We are sharing this as a public service to those of you who like man vs beast vs man kind of action thrillers. Also, how ludicrous are the lion's teeth in this poster? Amazing. A trailer for Prey has just arrived online – and no, we’re not talking about that Predator movie that was just released a while back. This is a new movie called Prey, which Vertical will be giving a theatrical and VOD release on March 15th. It seems kind of soon to be sending another movie called Prey out into the world, but clearly Vertical disagrees. Ryan Phillippe (Shooter), Emile Hirsch (The Autopsy of Jane Doe), and Mena Suvari (American Beauty) star in this “nature run amok” survival thriller, and you can check out the trailer in the embed above. A poster for the film can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Exclusive: Ryan Phillippe (American Murderer), Emile Hirsch (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Mena Suvari (American Horror Story) will topline Kalahari, a new action thriller from Vertical, which has wrapped production.
Vertical fully financed the pic and has taken North American rights, with Voltage Pictures locking down rights for all international territories, preparing now to present the film to buyers at Cannes.
In the film written and directed by Mukunda Michael Dewil (Collide), a young couple is forced to flee their Christian missionary post in the Kalahari Desert aboard a rickety plane after an extremist militant group threatens their lives. Piloted by a corrupt smuggler (Hirsch), the plane loses power and crash-lands in the middle of an animal preserve populated by lions, leopards and hyenas. Injured, frightened, and being tracked by the extremists, this ragtag group must fight for their survival from both man and beast where only the strong will survive.

When “The Immaculate Room” cinematographer Rasa Partin was reading the script, he saw the line “giant white room” and thought nothing of it. “Sure, it’s a giant white room,” Partin says. As he continued to read through the pages and the story unfolded, he realized, “It is just a white room with a bed. There’s nothing else.”
The premise of the film, directed and written by Mukunda Michael Dewil, is a simple one: a young couple (Kate Bosworth and Emile Hirsch) are picked to spend 50 days in “The Immaculate Room.” If they manage to stay in the room, with no outside stimulation, they will walk away with a prize fund of 5 million each.
Partin’s first hurdle was how to approach shooting in the white room. Thanks to the pandemic, shooting was delayed by nine months. Typically, he would have worked with a production designer, but since Dewil didn’t have one,...

It’s a chicly austere and, at stray moments, provocative tabloid thriller in which Kate (Kate Bosworth) and Mikey (Emile Hirsch), as part of a mysterious contest, agree to spend 50 days living in a large bare white room. When they first walk in, they’re greeted by a Siri voice, British and female, who makes ritual pronouncements like “It is evening. Enjoy your stay in the Immaculate Room.” If they make it through all 50 days, they’ll get 5 million in prize money. It doesn’t sound all that hard, like two months of voluntary prison time minus the dirt and danger. And that’s the hook: Who wouldn’t do this for 5 million? But the fact that it sounds so do-able means the audience is asking from minute one: What’s the catch?
In a funny way, “The Immaculate Room” is a parable of boredom, which makes it a story for our time.

“People are catching up on films,” is how one arthouse executive described the current moment in specialty, which echoes the slowdown in studio wide releases.
August can be slow ahead of a trio of festivals – Venice, Toronto, New York – and a ramp up to awards season. It can also offer an less obstructed runway for specialty films to cross over (Gwyneth Paltrow in Emma). This summer has been slow, but strong word of mouth has boosted select films. Warner Bros.’ Elvis for one, is at 143 million, pushing five times what it made opening weekend. Focus Features’ Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris opened at 2 million but will cross 10 million. Rrr is a phenomenon, passing 11M. Greg Laemmle said he’s bringing the blockbuster from India back on August 26. Laemmle is also holding an event screening for Neon documentary Fire Of Love next Wed. and hopes that will keep other runs going.

