The CW’s fall 2023-2024 primetime schedule looks nothing like the network’s previous lineups. Gone are all the comic book-inspired superhero series, and in their place are British and Canadian imports along with unscripted reality shows.
All American is the only original The CW scripted series to appear on the upcoming season’s roster. Walker, which was recently renewed for a shorter season, will return midseason. And the network still hasn’t decided what to do about Gotham Knights, All American: Homecoming, or Superman & Lois.

The CW continues to make big moves, canceling much of its original lineup (most recently Kung Fu and The Winchesters) as it figures out the direction to take under new owner Nexstar. Today they made another major move, picking up 61st Street after AMC canceled the drama.
The eight-episode first season starring Courtney B. Vance premiered on AMC on April 10, 2022. A second season was filmed, however, the series was canceled before it aired.
“61st Street is a gripping, star-studded premium drama led by a powerhouse performance from Courtney B. Vance and featuring an incredibly talented ensemble cast and creatively brilliant team of producers,” stated Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment, The CW Network. “We are proud The CW is now the broadcast home of 61st Street and cannot wait to introduce this series to a whole new audience.

“I was so beside myself with joy,” admits Emmy winner Ann Dowd about delving into her character’s past last season on “The Handmaid’s Tale.” In our recent webchat, she adds, “Those days shooting that episode, there was no sense of time whatsoever and I’m telling you, you have a sense of time on a set because the days are long. Zero. It could’ve been the first scene of the day or the last. I didn’t care.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Dowd above.

Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” received 11 Primetime Emmy Award nominations on Tuesday for its three orphaned Season 2 episodes, but it’s definitely not too early to look at its Emmy prospects next year for Season 3. In the midst of the looming onscreen resistance, the show, which returned on June 5, found a moment to explore Aunt Lydia’s backstory in the eighth episode “Unfit,” which could catapult Ann Dowd all the way into next year’s drama supporting actress lineup and back at the podium.
While Aunt Lydia has been sending chills down our spines since the moment she walked onscreen, she’s never felt like a one-note villain. Whether it’s tears bleeding down her face as she commands the handmaids to stone Janine (Madeline Brewer), or her denouncing the silencing of women to June (Elisabeth Moss), Dowd has always visibly portrayed Lydia’s inner turmoil. Writer-director Roxanne Benjamin makes her feature debut with this slow-burning survival thriller, having previously contributed to horror anthology movies Southbound and Xx. Showcasing a command of tension and atmosphere, the film confirms Benjamin as a genre talent to watch.
Set in the fictional Brighton Rock State Park, Body at Brighton Rock begins with rookie ranger Wendy (Karina Fontes) agreeing to swap duties with her friend Maya (Emily Althaus), partly to prove that she’s up to the job of trail maintenance and partly so Maya can flirt with a cute co-worker. Wendy duly hits the mountainous trail, putting up warning signs about bears and the dangers of hiking alone, while bopping happily away to music on her phone. Then disaster strikes – she loses her map and makes her way to a peak,...

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Wednesday, July 10’s episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 3)
Aunt Lydia’s backstory was finally revealed on this week’s episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” with a story that may actually have you sympathizing for the devil responsible for many of the horrors inflicted upon the Handmaids of Gilead.
Wednesday’s hour of the Hulu drama gave us a glimpse into the former life of Ann Dowd’s Lydia, who once upon a time was an elementary school teacher with deeply Christian values and a deep concern for her young students. Lydia takes an interest in one little boy, Ryan (Ian Ho), in particular and his mother, Noelle, who isn’t doing a fantastic job of parenting him. When Noelle (played by Emily Althaus) and Lydia grow close due to Lydia’s desire to help her improve, the young mother encourages Lydia...

"You need to stay and secure the area." Magnolia Pictures has debuted the first trailer for an indie horror survival thriller film titled Body at Brighton Rock, the second feature film following Southbound from filmmaker Roxanne Benjamin. The story follows a novice park ranger who discovers a body, and must spend the night guarding a potential crime scene on a remote mountain trail as night descends. Karina Fontes stars as Wendy, with a cast including Casey Adams, Emily Althaus, Miranda Bailey, Martin Spanjers, Matt Peters, Susan Burke, John Getz, and Brodie Reed. Plus a big bear! Or so it seems... Perhaps this trailer shows too much, but it's also just trying to get our attention in the swarm of so many films. This just premiered at SXSW this month to some mixed but mostly good reviews, one describing it as "an intriguing cinematic rumination on the effects of isolation and fear.

When it comes to rewarding the best comedic cast on television, the SAG Awards often simply go with the biggest cast. Recent winners like “Orange is the New Black” (2014-2016), “Glee” (2009), “Desperate Housewives” (2004-2005) and “Ally McBeal” (1998) all prevailed thanks in part to having the most cast members on the voting ballot. Interestingly enough, all four of these were also hour-long dramedies, which suggests SAG voters are more apt to give the prize to large casts when they’re also in large productions.
What does this statistic mean in terms of predicting the 2018 SAG Awards? “Orange is the New Black” once again boasts the biggest comedy cast with a record-setting 45 men and women nominated for the Netflix prison series. That’s up from 37 cast members in 2016, 34 in 2015, and 40 in 2014. Of this year’s other nominated ensembles, Netflix’s “Glow” consists of 18 cast members, followed by HBO’s “Veep” at 15, ABC...

The Strange Ones is a maddening, yet exceptionally-directed debut feature from acclaimed short filmmaking duo Lauren Wolkstein and Christopher Radcliff, adapted from their 2011 short the film of the same name. Opening with a series of images, The Strange Ones never gives away the story, allowing us to wonder with two guys whom seem to be brothers, Nick (Alex Pettyfer), the protective older one, and Jeremiah (James Freedson-Jackson), the younger one. Running from a burning house revealed to us quickly in the film’s evocative opening sequence, they soon find themselves in a motel where desk clerk Kelly (Emily Althaus) offers to let them stay for free off-season. Nick, it would appear, has been providing additional compensation to Kelly, although looks can be incredibly deceiving as Jeremiah berates Kelly for trusting Nick, claiming him to be cruel, violent, and gay in a chilling monologue.
