Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s 2005 hit movie has finally been adapted into a TV show after several stop-start attempts. Created by Donald Glover and his “Atlanta” colleague Francesca Sloane, the series follows two secret agents who go undercover as a married couple in order to complete missions for a mysterious organization.
Glover stars as one half of the duo while “Pen15” star/creator Maya Erskine features as the other. Glover is reliably excellent as John Smith but it’s Erskine, as Jane Smith, who steals the show, as noted by critics.
Kristen Baldwin (Entertainment Weekly) stated: “Erskine — so wonderfully, uninhibitedly awkward in ‘PEN15’ — brings a riveting stillness to Jane. Her character’s inscrutable mien keeps John and the audience a little off-balance, though Erskine reveals glimmers of emotional desolation in Jane’s steady gaze.”
Aaron Pruner (The Wrap) observed: “Erskine, who many will recognize as the brace-faced 13-year old in Hulu comedy “PEN15,...

After very positive reviews and a growing fanbase, Amazon’s reimagining Mr. & Mrs. Smith has officially been renewed for a second season at the streaming service, which is definitely great news. The first season ended on February 2, 2024, so this renewal is quite quick, as it came after just three and a half months (more or less). The series has been described as a reimaging of the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but with a different take on the story and the whole concept. The first season starred Donald Glover and Maya Erskine as the titular married couple who lead very different lives in reality.

It’s official: Mr. & Mrs. Smith will be back on the case.
Amazon kicked off its inaugural meeting with Madison Avenue ad buyers Tuesday with a slew of announcements, including news that the action series starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine has been renewed for a second season.
A reimagining of the 2005 feature that starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Glover co-created the series with his Atlanta colleague Francesca Sloane, with the latter returning as showrunner for season two. It’s unclear if Glover and Erskine will return to star as Amazon has not formally confirmed any casting for the newly ordered season.
The series was originally poised to star Glover alongside Fleabag favorite Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with the Star Wars duo also serving as co-creators. But, as Glover explained in a THR cover story, the friends disagreed on a larger concept for the reimagined Smith and agreed to part ways.

Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are forces to be reckoned with together in Prime Video’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith. But when they have to face off against each other, things really heat up.
Created by Glover and Francesca Sloane — the two previously collaborated on the hit FX series Atlanta — Mr. and Mrs. Smith follows two strangers who are paired as a married couple as they both begin new careers as spies. Known as John and Jane Smith, they are forced to get close to one another as they face the world’s criminal underbelly together. Throughout the eight-episode series, Glover and Erskine are part of this delicate dance between strangers, not knowing how close one can get or if they can trust one another. As their bond grows, they evolve into a butt-kicking duo who eventually fall in love and, as always, that’s when the stakes are highest.

In the ever-evolving landscape of television where reboots are normalized, Mr. and Mrs. Smith emerges as a refreshing take on established material. Starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine and helmed by co-creator Francesca Sloane, the series was highlighted at Deadline’s Contenders Television awards-season event, where the duo delved into the creative process behind the innovative adaptation.
The Prime Video series follows two strangers who are recruited by a mysterious organization to act as married spies named John and Jane Smith. This setup paves the way for high-stakes espionage entangled with evolving personal dynamics.
As Erskine put it on the panel, “The couple must work through missions as their espionage skills, and developing relationship, are put to the test as they try not to get killed in the process.”
One might wonder how Erskine and Glover fostered believable chemistry on screen. Erskine, on the panel with Sloane, shared a pivotal moment.

Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is taking this Emmy race seriously.
With stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine leading the charge, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” which draws inspiration from the 2005 movie featuring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, is set to compete in the drama categories at this year’s awards ceremony.

When Mr. & Mrs. Smith was announced as a TV series for Prime Video in 2021, there were plenty of reasons to be skeptical about the project.
It was based on a movie of the same name that did reasonably well but isn't especially well-remembered.
The announced starring duo of Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge was intriguing, especially considering that both performers were credited as creators.
Both had a history of starring in and creating successful series, including Glover with Atlanta and Waller-Bridge with Fleabag. Plus, Waller-Bridge served as the showrunner in the first season of Killing Eve, another prestige series about an assassin.
But then Waller-Bridge dropped out of the project just a few months after it was announced due to "creative differences," with Maya Erskine replacing her as the show's female lead. Glover and Francesca Sloane are credited as the co-creators.
Beyond that, the series had its premiere delayed repeatedly,...

Seven years ago, Donald Glover won his first two Emmys, Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Directing for “Atlanta.” While he missed out on nominations last year for the final season of his FX series — he did receive a writing bid for “Swarm” — Glover is back in the hunt this cycle with “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” Inspired by the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie film of the same name, the spy series is competing in drama, which means Glover could become just the second man and third person to win lead Emmys in comedy and drama.

