There are a plethora of reasons why the recently released X-Men ‘97 proved to be the kind of stellar success that it quickly became. The animation style, the continuation of the narrative, the quality of it itself, and the way in which it remained true to its roots were bound to impress viewers worldwide.
However, another reason it proved such a stellar watch was down to the kind of tragedies that graced our screen. Fans who have already watched the 10-episode-strong Season 1 will know exactly what we are talking about, especially with respect to Episode 5, Remember It, which we shall surely remember for a long time to come.

X-Men... 2000?
Although the recent Disney+ show served as a revival of an animated series that aired 25 years ago, the decision was made to keep the action rooted firmly in the original era. But with season 2 already confirmed and reports that Marvel Studios fully intends to keep the show going for as long as possible, could the mutant heroes make the jump into the noughties?
During an interview with Discussing Film, supervising director Jake Castorena was asked if they intend to hold on to the '90s aesthetic, and if he anticipates the show taking influence from later comic book runs for the second season.
"We touched on that, even in season one with E is for Extinction, which was definitely not of the ’90s run per se but in the zeitgeist of the era that came a little later," he replied. "Once so much time passes, that’s pretty much...

X-Men ’97 is certainly very close to the original 1992 series. The art style, graphics, animations, voices, and even story have followed the same path, starting off right where the first series ended in 1997. While hardcore fans would agree that the show feels exactly the same, some aspects of it were changed to better appeal to today’s audience.

From characters swearing to a visible increase in the brutality of the violence, some aspects have evolved for the better. The changes seem easy to miss; however, the behind-the-scenes process of getting them into the show had to have been very difficult, especially because of how strict Disney is when it comes to such themes.
However, the director of the series recently revealed how they made their way around this.

Marvel fans seem to be in for something truly great considering how, after X-Men: The Animated Series recently got its blockbuster sequel series, it seems now is the turn for the Spider-Man animated series to get its succeeding show. However, that is yet to be officially greenlit, with only cameos supporting fans’ hope of getting a subsequent series.

Nonetheless, with the ex-showrunner of the latest fan-favorite sequel series to The Animated Series (i.e. Beau DeMayo) confirming just which Spidey it was who made a cameo in X-Men ’97, the stakes are high and fans’ heartiest expectations could be met. In the case of that happening, the sequel web-slinger series needs to follow ’97‘s golden rule for animated revivals.

Despite being fired as X-Men '97 showrunner (the details are still sketchy) shortly before the series premiered on Disney+, Beau DeMayo has remained active on social media, sharing intriguing insights into the development of the animated revival show and revealing some of his key influences.
DeMayo has previously explained how the iconic "Superman takes flight" sequence from Zack Snyder's Man of Steel inspired a similar moment from episode 6 featuring Storm regaining her powers, and has now revealed that a different scene may have "subconsciously influenced" Rogue attacking the villainous Bastion in the recent season finale.
This was yet another standout moment for Rogue, who unleashed the full extent of her power while channelling the pain and rage she felt after losing Gambit in the Genosha massacre
I was likely subconsciously influenced by this when writing the #xmen97 finale beat of Rogue punching Bastion. That’s not Superman hammering Zod.

The X-Men '97 finale featured some huge Marvel Universe cameos, including Black Panther. However, we'd later discover that T'Chaka was beneath the mask, not T'Challa.
The decision has perplexed viewers, particularly when T'Challa's father is typically portrayed as the former Black Panther who fought alongside Captain America in World War II. T'Challa being sidelined has spawned many fan theories, with most convinced the decision must be related to Chadwick Boseman's death.
Following the actor's tragic passing, Marvel Studios chose not to recast his Black Panther. Instead, the hero died off-screen in the MCU, and 2022's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ended with the reveal that he has a son, also called T'Challa.
In an interview with Phase Zero (via Toonado.com), X-Men '97 supervising director Jake Castorena was asked if there was a reason T'Chaka was depicted as Black Panther after the short-lived Fantastic Four: The Animated Series featured the...

