A couple of weeks ago in “Like Totally ’90s,” the “Project Runway” season 20 All-Star designers were expressly prohibited from using denim in their throwback looks. Little did they know that denim would be the name of the game two challenges later. So what happened in “Uncut Hems”? Did the ends justify the jeans? “I’m super proud of who I am as a designer,” said Kayne Gillaspie in his exit from “Project Runway” in episode six, “Like Totally ’90s.” “I’ve grown so much since my high school days. But losing is still tough. It’s an emotional time. I want my ‘Project Runway’ legacy to be that I really showed the world my mind, my heart, my skill, my soul, and I was 100% authentic. Going out with grace is the way to go. That’s how Dolly would do it.”
It has been an unforgiving season on “Project Runway,” which has lived up to the phrase, “One day you’re in, and the next you’re out.” There’s no immunity from elimination as there has been in seasons past, so Viktor Luna won the grueling unconventional materials challenge, “Toying with Fashion,” only to be eliminated the very next week in “Coronation Day.

What does it take to win a design challenge on “Project Runway”? That’s the question the designers face every week on the fashion competition series where one day you’re in and the next day you’re out. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so the judges’ tastes and expectations can be a moving target. But there are a few generally consistent ways you can impress the panel: be original and forward-thinking, be modern, demonstrate a clear and consistent artistic vision, and for the love of God don’t be boring. All things being equal, it’s better to be ambitious than to play it safe. Scroll down to see who met those high standards and won their challenges every week in season 20, which was a special “All-Stars” edition of the series.

‘Project Runway’ 20 episode 5 recap: The latest challenge has the designers ‘Seeing Red’ [Live Blog]
It has already been a topsy-turvy All-Stars season on “Project Runway.” The first challenge was all about redemption from past fashion sins and brought up such painful memories for one designer that he nearly self-eliminated. Then we went straight into an unconventional materials challenge where Mila Hermanovski was eliminated in a controversial result. And there was another surprise ouster in “Coronation Day” when Viktor Luna was sent home despite winning the previous challenge; our readers didn’t exactly agree with that one either. So how does the show follow all that up? Follow along below for our live blog of the episode “Seeing Red” with all the night’s developments as they happen.

In fashion, one day you’re in and the next you’re out. That’s the guiding principle of “Project Runway,” now in its 20th season. Even in a year like this, which brings together experienced All-Star contestants from the show’s history, some outfits are bound to fail. The fashion design competition has strict time limits and no seamstresses around to help you sew, which can trip up even the most gifted artists. So who had the worst looks of the season according to judges Nina Garcia, Elaine Welteroth, and Brandon Maxwell? And did you agree with their withering criticisms? Scroll down to see each unfortunate look.

A very wise, very tall German woman once said: “In fashion, one day you’re in and the next you’re out.”
We were reminded of that mantra on this week’s Project Runway, which dropped a pair of frontrunners into the bottom before unceremoniously kicking one designer to the curb. And with no Siriano Save this time around, the judges’ decision was final.

“Project Runway” season 20 went straight from the season premiere into the unconventional materials challenge, which always pushes the creativity of the designers to the limit. “Project Runway” returned on June 15 with a “Project Redemption!” challenge intended to rewrite history. Several twists make up this challenge; not only will the bloggers be the designers’ models, but in the look they must incorporate Pantone’s color for 2014, radiant orchid. The winning look will be endorsed by Nina in a video that will appear on Hall of Style’s home page that will be viewed by the websites some fifty million subscribers. The winner will also receive a prize package from Pantone worth over $10,000! Not too shabby.