On its surface, The Immaculate Room is a contest. A game. If you and your romantic partner can spend fifty days in a stark white room with nothing but a bed, minimalist couch-like ottoman, and bathroom that only allows one contestant at a time, you go home with five million dollars. It seems easy because it is—if you’re only looking at the surface. Peel back the layers of its conceit, however, and you see potential for participants to go stir-crazy with nothing but their own wits to keep them busy. Add public knowledge that the person orchestrating everything is a professor infamous for pricy social experiments that have ended in tragedy; you might think twice about whether the reward truly outweighs the risk.
Kate (Kate Bosworth) never bothered looking that deep. She sees nothing but the opportunity presented as the product of a rough childhood marked by money problems.

"Not everyone's so easily manipulated." Screen Media has released a trailer for The Immaculate Room, an indie sci-fi thriller from South African filmmaker Mukunda Michael Dewil. This premiered at the 2022 Mammoth Film Festival, and arrives on VOD and in theaters to watch this August. It's a clever, contained, single-room concept: The Immaculate Room tells the story of Mike and Kate, a seemingly perfect couple, who decide to try a psychological experiment to win 5 million if they can last 50 days in a sleek, white room in complete isolation. No phones, no family – only the Voice keeping them in check. But as the clock ticks down, the Room becomes more than it seems, putting them through cruel tests to break their resolve and grind them down. Emile Hirsch and Kate Bosworth star, with a few others (I won't spoil the surprises - though this trailer gives away plenty). It's an intriguing psychological...

The film will tell the true story of Trish Weir (Breslin), who in 1963 was kidnapped and brutally raped by Ernesto Miranda. Mark Canton and comic publisher Graphic India have hired Mukunda Michael Dewil to adapt the Indian superhero comic book series The Sadhu for the big screen.
The story centres on a young Westerner trained by the mystic Indian Sadhus.
Graphic India co-founders Sharad Devarajan and Gotham Chopra are producing the feature with Canton and David Hopwood.
“Besides his evident skills as a filmmaker, Mukunda has life experiences so close to what’s in the graphic novels that he is the perfect fit for our project,” said David Hopwood Sr, svp of development and production at Atmosphere Entertainment.
“Much like 300, The Sadhu is rich with mythic characters from a fantastical culture,” said Mukunda, who left a lucrative job at Ogilvy Advertising in Cape Town while in his 20s to live with the Sadhus of Vrindhavan in India.
“Throw in a far out mystical superhero and I think we’ve got the ingredients for another groundbreaking franchise.”...

Paul Walker movies: Few worthwhile efforts away from the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise (photo: Paul Walker in ‘Hours’) (See previous post: “Paul Walker Dead: Fast and Furious Actor Killed in Fiery Car Crash.”) Aside from the Fast and Furious franchise, Paul Walker was featured in about 15 movies since the turn of the century; most of those were little-seen releases that did nothing to expand his following beyond fans of slick, high-speed shenanigans, e.g., John Glenn’s thriller and straight-to-dvd release The Lazarus Project (2008), co-starring Piper Perabo; Wayne Kramer’s box office bomb Running Scared, with Vera Farmiga; John Stockwell’s mix of deep-sea adventure and crime thriller Into the Blue, with Jessica Alba and Josh Brolin; and another straight-to-dvd effort, Mukunda Michael Dewil’s poorly received thriller Vehicle 19 (2013). Paul Walker’s handful of more prestigious and/or successful films were Clint Eastwood’s World War II drama Flags of Our Fathers...

There's a new circus rolling into town, and this one favors a big chop over the big top. As if food prices at such an event weren't horrifying enough, Jack Reher will be doing his damnedest to bring some freaky terror from author William Ollie's Sideshow to the screen.
Reher is the screenwriter behind the upcoming Red Machine, aka Endangered, starring Billy Bob Thornton, James Marsden, Piper Perabo, and Thomas Jane. His Wet House, to be produced by Zero Gravity and directed by Mukunda Michael Dewil, is in pre-production. Reher also just completed an adaptation of the 80s cult classic Pin. Most recently, Reher adapted Jon Bassoff’s highly acclaimed debut novel Corrosion for the screen, and it is currently out to directors.

