Harlem is a vibrant and multicultural community, so it's fitting that the cast of Harlem matches that same energy. Some criticism of the Amazon Prime series drew from the fact that none of the four leading actors are members of that community. While Shoniqua Shandai was born in New York City, she was raised in Richmond, Virginia. However, there are cast members on Harlem that have strong ties to the New York City borough, including: Harlem native Bevy Smith (Aunt Tammy), longtime Washington Heights resident Jasmine Guy (Patricia), and Bronx natives Juani Feliz (Isabela) and Kadeem Ali Harris (Brandon). Popsugar caught up with Bevy, Jasmine, and Juani at the Harlem premiere at the Magic Johnson Theatre in Harlem to discuss what the neighborhood means to them. We also spoke to Robert Ri'chard and Juani about how Amazon integrated the series with Harlem.

In this social media age, experiential events have become a crucial part of entertainment marketing plans. Instagram-friendly pop-ups had become common in recent years — Netflix turning a Baskin-Robbins location into the Scoops Ahoy ice cream parlor from “Stranger Things” or Amazon Prime Video taking over the Hollywood Athletic Club to promote its Emmy contenders, for example.
But then came the pandemic. And marketers were forced to quickly pivot to safe, socially distanced events like drive-in premieres and virtual events such as online watch parties. But as vaccination rates continue to rise, marketers are aiming to balance those digital experiences with more in-person encounters.
Prime Video, for example, plans to promote its new series “Harlem” at the historic Harlem Parish, a New York City church-turned-event space, starting Dec. 3 with festivities dubbed “Harlem Ever After.” For the event, which highlights Black female creators and entrepreneurs, Prime Video is turning the Parish...

After 12 episodes of “Project Runway All Stars” season 6, the show is down to its 3 finalists: Fabio Costa, Stanley Hudson and Anthony Williams. But what about the 13 contestants who came and went along the way? Our readers didn’t see eye-to-eye with the judges about multiple eliminations, so if they had their say we might have ended up with quite a different finale lineup. Which eliminated contestant would you most like to bring back to the show? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
The elimination that shocked “Runway” fans the most was arguably Amanda Valentine, who according to our early polling was the front-runner to win the entire season. She went out in 11th place in “Fashion’s New Superheroes,” and an overwhelming majority of our readers thought the judges made the wrong call. For the first time in “Project Runway” history — including both “All Stars” and the original series — the final five designers are all men: Edmond Newton, Fabio Costa, Anthony Williams, Stanley Hudson and Ken Laurence. That was a statistically improbable outcome given that women outnumbered men nine-to-seven at the start of the season. The only men eliminated were Carlos Casanova and Joshua McKinley. So we asked our readers what they thought of the lopsided victory for the male designers. Did the judges get it right, or did the women deserve better? Scroll down for our complete poll results at the bottom of this post.
Our respondents actually thought the judges did a good job picking the final five. A slight majority (53%) said the remaining designers really are the best of the best. That’s a little surprising given how passionately our readers have disagreed with some eliminations, including Amanda Valentine and Helen Castillo.

“Project Runway All Stars” eliminated Helen Castillo in Thursday night’s episode, “Rock Your Face Off.” That leaves five designers in the competition: Fabio Costa, Stanley Hudson, Ken Laurence, Edmond Newton and Anthony Williams. All five of them are men, which is not only unusual but historic. This is the first time one gender has swept the top five in the history of “Runway” — not just the 6 seasons of “All Stars,” but also the 16 seasons of the original series.
It’s all the more surprising in this season of “All Stars” because the women actually started out with the numbers advantage. There were an even 16 contestants at the start of the competition, but 9 were women while only 7 were men. However, over the course of the last 10 episodes all 9 women were eliminated compared to only 2 men who suffered the same fate. Carlos Casanova was booted in the season premiere, and then...

Joshua McKinley was eliminated from “Project Runway All Stars” in “Posen on the Red Carpet,” and it proved to be one of the rare instances this season when the judges and our readers were on the same page. We asked “Runway” fans who really deserved to be sent home, and 60% of them said the judges made the right call by dismissing McKinley. Scroll down to see our complete poll results.
McKinley flew under the radar this season until “Thrown for a Loop by Betty Boop,” which was the first challenge where he received any critique from the judges at all — and he won. Though many of our readers thought his provocative design was a curious choice for the victory. The very next week, in “A Kick in the Astro,” he got his very first low score of the season, and he responded defensively to the judges’ criticisms. But he was spared,...