Mr & Mrs Smith Season 2 is likely because of how successful the first season was. Remakes are the hottest commodity right now, and with Twilight and Harry Potter in the works, it isn’t a surprise that the iconic 2005 film of the same name that brought Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt together got the same treatment. The remake is worth a watch, with Atlanta creator Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane creating the Prime Video series. Like the movie, the series follows spies Jane and John on secret missions before they turn against each other. The spy American TV series starring Glover and Maya Erskine is entertaining, ranking as one of Amazon’s top five

In honor of International Women’s Day, IndieWire is pleased to share its annual female filmmakers to watch list featuring a rising assortment of women writers and directors with some of the biggest projects of the year.
On the big screen, Theda Hammel’s Sundance breakout “Stress Positions” went on to become a leading title on this year’s New Directors/New Films lineup and is set to close out the festival. Alessandra Lacorazza’s “In the Summers” won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance, and also earned Lacorazza the Directing prize. Cazzie David and Elisa Kalani co-wrote and co-directed SXSW selected film “I Love You Forever,” which is produced by Diablo Cody.
While David also co-stars in the film, another actress makes her directorial debut with a similarly sinister premiere: Anna Kendrick directs and stars in “Woman of the Hour” based on the haunting true story of the “Dating Game” killer.

The eight-episode series debuted on February 2 to become the No. 1 series on Prime Video in more than 130 countries. It is now one of the Top 5 new series debuts ever for Amazon in terms of total viewers in the U.S.
Amazon, as is typical, remains tight-lipped about the exact viewership data. Next month, there will likely be more numbers available via Nielsen’s streaming charts.
It is also noteworthy that Amazon is specifically touting U.S. viewership, since that is the audience that Nielsen measures. In the past, the streamer has often opted to promote global viewership, which is much harder to quantify without proprietary data from the company itself.
Because of this, it’s expected that the series will make an appearance on those charts, especially because all eight episodes were released at once, which gives it...

The much-anticipated Mr. & Mrs Smith reboot TV series premiered on Prime Video last week (February 2), with Donald Glover and Maya Erskine starring in the titular roles. But the show wasn’t always supposed to look like that. Originally announced on February 12, 2021, the series, based on the 2005 film of the same name, was set to be created by and star Glover and Fleabag‘s Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with Francesca Sloane serving as co-creator and showrunner. However, Waller-Bridge exited the project in September 2021 following creative differences with Glover. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview, the Atlanta star and creator opened up about his creative relationship with Waller-Bridge and why exactly things didn’t work out between them. “I think because we were friends and I really liked Phoebe and we’d worked together,” Glover said, referring to their time as co-stars on Solo: A Stars Wars Film. “It’s...

Taking old concepts and bringing them back to a newer generation seems to be the bread and butter of Hollywood; for a time in the early 2000s, this meant taking old TV series and bringing them to the big screen as dumb comedies or action flicks, but in recent times reimagining these old properties seems to be the all-around choice. It’s a twist both title characters of the new Amazon Prime Video series “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” might love. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” co-creator, writer, director, and star Donald Glover invoked the end of a marriage to describe his creative split from one-time “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge – months after Waller-Bridge similarly compared the dissolution of their relationship to a failed romantic union.
“It’s a divorce in a weird way,” Glover said. “You’re like, ‘Oh shit, this should have worked.’ And this is just me, being honest, but I think a good relationship is one where you don’t waver from the extremely uncomfortable. And I don’t know if we were ever going to get to a place where we could be completely brutal to each other.”

Donald Glover Breaks Silence on Creative Split With Phoebe Waller-Bridge: ‘It’s Like a Real Divorce’
Donald Glover is opening up about his professional “divorce” from Phoebe Waller-Bridge, aka his original co-star in Amazon’s just-launched reboot of Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Waller-Bridge dropped out of the project back in 2021, seven months into development. The “amicable split” stemmed from the Fleabag auteur having a “different creative vision for the series” than Glover, who was co-creating it with both her and his onetime Atlanta collaborator Francesca Sloane. (The Mrs. Smith void was eventually filled with PEN15‘s Maya Erskine.)

As IndieWire’s Ben Travers’ noted in his review of Prime Video’s latest original, “This isn’t your parents’ ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith.'”
The Prime Video series starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine shares a title with Simon Kinberg’s 2005 film, but similarities mostly stop there. Francesca Sloane, who co-created the series with Glover, told IndieWire that they “didn’t really consider the movie very much at all.”
“This is without any shade on the movie — I think the movie is really fun, and does what it’s supposed to do for that kind of film,” she said. “We just wanted to tell a story that felt satisfying to us. We wanted to tell a love story about people who might actually be incompatible, and then see why they want to work through that anyway — first because of circumstance and then by choice — and then have that go...