This summer has already seen Paul Walker re-team with Vin Diesel and take on a world of bad guys in the super-sized, smash hit "Fast & Furious 6." But if you're feeling the need for a bit more gasoline-fueled action, perhaps this smaller-scaled thriller will sate your appetite with the added bonus that you can watch it all in the comfort of your own home. "Vehicle 19" is coming to home video and in advance of its release, we've got an exclusive clip from the film. Featuring a script from Mukunda Michael Dewil that landed on the Black List in 2010 (he also directs), the story follows recently paroled man, who finds the entire police force after him when his seemingly innocent rental car has a female “passenger” tied up and stashed in the trunk. She's a key witness in a corruption trial, and he has to put the pedal to the...

Just a quick follow-up to this morning's story of a new director taking the helm of what was to be Thomas Jane's Wet House. After the announcement came, we did some digging, made a few calls, and now have an update for you.
Jane is no longer involved with the project as the producers decided to go in a different direction by opting for a female lead for the film. Casting is currently under way. Stay tuned.
South African writer-director Mukunda Michael Dewil has signed on to helm Wet House for Zero Gravity Entertainment. The elevated psychological thriller from scribe Jack Reher revolves around a psychologist who becomes entangled with the mysterious resident of a wet house, whose apparent psychic abilities help her aid the police in solving a string of grisly, bath salt-fueled massacres.

It's been awhile since last we spoke about the upcoming flick Wet House, but today news broke of a new director taking the helm, which was originally supposed to belong to star Thomas Jane.
Deadline is reporting that South African writer-director Mukunda Michael Dewil has signed on to helm Wet House for Zero Gravity Entertainment. The elevated psychological thriller from scribe Jack Reher revolves around a psychologist who becomes entangled with the mysterious resident of a wet house, whose apparent psychic abilities help her aid the police in solving a string of grisly, bath salt-fueled massacres.
“I like the idea that everything is layered with this atmosphere of unnamed trepidation — nothing can be trusted at face value, and that kind of foreboding really gives me a lot to work with when creating the world of this story,” Dewil said. Mark Holder and Christine Holder are producing and financing for Zero Gravity.

The essence of a great car chase is editing, that combination of shots -- points of view, inside and outside the car -- that make the viewer share the sense of speed, danger and G-forces that the drivers must feel.
"Vehicle 19" is a thriller set almost entirely inside a car that is intermittently chased, shot at, wrecked and repainted, all in real time and all in South Africa. It stars Paul ("Fast & Furious") Walker, who knows a thing about driving and looking anxious behind the wheel. So writer-director Mukunda Michael Dewil keeps his camera on his most valuable asset, his star -- Walker. The chases, wrecks and re-paint aren't shown in subjective shots that would have made this thriller thrilling.
Maybe that's because of the rental car Michael Woods (Walker) is driving. He stands out down there because he is, as one streetwise fellow points out, "an Ameri-can in a mini-van.

Vehicle 19 is best when it's silent. Mukunda Michael Dewil's film has the makings of a taut little thriller, but the writer-director has the twin disadvantages of needing to include dialogue and to rely on the services of Paul Walker to embody his protagonist. The film follows American Michael Woods (Walker) as he arrives in Johannesburg, South Africa, to reunite with his ex-wife after being released from prison and jumping parole. But when he's accidentally given the keys to the wrong rental car, he finds himself amid a scandal which involves a sex-trafficking ring and implicates the chief of police, who suddenly wants him dead. As Michael drives through the urban streets, dodging police vehicles, the film largely confines its setting to his car, allowing the sinister world out...

