Morrissey has posted a scathing essay on his website, condemning the posthumous praise and crocodile tears that followed Sinéad O’Connor’s death on Wednesday.
The outspoken singer claimed that O’Connor never received the support she needed while living, and “she was dropped by her label after selling 7 million albums for them.”
He added, “There is a certain music industy hatred for singers who don’t ‘fit in,” he wrote, “and they are never praised until death — when, finally, they can’t answer back.”
Morrissey’s comments were made in a post titled “You Know I Couldn’t Last” taken from the title of one of his songs. The lyrics refer to giving up on the music industry, noting, “CD’s and T-shirts, promos and God knows, You know I couldn’t last, Someone please take me home.”

The cause of singer Sinéad O’Connor’s death has not been disclosed, but London’s Metropolitan police say the death is not being treated as “suspicious.”
In a statement released to press today, police said officers were called Wednesday to a residential address in the Herne Hill area of south London at 11:18 a.m. Wednesday on a report of an “unresponsive woman.”
“Officers attended,” the statement continued. “A 56-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin have been notified. The death is not being treated as suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

There’s a self-defeating argument I’ve often heard used to explain the state of gun violence in this country. It goes something like this: If we couldn’t change things after 20 first-graders were murdered at Sandy Hook, what hope is there now?
I understand the impulse to give in to cynicism and despair. I also don’t think it serves anyone to ignore the facts. It’s true that gun violence has reached epidemic proportions. In 2021, nearly 50,000 Americans died from gun violence, and tens of thousands more were injured...

In the second-most-overblown scene from HBO’s oppressively/gloriously overblown dramedy The Newsroom, Will McAvoy refuses — because he’s a time-traveler from the future with 20/20 hindsight on all things — to go along with the prevailing media narrative in the aftermath of the 2011 shooting of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. He boldly declares, “A doctor pronounces her dead, not the news!”
That’s the way I feel about everybody associated with Ted Lasso hinting at the idea that the show’s upcoming third season will also be its last. Sure, star and co-creator Jason Sudeikis may be telling everybody that they’ve finished the story they set out to tell, but the soccer comedy feels too valuable for Apple TV+ to surrender without a fight, or at least promotional hype. Until the first ad arrives calling this “the third and final season,” I assume that backroom negotiations are ongoing.

Few documentaries have ever featured as inspiring a subject as Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down, through which the Oscar-nominated directors of 2018’s Rbg, Julie Cohen and Betsy West, profile the eponymous former U.S. congresswoman who was shot in the head while meeting with Tucson constituents in 2011 — and who has since fought her way back from the brink of death to become a leading advocate for gun safety measures.
Giffords, Cohen and West traveled to the Scad Savannah Film Festival in October to screen their Oscar-eligible doc feature and then discuss it in front of a packed Lucas Theatre audience with The Hollywood Reporter. You can watch video of that conversation, which closes with a deeply moving sing-a-long that illustrates just how much progress Giffords has made in her recovery, at the top of this post.

Gabby Giffords, the former U.S. congresswoman from Arizona, shared inspirational words on pushing for change and moving forward in “challenging times” on Wednesday at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment breakfast gala, presented by Lifetime.
Former Hollywood executive and icon Sherry Lansing introduced Giffords, who received a standing ovation as she approached the stage. Lansing called Giffords an “extraordinary woman” as her mentor.
“This woman has shown me that whatever age we are, we can literally find someone to mentor us and inspire us to higher levels of awareness and action,” said Lansing, who was the first female head of a studio when she was named president of 20th Century Fox in 1980. The executive later ran Paramount for 12 years before stepping down to create a nonprofit foundation.
Giffords was the third woman in Arizona’s history to be elected to the U.

It’s been a headline-making weekend at the Kelly-Giffords household in Tucson, Arizona.
The couple celebrated the news Friday that Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly had been re-elected to his first full term representing Arizona, winning a tight contest with Republican Blake Masters. Mark Kelly has been elected to a full six-year term in the U.S. Senate for the state of Arizona. The incumbent’s close victory puts the Democrats one vital step closer to continuing to control the upper chamber.
Three days after the midterm elections, CNN, Nnc and others declared the former astronaut, who was elected to the Senate in a special 2020 election, was on a solid trajectory to beat Republican challenger Blake Masters in the former home of John McCain. The race for Arizona governor is still too close to call, but Democrat Adrian Fontes has now been declared the winner for the state’s pivotal Secretary of State position over self-described Oath Keeper Mark Finchem.

