TNT is apparently out of the scripted series business and dropped the final season of its last original, Snowpiercer, before it could air. On the positive side, the cable channel did license Sky's The Lazarus Project from the UK and also picked up the second season. If the series sees a third season, will TNT stay on board, or will the channel cancel this show too? Stay tuned. *Status update below.

Netflix and Shondaland have released the official trailer and a set of new images for ‘Bridgerton’ Season 3. The trailer teases the steamy, friends-to-lovers romantic beginnings of Nicola Coughlan’s Penelope Featherington and Luke Newton’s Colin Bridgerton.
The eight-episode third season finds Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) having finally given up on her long-held crush on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) after hearing his disparaging words about her last season. She has, however, decided it’s time to take a husband, preferably one who will provide her with enough independence to continue her double life as Lady Whistledown, far away from her mother and sisters.

But lacking in confidence, Penelope’s attempts on the marriage mart fail spectacularly.

Hope Dickson Leach may have moved the action of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic from London to Edinburgh, but she's stayed true to the gothic nature of the original. A film that started life as a hybrid theatre production with the National Theatre of Scotland, this is the tale of man and monster reflected through the eyes of lawyer Utterson (Lorn Macdonald). Rather than focusing on the transformation of the doctor (Henry Pettigrew) we all know so well, it's the increasingly power-mad Utterson's shift that holds sway. Dickson Leach uses the theatricality of the hybrid to strong stylistic effect and told us she relished returning to the source material saying she was "bewitched by the text". If...

Henry Pettigrew and Lorn Macdonald in The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde Photo: Courtesy of Eiff Hope Dickson Leach’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde premieres on Sky Arts at 9pm on October 30. It’s the final destination of the reimagining of the Robert Louis Stevenson that began as a hybrid theatre piece and then screened in cinemas. Her retelling, co-adapted with Vlad Butucea, offers a change from the usual sight of Dr Jekyll (Henry Pettigrew) growing fur and turning monstrous in his lab in favour of coming at the story more from Stevenson’s original perspective of lawyer Gabriel Utterson (Lorn Macdonald), who finds himself becoming increasingly morally compromised as the tale progresses. We can’t up with Dickson Leach to talk about creating the hybrid film with the National Theatre of Scotland and coming at it from a different angle after...

“It’s a mad way to make a film, and I’m not sure it’s not something I would rush into again,” director Hope Dickson Leach said of the process behind her latest feature, the Edinburgh competition title The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Leach, best known for her well-received debut, The Levelling, which debuted at Toronto in 2016, was approached by the National Theatre of Scotland during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic to create a hybrid film-theatre project that could engage audiences while health restrictions were still in place.
The result was a stage production of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, performed live at the Leith Theatre in Edinburgh by a troop of actors who were tracked around the venue by six cameras. The footage was mixed and edited live by Leach, who sat in an operating van outside the venue.

Appropriately the City of Edinburgh takes centre stage in this retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella. Relocating the story to the Scottish capital Hope Dickinson Leach (The Levelling) is given free rein to explore all its gothic glory, to spin a tale of human behaviour and the inhumanity of the upper classes.
Going back to the source, our story concerns Gabriel Utterson (Lorn MacDonald), a solicitor of extremely modest means. Quiet and well-mannered he has all the hallmarks of a Victorian gentleman except the status itself. A drawback which he hopes his friendship with Doctor Henry Jekyll (Henry Pettigrew) could one day remedy. However, Jekyll is prone to strange behaviour, changing his will in favour of his assistant Mr Hyde, a man curiously linked to violent assaults and deaths throughout the city. As Utterson edges closer to the truth of the two men he finds his place in the city elevated by the wealthy,...

James Hawes‘ Holocaust drama “One Life” will be the American Express Gala at the 67th BFI London Film Festival.
The film tells the true story of Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London broker who, in the months leading up to WWII, rescued 669 children from the Nazis. Fifty years later, in 1988, Winton is haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England. It’s not until a live television show “That’s Life” surprises him with the surviving children – now adults – seated all around him that he can finally make peace with the loss he had carried for five decades.
The cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Johnny Flynn, Lena Olin, Romola Garai, Alex Sharp, Marthe Keller, Jonathan Pryce and Helena Bonham-Carter.
Hawes said: “This film pretty much begins and ends in London and says so much about the people of this city, its heart and its history.

This recent Scots indie has plenty to recommend it, including the perfect pairing casting of Lorn Macdonald - who won a Scots BAFTA for his trouble - and Christian Ortega as two teenagers determined to stop at nothing to attend their first illegal rave. Set against the backdrop of a political clampdown on the 90s music scene, Brian Welsh and Kieran Hurley do a bang on job of expanding on their stage play, capturing the scene of the time in sharp black and white with a pop of colour in unexpected places. From the high energy performances to a soundtrack that features The Prodigy, Leftfield and Prodigy, it's got its finger on the pulse. Read our full review.

