Shaman #1
Written by Ben Kahn

Self-Published (See KickStarter)
Do you like tracking down old issues of Hellblazer or reading recent horror comics like Wytches or Afterlife with Archie? Do you also like picking up old Justice League/Justice Society crossovers or basking in a retro-styled superhero comic, like James Robinson’s Golden Age (or most comics by him) or even something like the recent Rocketeer/Spirit crossover? Then, Shaman #1 is the comic for you. It is about a middle-aged magician Shaman, whose job is to basically resurrect old superheroes and people for various reasons. He is joined by his snarky teen daughter LL and the teleporting superhero Vanisher in this first issue where they fight Vanisher’s grandfather, the first Vanisher, who isn’t happy about being brought back.

Earth 2 #32

Pencils by Andy Smith & Airi Kamiyama
Inks by Trevor Scott & Airi Kamiyama
Colors by Peter Pantazis
Published by DC Comics
Well, it’s finally come, the last issue of Earth 2. The reason Earth 2 and its weekly series Earth 2: World’s End gets reviewed every week is that despite all the bad worlds said about in the last six months, Earth 2 used to be one of the best books coming out of DC. In fact, it was one of the few books that made the New 52 somewhat justified in its existence. Instead of rehashing older stories or making embarrassing changes to characters older than the company that published them, Earth 2 did something different. It build a whole new world from the ground up, embracing its comic book roots by being a series about ordinary...

In the southern wastes of Battleworld, two unholy factions wage neverending war. This June, that war reaches a new level of horror in Age of Ultron vs. Marvel Zombies #1 – a new Secret Wars series from Eisner-award winning writer James Robinson and critically-acclaimed artist Steve Pugh.
There are regions of Battleworld so dangerous, they are walled off from the remainder of this patchwork planet. Here, on the far side of the impenetrable barrier known as the Shield, hope is gone. In these unholy wastes, on the border between two domains, the genocidal robotic armies of Ultron wage unending war upon the domain of rotting, flesh-eating corpses that lies just to the East. Pity those poor souls trapped between these two unstoppable forces, for their end is most definitely assured! Will you choose death by flesh-eating, super-powered living dead? Or by an unending army of indestructible, undefeatable robots? One thing is for certain,...

Another week means another issue of Earth 2: World’s End and while the chance for this series to be anything beyond cheap tie-in material to DC’s Convergence event has long passed by, this issue is a shocking improvement to what has usually be a painful slog to read. It’s true that this series has made the terrible decision to split art duties between plotlines instead of individual issues such as with Futures End and Batman Eternal, but for once this series does something that resembles competence.
The story this week is surprisingly better focused than the series has been thus far.

Artificial intelligence bots versus zombies: place your bets. Just one of many showdowns set to occur in Battleworld, the setting for the upcoming new Secret Wars that will forever change the Marvel comic book universe as we know it, Age of Ultron Vs. Marvel Zombies has been announced as a new printed series, with a look at the cover art and preview pages giving us a look at the zombified villains taking on Ultron's army.
A creepy conflict between two forces with no consciences, Age of Ultron Vs. Marvel Zombies will see Ultron's artificial intelligence ranks going up against the rotted flesh of a super-powered living dead legion. On the Battleworld planet, the two rival factions will fight for both territorial supremacy and sole possession of ruling over humanity. It’s come to my attention as of late that I tend to write mostly negative reviews. Despite the general consensus, I don’t find much in writing bad things about comics. I’d prefer to read good books over bad ones any day. It’s just that I read more things from DC Comics than other publishing companies and that’s come back to bit me. Usually there’s at least one book in the New 52 that I think keeps the entire line not deserving of complete condemnation, but now that Earth 2 has been turned into drek, that’s changed. Pretty much nothing from DC interests me anymore, save for Jeff Parker’s run on Aquaman for being one of the few books that has a sense of fun to it. But right now, I want to take a break from bad mouthing comics. I honestly want to like titles.