Vladimir Putin may prefer that people forget about imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, but the Cinema Eye Honors isn’t.
The awards show dedicated to the art and craft of documentary film today announced its 2023 Unforgettables list of the most memorable subjects of nonfiction films this year, and Navalny’s name was front and center. The story of the lawyer and anti-corruption crusader, who was almost killed in a Kremlin poisoning plot in 2020, is told in the award-winning film Navalny, directed by Daniel Roher.
Joining Navalny on the Unforgettables list is another political leader — Gabby Giffords, the former Congresswoman from Arizona who was severely injured in an assassination attempt in 2011. Her difficult road to recovery and return to activism is told in Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down, directed by Betsy West and Julie Cohen.

Amber Heard is replacing most of her legal team and leaning into the Constitution as she prepares to appeal a multi-million defamation verdict awarded to Johnny Depp.
Not entirely unexpected, the move by the Aquaman actress to cut loose her main attorney Elaine Bredehoft follows weeks of judicial jockeying by both of the Rum Diary co-stars to have another kick at the courtroom can with notices of intended appeals. Having seen ex-husband Depp awarded 10.4 million by a Virginia jury on June 1 after an often acerbic and explicit six-week trial, Heard has now hired David L. Axelrod and Jay Ward Brown to represent her attempt to rescind the judgment. Ben Rottenborn of Virginia-based Woods Rogers Vandeventer Black will remain as a co-counsel.

Former U.S. Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband Senator Mark Kelly in the documentary Gabby Giffords Won’T Back Down. Courtesy of Briarcliff Entertainment.
Gabby Giffords Won’T Back Down is an uplifting, inspiring documentary about a woman who truly knows what it means to overcome: former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle “Gabby” Giffords, who was shot in the head by a would-be assassin. Although few even survive such as injury, Giffords not only did survive but made a remarkable recovery, regaining an ability to speak and walk, although she remains partly impaired in both. Much of the credit for her amazing recovery has to go to her own indomitable, optimistic personality – and a remarkable sense of humor – but it is also due to the unwavering support of her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, now an Arizona senator.

Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris, a kind Cinderella story for older women with a Dior twist, arrives in 978 theaters this weekend with strong reviews and great word of mouth. The film is a known property among that demo given its prime trailer treatment before Focus Features’ fan favorite Downtown Abbey: A New Era — not a bad setup.
Deadline review here. The film by Anthony Fabian with Lesley Manville, Isabelle Huppert and Jason Isaacs has a 92/critics, 94/audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It shares the pond with a handful of strong studio holdovers and new wide releases Paw Patrol: The Movie and drama Where The Crawdads Sing. Like Crawdads, Mrs. Harris is based on a popular book – the 1958 novel by Paul Gallico – and book clubs are prominent in a large marketing push.
Manville plays Ada Harris, a British housekeeper and widow who dreams of buying her own couture Christian Dior gown.

If you find yourself sobbing through the first half of the new documentary “Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down,” no one could possibly blame you.
Maybe you’ll break at the part where you hear about Giffords’ mother moving to Texas so she could be with her in the hospital every day. Maybe video footage of her early speech-therapy sessions, where she struggles to say her own name, will get you. Perhaps her return to House of Representatives, where she was met with a standing ovation, will put you over the edge.
Whatever your undoing, it’s impossible to withstand much of this powerful film, directed by Julie Cohen and Betsy West, without being overwhelmed.
The documentary opens on a series of white roses in front of the National Mall, each placed to represent an American felled by gun violence. Archival footage in the opening credits then treats us to...

“Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down,” an inspirational story about the former Arizona congresswoman’s fight to recover from an assassination attempt in 2011 and lobby for greater gun safety laws, arrives in theaters July 15 amid a troubling surge in mass shootings across the country, underscoring the scope of her challenge.
But Giffords, who struggles to speak due to injuries she incurred in that attack, remains undaunted, even in the wake of the July 4 mass shootings in Illinois and the June 23 Supreme Court decision overturning concealed-carry gun restrictions in New York.
“For me, it has been really important to move ahead and to not look back,” says the former legislator, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom on July 7.
“This country experiences more mass shootings than any other industrialized nation,” Giffords later writes via email. “The only defense the gun lobby has to high-profile shootings is to argue that gun laws don’t matter,...

