Iris Prize winner Black Hat
"It shone a light on an often unseen community in a sensitive, tender and positive way, without casting judgement," said International Jury Chair Jake Graf as Black Hat was awarded this year's Iris Prize for best international Lgbt short film. Directed by Sarah Smith - the fourth woman to win the prestigious award - it tells the story of a closeted Hasidic Jewish man living in Los Angeles. "We found the lead charming and likeable, the film visually stunning," added Graf.
Also shortlisted for the award were Marguerite, in which an elderly woman comes out to her carer, and Ponyboi, in which an intersex laundry worker dreams of a better life.
Alfie Dale's magical realist drama My Brother Is A Mermaid won the Best British Short, Audience and Youth Awards.

IMDb has responded to complaints from within the transgender film community about the site’s decision to publish the birth names of marquis transgender talent without their consent.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, representatives for two trans actors with major television credits told IndieWire that they have not been able to remove this information from IMDb, even after extensive lobbying from management, representatives at one of the top three Hollywood agencies, and GLAAD, the leading Lgbtq media advocacy organization.
“IMDb is committed to being the most comprehensive source of movie, TV and celebrity information. Our users trust that when they use IMDb, they are receiving comprehensive and accurate biographical information,” a representative from IMDb told IndieWire in an official statement (full statement below). “IMDb strives to represent an individual’s gender identity while also accurately reflecting cast and crew listings as they appear in a production’s on-screen credits at the time of original release.

Daniel Craig is taking on the role of James Bond one final time in Cary Fukunaga’s upcoming Bond 25, but the future of the character remains uncertain. While fans are clamoring for British favorites Tom Hardy or Idris Elba to take over the iconic spy, actor Dominic West has a more groundbreaking idea: “Maybe a transgender Bond would be cool.”
West proposed the idea for a transgender actor taking on the Bond character during an interview with The Sunday Times (via Digital Spy) promoting his role in the BBC’s new “Les Miersables” adaptation. The actor said his involvement with the indie film “Colette” helped inspire the idea. “Colette” starred West opposite Keira Knightley and Jake Graf, a transgender actor who played a cis male character in the movie, a casting decision praised by IndieWire’s own Jude Dry.

When Rebecca Root auditioned for “The Sisters Brothers,” all she knew from the casting breakdown was it called for a “strong woman” with “some facial hair on her upper lip.” For her self-tape, Root’s partner drew in the hint of a mustache with eyebrow pencil, and she “made sure that [her] voice was strong.” After one callback, Root impressed French filmmaker Jacques Audiard (“A Prophet”) and booked the role.
For his part in “Colette,” Jake Graf was contacted via Facebook by director Wash Westmoreland, who said he was made aware of Graf’s work through friends. “Colette” and “The Sisters Brothers” opened the same week, leading the specialty box office. What makes Graf and Root special is that while both are trans, the characters they play in these two films are not.
Hollywood has a terrible track record with giving trans roles to non-trans (cisgender) actors. “Colette” and “The Sisters Brothers...

Keira Knightley stars as French novelist Colette in director Wash Westmoreland’s gorgeous and gripping period biopic Colette. What a marvelous film!
In late 19th- early20th century Paris, Colette broke barriers of all sorts for women. Although the story is set in Paris more than a century ago, this tale of a woman’s awakening to her own worth, her struggle to be free and be herself, and to be recognized for her own work is as thrilling as ever, and surprisingly timely.
Although the film is about a French writer, Westmoreland’s film is mostly in English. The film is a take on Colette as a feminist icon. Those who might quibble that Colette was not a feminist as much as just a woman...

Chicago – June is Pride Month, a celebration of Lgbtq liberation, and all other forms of orientation and gender liberation. What began as a gay and trans rights flashpoint on a June night in 1969, during the push back riots at the Stonewall Inn in New York City, has become a month-long commemoration of the evolution in identity rights and freedoms. An event in Chicago associated with Pride Month is the annual “Queer Bits Film Festival” – a short film program at the Pride Arts Center on North Broadway on June 17th, 2017 at 7:30pm – that showcases the best of Queer cinema from around the world. The festival producers are Shaun Baer and Dan Pal.