Fantastic Four #642
Written by James Robinson
Pencilled by Leonard Kirk
Inked by Karl Kesel
Colored by Jesus Aburtov
Published by Marvel Comics
Fantastic Four #642 does some things very well, like depicting action scenes, actually doing something with the much maligned Heroes Reborn Universe, or having a couple third act plot twists. However, most of the story is rooted in superhero cliches ranging from heroes fighting then teaming up to villainous monologues and even a weak riff on Watchmen. Leonard Kirk and Karl Kesel’s art fares well in the heroes vs. heroes (and villains) fighting areas, but not so much in the emotional department as Kesel’s inks don’t give his characters much definition in their faces and body movements. For most of the story, the art comes off as fairly loose and by the numbers, and Aburtov’s colors match it as the various superhero costumes lack any visual pop.

Art by Andy Smith & Trevor Scott, Tyler Kirkham, Cliff Richards & Thony Silas
Published by DC Comics
At this point, reviewing what is in theory Earth 2 seems like a moot point. If the last two issues say anything, it’s that this series is no longer meant to be a standalone title as much as it’s simply tie in material for DC Comics’ weekly book, Earth 2: World’s End. Issue #28 was little short of an origin anthology for the Furies of Apokolips while #29 was a pointless and disappointing side quest with what is by far World’s End’s weakest plot line. It’s depressing to see what was once one of the few series good enough to justify DC’s reboot be turned into event comic tie-in material and abandon the awe inspiring groundwork set by the legendary...

All-New Invaders #13
Written by James Robinson
Art by Steve Pugh
Published by Marvel Comics
With James Robinson’s focus on assembling the modern roster of the Golden Age team, the Invaders, issue #13 comes off rather strange. Simply, it’s an entire issue with mostly dialogue between supporting characters of the series. It’s not bad as it fleshes out the scope of the book and is being used for Robinson to explore the multi-faceted cosmic side of the Marvel universe though it does risk alienating some readers.
The issue is a meeting on a giant ancient chessboard floating through the void with the play-pieces all representing alien races, some well-known and others lost to the sands of time. The characters are the new Tanalth the Pursuer and the Eternal and Golden Age hero Makkari. At the risk of death, they meet for they sense something is very wrong in the...

‘Earth 2′ #29
Written by Marguerite Bennett & Mike Johnson
Pencils by Andy Smith; Inks by Trevor Scott
Published by DC Comics
‘Earth 2’ #29 marks the torch passing from series writer Tom Taylor to Marguerite Bennett and her fellow ‘Earth 2: World’s End’ writing team. Unfortunately, it’s off to a rough start as #29 marks the first genuinely bad issue in nearly two and half years of solid releases.
With the start of “World’s End,’ the ‘Earth 2’ main book has changed to fit alongside its sibling series’ format. That’s not to say the change was bad. In fact, the first issue to tie into ‘World’s End’ is one of the greatest in the entire series. However, it’s clear now that ‘Earth 2’ is mostly a book that serves to better flesh out story points and characters not fully explored in ‘World’s End.’

Another week means another issue of World’s End. While there is once again a block paragraph that makes up the writers’ credits, this is the first time World’s End shows the potential promised with issue one.
The numerous plotlines are much more balanced this time around, giving each character the proper amount of attention without taking up too many panels, the one exception being Queen Marella. The four Furies are stopped, at least for now, when Doctor Fate defeats Famine but senses that Jimmy Olsen is about to achieve a great power and abandons Hawkgirl and Flash, Marella makes a deal with some sleeping Lovecraftian monsters to exact vengeance for Atlantis,...

There has been a debate amongst comics wags that the rumor about Marvel cancelling their flagship title, Fantastic Four, during their 75th anniversary celebration was just that – a rumor. Marvel/Disney couldn’t possibly be that petty. Bleeding Cool.com‘s Rich Johnson, who carried the story, steadfastly stood behind his sources. Good for him.
Evidently, Marvel wasn’t happy with how 20th Century Fox was treating the property in the forthcoming movie reboot, they didn’t want to support it and so were cancelling the comic book. Ok, but would they cancel all those X-Men titles if they didn’t like the way Fox handled their latest X-movie? Of course not. Nor did Marvel cancel the Spider-Man titles despite the atrocious way Columbia handled the Spidey flicks of late – and they’ve got release dates for three or four more.

