Paramount+ got a record-setting opening from its Sonic the Hedgehog-adjacent series Knuckles.
The six-episode series, featuring Idris Elba voicing the title character and also starring Adam Pally, amassed 4 million hours of viewing worldwide over its first three days of release — a record for a Paramount+ original series, the streamer says. (Paramount+’s announcement also marks a rare instance of publicly disclosing any viewing data for its programming.) Paramount+ has 71 million subscribers, parent company Paramount Global said in its first quarter earnings report.
With a running time of 169 minutes across all six episodes, Knuckles‘ 4 million hours of viewing equates to about 1.42 million complete showings (or “views,” in the widely accepted definition of the term for streaming shows) of the series in the opening weekend. For comparison’s sake, the No. 10 series in Netflix’s internal weekly rankings has averaged about 1.5 million views over a full week recently — a threshold Knuckles...

Sonic the Hedgehog is quite the asset for Paramount+.
The streamer debuted the six-episode limited series Knuckles on April 26, expanding the “Cinematic World of Sonic the Hedgehog” — and setting a streaming record in the process.
In its premiere weekend, Knuckles became the most-watched Paramount+ original series of all time with more than 4M hours streamed over that time frame. It’s also Paramount+’s most watched kids and family title ever.
Paramount+ rarely releases streaming data on its own accord, last touting the success of Lawmen: Bass Reeves. Just two episodes of that series amassed around 7.5M viewers globally in its first week on the platform. Of course, that also included a broadcast sampling run, which Knuckles did not receive.

“Knuckles,” the live-action/animated spinoff series currently streaming on Paramount+ and featuring the titular red Echidna warrior (voiced by Idris Elba), kicks things off with an amusing ’90s throwback opening title sequence. We encounter markered animations (done by Picturemill) of the main characters, as they jump across the labels of mixed CDs in a binder and roll by the credits, to the tune of “The Warrior” by Scandal featuring Patty Smyth.
It’s all part of Knuckles getting introduced to the “earth music” of his new protégé, dim-witted deputy sheriff Wade Whipples (Adam Pally), while trying to teach him the ways of Echidna-style fighting.

Taking place between the events of Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, Knuckles (Idris Elba) has a mammoth task on his hands while trying to settle into Earth’s ways. Deputy Sheriff Wade Whipple (Adam Pally) is being trained in the way of an Echidna warrior, but there’s a new villain on the scene — The Buyer (Rory McCann), a former lackey of Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carey) who seeks to obtain Knuckles’ power.
Perhaps there’s an argument to be made that all franchised movies should get a little TV teaser in between waiting for installments as a little treat for their patience. Knuckles is exactly that for fans of Sonic, effortlessly picking up where the events of Sonic 2 left off. It’s rare that a TV programme will begin by walking you through...

Sega and Paramount have made a Sonic The Hedgehog spin-off television series called Knuckles, here’s the trailer.
Sonic The Hedgehog is among the top selling video game franchises of all time. Launching on the Sega Mega Drive in 1991, the blue Hedgehog with super speed has graced countless video games, and after a failed attempt to make an animated film in the 1990s, he finally made a very successful leap to the big screen in 2020. Voiced by Ben Schwartz, it saw him go up against his arch nemesis Dr. Robotnik, played with maniacal relish by Jim Carrey. After being teased at the end of the first film, the 2022 sequel introduced Tails and Knuckles, voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey and Idris Elba.
News landed recently that the third film will see Carrey reprise his role, despite his previous assertion that he was retiring, with Krysten Ritter, Alyla Browne, James Wolk, Sofia Pernas,...

Buckle up, Sonic fans: your favourite echidna is back. After being introduced on the big screen in Sonic The Hedgehog 2, the Idris Elba-voiced Knuckles is returning in his very own spin-off show titled (you guessed it) Knuckles. The six-episode series will be coming to Paramount+, depicting the spiky-fisted friend of Sonic and Knuckles as he tries to train up Adam Pally’s Wade as an Echidna Warrior. As you can imagine, chaos ensues. Check out the trailer here:
The show is arriving in the not-too-distant future, and will bridge the gap between Sonic 2 and its upcoming threequel. It sees Jeff Fowler returns as director – having helmed both Sonic movies, and the incoming third film – and Sonic 2’s John Whittington is on writing duties. You've seen these super-powered critters save the world a time or two, but what America and the world at large really want to know is ... what do they do on their day off? Apparently, for alien heroes with a taste for battle, that involves makeshift gladiatorial arenas and a never-ending quest for vengeance. That's courtesy of the popular breakout character from "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," which featured Idris Elba's dulcet tones as the voice of Knuckles. Now, ahead of this year's release of the third "Sonic" film, everybody's favorite red echidna is getting his own spin-off series titled, fittingly enough, "Knuckles."
The much more serious-minded character was a natural choice to expand the "Sonic" universe in live-action, but Paramount threw everyone a curveball when it was announced that the "Knuckles" spinoff would take the form of a streaming series on Paramount+. But if it wasn't already clear before, it...