As of this writing “Project Runway All Stars” season 6 is down to its top 6 designers, whittled down from 16 after nine episodes of challenges where the panel of judges have knocked out the unsuccessful fashion hopefuls one by one. But what do you think of the judges themselves? Scroll down to vote in our poll.
Actress Alyssa Milano has hosted the show since season three in addition to serving as a judge. She evaluates the designs every week alongside famous fashion designers Isaac Mizrahi and Georgina Chapman, who have been with “All Stars” from the very beginning. But despite their professional expertise our readers have objected to many of the decisions they have made on the way to the top six.

Our readers have been at odds with the judges for a while this season on “Project Runway All Stars,” objecting to many of the recent eliminations like Amanda Valentine, Char Glover and Kimberly Goldson. But when the judges decided to send home Merline Labissiere in “Mizrahi Madness” our readers agreed. Scroll down for the complete poll results at the bottom of this post.
Labissiere was the right choice for elimination according to almost three-quarters of “Runway” fans who voted in our poll (74%). Judge Isaac Mizrahi, whose own artwork and designs inspired the challenge, said Labissiere’s architectural look “didn’t come across,” and Alyssa Milano thought it was forced. It wasn’t all bad, though. Guest judge Carmen Dell’Orefice said, “There was something in the back [of the design] that told me she has design in her.” And Georgina Chapman gave her credit “for giving us an intention and pushing the boundaries.

Helen Castillo is the last woman standing in season six of “Project Runway All Stars.” Is there a chance she could win the whole competition, or is she doomed to be eliminated just like every other woman on the show?
The season started with 16 contestants: 9 women and 7 men. After 8 episodes the show is down to 1 woman and 6 men. Carlos Casanova was eliminated in the season premiere episode, but then the women were picked off one-by-one: Kelly Dempsey in “Damsels in Distress,” then Ari South and Melissa Fleis in “Perfect Pairings,” Candice Cuoco in “Balls Out,” Amanda Valentine in “Fashion’s New Superheroes,” Char Glover in “Thrown for a Loop by Betty Boop,” Kimberly Goldson in “A Kick in the Astro” and Merline Labissiere in “Mizrahi Madness.”

Is Ken Laurence in trouble on “Project Runway All Stars” season six? That’s what our users think. Every week we poll “Runway” fans to predict who will win the competition, who will be sent home, and more. And based on their combined forecasts Laurence is in trouble. As of this writing he gets leading odds of 7/4, which translates to a 36.06% chance of being eliminated. But could he really be on the chopping block after weeks of successful designs? Just ask Kimberly Goldson.
Goldson was eliminated in the avant garde challenge “A Kick in the Astro” even though she had never gotten a low score from the judges before then. Similarly, Laurence has demonstrated consistent design skill. Though he received a low score from the judges in the season premiere episode, he has won their approval every week since, including a joint challenge win with Fabio Costa in episode three,...

Anthony Williams is starting to look unstoppable in season six of “Project Runway All Stars.” Based on the combined predictions of the “Runway” fans we poll every week, Williams gets leading odds of 21/20 to win the season. And since consistency is key in this design competition, it gives Williams a crucial leg up that he’s the last contestant remaining who hasn’t received a single low score from the judges.
Going into the most recent episode, “A Kick in the Astro,” Williams hadn’t designed a single look that put him in the judges’ bottom three, and neither had his rivals Joshua McKinley, Fabio Costa or Kimberly Goldson. But that avant garde challenge changed that completely. Goldson was eliminated, while McKinley and Costa joined her among the judges’ least favorite looks. The judges made another controversial call on “Project Runway All Stars.” Episode seven, “A Kick in the Astro,” was an avant garde challenge in which the designers had to unleash their wildest artistic impulses inspired by the cosmos. Kimberly Goldson struggled to come up with ideas as avant garde fashion was outside of her comfort zone. And according to the judges Joshua McKinley struggled with too many ideas. It came down to the two of them for elimination. The judges picked Goldson to go home, but our readers would have picked McKinley. Another one bites the dust — and by that I mean, yet another woman is eliminated on “Project Runway All Stars,” the seventh in a row out of eight eliminations thus far. Kimberly Goldson was eliminated from the show in episode seven, “A Kick in the Astro,” even though it was the first time she had even gotten a low score from the judges. She actually got high scores in “Perfect Pairings” and “Balls Out.” So did she really deserve to be sent home in this avant garde challenge? Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know.

