Updated, 12:50 Pm: Ishana Night Shyamalan’s debut film is on the move, again. And the new date is a familiar one. Two months after Warner Bros. shuffled The Watchers back by a week to the June 14-16 Fathers Day frame, the pic is headed back to its original June 7 date.
It’ll have some action-packed company that Friday, going against Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the long-gestating fourth film in the nearly 30-year-old franchise. Lionsgate’s The Crow remake also was set for June 7, but that pic flew away from the date about three weeks ago and now is set for August 23.
Warners Bros. is hoping to cater to a female audience with The Watchers.
Also opening wide on June 7 is Vertical Entertainment’s The Exorcism directed by Joshua John Miller.

Director Ishana Night Shyamalan’s (“Servant”) horror movie The Watchers is coming to theaters on June 14, 2024, and New Line Cinema has released a brand new trailer today.
This full trailer for The Watchers gives us a much better idea of what’s going on here, while still retaining the core mystery at the center of the film. All we really know is that there’s a building in the center of the woods that’s observed on a nightly basis by… someone. Or something.

CinemaCon 2024 is well underway and the latest film to be given the sneak peek treatment is Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu." The upcoming horror remake from the "Northman" director will star Bill Skarsgård as the titular vamp, alongside Lily Rose-Depp, Nicholas Hoult, and Willem Dafoe. Until now, there's been no footage from the film or trailers released, but after the Universal presentation at CinemaCon, that's all changed.
Following in the footsteps of Werner Herzog's 1979 effort "Nosferatu the Vampyre," Eggers' film will reinterpret F.W. Murnau's 1922 "Dracula" adaptation "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror." The director has promised a gothic horror movie that will actually scare audiences, which is exactly what we were hoping to hear. But the real test for "Nosferatu" will be whether it can succeed where so many modern vampire films have failed — namely, at the box office. Still, with Eggers at the helm, this surely won't be another "Last Voyage of the Demeter...

Charlize Theron’s portrayal of Imperator Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road is undeniably iconic. Theron famously shaved her head for the role, a bold move that visually emphasized Furiosa’s strength and determination. On X (formerly Twitter), Theron shared footage of herself shaving her head to get into character as Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road.

Willem Dafoe addresses comparisons between his role in Robert Eggers’ upcoming Nosferatu remake and his turn in 2000’s Shadow Of The Vampire.
It’s been just under a year since Willem Dafoe was announced as part of the ensemble for Robert Eggers’ upcoming remake of Nosferatu, the horror classic that unleashed an unofficial Dracula adaptation on cinema screens all the way back in 1922. Dafoe’s casting made a few waves at the time, partly because of his acclaimed previous work with Eggers. Dafoe has previously collaborated with the director on 2022’s The Northman and 2019’s The Lighthouse and both of those creative partnerships turned out very well indeed.
However, it wasn’t just a general outpouring of appreciation for a third collaboration between the pair that had the internet buzzing at the time. What was particularly noteworthy was that Dafoe had previously played the role of Nosferatu in the acclaimed 2000 indie film,...

The Exorcist sequel, The Exorcist: Believer, didn’t wow horror fans or critics in 2022. 20th Century Studios is hoping for a better reception for their The Omen prequel, The First Omen. When he released :a[The Witch]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/witch-review/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} in 2016, Robert Eggers proved himself as a filmmaker with an innate ability to chill your very bones. Conjuring up nightmare images, a suffocating sense of sheer dread, and a tone of Earthy naturalism that made his creation feel all-too-real, Eggers’ horror debut already looms large over the genre. And while his follow-ups :a[The Lighthouse]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/the-lighthouse/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} and :a[The Northman]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/the-northman/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} had their deeply unsettling moments, they weren’t full-blown horror movies. Rejoice exhibition, because some wide releases are keeping their dates on the theatrical film schedule next year, despite it being wrecked by the impact of the actors strike. Disney had April 5 on hold and that’s now being designated to 20th Century Studios’ psychological thriller The First Omen, the prequel to the classic 1976 horror film.
The original movie, a hit in its day, grossed more than $60 million at the domestic box office (unadjusted for inflation) and starred Gregory Peck, Lee Remick and Harvey Stephens, follows an American ambassador who believes his 5-year-old son is the Antichrist.
In this prequel directed by Arkasha Stevenson, a young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church. She encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.

If it looks like Alexander Skarsgård is having the time of his life playing Lukas Matsson, the swinging-dick tech mogul trying like hell to outmaneuver the Roy boys — while rocking a gold jacket and limited-edition kicks, no less — in Succession, it’s because he very much is.