X-Men ’97 just finished its first season, one of the best things the MCU has ever released. Yet, way back in 1992, Fox Kids almost killed its predecessor before it had a chance to evolve.
In the new documentary special Assembled: X-Men ’97, three of the chief creatives on X-Men: The Animated Series reveal their struggles getting the show off the ground. Producer and director Larry Houston recalls working under Marvel Productions president Margaret Loesch, who always championed the X-Men throughout the ’80s, resulting in misfires like Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends or Pryde of the X-Men but no ongoing series. When Loesch took a role as head of Fox Children’s Network, she brought Houston with her and gave him his shot, with one caveat.
“The folks above her didn’t believe X-Men was gonna do anything,” says writer Julia Lewald, who, along with her husband Eric, worked as a writer on the original show.

X-Men '97 was a big hit with critics right from the start, but the Disney+ revival series has now become the highest-rated Marvel Studios project - live-action or animated, big or small screen - in the 16-year history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This takes it past Marvel's previous top-rated Disney+ show, Ms. Marvel (98%), and movie, Black Panther (96%), to become the most positively-reviewed MCU project of all time on the popular aggregator site.

While it would have been easy for the revival of "X-Men: The Animated Series" to coast by on cool nostalgia, showrunner Beau De Mayo (who was fired before the show's premiere) and supervising producer and head director Jake Castorena ensured that "X-Men '97" brought meaningful and emotional stories to life week in and week out, alongside the magnificent and modern mutant mayhem that zips through signature comic book storylines.
Similarly, Hasbro's Marvel Legends line of action figures have delivered an assembly of collectibles that take the classic feel of the animated X-Men and give them outstanding modern action figures. After an excellent first wave of figures, albeit one that could have used more accessories,...

Fans are truly excited about the MCU’s efforts to bring back the X-Men, anticipating an epic journey ahead. It is now no secret that Marvel Studios has been diligently searching for the right writer to spearhead the X-Men movie script, with recent reports confirming that they’ve narrowed it down to two final candidates.

However, fans find it somewhat peculiar that despite the recent surge in popularity of the X-Men ’97 animated series, Kevin Feige is not considering hiring that team for the movie, and they are not shy to vocalize their concerns, to say the least.

After an exciting, often shocking run of episodes, the season 1 finale of X-Men '97 hits Disney+ next Wednesday, and (former) showrunner Beau DeMayo has shared some "homework" for fans who might want a cryptic hint about what to expect from "Tolerance is Extinction - Part 3."
Spoilers for last week's episode and (potentially) Wednesday's instalment follow.
DeMayo posted an image from Star Trek: The Next Generation season 5, episode 18, "Cause and Effect." This episode of the beloved sci-fi series saw the crew of the Enterprise caught in a time-loop, with the ship being destroyed over and over again, and Picard, Riker, Data and co. having to figure out how to reset the anomaly.
Does this suggest that the X-Men will find themselves in a similar situation? "Tolerance is Extinction - Part 2" certainly left the team in dire straits, with Jean Grey killed(?) by a Mr. Sinister-controlled Cable, and Wolverine's Adamantium...

There's only two more episodes of X-Men '97 to go, and Marvel Studios has released a clip from tomorrow's penultimate season 1 chapter, "Tolerance is Extinction - Part 2."
The preview finds our mutant heroes suiting-up in new costumes for their impending battle with Bastion and his forces.
The outfits are a mixture of the team's classic looks, and the costumes they wore in the pages of The Uncanny X-Men. The clip also sees Jubilee burn Roberto DaCosta's business card, so Sunspot must have decided not to join the fight.
Former showrunner Beau DeMayo hinted at the costume change when he shared the unused pilot for Pryde of the X-Men earlier today.
DeMayo was also asked if he's ever heard any talk of adding Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat to the X-Men '97 roster.
"I haven’t, but my suspicion is Jubilee and Kitty slightly compete in terms of their age and Pov on the team.