In a year marked by a stagnant box office and distributors experimenting with a wide variety of releases, what does an overlooked film constitute? While there are fewer means than in years past to quantify such a metric, there are still plenty of films that didn’t get their due throughout 2020 and deserve more attention in the weeks, months, years to come.
Sadly, many documentaries would qualify for this list, but we stuck strictly to narrative efforts; one can instead read our rundown of the top docs here. In today’s film news roundup, Kazakh action-adventure movie “Tomiris” and Scottish music film “Beats” find U.S. homes and the Lulu Wilson thriller “Becky” opens at more than 40 drive-ins.
Acquisition
Arclight Films has sold Well Go USA the U.S. distribution rights to the historical action-adventure “Tomiris,” centered on Queen Tomiris during the 6th Century B.C.

Almira Tursyn stars as Tomiris along with Adil Akhmetov and Aizhan Lighg, and they all perform their own stunts. Akan Sataytev directed the film, which was theatrically released in Kazakhstan in October and became one of the highest-grossing films in the country’s history.

This Outlander article contains Major spoilers for the Season 5 finale.
In the Outlander Season 5 finale, we see the horrific fallout from Claire’s abduction. While this mostly takes the form of having to watch Claire as she endures physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of Lionel Brown and the other bandits, we also get an update on how the citizens of Fraser’s Ridge are doing post-attack on the Ridge. Namely, that Geordie was killed by Lionel and his compatriots.
Who is Geordie, you may be asking yourself. A good question! The Geordie in question is not Print Shop Geordie (Lorn MacDonald), aka Jamie’s irritable print shop assistant who was such a charming addition to the Season 3 cast of characters. Nor is he Season 1 Geordie (Bryan Larkin), aka Geordie Dougal, who was memorably impaled by a wild board back in the Castle Leoch days. No, the current...

"Rave to your grave...!" Altitude Films has debuted a dance-able official UK trailer for an indie film titled Beats, which premiered at the Slamdance and Rotterdam Film Festivals earlier this year. Set in the summer of 1994, the film is about two best mates from a small Scottish town who head out for one last night together before life takes them in different directions. Going to an illegal rave, the boys journey into an underworld of anarchy, freedom and collision with the law, as they share a night that they will never forget. Beats is executive produced by Steven Soderbergh, and presented in black & white, which is a cool choice. The party film stars Cristian Ortega, Lorn Macdonald, Laura Fraser, and Brian Ferguson. This looks damn good, thanks to an excellently energetic trailer with some nice touches (and awesome vintage techno music). Here's the official UK trailer (+ poster) for Brian Welsh's Beats,...

An adaptation to cinema of any kind is a challenge and it is no different for the closing film of this years’ Glasgow Film Festival, Beats.
Kieran Hurley’s stage play is set in a Scottish town that follows two best friends, Johnno (Cristian Ortega) and Spanner (Lorn MacDonald), in what is a coming of age film set against the backdrop of the ’90s rave scene.
Director Brian Welsh grabs your attention immediately with the films striking black and white display. It is set in a time of youth up-rise against the establishment in protest of The Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 that makes “gatherings of people around music characterised wholly or pre-dominantly by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats” illegal.
This gives way to the pair in revolt following the path to an illegal rave in what you feel is their last big blowout together.

A snappy, scrappy, straining-at-the-leash coming-of-ager from bleakest Scotland, Brian Welsh’s “Beats” takes place in 1994 — two years before the release of “Trainspotting,” though 23 years on, it feels like something of an heir to Danny Boyle’s Nineties yardstick. The same spirit of raggedly exuberant, techno-pumped nihilism courses through both films. It’s something of a jolt, then, to realize that while Boyle’s film was an of-the-moment youth revolt, “Beats” is an alternately wistful and furious period piece — looking back at an unstable, exciting era of Cool Britannia and incipient cultural liberation that stalled somewhere along the way to Brexit Britain. That’s the subtext, at least: the surface is a rollicking buddy movie, both funny and stomach-churning as it follows two gawky 15-year-old lads seeking a debauched sendoff to childhood.

What exactly are Johnno and Spanner? There are moments when the two Scottish teens hate each other’s guts with bilious fervor, others when they’re the “dream team and that,” inseparable and co-dependent best friends à la Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal in Y Tu Mamá También, others still when their bromance veers into an uncharted, emotionally complex terrain. Brian Welsh’s rollicking Beats thrives on these ambiguities, on a greater-than-life friendship between an introvert and his volcanic and beguilingly ruffian neighbor as they brace for a night out that’s likely to be their last–or at any rate, the last rave their central Scotland turf may ever host.

In this episode of Outlander, titled "A. Malcolm," Claire and Jamie get to know each other again, Jamie's printing business is a front for his real occupation and Claire reunites with other faces from her past.
On the morning of Claire's reappearance, it's business as usual for Jamie. He's got a woman in his life who sends him off to work; he greets acquaintances in the street and arrives at his print shop. He discovers that two men, Hayes (Keith Fleming) and Lesley (James Allenby-Kirk), spent the night there. It seems Jamie is in the habit of printing politically subversive material, and Hayes and Lesley help him distribute it to the masses -- acts punishable by death. Jamie also employs a disgruntled young man named Geordie (Lorn Macdonald), who Jamie sends out on an errand.