This month’s issue of Earth 2 does something quite unexpected by focusing on the Furies of Apokolips. A major question that’s loomed over this series since the announcement of World’s End is what role will the Earth 2 main book play in the story. Upon reading issue #28, it’s apparent that the series shall serve as a companion title to World’s End telling side stories that can’t fit within the pages of the weekly book.
The issue is split up into four stories, each about one of the furies of Apokolips and how they came to serve Darkseid. What’s quite the surprise is that eachFury is a native of a classic alien world within the DC universe. Pestilence...

Marvel Entertainment has done what Dr. Doom, the Skrulls, and even the world-devouring might of Galactus couldn't do: killed the Fantastic Four. During a Sunday-afternoon panel at New York Comic-Con, Marvel editor in chief Axel Alonso and current Fantastic Four writer James Robinson confirmed what observers had suspected for months: the company is closing up shop on its longest-running series after a world-changing 53-year run. The news has been met with a collective shrug of resignation among the comics community, but attention should be paid. This is no small event in the history of superheroes. It's a premature ending, and it was most likely borne of the comics economy's worst tendencies in the age of blockbuster superhero flicks.A rep for Marvel said the company has no comment on the reasoning for Fantastic Four's cancellation. But a glance at the Fantastic Four's licensing situation starts to tell a very plausible...

Marvel Comics has officially confirmed the end of Fantastic Four.
After rumours and teases of the series' cancellation, writer James Robinson said at New York Comic Con that the title will be "going away for a while".
"The challenges of taking over Fantastic Four is taking over the legacy of Jonathan Hickman and Matt Fraction and Mark Waid and all these amazing writers that came before me," he said (via Newsarama).
"So I wanted to honour that, but also tell this story of my own.
"The book is going to be going away for a while," Robinson continued. "I'm building up to the end of the Fantastic Four."
The comic will return to its original numbering in the run-up to its 2015 conclusion with the 'The End is FOURever' storyline.
Marvel has been rumoured for some time to be ending the classic comic, allegedly to spite 20th Century Fox's Fantastic Four reboot film.

Prepare to say goodbye to Marvel's First Family next year with the cancellation of the Fantastic Four now official. Details are scarce at the moment, but the news was confirmed by Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso and writer James Robinson. The latter praised the many writers who have come before him (Matt Fraction, Jonathan Hickman and Mark Waid were referenced) and talked a little about bringing back the classic blue costumes and once again uniting the heroes as the team readers have always known and loved. "They're going to all come back and be the team that you love. Everyone will have their moment, from Sharon Ventura to Wyatt Wingfoot." The writer would then go on to talk about the cancellation of the series, stating, "The book is reverting to its original numbers, and the book is going away for a while. I'm moving towards the end of 'Fantastic Four.'...

The Life After #2 (Oni): The first issue of Josh Fialkov and Gabo’s The Life After was one of the best first issues I’d read in a while—a twist on purgatory guest-starring Ernest Hemingway and some mysterious figures. But this one? Whole different ballgame. Hemingway’s still around for comic relief, but there are also tentacle monsters and a horrifying dreamscape full of teeth and blood and misery. People are jumping off bridges for eternity, and there is a not-so-subtle indication that “God” is a giant pile of mouthy flesh. In short, this is one weird book, and that makes it a must-read. I honestly can’t wait to find out what happens next, as cliché as that phrase is. I hope it involves more monsters and Hemingway with a shotgun, because what else do you really need in life? 9/10