Even with the ongoing WGA strike grinding Hollywood to a halt, seemingly nothing can stop Paramount from moving forward with plans for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. According to the film industry-related website Production List, cameras will roll on the threequel in London on August 31, 2023.
While details about Sonic the Hedgehog 3 remain a mystery, the sequel will likely introduce more fan-favorite characters from the more-popular-than-you-would-ever-think franchise, including Shadow the Hedgehog, who Paramount teased during an after-credits scene for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. While Shadow is a known quality, Sonic fans hope the film series is planning to introduce more characters, including Amy Rose, Big the Cat, Rogue the Bat, Cream the Rabbit, Vector the Crocodile, and more. So far, there has yet to be a word if Jim Carrey will return to reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik.

For better or worse, the next big bet in Hollywood right now is video games. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is the biggest film of 2023 so far. "The Last of Us" earned strong reviews from television critics, although some game critics were more skeptical. Even the anime series "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" -- a spin-off of "Cyberpunk 2077" -- sniped anime of the year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
Leading the charge was 2020's "Sonic the Hedgehog," which survived terrible initial press to score the best opening weekend box office ever for a video game film at the time of its release. A committed performance by Jim Carrey helped, as did a Sonic redesign led by Tyson Hesse and a hard-working team of visual effects artists. Its sequel, "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," made even more money.
Next up we've "Knuckles," a Paramount+ television series featuring everybody's favorite grumpy echidna voiced by Idris Elba.

Exclusive: John Whittington has signed with Grandview.
Whittington co-wrote the mega-hit Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for Paramount with Jim Carrey starring and Original Film producing. The film broke the opening weekend record for video game adaptations set by its 2020 predecessor, earning 26.5 million on opening day.
Most recently, John co-wrote DC League of Super-Pets for Warner Animation Group, which debuted #1 at the box office over its opening week July 29th. He also wrote True Fan, which topped the Black List in 2015, based on the true story of baseball fan Steve Bartman who, after interfering with a foul ball during a playoff game, was tortured and stalked by die hard Chicago Cub fans for potentially costing them their first National League pennant since 1945. He also a key architect to the Lego movie universe, having co-wrote The Lego Ninjago Movie and The Lego Batman Movie, the latter of which grossed over $311M worldwide.

These are curious days for feature animation. Netflix scaled back its plans in the arena, while two years of releases straight to Disney+ during Covid and under Bob Chapek seem to have seriously devalued the once unstoppable Disney/Pixar animation empire. Universal, though, enjoyed one of the biggest hits ever with the near 1 billion juggernaut “Minions: The Rise of Gru” and also landed the year’s second-biggest animated release with “The Bad Guys.”
Still, animation at the box office and animation in the awards race are two very different things, and it’s unlikely that Academy voters will be checking the grosses as they review the 27 qualifying films in this year’s Best Animated Feature race at the Oscars.
Those 27 include movies from big, traditional studios like Disney/Pixar, Universal’s DreamWorks Animation, Warner Bros. and 20th Century (now part of Disney) – but also a handful of international productions from GKids,...

After settling in Green Hills, Sonic (voice of Ben Schwartz) is eager to prove that he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) returns with a new partner, Knuckles (voice of Idris Elba), in search of a mystical emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails (voice of Colleen O’Shaugnessy), and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.

An animated adventure containing both talking animals and popular superheroes was always going to be a big money-maker, and so it has proved with DC League of Super-Pets, which went straight to the top spot at the US box office this weekend. It’s easy to see why – written and directed by veterans of the Lego movies, the film delivers fun, fast-paced superhero action with knowing humour that caters to both adults and children alike.
The story centres on Krypto the Super-Dog (voiced by Dwayne Johnson), who came to Earth with baby Superman (John Krasinski) and now fights crime alongside his owner, as well as adopting the glasses-wearing secret identity of Bark Kent.

This is the story of Superman’s dog Krypto (voice of Dwayne Johnson) and his fear that he’ll lose his best friend Supes (John Krasinski) in anticipation of his engagement to Lois Lane (Olivia Wilde). This emotion gets put on the back burner when Lex Luther (Marc Maron) unleashes Orange Kryptonite to some unsuspecting shelter animals, and they all gain super powers. One of them, Lulu the Guinea Pig (Kate McKinnon), launches Luthor’s evil plan and manages to capture all of the Justice League. It’s up to Krypto, shelter dog Ace (Kevin Hart), Squirrel Chip (Diego Luna), Piggy Pb (Vanessa Bayer) and Turtle Merton (Natasha Lyonne) to save the day.

