The King of Monsters finally has his share of Oscars glory.
In an ironic triumph of small over large, Japanese monster movie sensation Godzilla Minus One — which was made for only about $15 million — beat out four big-budget Hollywood tentpoles to win the best visual effects category. It’s the first time in decades that a non-u.S. studio film has won the category. Despite its deep influence on the history of visual effects in cinema, this year was the first time in the Godzilla franchise’s seven-decade history that it was nominated for an Oscar.
Godzilla Minus One was written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also headed up the film’s VFX team, which included Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi and Tatsuji Nojima. The team is now Japan’s first-ever winner of the best visual effects Oscar. In another rarity, a director winning the category has only occurred once before...

The team behind Godzilla Minus One brought their beloved character with them to the 2024 Oscars. The group walked the red carpet in shoes adorned with Godzilla sculptures gripping the heels, and holding figurines of the fictional monster inside the theater.
The Oscars red carpet isn’t the first place the figurines have traveled this awards season. They were first seen in a video of the group learning they earned a nomination, and later again at the Oscar nominees luncheon last month.

Toho released a new Godzilla film, titled Godzilla Minus One (read our review Here), in Japan on November 3rd, which happens to be Godzilla Day – the anniversary of the 1954 release of the original Godzilla movie. The film made its way over to the United States in December… and it became the highest grossing live-action Japanese film in North America even before a black and white version was released under the title Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color. Director Takashi Yamazaki has let it be known that he’s interested in making a sequel, and during a new interview with Empire magazine he revealed that he would like to feature some “kaiju vs. kaiju” action in the follow-up, if Toho lets him make it!
Yamazaki said, “I would certainly like to see what the sequel would look like. I know that Shikishima’s war seems over, and we’ve reached this state...

Toho’s Godzilla Minus One just made its way back into U.S. theaters over the weekend with a brand new black & white version of the Oscar-nominated movie, and along with that new release comes a major bit of news. The film has now crossed over $55 Million in total U.S. box office, making it the #3 Highest Grossing Foreign Language Film in U.S. history!!
Godzilla Minus One passed Hero ($53.7 million) and Parasite ($53.3) to claim that honor. The critically acclaimed film’s worldwide total currently stands at a massive $102.6 million.
The only international films ahead of Godzilla Minus One at the U.S. box office are:

Godzilla Minus One is currently just $2.5 million shy of Life Is Beautiful‘s U.S. box office total, which would put it in the #2 spot for international films at the U.

Blue Giant is the animated story of a teenage boy, Dai Miyamoto (Yûki Yamada) who wants to be a rising star of Japanese jazz. The plot is thin and lacks tension. Boy meets Jazz, boy meets sax, boy meets band, boy practices sax, on the eve of the band's breakthrough gig tragedy strikes and one of the band members can't make it but band plays anyway, etc. The narrative is pretty much devoid of subplot and the ending is given away at several points in the film.
The film lacks dimensions beyond plot. The three main characters are dull, slightly drawn and don't interact meaningfully outside of their own little bubble. There is nothing in the way of discernible subtext. The animation is conservative and doesn't fit the subject matter. When the unimaginatively named band Jass walk on stage they come with all the anime tropes of thugs going to a.

The taxonomy of Godzilla movies has been carefully considered and deliberately arranged for many years, cordoning off various "eras" of Godzilla movies — eras named after Japanese emperors — into their own, neatly distinguishable chronologies. 1954's "Gojira" through 1975's "Terror of Mechagodzilla" constitute the Showa era, encompassing 15 films. The series was rebooted in 1984 with "Return of Godzilla," and the second era, the Heisei era, ran through "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah" in 1995. Roland Emmerich's 1998 English-language "Godzilla" is an oddity in that it exists outside of an era or a continuity. 1999 through 2004 — that is: "Godzilla 2000" through "Godzilla: Final Wars" — constitutes the Millennium era, although the continuity of one of the films in that era is questionable.
2016's "Shin Godzilla," like Emmerich's film, also exists in its own continuity. A trilogy of animated Godzilla films, also in its own universe, was released in 2017 and 2018. And, of course, the American Monsterverse series has been humming...

"Godzilla Minus One" is one of the best Godzilla movies of all time. At times a riff on "Jaws," it's also an homage to the 1954 original movie and technically a sequel to "Oppenheimer." Yes, the 33rd film in the franchise feels radically different and yet comfortably familiar. It uses a post-war setting to tell another story of humanity's first meeting with the King of Monsters, bringing back the original film's nuclear imagery by giving an update to Godzilla's atomic breath. This helps turn the titular kaiju into a terrifying force of nature bringing about divine punishment.
Perhaps the biggest achievement of "Godzilla Minus One" is how it does the unthinkable and makes you care about the puny humans being crushed by the giant monster. Again, the post-war setting gives the film a historical background to mine meaningful drama, with the protagonist being a failed kamikaze pilot with survivor's guilt...

Godzilla Minus One, the 37th film in Japan’s long-running giant monster movie franchise, marches into U.S. theaters on Friday — and the early reaction from critics is ecstatic.
“Godzilla Minus One isn’t just a good Godzilla movie,” writes ReelViews critic James Berardinelli in a characteristic take. “It’s an excellent Godzilla movie – arguably among the best ever to grace the screen.”
Written and directed by acclaimed CG animator and VFX artist Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus One is a period film that takes the giant Kaiju back to his roots, showing the creature emerging just as Japan is struggling to recover from the ravages of World War 2. It stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki.
U.S. critics have unanimously praised the film for the remarkable visual mileage Yamazaki got out of the project’s relatively small budget, as well...

Unless he’s palling around with Minilla or Godzilla Jr., it’s hard not to see Godzilla as anything other than a 20,000-ton, fire-breathing metaphor. When used well, that symbolic weight crystalizes the terror of living in a world in which 100,000 people can have their lives snuffed out by atomic weapons. When used poorly, well, Godzilla fights a smog monster.
This tension between human weight and the sheer awesomeness of giant monsters has plagued all variations of the franchise since the first sequel to the 1954 original, Godzilla Raids Again (1955). More recently, it has stymied Legendary Pictures, the studio responsible for the lackluster MonsterVerse series, which includes 2014’s Godzilla and the current Apple TV+ series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Time and again, the MonsterVerse distracts from their kaiju—excuse me, MUTOs—with dull human drama that not even charismatic performers such as Kurt Russell, Brian Tyree Henry, and Vera Farmiga can save.

Writer-director Yamazaki Takashi’s Godzilla Minus One begins on an island outpost in 1945, as kamikaze pilot Kôichi Shikishima (Kamiki Ryûnosuke) makes an impulsive choice to feign technical issues so he can avoid carrying out his suicidally nationalist duty. To him, living in shame is preferable to dying for glory, though the airman’s decision fatalistically coincides with the first appearance of a certain ravenous reptilian, who devours his way through a troop of aircraft mechanics while Kôichi cowers just out of sight.