Former X-Men '97 showrunner Beau DeMayo has taken to social media to share a "homework assignment" for fans that may want a better idea of what to expect from the middle chapter in the three-part season finale, which airs on Disney+ next Wednesday.
DeMayo posted the cover to 1993's Uncanny X-Men #304, which marked the 30th anniversary celebration of the iconic mutant heroes, and the third chapter in the "Fatal Attractions" storyline.
Spoilers for Tolerance is Extinction - Part 1 and (possibly) Part 2 follow.
Though a few significant events occur in this issue that could inform the episode, we'd say it will most likely draw influence from Magneto's arc. Towards the end of Tolerance is Extinction - Part 1, Dr. Valerie Cooper frees Magnus from Bastion's prison, and the Master of Magnetism flies to one of the northern magnetic pole to manipulate Earth's magnetic field, using his powers to wipe...

X-Men ’97 has been constantly delivering and exhilarating fans with its intriguing storyline, nostalgic aesthetics, and captivating action. A continuation of the original X-Men: The Animated Series, the animated show, has been widely dubbed by fans and critics as the best Marvel show to be made.
X-Men ’97
While it has been receiving extreme praise, the show delivered a heavy blow when it killed off two of the most beloved characters: Gambit and Magneto. The original voice actor for Gambit, Chris Potter, remarked that while he is angry about Gambit’s death, he revealed that only Cable can bring him back now.

When Disney finally acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019, fans were either totally excited or, conversely, anxious about how the Mouse would handle the Marvel characters. Of course, this was the peak of the MCU with the release of Avengers: Endgame, and so Marvel Studios had its own concerns about the future trajectory of their properties. But since the deal included the acquisition of characters incredibly important to the franchise, from X-Men and the Fantastic Four to Deadpool and Galactus, it was only a matter of time.
Disney took its time, and now, five years later, things are starting to take off: a new Deadpool movie is coming soon, featuring Wolverine working with the title character, a new Fantastic Four is in development, and right now, X-Men '97 is making a lot of noise as a sequel to the X-Men animated series that ran on Fox Kids from 1992 to 1997.

Marvel has decided to tease its fan base with the revival of a nostalgic show titled, X-Men ’97. The original show ran for five seasons, from 1982 to 1997, and it has become a massive hit among the original fans of the mutant franchise. The rebooted series continues from where the previous show had ended 27 years ago.

Needless to say, the show managed to grab the attention of the fans from the very first episode of the show. Thanks to the show’s self-containing creative narrative, and Beau DeMayo’s creative genius, that has brought the show to life. This article contains spoilers for "X-Men '97."
I'm the precise age to have been introduced to the Marvel Universe by animation and film. Back then in the bygone 2000s, superhero movies never crossed over and the best that us wee fans could hope for was, say, the X-Men playing guest star on "Spider-Man" for an episode or two. I've now evolved into a curmudgeon who thinks superhero cinema could use more individuality and less interconnectivity, but I digress.
All this is to say that "X-Men '97" episode 7, "Bright Eyes," featured the sort of brief guest appearance that would've made 10-year-old me super-excited: Rogue meets Captain America (Josh Keaton). You might recall that Cap appeared back in the original "X-Men" cartoon; the season 5 episode, "Old Soldiers," showed him and Wolverine on a mission together in World War II. We've known for two weeks that Cap would be showing up (thanks to...

X-Men ‘97 continues its narrative momentum from the emotional sixth episode into its seventh episode. Following the demise of Gambit, the episode primarily focuses on Rogue’s quest to seek justice for her former teammate and love interest’s demise. In the process, viewers get to witness some exciting cameos from fan-favorite MCU characters.

While the cameos do not significantly affect the overall plot of the episode they still serve as a nice nod to the larger universe the X-Men inhibit. Such cameos were also a trademark of the original 90s animated series and the earlier entries in Kevin Feige’s MCU, which later expanded into a grand shared universe. Here is what you need to know about X-Men ‘97 episode 7’s cameos and how they use a trick from Feige’s early MCU playbook.