It’s a science fiction Golden Age in comic books right now, and one of the most unique titles has certainly been Charles Soule and Alberto Jiménez Albuquerque’s Letter 44. Like last year’s fantastic indie film Europa Report, Letter 44 is tied closely enough to the real world—and real science—that it’s not difficult to imagine it happening as a result of politics and experimental space exploration. And it seems that the SyFy channel, while certainly a fan of schlocky monster movies, can also appreciate the gravity of finding new life in space, as publisher Oni Press has recently announced the channel’s upcoming adaptation of Letter 44 for television.
Here’s the press release, including a short plot summary:
Portland, Or (April 30, 2014) – Oni Press is thrilled to announce that Charles Soule and Alberto Jiménez Alburquerque’s hit ongoing series Letter 44 has been picked up for development for television by SyFy!

DC Comics takes us to an alternate universe with Earth 2 Volume 2: The Tower of Fate. In this other reality we can experience our favorite super heroes embarking on fun adventures that don't affect the regular goings-ons of the New 52 world. Basically, it's a world where writers can do anything they want to whoever they want and get away with it because it's not happening in real canon.
Earth 2 Volume 2: The Tower of Fate collects issues 0 and 7 through 12 of the monthly title, as well as DC Universe Presents issue 0. Earth 2's super heroes are being rounded up by the World Army. Dr. Fate and Kid Flash have retreated into the mystical realm of Nabu. The mysterious protector of Nabu, known as Wotan, needs the assistance of Dr. Fate in entering a tower and finding the secret locked inside its walls. The question is, "For what purpose...

The appeal of the Invaders has always been their roots in World War II, their connection to the Golden Age of comics and a simpler time. The world was in real danger from villains doing more horrendous things than any comic book bad guy. After the Axis Powers, taking on other comic book villains can seem silly. These roots in the past can make the team feel like they don’t belong in the present, and justifying their reunion often saps Invaders’ stories of urgency. All New Invaders #1 does a good job of connecting their past, and hints at exploring interesting themes for these classic heroes, even if this first issue doesn’t manage to hook readers.

There’s so much to get excited about at Image these days. Creators from every corner of the mainstream comic book world are traipsing over to Image for their very own creator-owned tales, and it’s made for an Image Expo event of truly epic proportions. Here’s what we were able to discern from the inundation of yesterday’s news…
There Will Actually Be A Comic Book Called Bitch Planet.
Kelly Sue DeConnick is rocking it at Marvel with Captain Marvel and Avengers Assemble as well as at Image with Pretty Deadly, but apparently that’s not enough for her, as she took to the stage to announce a collaboration with Valentine De Landro about female prisoners in space kicking ass and taking names. In comics news this week, Matt Fraction, one of Marvel’s brightest stars and writer of the award-winning Hawkeye, has been replaced by Charles Soule as the writer of the upcoming new Marvel series, Inhuman, though Joe Madureira remains the series artist. No reasons were given for the switch nor for pushing back the release date from January to April. Inhuman spins off of the Marvel Event Infinity where thousands of new Inhumans appeared after Black Bolt exploded a Terrigen Bomb, with the series looking at the changed lives of the newly transformed Inhumans. Soule is a prolific comics writer, currently helming Superman/Wonder Woman, Swamp Thing and Red Lanterns for DC, Letter 44 for Oni, and Thunderbolts for Marvel along with the new She-Hulk series set to debut in February.
DC are going to end two of their original New 52 line-up titles, Animal Man and The Dark Knight, early next year.

Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye # 24
Written by James Roberts and John Barber
Art by Atilio Rojo, James Riaz, Nick Roche, Livid Ramondelli and Robert Gill
Published by Idw Comics
The review for last month’s issue of “Transformers: More than Meets the Eye”, the second part in the twelve-issue “Dark Cybertron” storyline that crosses over both ongoing Transformers titles, began with a pithy, if strained, analogy comparing the experience of reading the issue to being caught between two conversations of vastly different degrees of entertainment. While it would be possible to cook up a similar analogy to describe this latest issue, possibly something involving being forced to alternate between a well-crafted club sandwich and a stale Pb&J but with no J, but it would be far easier to simply say that everything glaringly wrong and unsatisfying that was present last time around is still there.