The summer continues to wind down faster than usual with the last of the major tentpoles (Thor: Love and Thunder) entering its fourth weekend and just two significant releases left (DC League of Super-Pets this weekend and Bullet Train next weekend). The overall box office risks falling under 100 million for the first time since May, though it may be able to stay above the nine-figure line for another two weeks before likely falling under until October, if not November. This is a disappointing sign after two months where the overall box office was doing a solid job of catching up to the pre-pandemic years.

The Rock, Kevin Hart and Kate McKinnon shine in this endearing spoof from the writers of the Lego Batman Movie
As superhero movies have grown more convoluted, self-serious and ludicrously expensive, it’s fallen to their animated counterparts to keep the multiverses grounded in actual fun. Think the unserious, self-referential madness of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse or The Lego Batman Movie, a zany, film-length jab at Batman’s relentless darkness, isolation and general emo-ness. DC League of Super-Pets, from Lego Batman writers Jared Stern and John Whittington, takes some similar lighthearted digs at Batman, but he’s a side character to the irresistible stars of the show: man’s best friend, plus some pals. Why can’t animals be super, too?
The 105-minute romp, directed by Stern and Sam Levine, shares with the Lego Batman Movie a deadpan sense of humor, frenetic action, reflexive winks for adults and cartoon harmlessness for kids.

If you’re the kind of superhero enthusiast who would like to ask, “Why so serious?” to the gloomy fanboys who live by Joker memes and other grim-and-gritty signifiers, “DC’s League of Super-Pets” is a goofy, colorful throwback to those comic books of the 1950s and ’60s that allowed no costumed avenger to go un-sidekick-ed.
While not as anarchic or outrageously hilarious as “Teen Titans Go! to the Movies,” this latest all-ages animated adventure from DC Comics and Warner Bros. nonetheless has — and offers — lots of fun with the four-legged counterparts of a Justice League that’s more “Super Friends” than Snyder Cut.

Paramount’s Sonic The Hedgehog 2 has crossed the 400M threshold at the global box office, including 190.6M from domestic and 209.5M internationally through Tuesday. It is currently the No. 8 film worldwide in 2022 and is likely to jump up a few notches as it still has Japan and Hong Kong to release. At Paramount’s CineEurope presentation today, a threequel was touted.
The little blue critter’s sequel initially got off to a fast-breaking early overseas start in late March and added markets over several months.
Its Top 5 offshore markets to date are the UK (34.3M), Mexico (22.1M), France (17.3M), Australia (16.6M) and Brazil (12M).
Domestically, Sonic 2 debuted in April with 71M, outstripping the three-day opening results of the 2020 original movie which had bowed over a holiday weekend.
The first film ultimately grossed 171M overseas and nearly 320M global, but also got its legs cut short as the Coronavirus crisis was just beginning.

This review was first published on March 28.
For a film engendered to milk nostalgia for a recognizable piece of intellectual property, 2020’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” had more personality in its cast and sardonic bite in its writing than most comparable productions adapted from classic cartoons or vintage video games.
The sequel, completed in record time after the pre-pandemic box-office success of the first installment, brings back its core creative team: director Jeff Fowler and writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller (with additional collaborator John Whittington this time around) for a similarly enjoyable cash cow with some welcomed, if far from revolutionary, idiosyncrasy.
Quill-covered hero Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) has found a home in Green Hills, Montana, with his human adoptive parents Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter). At night, however, he sneaks out to be a Batman-like vigilante without much success at helping people. Thematically, the crucible for...

Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the sequel to the last big blockbuster before the pandemic, opens this weekend, keeping a steady stream of dollars into the theatrical marketplace with an estimated opening of 50 million-plus, and possibly 60M.
The first movie in February 2020 broke the video game feature adaptation curse for the genre, opening to 58M over 3 days, 70M over four, and winning over die-hard fans of the Sega character. In landing a new franchise, Paramount wasn’t going to mess up the second time around and kept director Jeff Fowler on board as well screenwriters Pat Casey and John Miller, with the addition of John Whittington.
The increased stakes for the sequel come with the expansion of Sonic universe with characters Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba, and Tails, voiced by one of the video game’s iconic voiceover performers, Colleen O’Shaughnessey. That latter piece of casting goes a long way with Sonic devotees.

Well, that was fast. The first “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie opened in February 2020. In spite of — or maybe, in some strange way, because of — fan pushback to the live-action movie’s initial CG character design, it turned out to be far better than anyone expected (the bar is exasperatingly low for video game adaptations). The Blue Blur seemed to be racing toward some kind of box office record when the pandemic hit. Fast forward two years, and we already have a sequel, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” that takes what was endearing about the original — in a word, personality — and renders it generic in a hurry.

Casey and Miller are frequent collaborators, having penned the scripts for "National Lampoon Presents Dorm Daze," "Golan the Insatiable," and the...