★★☆☆☆ American actor Paul Walker has carved out a career that largely consists of driving cars and being both fast and furious. Playing firmly within type, Walker returns to screens this week in Mukunda Michael Dewil's Vehicle 19 (2013). Alongside an international cast including Naima McLean and Gys De Villiers, Walker plays Michael Woods, a reckless ex-con determined to change his life for the better in an attempt to save his relationship with an estranged girlfriend. Unfortunately, a mix-up at a Johannesburg car rental company leaves Michael stuck with the wrong car and distressed hostage Rachel (McLean) in the boot.
Michael quickly becomes embroiled in a hot pursuit when he is chased across Johannesburg by a dangerous, corrupt and powerful Detective Smith (De Villers). Unable to go to the police and having already broken parole, Michael not only has the hostage's life to save, but he must also save his own...

Django Unchained; Trouble With the Curve; Vehicle 19; A Dark Truth
Quentin Tarantino is a lot of things, but concise isn't one of them. Buried inside the sprawling 165 minutes of Django Unchained (2012, Sony, 18), there's a very decent two-hour retro-ploitation romp struggling to escape the indulgence of Hollywood's most under-edited auteur. On the plus side, we have knife-sharp central performances from Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz as (respectively) the recently freed titular slave and sharpshooting "dentist" Dr King Schultz, on a mission to rescue Django's wife from the slimy clutches of Leonardo DiCaprio's Calvin Candie.
The real jaw-dropper, however, is a brilliantly counterintuitive turn from Samuel L Jackson as Candie's insanely loyal house-servant, Stephen, a terrifying portrait of head-turned devotion that offers the film's most potentially radical element. It's here that whatever rude "politics" this possesses (including the usual fetishisation of the "N word") has gnarly bite. Elsewhere, it's more fan-boyish fare,...

It looks like Frank Miller's comic book Hard Boiled is finally going to make its way to the big screen! Way back in 2001, David Fincher was attached to direct an adaptation of comic with Nicolas Cage in the lead role, but it never happened. It sure would have been interesting to see Fincher's take on it. The last thing we heard about the project was that Miller was going to direct it himself after he was finished with Sin City 2, but it looks like that isn't happening either.
During a recent interview with Bleeding Cool, South African director Mukunda Michael Dewil revealed that he's going to adapt it. You might not be familiar with Dewil yet, but he directed the film Vehicle 19, which is the other car movie that Paul Walker stars in. It has yet to be released. Anyway, here's what the director had to say:...

Fans who were eagerly awaiting 300: Rise of an Empire, the follow-up to Zack Snyder's original adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel 300, were dealt some bad news as the film (which takes place before, during and after the events of 300) was pushed back to a March 2014 release. But maybe news of another project bringing Miller's work to the big screen will help lessen the blow. Bleeding Cool recently sat down with Mukunda Michael Dewil, the director of Paul Walker's thriller Vehicle 19, and he revealed that he's currently working on an adaptation of Miller's 23-year-old comic miniseries Hard Boiled. More below! For those who aren't familiar with Hard Boiled, here's a brief synopsis: Carl Seltz is a suburban insurance investigator, a loving husband, and devoted father. Nixon is a berserk, homicidal tax collector racking up mind-boggling body counts in a diseased urban slaughterhouse. Unit Four is the...

Star Trek Into Darkness | Mud | A Hijacking | The Reluctant Fundamentalist | Our Children | Deadfall | Vehicle 19 | Village At The End Of The World | Journey To Italy
Star Trek Into Darkness (12A)
(Jj Abrams, 2013, Us) Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg. 132 mins
Those cinemagoers won over by Abrams's first Star Trek movie (even if they can barely remember it now) won't be disappointed with this finely tuned follow-up, which deftly balances action crises, sci-fi repartee and the ongoing Kirk/Spock bromance, but adds enough surprises to keep things interesting, largely by way of Cumberbatch's shifty supervillain.
Mud (12A)
(Jeff Nichols, 2012, Us) Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Reese Witherspoon. 130 mins
Another distinctive, beguiling southern parable from Nichols, this time tracking the friendship between two boys and the mysterious fugitive they find down by the river. It's like a mix of Stand By Me, Night Of The Hunter and Terrence Malick.