In October’s last weekend, Beyond Fest was taken over by Clive Barker. Making just his 8th trip out of his house in the past two years, the wildly popular and influential horror author and artist arrived in Hollywood to screen his Nightbreed, given the subtitle The Cabal Cut to distinguish itself from the castrated version that found itself in theaters in 1990.
After an arduous search led by producer Mark Miller, long-lost footage from Clive Barker’s original shoots was found, and has been compiled into this two hour and 20 minute “kitchen sink” version that throws every snippet of film into the cut. The result is a long film, with at least 45 minutes of never-before-seen footage, all of which is “VHS quality” (the worst fate any movie could ever have). It’s disjointed and discordant to jump from normal quality to the dark, crackling, and fuzzy “new” footage. It adds another level to the experience,...

Marvel has announced that writer James Robinson and artist Steve Pugh will soon be joining forces for “All-New Invaders,” a brand new series that will kick off the Second Phase of the publisher’s highly successful Marvel Now! initiative that began last year.
Due to arrive on store shelves in January, the upcoming series will headline Captain America and his fellow World War II allies Sub-Mariner, the original Human Torch and Winter Soldier as the first issue sets them up trying to prevent the alien Kree Empire from rediscovering a device that can both control gods and create new super-beings.
“All-New Invaders” will work directly with Matt Fraction and Joe Madiurera’s “Inhuman,” which will also debut in January and deal with the consequences of new super-powered beings appearing around the globe up which forces the once-secret society of Inhumans (and product of the Kree) out into the world.

The "All-New Marvel Now!" actually begins Dec. 24 with Avengers #24.Now and the campaign will continue through April with story arcs in ongoing series before the launch of some brand new titles, including All-New Invaders and Inhuman, in January. Here's what writer James Robinson had to say about the reformed team. "They answered America's call, went to war against the Nazi menace and fought side by side. These guys were brothers-in-arms. As they move into more modern dramas, that link is a link you just can't undo. That will hopefully be the visceral element of this books' identity that will set it apart from the Avengers and X-Men." In a controversial move, DC decided to forego publishing its regular line of books and put out 52 one-shot stories featuring some of its best villains. The one-shots range from extremely popular (Joker, Lex Luthor, Brainiac) to the newer and more obscure (Relic, Shadow Thief). They feature some veteran creators and some who have barely drawn a comic. Each “Villains Month” book will get a decimal point after a regular DC Comic. For example, Joker will feature in Batman 23.1, Riddler will feature in Batman 23.2 etc. The first issue of the new DC event Forever Evil will come out the same month as the villain one-shots. It is a direct follow up to “Trinity War” and will be written by Geoff Johns and drawn by David Finch. There are quite a few “Villains Month” books, but the following comics either have great creative teams, continue a compelling storylines, or are simply intriguing.

Kevin Costner is on the verge of winning the right to pursue a legal case against Morgan Creek, the production company behind Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
Costner starred as the titular character in the 1991 film, based on the legend of the British outlaw.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a judge has issued a tentative ruling suggesting that the actor will be given permission to proceed with a fraud claim against Morgan Creek, which Costner's lawyers claim hid money from him by assigning foreign distribution rights to a company owned by Morgan Creek CEO James Robinson.

Justice League #22 came out today, touching the fuse for DC’s summer event, Trinity War, which we already know leads into the fall event, Forever Evil.
(Obviously, there’s your mandatory Spoiler Alert!)
In all fairness, it’s a heck of a setup issue – the battle lines are drawn, it is made abundantly clear the stakes are high, and there are wheels within wheels of which few of the players are aware. It’s a book that absolutely brings you back next week to see what will happen. Geoff Johns is a master of this – he weaves a long-form plot into his books that all ties up into bows whenever he chooses to pull the plot threads. I don’t think he’s ever written a book that didn’t delight me in all his years at DC.
Add to that his wonderful ability to pull obscure characters and plot...