John Oliver checked in on the midterm elections Sunday night, focusing on the Arizona senate race and having a ball tearing through some of the odd Republican campaign ads and strategies.
Arizona is represented by two Democrats: Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly. According to Oliver, Republicans think they can unseat Kelly, but it’s a competitive GOP primary.
First, there’s Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, whose “whole vibe” is on display as he shows off his nunchuck skills in a pair of videos celebrating the end of the state’s ban on the exotic weapons. The first video was apparently so popular that people demanded more, so in the sequel, Brnovich simply says, “You want more chucks? You got more chucks.”

A bipartisan group of senators have reach an agreement on a framework for a series of new gun safety measures on Sunday, but they fall short of banning the purchase of assault weapons for those under 21.
Specifically, the agreement would expand background checks for those under 21 who purchase guns; grants for states to implement “red flag” laws, which allows law enforcement to temporarily take away guns who pose a danger to themselves or others; an expansion of mental health programs; improving the background check system overall, with a focus on preventing domestic abusers from buying guns; and increasing funding for school security. It also includes the first federal law against gun trafficking and straw purchasing.
Such an announcement would reflect a breakthrough in a long stalemate over any new gun legislation, even though it does not include measures that have widespread public support, like universal background checks, a ban on...

Julie Cohen and Betsy West knew they had to make their movie “Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down” about former U.S. congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords when, in their first video call with her, they saw that she and her husband, Sen. Mark Kelly, had kept a piece of her skull in a tupperware in their freezer. Right next to the empanadas.
“They showed that to us early on and we immediately were like, that’s a scene in our film,” Cohen told TheWrap, even though in the moment, their documentary didn’t yet exist. “We were just dazzled really by Gabby in particular from that very first wonderful meeting.”
“From the very moment we met Gabby, it was obvious she would make an incredible subject for a documentary,” West added.
Giffords was a rising star in the Democratic Party when in 2011 she was shot in the head during a mass shooting in Arizona.

The first bill, called The Bipartisan Background Checks Act (H.R. 8) would require universal background checks on all commercial gun sales. It passed by a 227-203 vote and had Republican support and co-sponsors.
The other bill would close the “Charleston loophole” by extending the time allotted for background checks. The loophole allowed Dylann Roof to...

Sarah Palin’s defamation suit against the New York Times can move forward, a federal judge said on Friday.
US District Court Judge Jed Rakoff rejected the Times bid to dismiss the suit, which arose over a 2017 editorial Palin claims wrongly linked her to the 2011 mass shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Palin was a 2008 Vice Presidential candidate and is a former Governor of Alaska.
Rakoff today said there was “sufficient evidence to allow a rational finder of fact to find actual malice by clear and convincing evidence.” While Rakoff allowed that much of Palin’s case was circumstantial, it was strong enough that a jury might find the Times and its former editorial page editor James Bennet acted with “actual malice by clear and convincing evidence.”
Rakoff scheduled a Feb. 1, 2021 trial. Read the court documents here.

Kamala Harris will deliver the most important speech, so far, in her career, at tonight’s Democratic National Convention, as she accepts the nomination for vice president.
Pundits and analysts will pay particular attention to her ability to communicate effectively to a virtual audience, which more likely than not will be the way things will be as political season enters its final stretch in the fall campaign. She will be speaking at the Chase Center in Wilmington, De, restricted to a network pool.
A lot of people in Hollywood are watching: Harris has long cultivated ties to the entertainment business, centered in her home state, and her best friend is Chrisette Hudlin, a PR consultant married to director-writer Reginald Hudlin. It was Chrisette Hudlin who set up Harris on a blind date with entertainment lawyer Doug Emhoff, now her husband.

Hillary Clinton, Paul Ryan, President Donald Trump and more prominent politicians are speaking out after a gunman killed at least 58 people and injured 515 others at a Las Vegas music festival on Sunday night, in the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
Ryan, Trump and others made public statements of sympathy for the victims while calling for national solidarity and support for the Vegas community.
But Clinton, along with former Vice President Joe Biden and former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, described the mass gun violence as the latest example in an ongoing pattern in America and they urged political action in response.