Though it’s based on a 2005 movie of the same name, Prime Video’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith is something that’s increasingly rare these days: an honest-to-goodness TV show. The Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane-created spy thriller understands the required rhythms of its medium very well. Each episode presents a self-contained chapter within the dangerous marriage of John (Glover) and Jane Smith (Maya Erskine) while also subtly forwarding their overall story.
The commitment to the usual TV format also means that Mr. and Mrs. Smith gets to introduce one hell of a roster of guest stars. Save for its finale, every episode of this show features at least one stupendously talented and famous guest star. If you’re wondering who each of these guest stars are or where you’ve previously seen them: don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. What follows is a list of the Mr. and Mrs. Smith cast,...

Prime Video recently premiered a thrilling rendition of the 2005 classic action of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in pivotal roles for the Amazon Original series. The story revolves around two strangers who land a job working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travel, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. While the thrill and drama from the 2005 version remains, many exciting elements have been adapted to fit the world and characters of the show.
Erskine, who plays the mysterious and lethal agent Jane in the series Mr. & Mrs. Smith, delves into what sets this rendition apart from the original blockbuster. She reveals, “In the movie, they meet and don’t know each other are spies. In this version, we know we are entering this agreement of becoming partners and essentially carrying out missions together.

How do you replace someone as iconic as Brad Pitt? That’s the challenge that Donald Glover found himself facing when he took on the role of John Smith in the Prime Video adaptation of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” which he co-created alongside Francesca Sloane. Glover’s take on the material is considerably more grounded than the 2005 Doug Liman film, but he still sought Pitt’s advice before stepping into his shoes.
Appearing on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Glover recalled having a brief conversation with Pitt before taking on the role. The “Atlanta” hyphenate explained that Pitt didn’t offer much substantive advice about the character and relied on his movie star charm to get out of the conversation.
“He didn’t give me any real pointers,” Glover said. “He kind of Brad Pitt-ed his way out of it. He just kind of like charmed his way. He was like,...

Francesca Sloane, the showrunner for Amazon Studios’ Mr. & Mrs. Smith series revealed one similarity it has with the original 2005 film the show is based on starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
The original movie follows a married couple who do not know the other is secretly a spy. At least, not until they end up being tasked with killing the same target—and then each other.
Now, that same concept has been revamped in a show starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. But, while it is based on the same ideas as the movie, there are plenty of differences as well.

This article contains spoilers up to episode 4 of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith."
The opening to director Doug Liman's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" set the tone for that movie, following a pair of super-spies for opposing agencies who, through sheer coincidence, happen to be a married couple living secret double lives. After the framing device places Brad Pitt's John Smith and Angelina Jolie's Jane Smith in couple's therapy, we flashback to the sultry circumstances of their original meet-cute and the whirlwind romance that ultimately resulted in a marriage that's now on autopilot. We quickly realize that they're both impossibly good-looking, extremely proficient at their jobs and basically never make a single mistake ... until their last assignment puts them on a collision course with one another, at least.
Now, it's Prime Video's turn to revitalize this concept through its own series, as spearheaded by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane. In place of Pitt and Jolie,...

When it comes to Prime Video's Mr. & Mrs. Smith series, viewers would be wise to check their expectations at the bulletproof door. Creators Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane are less concerned with rebooting the 2005 film than remixing it entirely: They deemphasize the espionage to instead center the relationship between two lonely recruits, played by Glover and Maya Erskine, navigating the real emotions underpinning their fake marriage.
In the most obvious departure from the film, John (Glover) and Jane Smith (Erskine) aren't rival spies, but employees paired up by their mysterious agency and given new identities as a married couple — "an old Kgb tactic," Jane explains during their first mission, intended to "draw less attention" to their work.

“Mr. and Mrs. Smith” opens with a scene that should feel familiar to action fans. A couple sits calmly in their country house, sipping drinks on the porch, when the emergence of an approaching car puts them on high-alert. Running inside, she tosses him the go-bag. He grabs a gun from the kitchen cabinet. The black SUV is getting closer. But she’s not moving anymore. “I can’t keep doing this,” she says. “I can’t keep running away.” He walks over to her, strokes her hair, and the beautiful couple share a passionate kiss. “Then we stop running,” he says.
What happens next is less familiar. Jarring, even. It sets up a series that’s only interested in cliches when they can be subverted, but still respects the sincerity required for love (and love stories) to flourish. “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” the Amazon Prime Video series from co-creators Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane,...

