If you’re into romantic novels, Jojo Moyes is a name that stands out. So, when one of her best-selling novels was adapted into a movie, it became a must-watch for romantic drama lovers. Me Before You was released around mid-2016 to mixed reviews and a lot of success. In an era when romantic dramas came with their clichés, Me Before You was able to smash box office records with 208.3 million on a budget of 20 million. The novel and film storyline may not be unique, but its delivery and cast made every minute worthwhile. Unlike most other romantic works

If the last letter you received from your lover was as banal as Augustine Frizzell’s new feature, you’d dump them like a shot. But mercifully for box office figures, we have all missed going to the movies so are inclined to be more open-minded towards snarky men spouting cliches and the women who love them. As long as their dramas play out on the big screen.
At first glance, The Last Letter from Your Lover is the bland, romance by numbers you find in large print novels on local library shelves or mildewing and neglected on a three for a fiver carousel in a caravan park shop. Safe and predictable with tick boxes for a neglectful hubby, Chanel suits, a caddish chap and foreign holibobs. However, this love story has been pepped up by the Soda Stream fizz of a parallel storyline to tickle your fancy when you...

This dual time period romance from Augustine Frizzell, adapted from the book by Jojo Moyes should appeal to romantics as it comes complete with not one but two will they/won’t they affairs but it does require some patience to start with before things get going.
Beginning in the Sixties, the early action involving husband and wife Jennifer and Lawrence Stirling (Shailene Woodley and Joe Alwyn) has the air of one of those Flake adverts from the 70s to start with, all gauzy photography and whispered conversation in burnished hallways. Thankfully, the modern time period is on hand to inject some energy when journalist Ellie (Felicity Jones relishing a lighter role than she often gets) discovers a love letter and, after a meet-cute with newspaper archivist Rory (Nabhaan Rizwan), decides to try to track down the owner.

Romance can be a tricky old thing to get right in film. One wrong move, a clumsy misstep, and suddenly it’s entered into the realm of cheese, and from there on, it can be difficult to win the audience back again. The Last Letter From Your Lover is an unapologetically romantic film. The letters sent between star-crossed lovers are so full of adoration, and sentiment. Yet the film never feels mawkish, and the tonality is a great triumph – and what we discussed with the film’s co-lead, Felicity Jones, and with the author of the original novel, Jojo Moyes.

The letters take the viewer back in time and we learn about Jennifer (Shailene Woodley) as she tries to piece back together her life after an accident wiped her memory. As Jennifer discovers the letters herself for the first time in the past, so does Ellie in the basement of a newspaper firm along with the help of a rule-following archivist Rory (Nabhaan Rizwan). The past isn’t just a different country, but a different movie entirely, in “The Last Letter From Your Lover,” a lushly mounted pair of love stories — one present, one past — that are faintly enmeshed but almost entirely disparate in tone, style and emotional impression. In the first, Shailene Woodley and Callum Turner fall hard for each other in an obstacle-strewn, 1960s-set romance of chance encounters, missed connections and moist-eyed rendezvous on railway platforms, channeling the vintage Hollywood melodrama of “An Affair to Remember.” In the second, Felicity Jones is a cut-glass hybrid of Carrie Bradshaw and Bridget Jones, falling only incidentally for the awkward archivist who assists her in piecing together the former story, before the narratives merge in a more British, neatly calligraphed rewrite of “The Notebook.”

‘The Last Letter from Your Lover’ Review: Jojo Moyes’ Time-Spanning Love Story Gets Lackluster Movie
You don’t have to be a sharp-edged journalist to see the obvious connection between the apparent heroines at the heart of Augustine Frizzell’s “The Last Letter from Your Lover,” including dull-edged journalist Ellie (Felicity Jones) and glamorous stifled ’60s housewife Jennifer (Shailene Woodley). Both women have been waylaid by love gone wrong, and can only hope to find true happiness by imagining — and then seizing — a new life for themselves.
It’s certainly a sweet concept for a novel, but one that never quite translates its disparate tones and stories into a cohesive cinematic experience.
But back to those different heroines. Split between two settings — and then, why not, one more — Frizzell’s film tracks the intersecting tales of Ellie and Jennifer, which are bound together by a series of wrenching love letters that captivate both of them. Jennifer was the recipient of those letters, but when we first meet her,...

The Last Letter from Your Lover, a Netflix adaptation of a 2012 Jojo Moyes novel, is pitched as a Russian doll of sweeping romances, a double punch of feeling for steamy summer nights in. The trailer practically gives the whole plot away – an awkward pair of journalists in the present fall for each other as they piece together an illicit love affair from the past through lost love letters, set to soaring music and the promise that “some love stories deserve a second chance”. The straightforward, unabashedly sentimental romance follows a string of middling original romantic comedies from the streaming service, from Set It Up to Always Be My Maybe.

Leave it to author JoJo Moyes to make us ugly-cry time and time again. Netflix's book-to-film adaptation of The Last Letter From Your Lover is a story of second chances and long-lost love. It also doesn't hurt that the historical romance film features a star-studded cast including Shailene Woodley, Joe Alwyn, Felicity Jones, Callum Turner, and Nabhaan Rizwan.
The film, and its novel counterpart, tells the emotional tale of two strangers who have an illicit affair through love letters and secret rendezvous, only to be ripped apart before their relationship ever gets a fair shot. Decades later, a reporter comes across the couple's letters and convinces her editor to run it as a story in the newspaper - but first, she'll have to put her journalistic skills to the test and track down these mystery lovers to get the full scoop. After a few relatively quiet months in the late spring and early summer, things are finally starting to heat up on Netflix, as the streaming giant complements its must-see TV lineup (“I Think You Should Leave!” “Too Hot to Handle: Brazil!”) with its most exciting original film project in a minute: Leigh Janiak’s “Fear Street Trilogy.” Beyond that, Netflix’s July slate is highlighted by the Karen Gillan/Michelle Yeoh action spectacle “Gunpowder Milkshake,” the star-studded Jojo Moyes adaptation “The Last Letter from Your Lover,” and a massive assortment of unseen international titles that run the gamut from Germany’s “Blood Red Sky” (about a plane hijacking interrupted by vampires) to Indonesia’s “A Perfect Fit”.
But since the majority of those new films have yet to be seen, library titles dominate our monthly list of Netflix’s best additions. It’s never a bad time to remind yourself...
