Winner of the Orient Express Award for Best Film at Fantasporto, “Kargo” is the second feature of T. M. Malones, and was initially screened in Cinemalaya last August.
Sara, a former stripper in Manila, moved to Maasin, Iloilo, where she was married and had a daughter with her husband, a lorry driver. Unfortunately, a road accident caused them both to die, shattering Sara's life, who succumbed to alcoholism, before she decided to take up her husband's job, in an effort to look for Jesus, the man who, in her mind, was responsible for her tragedy. The work is not easy at all, with her being constantly harassed by men, but eventually she meets a young girl and takes her under her protection. Her search for Jesus, however, continues.

Joseph Israel Laban is an award-winning Tagalog journalist, independent filmmaker, playwright, and a Fulbright Scholar. His films include “Antipo”, “Cuchera”, “Baconaua (Sea Serpent)” and “Nuwebe”. It was his first feature length film “Chucera” that brought him international recognition as described by TIFF film programmer Steve Gravestock “One of the most shocking debuts in recent Filipino cinema… Cuchera may turn out to be a watershed in Filipino film history — directly linking the melodramatic ferocity of the politically charged works of veteran directors like Joel Lamangan and Carlos Siguion-Reyna with the more intimate style of what some have dubbed the Filipino New Wave.”
His film “Sea Serpent” recently screened at Five Flavours Asian Film Festival, where we got a chance to ask him about the production, his inspirations and the current struggles facing the film industry in the Philippines.

Joseph Israel Laban's Cuchera, a rightfully shocking exposé of the lives of low-rent drug mules, one of the drug mules, opens with the obligatory and totally unnecessary factoid on how there are so many Filipino drug mules who are still rotting in jail in various countries. From the seemingly lofty implications of his advocacy-heavy introduction, Laban jumps into the middle of one of Manila's slums. His camera is attentive to the most damning of details, like a torn and discolored Philippine flag, the grime, the mud, the heaps and heaps of garbage and the shanties that dot the dump's perimeter. From the film's first few images, it becomes clear that Laban is not interested in subtlety, and probably rightly so. The intentions of the film...

The Toronto International Film Festival has lined up 25 features for its Discovery program. All the descriptions that follow are from the festival. Additional notes and more are on the way.
Pablo Giorgelli's Las Acacias. A truck driver has been charged with transporting a woman on the long journey from Paraguay's border to the city of Buenos Aires. He is totally unprepared for the extra passenger that will accompany them, the woman's infant daughter Jacinta, whose penetrating gaze eventually disarms his gruff exterior. Subtle and poignant, Giorgelli's 2011 Camera D'Or winner is a movingly beautiful road movie highlighted by stunning performances. (See the Cannes roundup.)
Tomás Lunák's Alois Nebel. Stories from the past and present converge at a small railway in Billy Potok, a tiny village on the Czech-Polish border. The local dispatcher, Alois Nebel, is a loner who prefers old timetables to people and has hallucinations of trains passing...