Even before he started kicking the ball downfield as Jamie Tartt in the Emmy-winning "Ted Lasso," Phil Dunster was kicking around the film and television industry as a working actor. Dunster is one of those faces that you might have already seen in a minor role somewhere and forgotten before he gained more visibility in "Ted Lasso." Who remembers his 2017 appearance, for instance, in Kenneth Branagh's star-studded film adaptation of "Murder on the Orient Express," where he played the father of a girl named Daisy?
With "Ted Lasso" now midway through its third season on Apple TV+, and Nicolas Cage currently chewing scenery and veins in theaters in Universal's wacko Dracula movie "Renfield," the unlikely Venn diagram of vampire movie fans, Phil Dunster stans, and supporters of the fictional soccer football team AFC Richmond has perhaps never had more overlap. This year is turning out to be the year of the Vikings. Sure, Robert Eggers' "The Northman" and all its naked fight splendor came out in 2022, but this is the year when "Vinland Saga" finally returns to follow up its complex tale of revenge with a quieter and meditative second season set at a farm, and Netflix also gave us the second season of "Vikings: Valhalla," and all its sexy historical drama and bloody battles.
"Vikings: Valhalla" is, of course, the follow-up to the "Vikings" show that first aired on the History channel a decade ago and became very successful — despite the creator worrying "Vikings" wouldn't make it past season 1. It tells the story of the end of the Viking era, focusing on a variety of characters from different countries and walks of life, as they face the Nordic invasion of England and the rise of Christianity in the Viking world.

Writer/director Robert Eggers recently dipped his toes into period epic territory with “The Northman” but is returning to the world of horror/suspense with a remake of the classic silent vampire film “Nosferatu” that was originally helmed by German filmmaker F. W. Murnau back in 1921. A familiar face is expected to be joining the cast as a new report from Deadline has revealed Eggers is currently in talks with actor Willem Dafoe to take a role in the new horror drama from Focus Features that already boasts a cast that consists of Lily Rose-Depp, Bill Skarsgård, and Nicholas Hoult in main roles.

2022 was a year that Hollywood struggled to get audiences back in theaters, with many great films going unseen due to changing habits as a result of the pandemic. However, some films, including the year’s top grossing movie, Top Gun: Maverick and the indie breakout sensation, Everything Everywhere All At Once, broke that trend. In our year-end review, we take a look at the best movies of the year, highlighting hits and sleepers that are worth checking out.
1. Top Gun Maverick
If any movie came out this year that reminded us, as moviegoers, of the pure pleasure that could be gotten from a well-crafted piece of entertainment, Top Gun: Maverick was it. What’s fascinating about this film is that it’s now a front-runner for the Oscars, but clearly was made with no awards agenda whatsoever. It was the exact opposite of Oscar bait. For writer-director Robert Eggers, Focus Features’ The Northman really began when the filmmaker and his wife took a vacation to Iceland. “It was the first time I became interested in old Norse culture,” recalls Eggers. It was on that same trip that Eggers met singer-songwriter Björk (who has a small role in The Northman as the mysterious Seeress). She introduced the director to her frequent collaborator Sjón, the Icelandic poet, lyricist and screenwriter, who ultimately co-wrote the historical epic with Eggers. “The Northman was birthed on that trip,” he adds.
Starring Alexander Skarsgård, the film is a retelling of the Scandinavian legend of Amleth (which also inspired William Shakespeare’s Hamlet). After witnessing the murder of his father and kidnapping of his mother at the hands of his uncle, young Amleth escapes his home and vows to avenge his father. Many years later,...

This post contains spoilers for "Black Adam."
"Black Adam" has finally hit theaters after a 15-year journey. It's been a long road for Dwayne Johnson, who was, at one point, considered to take on the role of Shazam, the superhero to Black Adam's super-antihero. After all the years of Johnson talking about taking on this character (and changing the hierarchy of the DC Universe and so on), it's hard to imagine him as Billy Batson's alter ego, the child in a super-powered man's body. Once upon a time, though, that was on the table.
In November of 2007, it was revealed that Johnson would play Black Adam and not Shazam:
" And not Shazam but Black Adam, that's now very clear. He's a character that I can't wait to play. When they first approached me about playing Captain Marvel, they said there is also this interesting character too called Black Adam. This...

Four weeks ago, we heard that Infinity Pool, a new sci-fi thriller from director Brandon Cronenberg, the son of the legendary David Cronenberg, had been slapped with an Nc-17 by the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association. The reason given for that rating was “some graphic violence and sexual content”. The ratings announcement came with the note that the makers of Infinity Pool intend to appealed to the Classification and Rating Administration appeals board in an attempt to get the Nc-17 turned into an R. And apparently that appeal didn’t go their way, because it has now been announced that Infinity Pool was edited in order to receive an R rating.
The new rating announcement says that Infinity Pool was been rated R for “graphic violence, disturbing material, strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use and some language.” Which makes it sound even harsher than the Nc-17 cut.

