Prime Video has released first-look images of the long-awaited Lulu Wang’s limited series Expats set to be released in early 2024. The world premiere screening of its feature-length penultimate episode will take place at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8.
The 6-part limited series, based on the internationally best-selling novel The Expatriates, by Janice Y. K. Lee, stars Nicole Kidman, Ji-young Yoo, Sarayu Blue, Brian Tee and Jack Huston.
Set against the vibrant and tumultuous tapestry of 2014 Hong Kong, Expats centers on three American women—Margaret (Kidman), Hilary (Blue), and Mercy (Yoo)—whose lives intersect after a sudden family tragedy. The series interrogates privilege and explores what happens when the line between victimhood and culpability becomes blurred. Tee plays Margaret’s husband Clarke and Huston plays Hilary’s husband David.
Wang serves as a creator, director and writer for Expats. She also executive produces the series with Daniele Melia for Local Time.

Editors note: Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series debuts and celebrates the scripts of films that will factor in this year’s movie awards races.
Bones and All is the acclaimed cannibal romance reteaming Luca Guadagnino and Timothée Chalamet following their work together on the Sundance breakout Call Me by Your Name.
The MGM film written by Guadagnino’s regular collaborator David Kajganich —who’d previously penned his features Bigger Splash and Suspiria — is based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Camille DeAngelis. It tells the story of Maren (Taylor Russell), a young woman in 1980s Virginia who leans into her cannibalistic urges after striking up a relationship with the nomadic “eater,” Lee (Chalamet).
Guadagnino told Deadline in a recent edition of the Crew Call podcast that when he first read Kajganich’s script, he didn’t view it as a work of “horror” — instead gravitating towards its...

Suspiria remake (watch it Here) director Luca Guadagnino’s horror film / cannibal love story Bones and All has received good reviews – it’s sitting at 82 positive on Rotten Tomatoes, and our own JimmyO gave the film an 8/10 review you can read at This Link. But it’s not the sort of movie that was ever going to set the box office on fire, and it has pulled in just 11 million during its three weeks of release. So it’s no surprise that United Artists will be sending the movie to PVOD on December 13th.
Bones and All is in good company, as IndieWire reports that major awards season contenders The Banshees of Inisherin and The Fabelmans (a box office failure directed by Steven Spielberg) will also be reaching PVOD on the same date.

[Editor’s note: The following story contains spoilers for “Bones and All.”]
When David Kajganich was first presented with Camille DeAngelis’ novel “Bones and All,” the screenwriter didn’t initially realize the cannibal romance was intended for YA readers. Instead, the “Blood Creek” and “A Bigger Splash” writer was taken with the book’s fairytale quality, the wonderful romance at its heart, and its ability to interrogate “other”-ness in an entirely new way.
It was also, of course, fairly juicy — literally and figuratively — and ripe for the screenwriter to apply his own ideas. It helped that Kajganich’s frequent collaborator, director Luca Guadagnino, came on board to direct the film, bringing along stars Taylor Russell and Timothée Chalamet to play the love-crossed young cannibals at its center. After debuting at Venice, earning accolades on the festival circuit, and enjoying a very tasty opening weekend in limited release, “Bones and All” arrives in wide release this week.

Luca Guadagnino is still hoping for a “Call Me By Your Name” sequel with the original cast of characters — and possibly the original cast as well.
Director Guadagnino has voiced his desire for a follow-up film about the affair between Oliver (Hammer) and Elio (Timothée Chalamet). “Call Me By Your Name” premiered at 2017 Sundance and went on to land four Oscar nominations, including a Best Adapted Screenplay win.
“I would love to make a second and third and fourth chapter of all my movies,” Guadagnino said in a Variety cover story. “Why? Because I truly love the actors I work with, so I want to repeat the joy of doing what we did together.”
Yet a possible sequel was shelved after a series of abuse allegations against Hammer went public in 2021.

Update: It looks like United Artists/MGM have decided to capitalize on Bones and All’s successful Fantastic Fest screening with a new extended trailer. While it does feature a little more gore, it comes with a Spoiler Warning caveat. Some Fantastic Fest attendees are calling the trailer out on Twitter for ruining too many of the film’s big moments – so keep that in mind before you check it out. Luca Guadagnino is calling B.S. on any “Bones and All” ties to real-life controversy.
After former “Call Me By Your Name” collaborator Armie Hammer was revealed to have sent cannibalistic messages and was accused of abuse, Guadagnino shut down any tie between cannibal love story “Bones and All” and Hammer’s real-life controversies.
“David Kajganich and Theresa Park, the writer and one of our producers, have been working on ‘Bones and All’ since the book was released [in 2015]. Many years ago, probably around the time when we were shooting ‘Call Me by Your Name,'” Guadagnino explained during a masterclass presentation at the Zurich Film Festival (via Variety).
Guadagnino continued, “It was to be directed by my great colleague Antonio Campos, but he decided not to go for it. That’s when they gave me the script. Any correlation with this kind of innuendo and silliness is preposterous.”

All my movies are about outcasts, and the characters in Bones and All resonated with me,” said director Guadagnino. “In that regard, it’s also interesting to me to tackle texture-wise the mid-West in the 80s. Mark Rylance plays a decidedly creepy oddball in the official trailer for Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All, which was dropped on Thursday by MGM.
“You look like the kind that’s convinced themselves he’s got this under his thumb,” Sully, Rylance’s character, at one point tells cannibal drifter Lee, played by Timothée Chalamet, as he joins Maren (Taylor Russell) on a cross-country odyssey to understand why she has to kill and eat the people that love her.
“But you pull on one little thread and already…” Sully adds during a campfire chat amid jump cuts of Lee choking and chopping up people as blood flows and a version of Leonard Cohen’s “You Want It Darker” song plays in the background.

Becoming Nicholas Sparks’ literary agent and then film production president might not seem like the best preparation for making a romantic drama about cannibalism, but Per Capita Prods. founder Theresa Park is transitioning to a wider, edgier range of projects with ease.
Park is producing an animated children’s show based on Michael Buckley’s bestselling fantasy novel series “The Sisters Grimm” for Apple TV+. And she arrives in Venice for the Sept. 2 world premiere of “Bones and All,” Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of Camille DeAngelis’s novel about a couple (Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell) whose tastes run more towards hand eating than the hand holding found in Sparks’ works. The MGM/UA feature follows two other offbeat projects in Per Capita’s first year of releases: A24’s robot drama “After Yang” starring Colin Farrell and the Apple TV+ female-centered series “Roar” with Nicole Kidman.

Exclusive: Two months into their run as Warner Bros Pictures Group Co-Chairs and CEOs, Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, have hammered out a multi-year deal to handle the international distribution of MGM’s theatrical titles, commencing with Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All in November and continuing with the 2023 slate and beyond; the second title under the pact being Creed III in March.
The deal, which De Luca and Abdy worked out with MGM COO Christopher Brearton, will deliver a great deal of incremental revenue to Warner Bros. I hear the terms are three years with an option for two and encompasses the theatrical distribution of MGM titles outside of the U.S. including China. The new agreement also includes worldwide physical home entertainment distribution on all newly released MGM titles. MGM and Warner Bros. Picture Group will team on marketing/advertising, publicity, film distribution and exhibitor relations on...
