s release, the film spent 10 torturous years in development hell before finally being unleashed.
What came to fruition is a feature by filmmaker Tod Williams that stars John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Owen Teague, Stacey Keach, and Joshua Mikel. What’s more, King himself penned the screenplay alongside 2009’s Last House on the Left scribe Adam Alleca. Was it worth the wait?

Rachel Sennott has achieved one of her life’s goals by telling Seth Meyers a racy story involving one of his former interns.
In May, the Bodies Bodies Bodies star shared a tweet she’d posted manifesting her future appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers.
It reads: “If I ever go on Seth Meyers I’m going to tell him that I gave my first b***job to a guy who was an intern there and I picked him bc I thought interning at Seth Meyers was cool.”
On Wednesday (28 September), Sennott made her debut guest appearance on the talk show, informing Meyers that she’s waited nearly five or six years to share her Nsfw story.
“This [happened] before I’m in the business,” she clarified, explaining that she grew up “pretty religious” and at one point vowed to wait until marriage for sex.

The This is Going to Hurt soundtrack Vinyl LP will be released on 21 October, with £1 from every sale going to NHS charities.
The series starring Ben Whishaw, released earlier this year, is based on Adam Kay’s multi-million copy bestseller This is Going to Hurt.
The original soundtrack was written and performed for the series by Jarv Is – the band comprising Jarvis Cocker, Serafina Steer, Emma Smith, Andrew McKinney, Adam Betts & Jason Buckle.
Each episode features at least one song with lyrics by Cocker, who had access to the scripts (adapted by Adam Kay from his own book) from an early stage in the production process.
Most of the soundtrack is made up from live takes featuring the entire band – often recorded whilst they watched the playback of key sequences from the series: “It’s our love song to the NHS,” said Cocker on the record.

University Challenge will see a mother and son pair up to compete in the prestigious quiz for the first time.
Rachel and Louis Collier both made it to the University College London team after studying at the university during the same year.
Rachel, 53, is studying part-time for a PhD in Classics at the university while working as a teacher.
Her son Louis, 26, meanwhile has received a postgraduate certificate in education from the institution and teaches physics and mathematics.
It was Rachel who suggested that Louis apply for the Ucl team when the students’ union began the selection process last year.
As an undergraduate, Louis had been selected for his university’s team, but they had never made it to the rounds shown on TV.

The creator of a widely shared petition calling for ITV to “axe” This Morning presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield has shared an update.
Schofield and Willoughby prompted a substantial public backlash when Queen Elizabeth II was lying in state, after they were given a separate access line for media.
ITV viewers complained that the pair had “skipped” the queue to see the queen’s coffin. The queue led to people waiting for up to 14 hours to get in.
At the time of writing, nearly 75,000 people have signed the petition calling for Willoughby and Schofield to be taken off air.
The petition’s creator shared an update on the original Change.org post.
“I’ve asked ITV to deliver any responses relating to this to the public and not to me, as I won’t be following the news, or watching the programme, or sharing anything online, or through social media,...

The British pound fell to an all-time low against the dollar as markets reacted to the UK’s biggest tax cuts in 50 years.
The pound plunged more than 4 early Monday morning to 1.0327 before stabilizing at around 1.06. The steep slide came as trading opened in Asia and Australia, extending an almost 2 drop from Friday and fueling predictions that the pound could continue to fall to parity with the US dollar.
If the pound continues to stand at this low level against the dollar, imports of commodities such as oil and gas, which are priced in dollars, will be more expensive to buy. British people visiting the US will also find that their money does not go as far as it once did. In short, you will be paying more for whatever you buy overseas.
On the production side, this trend is good for U.S. firms who want to shoot in...

Susanna Reid had an awkward exchange on Monday’s (26 September) episode of Good Morning Britain, after cracking a joke about Rachel Reeves’s new haircut.
The ITV morning show host made the comments during a conversation about tax cuts in the new government mini-budget.
She alluded to the fact that it appeared further cuts had been made, referencing Reeves’s hair, an exchange that was made even more awkward when Reeves had trouble hearing the Gmb host, forcing her to repeat the joke.
Co-host Ed Balls appeared surprised by Reid’s comments, remarking: “Good job I didn’t say that about her hair – I’d be in total trouble!”
However, Reid defended her comment on air, claiming that a new hairstyle on a public figure such as an MP was noticeable.
The awkward moment in the Gmb studio also fell flat with many viewers at home, who shared their thoughts on social media.

Something strange is going on. The Halloweenies are back at the cabin, only there’s no Ash. The Delta is outside, sure, but there’s no sign of our chainsaw-wielding lothario. No, there’s a new darkness within these woods — one that’s wrapped in plastic and harnessed by barbed wire. You might call it an abomination. Damn, things sure got ugly around here… and fast.

After conquering the box office in 1989 with Pet Sematary, director Mary Lambert returned to Ludlow, Maine in 1992 to dig up another ghastly tale deep within the Micmac burial grounds. This one would not be penned by Stephen King, but Little Nemo and Lionheart scribe Richard Outten, who strayed far, far away from the path of King’s grisly 1983 novel.
Starring Edward Furlong, Anthony Edwards, and Clancy Brown, Pet Sematary Two received mixed to negative reviews upon its arrival in August 1992. Since then, however, the sequel has amassed a cult following, namely from horror hounds who praise Clancy’s out-of-control turn and Lambert’s stylish touch that carries much of the film.