Marvel Studios Animation has hit the jackpot with its new series X-Men ’97. The series has got the fandom deep in discussion about the X-Men characters and the themes that made the mutants popular. While the Animation department’s What If…? is considered MCU canon, the same cannot be said for X-Men ’97. While the showrunner Beau DeMayo definitively claimed that the animated series is a standalone entity, Marvel Studios was not so sure.
X-Men ’97 may not be MCU canon, but it was surely not an easy decision to make
Kevin Feige reportedly went back and forth a lot about making the animated series canon to the MCU. However, it appears that the show chose to stay on its own path for now, following in the footsteps of its predecessor X-Men: The Animated Series.

‘X-Men ’97’ was a huge hit for the studio. The show debuted with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and both fans and critics agreed that it’s a faithful adaptation of the original ‘X-Men: The Animated Series’ from the ’90s. Spoilers ahead for episode 5 of X-Men ’97.
After decades’ worth of patience, X-Men ’97 delivers upon a promise of good television with a near-perfect adaptation of Marvel’s mutant superheroes. The series, which recently took the entire world by storm, represents the hope carried by fans since the original show’s run in the 90s. Although nothing ever quite became as iconic as that period’s cartoon when it comes to Marvel animation, X-Men ’97 comes pretty close.

But one factor which could have made the series uber-popular ends up being a misdirection, and even though the plot twist manages to shock the audience and leave them with questions, the show’s director does a good job too of crushing those dreams and expectations in one swift blow.

Almost immediately after its release, Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys became the talk of the town with its dark and satirical take on the superhero universe. The series does not shy away from using violence and gore to its benefit but watching such horrifying scenes unfold right in front of our eyes episode after episode has certainly made the audience a little indifferent to it all.
Prime Video’s The Boys
The series is still one hell of a watch, don’t get us wrong. However, it looks like it has some competition in town with X-Men ’97. Just five episodes in, the animated series has managed to excite, shock, and basically traumatize the audience. We’re midway through ‘X-Men ’97’ now, and fans are buzzing with excitement, calling it Marvel Studios’ best in a while. Episode 5 really hit home, stirring up some wild reactions. Genosha gets hit, and Magneto and Gambit make a heroic sacrifice to fend off the Sentinels and take down Mister Mold.
Meanwhile, Cyclops and Jean’s relationship hits a rough patch as secrets unravel—Cyclops’ telepathic chats with Madelyne come to light, while Jean feels a pull towards Wolverine. Just a taste of the drama from this week’s episode!
After Genosha was destroyed, people online had all sorts of ideas about who might be responsible, from Mystique to Mr. Sinister. One theory caught attention: Cassandra Nova, a villain set to appear in the upcoming ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ movie. In the comics, Cassandra Nova’s tied to a mutant genocide, so linking her to ‘X-Men ’97’ and ‘Deadpool 3’ wouldn’t be too out there.

Reviving the classic X-Men animated series takes guts. In a list of beloved shows from a bygone era of Saturday Morning television, Marvel’s X-Men stands among select others at the top of Mount Nostalgia, with adamantium claws popped and a dream of equality for mutantkind in its heart. When Marvel announced a return to the fan-favorite animation, it was difficult to imagine the Herculean task of doing justice to the old series while carving a new path. Thankfully, Marvel’s X-Men ’97 launched to rave reviews from critics and fans, and we’ve got the show’s Supervising Producer and Supervising Director, Jake Castorena, to tell us about establishing a new era in mutant-related entertainment.

This article contains spoilers regarding the first two episodes of X-Men ‘97.
Both children of Generation X and Children of the Atom have rejoiced with the early success of X-Men ‘97. The show, now streaming new episodes every Wednesday on Disney+, is a child born out of the nostalgia of the kids who once gathered around box-style televisions on Saturday morning to watch their favorite heroes. More importantly, those young viewers are now grown adults, with several of them a part of this new project.
Among those adults is supervising producer Jake Castorena. Before crossing the tracks to Marvel, Castorena predominantly worked with the tremendously successful animation team at DC, helming direct-to-video films such as The Death of Superman, and Reign of the Supermen. While the Dceu at times floundered in its creative journey, Warner Bros. could almost always count on its DC animated films to be critically and even commercially successful.