Two weeks after the elimination of Char Glover from “Project Runway All Stars” in the unique, cartoon-inspired challenge “Thrown for a Loop by Betty Boop,” the fashion design spin-off returned with its seventh episode of season six, “A Kick in the Astro.” And if the designers thought their distressed challenge and unconventional-materials challenge were tough, this time around they had to go for broke and unleash their unbridled creativity in an avant garde challenge judged by guest stars RuPaul Charles and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Season six of “Project Runway All Stars” is ostensibly a battle between veterans who have appeared on “All Stars” before and rookies who are competing in this spin-off series for the first time. However, after five weeks of competition we’ve seen a different competitive split: between men and women. And it’s not looking good for the women so far. The female designers have been dropping like flies.
The season started with 16 designers overall: 7 men and 9 women. But the early results have been lopsided. Five out of six eliminations thus far have been women, while five of the six design challenge winners have been men. At least one of those eliminations was a surprise: Amanda Valentine was the front-runner to win the competition according to our racetrack odds going into “Fashion’s New Superheroes,” but she was eliminated, which 93% of our readers disagreed with. Last night was the Season Finale of Project Runway, and as soon as it was over, I couldn't help but take to Twitter to squawk.
I'm going to try to refrain, but I'm not making any promises.
Let's face it ... this season stunk.
Well, there were a few bright spots.
We got to know the extremely likable and charismatic Anthony, as well as the alien cipher Olivier. Bert had an interesting backstory, and on every episode we learned that Josh's mother died.
What else? Umm ... Oh, remember that time Kim got scared of the roach and jumped on the table? That was pretty funny ...
Okay, I admit it. I'm stalling so I don't have to talk about what happened on the finale. But we may as well get it over with.
So the four finalists hit Fashion Week, and showed their designs. So how did each one fare? Let's find out.

Beauty queen Anya Ayoung-Chee can add another title to her list of accomplishments. The former Miss Trinidad and Tobago was named the winner of "Project Runway" Season 9, beating out finalists Joshua McKinley , Viktor Luna , and Kimberly Goldson . Anya came into the competition with the a great eye but one huge disadvantage: she only had been sewing for four months. She proved to be a resourceful competitor challenge after challenge. Her most impressive win (aside from Thursday night's) came midseason, when she lost her fabric money and had to use change and leftover scraps to pull together a '70s-inspired look. Anya's final collection was Caribbean chic, flowly and feminine (see her winning collection above). Judges Heidi Klum , Michael Kors , Nina Garcia , and L'Wren Scott praised her eye for beautiful prints but said it was one-note (as we had correctly predicted ). Despite this, the judges admired her consistent point of view...

His final collection may lack the colors of his competitors, but is still bold. His mirror image prints (inspired from Mexico) create a gorgeous Rosarch effect. Project Runway's remaining four designers began the penultimate episode of the season with a $$9,000 budget and just five weeks to collect a ten-piece collection. Tim Gunn spent the episode visiting each of the designers at their individual homes to check in on their progress. First up was Kimberly Goldson in White Plains, MD, who is inspired by the pre-gentrified Brooklyn of her childhood. She wants her collection to "elevate" the Brooklyn girl in the way that she elevated herself. Tim thinks it's all very "her" but advises her to take some risks and wow the judges. Next up for Tim is a trip to Maraval in Trinidad to visit Anya Ayoung-Chee, who has been inspired by scuba diving and the ocean. She's a bit nervous though because she's only got the fabrics sorted rather than any items made - and, as expected, Tim advises (more)...

Last night was part one of the finale show on Project Runway, which means it's the episode that's completely unnecessary.
The only interesting part of these penultimate episodes is when Tim visits the finalists in their homes, but that could be easily incorporated into the real finale.
And after 90 minutes of hearing Heidi say , "One of you will be out, One of you will be out, one of you will be out," guess what? No one is out.
So what was the point?
As soon as Kimberly was chosen as the third designer, I knew they were gonna pull the "Oh, you're all so fabulous, we decided everyone goes on" trick, and sure enough, Anya was spared.
Ugh. Anyway, let's a look at each designer, and what they had to offer the judges this week.
Viktor Luna

New York -- Fashion Week and TV came together Friday (Sept. 9) at Lincoln Center for "Project Runway's" finale, with nine designers presenting their collections, ranging from the elegant to the strange.
Though no one theme ruled the runway, the event featured an abundance of flowing clothes; some accessorized with blue wrists and gladiator cuff bracelets. Metallic dresses and shorts remain popular as do completely sheer tops. Apparently, for now, bras and camisoles are out.
"We have been very tough on them, especially me, so I have learned," host and "Project Runway" judge Heidi Klum -- stunning in a backless, black sequined halter and pants -- says of this season's assortment of contestants.
Up first was Laura Kathleen. Like many of the designers, she mentions how seeing her creations on the catwalk is a lifelong ambition.
"I've been dreaming about this moment since I was 13," Kathleen says, explaining that her collection is for "everyday women.