This post contains spoilers for Prime Video's "Mr. and Mrs. Smith."
At first glance, the new version of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" seems to share very little with the 2005 film of the same name. The new Prime Video series follows an entirely new Jane and John, this time played by Maya Erskine and series co-creator Donald Glover. While the Doug Liman film of the same name drops in on its married couple (played by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt) years after they begin working as contract killers for dueling companies, the reboot shows audiences the inception of its central couple's relationship.
But there are still a few details the two barely-related stories have in common. Both follow a spy couple who (don't read on if you haven't finished the new show yet!) eventually end up tasked with taking one another out. Each set of Smiths also work for top-secret companies...

Updating a 2005 action movie, one most remembered for a tabloid frenzy inspired by the on-set romance between its stars, was not on Francesca Sloane’s to-do list. And yet, Donald Glover called her a few years ago with that very proposition.
Sloane had been writing and producing on the final two seasons of Atlanta, a gig that cemented her membership in TV’s art house, and she anticipated her next project would be similarly less mainstream — an erotic comedy featuring animatronic dog puppets, for that matter. But Glover’s pitch was convincing. “I laughed, and then he explained why it’d be cool,” she says. “I was intrigued, then excited and then it became an undeniable ‘yes.’”
Where their Mr. & Mrs. Smith landed is a more subtle spin on the married spy conceit — one that puts priority on relationship dynamics and finds absurd and often surreal parallels in espionage and assassinations.

Officially, Prime Video’s spy drama Mr. and Mrs. Smith is based on the 2005 film of the same name. Unofficially, however, its origins are a bit murkier. Though this 2024 streaming iteration of Mr. and Mrs. Smith starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine shares its basic premise with the previous Brad Pitt and Angelina-starring version (a married couple who also happen to be spies), the series diverges from it in some major ways as well.
In an interview with The Today Show, Glover (who also co-created the 2024 series) even admitted to not having seen the 2005 Doug Liman-directed film when he decided to embark upon the project. Co-creator Francesca Sloane wrote in an open letter to fans that “No one would need a show that retold the same blockbuster movie. But what we set out to do was to make something wholly original.”

As a followup to Atlanta and Swarm, Donald Glover adapting Doug Liman’s entertaining 2005 spy caper Mr. and Mrs. Smith for a television format is an unlikely choice. That said, there’s a certain timeliness to the premise of a married spy couple trying to survive missions and each other, ideally suited for every generation.
This iteration, created by Glover and Francesca Sloane, is a strictly millennial-geared update with a progressive heart and more romantic soul to round out its stealthy concept. Whereas this Glover and Maya Erskine-starring update likely won’t spur a pop culture impact as significant as the formerly-renowned Brangelina film did, Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a sizably entertaining and meditative spy thriller fit for a millennial demographic.
Set in bustling NYC, two stranger spies, John (Glover) and Jane Smith (Erskine), are interviewed for a potential spy gig by a mysterious agency they only speak to via texts.

Playing a long-married couple in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Parker Posey and Wagner Moura are twinned forces of nature. They’re weird, they’re obnoxious, they’re so cheerful they’re borderline terrifying, and so obviously wild about each other they’re almost endearing. Whenever they’re onscreen, the entire show seems to sit up and hold its breath, eagerly aware that anything might happen in their presence.
Alas, they’re also guest stars. The couple actually at the center of the Prime Video comedy are the rather more sedate John (Donald Glover) and Jane (Maya Erskine). Mr. & Mrs. Smith has its delights, with a plot that sends the duo on glamorous top-secret missions to one picturesque location after another. But it’s all built on the wobbly foundation of a romance that’s more interesting in theory than in practice.

At one point in Amazon’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, John and Jane Smith (Donald Glover and Maya Erskine) become infatuated with another couple. Like them, the pair are part of an espionage program in which agents operate undercover as a married couple. Only these other Smiths seem so much more experienced and self-assured. There’s a movie-star swagger to them as they talk casually about the level of danger they’ve faced and their flawless mission record. It’s enough to make John and Jane, relative newbies in the field, feel inadequate.
Glover and Francesca Sloane might have felt a similar insecurity when they were asked to create a series based on Doug Liman’s 2005 box office hit starring two of the biggest movie stars on the planet, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, whose real-life love affair only ensured the film’s pop-cultural impact. Even by the standards of a Hollywood ecosystem where everything is IP, and IP is everything, the idea of adapting a TV show from Mr. & Mrs. Smith seemed odd.
