American Idol did not *ahem* go easy on viewers during the first half of this season’s Final Judgment on Sunday, ending on yet another cliffhanger.
With 11 contestants already sent through to the Top 24 ahead of them, Paige Anne and Megan Danielle were called before the judges to learn their fates. But even after their Showstopper performances — Anne managed to slay Sia’s “California Dreamin'” from the safety of her hotel room, while Danielle wowed with a countrified take on Lady Gaga’s “Always Remember Us This Way” — the judges still couldn’t decide between them.

Austin Butler’s hips don’t lie. He becomes the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, possessing all of his signature quirks and emotional inflections in Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” Standing tall as the single best performance from the first half of 2022, Butler’s moves have thrust him into the Oscar race for best actor. However, his road to a nom won’t be easy, with a total miscast of his co-star Tom Hanks, who’s thrown into a fat suit with a questionable accent, and an overbaked runtime. The biopic’s awards success will be contingent upon the movie’s overall box office and possibilities in other Oscar categories.
Something dawned on me attending the screening of “Elvis” leading to its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May: There’s nobody who hasn’t heard of Elvis. Still, as time moves further away from his era, ending...

The American Idol hopefuls packed their bags and headed to “Hollywood Week.” It’s there they were greeted by familiar faces from the show’s 20-year history who served as mentors. Jordin Sparks, David Cook, Lauren Alaina, Ruben Studdard, Chayce Beckham, Lee DeWyze, and Haley Reinhart met with contestants who prepared to hit the stage for the “Genre Challenge.” Each Idol hopeful was tasked to identify who they are as an artist, choosing from the indie-folk, pop, rock, R&b, soul, and country group. Then these talented singers choose a song to perform head-to-head. And those platinum ticket holders Jay, HunterGirl, and Kenedi Anderson got to scout their competition from the comfort of the balcony seats high above. Although that wasn’t the only purpose (more on that below). Who impressed Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie enough to make it to the “Duets Challenge” round? Let’s unpack.

“I always enjoy those opportunities,” says Cook, who mentored in the past on the show’s pre-abc days and is always willing to assist up and coming artists. “It’s such a unique experience to go through. And maybe I can help some of these kids navigate it a little easier.”

“American Idol” top four finalist Casey Bishop made a bold move Sunday night, sitting down with mentor Finneas to take on Billie Eilish’s “Wish You Were Gay.” She rocked the song’s co-writer/producer, and the judges, too — yet, despite all that love, apparently not everyone wished she would stay.

Dressed in white, Bishop delivered an emotional version of the song that had the judges lavishing praise on the performance.

Haley Reinhart is celebrating what would have been David Bowie’s 74th birthday with the release of a powerful cover of one of his most iconic songs, “Heroes.”
Reinhart, who finished third on the 10th season of “American Idol” and became a viral sensation as the face of Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox with her cover of Radiohead’s “Creep,” kicks off the 1977 classic a capella, building the song to a triumphantly quiet finish with lush orchestration amidst a subtle arrangement highlighting her clear, emotive vocals.

Netflix’s favorite foul-mouthed family has returned with the new trailer for Season 4 of “F Is for Family.” The series, created by Bill Burr and Michael Price, has set up the arrival of a new bundle of joy for the Murphy’s and the arrival of Frank’s father William “Big Bill” Murphy (voiced by Jonathan Banks.)
As the first trailer shows, family patriarch Frank Murphy, voiced by Burr himself, is “still alive” and struggling not just with the new baby and the return of a father he hates. He also has to navigate three children in various states of becoming their own people. Oldest son Kevin (voiced by Justin Long) finds himself drawn to a girl with similar tastes as him; and youngest children Bill (voiced by Haley Reinhart) and Maureen (voiced by Debi Derryberry) find themselves trying to garner attention with the men in their lives.

The late producer-songwriter Busbee won his first Cma Award Wednesday night, as the primary producer of Maren Morris’ sophomore release, “Girl,” which picked up album of the year at the ceremony. Busbee, who died Sept. 29 at age 43, was saluted in the telecast first by Blake Shelton and then, later and more emotionally, by Morris, who continued to memorialize her mentor backstage.

With Season 17 of “American Idol” coming to a close on May 19 with Alejandro Aranda, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg as the final three, it has a good chance of being considered to be among one of the best seasons ever. But is it The best? That is yet to be determined. Certainly all three contestants have grown as vocalists and entertainers each and every week, especially on Sunday’s second-to-last show. But it is a little too early to see how No. 17 stacks ups with these four stellar seasons from the past.
America per saymay not have voted in our “best-ever” poll, but Gold Derby readers did — and 39% chose Season 8 when Kris Allen with his folky renditions of pop tunes somehow beat the versatile showman Adam Lambert. Of course, being the current front man for Queen is a different kind of win. I also don’t recall Allen being invited back on the show,...

“I don’t think either one of them appreciably stepped up their game,” says Gold Derby senior editor Susan Wloszczyna when reacting to the recent ousting of Dimitrius Graham and Uche on Season 17 of “American Idol.” She adds, “Dimitrius looked miserable! When you perform, you need to assume an emotion that is pleasant.” Wloszczyna joins fellow senior editor Marcus James Dixon and contributor Denton Davidson to discuss the recently revealed Top 8, the upcoming Queen music theme and whether or not judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie have assembled the best group of contestants ever.

“Have you guys ever heard this ‘Goofy’ song before?” Dixon asks about Uche’s decision to sing “I 2 I” from “A Goofy Movie.” “He’s in the mentor session with Rebel [Wilson]; she had never heard it,” Dixon continues.

The Doors’ Robby Krieger led a sultry rendition of “Back Door Man,” the blues standard that appeared on the band’s debut album, with vocalist-guitarist Orianthi and Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro at a guitar all-stars gig. As she sings, she alternates between declaring, “You’re my backdoor man” and “I’m your backdoor man,” claiming the sexuality that Howlin’ Wolf and Jim Morrison put into the song for herself. Krieger plays a slippery, melodic solo before passing it over to Navarro for a flashier, metal-tinged blues lead and...