Fire Island is primarily a retelling of Pride and Prejudice. In a similar vein to Clueless, the masterful modernization of another Jane Austen novel, Ahn and writer / co-lead Joel Kim Booster have updated the classic romance novel with a fresh twist.
Camera (David Cronenberg)
One of David Cronenberg’s most haunting projects contains nary an exploding head or freshly formed orifice. 2000’s Camera instead turns its smeary digital lens towards an aging thespian, his depressive musings compounded by the most rapid-fire tempo Cronenberg’s ever waged. A key part of the canon that’s nevertheless flown under-radar, and Le Cinéma Club present it, free, for one week as Crimes of the Future arrives. – Nick N.

Sunday Am Update: Focus Features’ Downton Abbey: A New Era is coming in at 16M, and while some might snipe that it’s lower than the first one’s robust 31M start, particularly against a production cost that’s double from the first at 40M, keep in mind this is a sequel to a period drama franchise, not Marvel.
For Focus, it’s their best opening during the pandemic, ahead of Northman‘s 12.3M start. By the way, New Era‘s opening is right where tracking spotted it earlier this week.
It stands to reason that grosses would wane, even in a healthy marketplace for this older adult IP, given how established it is. Rivals would say the first movie was capturing lightening in a bottle, arriving three years after the six season series ended. The sequel isn’t really selling a cliffhanger here which would create a stampede, i.

This article contains The Northman spoilers.
“To be or not to be.” That is a question which never occurs to Alexander Skarsgård’s Amleth in The Northman. He knows exactly what he’ll be next week. It’s the same thing as last week: a bloodthirsty Viking. Nevertheless, the character has much in common with William Shakespeare’s Danish prince, who famously uttered the above quote during a soliloquy in Act Three of Hamlet. And whether viewers are familiar with the Bard’s tragedy or not, that connection to Elsinore pervades throughout this weekend’s bare-chested epic.
“I felt if I’m doing Hamlet or The Lion King, I have a story that the audience knows already,” The Northman director Robert Eggers told Den of Geek Magazine. “So therefore I can really indulge in the world-building without confusing people.”
Indeed, there is something primordial about the storytelling in Eggers’ film.

Vikings don’t lack for precedent in the movies, yet the Old Norse boatmen have never quite taken hold in the collective filmgoer unconscious the same way as cowboys, pirates or mafiosi. The explanation may well be their inherent associations with paganism, cannibalism, rape and pillaging, traits understandably sanitized (if acknowledged at all) in late studio-era Viking narratives like Richard Fleischer’s The Vikings or Jack Cardiff’s The Long Ships. In 1984, Hrafn Gunnlaugsson—the supposed “bad boy” of Icelandic cinema—brought a pop-traditionalist sensibility to When The Raven Flies, which revisits Nordic mythology under the influence of spaghetti westerns, Kurosawa films and Dashiell Hammett’s Red Harvest. Gunnlaugsson’s stated aim was to make “the ultimate Viking movie”, and his trilogy deserves to be far better known; they are miniature epics, and the few outside of Scandinavia who know them probably have also heard them termed as “cod westerns.

There is no greater feeling when you go to see a movie for the first time without any expectations, and it blows you away or even changes your life entirely. And there is nothing worse when a movie that you have been anticipating for a long time turns out to be a huge disappointment. Crushed hopes are a bitter pill to swallow. In that regard, writer / director Robert Eggers with his gloomy and hypnotizing film The Witch, and goofy yet profound The Lighthouse, was a safe harbor for cinephiles who were always in a search for something original. Even after sleeping for only four hours and standing in a line for three more hours just to see The Lighthouse in Cannes in 2019, I knew that it was worth it (and it was). I hate to say the director's new endeavor The Northman falls victim to the same virtues that gained...

In a profile of Robert Eggers published in The New Yorker a couple of weeks before the release of The Northman, Sam Knight called the director’s latest “the most accurate Viking movie ever made.” The 38-year-old’s reputation as meticulous researcher long predates his Scandinavian saga, but the film’s estimated 90 million budget—a huge leap from the director’s first two features, The Witch (2015) and The Lighthouse (2019)—means that fastidiousness and attention to detail can now play out on a much larger and more ambitious scale. Co-written by Eggers with the Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón, The Northman borrows from the same Nordic legend Shakespeare drew from for his Hamlet. In Eggers’ retelling, Alexander Skarsgård plays Amleth, a prince on a revenge mission. As a ten-year-old (played by Oscar Novak), Amleth saw his father, King Aurvandil (Ethan Hawke), murdered by his uncle Fjölnir (Claes Bang), who then seized...