"America's Next Top Model" has been criticized for not creating supermodels, but it does create working ones! Two former winners -- Jaslene Gonzalez of Cycle 8 and Teyona Anderson of Cycle 12 -- have already walked at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Gonzalez donned yellow lipstick and sportswear for the Origami fashion show, but the following night looked stunning in a black jumpsuit. Anderson walked for designer Kimberly Goldson during the "Project Runway" show. Click on the "Launch Gallery" to see the photos: Natasha Galkina , runner-up to Gonzalez in Cycle 8, also walked in the "Project Runway" show. Tyra Banks would be proud! Other former "Top Model" contestants haven't been so successful. Tyra's pulled together 14 fan favorites for an "All-Star" edition of "Top Model," debuting this fall. Check out their photos below: And be sure to watch Tyra's ridiculous, over-the-top promo for the upcoming season: She's such a drama queen! Read more...

Jennifer Love Hewitt, Malin Akerman & More Stars Step Out For ‘Project Runway’ Season 9 Finale Show!
The finalists of ‘Project Runway’ prepared for the biggest moment of their careers this afternoon. Lucky for them, tons of supportive stars stepped out to watch these up-and-coming designers present their amazing spring collections!
Jennifer Love Hewitt, Malin Akerman and Heidi Klum are among of the few A-listers who sat front row at the show.
Heidi looked stunning, donning a black-sequins jumpsuit as she judged the season 9 finale of Project Runway.
But the real stars were the designers who have been competing all year to win Project Runway. Anya Ayoung-Chee rocked the stage showing off an array of wild prints inspired by her Spanish hometown, Port-of-Spain the capital of Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
Finalist Olivier Green‘s collection was very futuristic — along with her models! And Bert Keeter‘s collection was very chic and sleek!
But overall Kimberly Goldson‘s clothes were a crowd’s favorite. Her collection was...

Season Nine of Project Runway is well underway, and after five episodes, there are still five members of Team Gay left.
Because the early going is basically just whittling down the cast to a reasonable number, we're going to eschew a regular recap and just focus on the highlights. (And many thanks to Ae reader Miz Liz for continuing the recaps in the forums while we were taking a sabbatical).
Seen And Not Heard
This week's competition involves working with children. *shudder* But wait! These aren't ordinary kids, they're art students, so the annoyance level is at a reasonable decibel. The kids create a painting for each designer, and that designer has to use the painting to create something avant-garde for the runway. I was crushed that they didn't have to literally use the painting. I would've given anything to see the models try to navigate the runway with their heads poking through.

Pet Project
This week's competition takes the designers to a pet store, where Tim Gunn tells them that this is one of Project Runway's "unconventional challenges." Wait, aren't most of them? The have to design an outfit made entirely of pet products, but makes a point again that it should be "unconventional," something that one poor Mormon boy should've listened to.
Honey Badger Don't Give A Sh*T
Bert Keeter became an instant audience favorite with his win last week, but apparently he believes that "immunity" means "i'll just take this challenge off." He was shockingly apathetic, and even admitted as much.

"Project Runway" Season 9 kicks off Thursday (July 28) night and we already have some of our early favorites.
Normal.dotm 0 0 1 26 151 Blush Glamour 1 1 185 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false
Kimberly Goldson from Brooklyn, N.Y. She says her customer is a woman who is "urban but likes to be glammed up." The yellow trousers in her audition collection are to die for.
Why she's a standout: Her clothes are fun and she knows exactly who she is designing for. We hope she stays true to her esthetic, because we love it.
Normal.dotm 0 0 1 39 225 Blush Glamour 1 1 276 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false
Anya Ayoung-Chee a former Miss Trinidad and Tobago. She designed all her own clothes for the Miss Universe Pageant. Though she admits she only learned to sew to be on the show. Heidi likes her enough to give her a chance. Tim, on the other hand, is horrified.
Why she's a standout: Simple: raw talent.
