Sixty-four years late and right on time, Alice Childress’ wise and stirring backstage comedy-drama Trouble in Mind is making its long-in-coming Broadway debut tonight, and to describe the play as prescient would be an understatement. Uncanny rings truer.
With a star turn by Lachanze that takes a strong place in a theatrical season already formidable in its roster of performances, Trouble in Mind takes a behind-the-curtain look at the racism, coded prejudice, self-flattery, sexism and built-in bigotry that Broadway has always professed to eschew.
Childress, who died in 1994, knew better, and her insights fuel Trouble in Mind. First staged to acclaim Off Broadway in 1955, the play, about a Black actress in a big Broadway play who must choose between truth and security, was optioned by producers to open on Broadway in 1957 – if only Childress would write a more upbeat and forgiving ending. She chose truth.

A refugee finds solace in literature in Lamya’s Poem, a Syria-set, English-language feature which premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Written and directed by Alex Kronemer, it stars Millie Davis (Wonder) as the voice of Lamya, a spirited 12-year-old who lives with her mother in war-torn Syria in 2016. When her teacher lends her a book by 13th century poet Rumi (Aladdin‘s Mena Massoud), Lamya magically connects with the writer in 1221. He, too, is experiencing conflict, anger and doubts about his future, and a fantastical friendship develops between the pair of thoughtful, troubled youngsters.
Like Pan’s Labyrinth, this is an effective exploration of a child retreating into fantasy in stressful circumstances. “We live in one form in this world, and another in a timeless land,” goes one line of dialogue, which encapsulates the central idea.
Despite the paranormal flavor, the sense of threat feels very real in the 2016 scenes.

The kid cast of the PBS series “Odd Squad” is gearing up for its usual challenge, teaching kids about math and science. While the four new members of the team tape scenes in New York’s Central Park, however, a bigger threat looms.
Viewers of “Odd Squad” will not be all that familiar with Valentina Herrera, Jayce Alexander, Alyssa Hidalgo and Gavin MacIver-Wright when they take to the PBS Kids schedule sometime in 2020 for the third cycle of this popular kids’ program. Producers are betting fans of the program and others who have yet to sample it will embrace them quickly. A cast shake-up is not the norm for most series, but for “Odd Squad” it has fast become de rigueur.
Across kids’ TV, most favorites rarely change. Curious George looks almost the same now as he did when he debuted in 2006. The same is true for Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants.

Now are we fifth graders? Or are we sixth graders?!
While that beckoning battle cry is only uttered once, its intoxicating effect can be felt at every nonsensical turn in Good Boys, an hour-and-a-half long excuse to hear preteens curse without having to prepare any sort of punishment. The unofficial, perhaps surrogate prequel to Superbad, Gene Stupnitsky’s goofball big screen debut taps into a similar plight of pubescent confusion but sets the dial back a few more years.

Sometimes, a slight bait and switch is a good thing. You’d be forgiven for thinking that Good Boys was going to be nothing but utter filth. Sure, it’s a clear raunch fest, but that’s not the true tale of this film. They’re actually peddling a message here. Filthy as the humor is, it’s all tinged with childhood innocence and, believe it or not, a heart of pure gold. Tweens exist right at the intersection of childhood and the onset of adulthood, so this always had the potential to be funny. Well, it’s damn funny stuff, but actually has a heartwarming message about friendship to help make this far more than just a one trick pony. The film is a comedy about a trio of, you guessed it…good boys, even if they think they’re sometimes bad. Sixth graders Max (Jacob Tremblay), Lucas (Keith L. Williams...

Universal has released a second trailer for the comedy Good Boys, the feature directorial debut of writer / producer Gene Stupnitsky (screenwriter on Year One and Bad Teacher). This isn't a red band trailer (like the first one) this time, but it still has plenty of lewd language. Produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the comedy is about three sixth grade boys who ditch school and embark on an epic journey while carrying accidentally stolen drugs, being hunted by teenage girls, and trying to make their way home in time for their first kissing party. Just how bad can one day get? You'll have to head to theaters in August to find out. Starring Jacob Tremblay, Brady Noon, and Keith L. Williams as the three boys, with a cast including Molly Gordon, Lil Rel Howery, Millie Davis, Midori Francis, Lina Renna,...

Those who find joy in 11-year-olds dropping the F-bomb, and otherwise talking smack they really don’t understand, will be in hysterics for the full hour and a half of “Good Boys.” Anyone looking for a little more in the way of comic inspiration is likely to be disappointed by this mediocre comedy from director Gene Stupnitsky and co-writer Lee Eisenberg.
It’s billed as, “From the guys who brought you ‘Superbad,’ ‘Neighbors’ and ’Sausage Party’” — but those guys are the producers. While Eisenberg and Stupnitsky did both work on the U.S. version of “The Office,” their prior big-screen credits are limited to “Bad Teacher” and “Year One,” two movies even undiscriminating “Sausage Party” fans may not recall all that fondly.
A little too imitative of “Superbad,” with the minor tweaks of three (rather than two) even-younger male protagonists, more swearing, and a lot more drug references, “Good Boys...

