What makes a character in a film appealing to watch? Morris (Charles Boyland) laughs at Eula (Chantelle Han) for her tight leather trousers, which suggest that she thinks she’s in a different kind of movie. If her aim is to trade on simple sex appeal then the camera is, for the most part, not playing along. Intelligence can be appealing, but neither of these two has much of it, due to their really badly thought-out plan to steal valuable truffles from a trigger-happy former military man out in the middle of nowhere. What about plain old likeability? That’s not easy either when Eula is constantly snapping at Morris. But by the end of this film you’ll be rooting for her nonetheless, as she shows a level of sheer determination which puts her in the league of of Smilla or Jackie Brown, heroism in its purest form.

Following her grandfather’s death, Eula (Chantelle Han) has tried reopening his old restaurant before the pandemic threw those plans for a loop, leaving her struggling for rent amidst discovering her pregnancy. With the acquisition of her grandfather’s war medals, Eula forms a plan with her friend Morris (Charles Boyland) to solve those financial woes. Under the guise of gifting the medals to her grandfather’s friend, Captain Reuben (Michael Copeman), the pair visit the reclusive veteran’s home intending to steal a priceless truffle in his possession.
After receiving directions from a fishmonger who acts as a harbinger of doom, the pair find their vehicle stuck in the pitch-black woods until morning. After hearing strange noises outside, they encounter Reuben and his massive truffle-hunting pig. The veteran guides them into his expansive property,...

Honestly, I was going to pass on Peppergrass… The plot description sounded like another home invaders find out that what’s inside is more dangerous than they are story. And that’s something I’d seen many times before, The People Under the Stairs, Nefarious, Killers Within and, of course, Don’t Breathe. But then it was announced that Black Fawn had picked it up for distribution and I got curious. As it turned out it wasn’t what the description made it sound like, but was that a change for the better?
Eula Baek is getting desperate. Not only is she pregnant, Covid lockdown has killed off most of the business for her café Peppergrass. It hasn’t done Morris’ bar any favours either.
So, rather than apply for...

"Give us the white one!" Black Fawn Distribution has unveiled an official trailer for an indie thriller titled Peppergrass, yet another truffle film to compliment the outstanding Pig from earlier in the year. But this one looks like a much darker thriller, and it's telling the story from the perspective of the thieves, not the truffle hunter. It's premiering soon at the Blood In The Snow Film Fest up in Canada. During a pandemic, a pregnant restaurateur tries to rob a priceless truffle from a reclusive veteran. There's a big ol' truffle pig that makes an appearance at the end of this trailer. Starring Chantelle Han, Charles Boyland, Michael Copeman, Philip Williams, and Craig Porritt. I'm wondering if Peppergrasss is the name of his truffle pig, or maybe their restaurant? I can't figure out exactly what that title means from this trailer. Check it out. Here's the official trailer (+ poster...