Yesterday, another South by Southwest comedy dropped a Red Band Trailer, hot on the heels of the one for Booksmart. This time, it was for Good Boys, another SXSW debut. This comedic romp also got some really strong notices at SXSW, if not the out and out raves. Still, this appears to be rather hilarious looking, since it’s hard not to make small kids being bad funny. The laugh riot of a Trailer hit the web about 24 hours ago, and we’ll have it for you next. First though, let us discuss a bit and tease out the humor to be found within… The comedy is a raunchy junior high school set romp. According to IMDb, this is the plot synopsis: “Three sixth grade boys ditch school and embark on an epic journey while carrying accidentally stolen drugs, being hunted by teenage girls, and trying to make their way...

The company behind “Sesame Street” is willing to risk a few temper tantrums in its pursuit to expand.
Sesame Workshop is readying the launch of “Esme & Roy,” an animated series that will run on HBO and expand a partnership that has been in place since the At&T pay-cable service agreed to run the company’s flagship “Sesame Street” in 2015. The show centers on two “monster babysitters” – a young girl and her shaggier, yellow, horned counterpart – who help their young charges avert “monster meltdowns” while getting them to play games and take part in scheduled activities.
The series, which debuts 9:30 a.m. eastern August 18 on HBO, also serves to send a new signal that Sesame Workshop wants to broaden beyond Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch in the not-too-distant future.
“We are always going to be very boutique-y and selective, with a focus on quality as opposed to quantity,” says Steve Youngwood,...

Strong performances and shifting viewpoints steer the story of a disfigured boy overcoming bullying clear of mawkishness
Room’s Jacob Tremblay stars as Auggie, an unspeakably cute, indelibly clever 10-year-old with a facial disfigurement, in this adaptation of Rj Palacio’s 2012 novel. Homeschooled up until this point, his parents (Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson) decide to send him to middle school, where he is speedily eviscerated by a pack of pre-teen bullies led by smooth-talking trust fund kid Julian (Bryce Gheisar). It’s hard not to feel a lump rising in the throat when Auggie cries “Why do I have to be so ugly!”, in response to the casual cruelty of his classmates, who christen him “Barf Hideous” (an unfortunate pun on Star Wars’ Darth Sidious) on his first day. But writer-director Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) doesn’t spend too much time letting his squeaky-voiced hero wallow,...

It’s not every day that you get to talk to one of the most exciting rising stars in the industry. We caught up with Jacob Tremblay -- one of the youngest stars making waves in Hollywood -- when he was in Toronto recently to promote his new movie Wonder.
Jacob walked the blue carpet alongside his fellow young actress Millie Davis, as well as a group of young patients from Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. Jacob reveals how the inspiring stories of these real-life patients helped him with his performance as Auggie Pullman, a young boy with facial differences who begins public school for the first time.
Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts also star in Wonder as Auggie’s supportive and determined parents.

While another bruising company of costumed heroes makes the walls vibrate in stereo at many theatres (actually in most of the screens at your local multiplex), a quieter, more gentle film is opening to give families a nice alternative. And it stars real flesh and blood actors rather than computer-generated characters. It’s based on the rare young adult novel that’s not set in a dystopian future. The beloved five year-old book offers another take on a tale as old as time, with themes that echo the live Beauty And The Beast from earlier in the year. Add a dash of The Elephant Man, a pinch of The Phantom Of The Opera, a sprinkle of Mask, toss it in a middle school (maybe cooked in a classic “Easy Bake Oven”) and film goers should savor this sweet, nourishing cinema dish all about a most unusual boy, who despite his...

Based on the New York Times bestseller, Wonder tells the inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman. Born with facial differences that, up until now, have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, Auggie becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. As his family, his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to find their compassion and acceptance, Auggie’s extraordinary journey will unite them all and prove you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.
Wonder stars Academy Award® winner Julia Roberts (Best Actress, Erin Brockovich, 2000; August: Osage County, Pretty Woman), Academy Award® nominee Owen Wilson (Best Original Screenplay, The Royal Tenenbaums, 2001; The Grand Budapest Hotel, Midnight in Paris), and Jacob Tremblay. While They Live star and famous wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper sadly passed away last month, fans will still have the chance to see him onscreen in the short film Portal To Hell!!!

The film’s synopsis is as follows.
The superintendent hero of this primo slice of Canuxploitation already has enough on his plate, but then some jerks open up a multidimensional gateway in the basement. Thankfully, the guy standing between humanity and its certain destruction is played by the late, great “Rowdy” Roddy Piper.
This is not the first time Piper has been involved in a fight against beings from another dimension, as the 2010 film The Portal,...