The designers have to craft a red carpet look in less than a day — but it quickly turns into a red carpet nightmare!
The designers are swept away from New York City to QVC’s headquarters in Westchester, Pa — via helicopter no less! Upon arriving, they are greeted by host and QVC correspondent Lisa Robertson. She asks them to design a gown for her that looks just as good on camera as it does in person, and will allow her to move freely during red carpet interviews. The winning look will be worn by her in a live broadcast, and a version of the dress will be sold on QVC — what a great prize this week! After last season’s pick of Gretchen as a winner — she who made smallpox chic again! — we were sort of “over” Project Runway. For like a day. Last night was the Season Finale of Project Runway, and as soon as it was over, I couldn't help but take to Twitter to squawk.
I'm going to try to refrain, but I'm not making any promises.
Let's face it ... this season stunk.
Well, there were a few bright spots.
We got to know the extremely likable and charismatic Anthony, as well as the alien cipher Olivier. Bert had an interesting backstory, and on every episode we learned that Josh's mother died.
What else? Umm ... Oh, remember that time Kim got scared of the roach and jumped on the table? That was pretty funny ...
Okay, I admit it. I'm stalling so I don't have to talk about what happened on the finale. But we may as well get it over with.
So the four finalists hit Fashion Week, and showed their designs. So how did each one fare? Let's find out.

Beauty queen Anya Ayoung-Chee can add another title to her list of accomplishments. The former Miss Trinidad and Tobago was named the winner of "Project Runway" Season 9, beating out finalists Joshua McKinley , Viktor Luna , and Kimberly Goldson . Anya came into the competition with the a great eye but one huge disadvantage: she only had been sewing for four months. She proved to be a resourceful competitor challenge after challenge. Her most impressive win (aside from Thursday night's) came midseason, when she lost her fabric money and had to use change and leftover scraps to pull together a '70s-inspired look. Anya's final collection was Caribbean chic, flowly and feminine (see her winning collection above). Judges Heidi Klum , Michael Kors , Nina Garcia , and L'Wren Scott praised her eye for beautiful prints but said it was one-note (as we had correctly predicted ). Despite this, the judges admired her consistent point of view...

Click on the "Launch Gallery" button to see all four finalist's collections and see who we predict will be the big winner ... then tell toofab if you agree with our picks! Viktor Luna All season long, Viktor has been flying under the radar. His productivity has unmatched -- often producing multiple pieces when others designers struggled to complete just one look. His final collection may lack the colors of his competitors, but is still bold. His mirror image prints (inspired from Mexico) create a gorgeous Rosarch effect. His attention to detail -- exemplified in his zipper leather skirt and pearl jacket -- is unmatched. Prediction: Winner Anya Ayoung-Chee It's no surprise that the Trinidad and Tobago native Anya went with a print-heavy resort wear line.

Last night was part one of the finale show on Project Runway, which means it's the episode that's completely unnecessary.
The only interesting part of these penultimate episodes is when Tim visits the finalists in their homes, but that could be easily incorporated into the real finale.
And after 90 minutes of hearing Heidi say , "One of you will be out, One of you will be out, one of you will be out," guess what? No one is out.
So what was the point?
As soon as Kimberly was chosen as the third designer, I knew they were gonna pull the "Oh, you're all so fabulous, we decided everyone goes on" trick, and sure enough, Anya was spared.
Ugh. Anyway, let's a look at each designer, and what they had to offer the judges this week.

New York -- Fashion Week and TV came together Friday (Sept. 9) at Lincoln Center for "Project Runway's" finale, with nine designers presenting their collections, ranging from the elegant to the strange.
Though no one theme ruled the runway, the event featured an abundance of flowing clothes; some accessorized with blue wrists and gladiator cuff bracelets. Metallic dresses and shorts remain popular as do completely sheer tops. Apparently, for now, bras and camisoles are out.
"We have been very tough on them, especially me, so I have learned," host and "Project Runway" judge Heidi Klum -- stunning in a backless, black sequined halter and pants -- says of this season's assortment of contestants.
Up first was Laura Kathleen. Like many of the designers, she mentions how seeing her creations on the catwalk is a lifelong ambition.
"I've been dreaming about this moment since I was 13," Kathleen says, explaining that her collection is for "everyday women.

Season Nine of Project Runway is well underway, and after five episodes, there are still five members of Team Gay left.
Because the early going is basically just whittling down the cast to a reasonable number, we're going to eschew a regular recap and just focus on the highlights. (And many thanks to Ae reader Miz Liz for continuing the recaps in the forums while we were taking a sabbatical).
Seen And Not Heard
This week's competition involves working with children. *shudder* But wait! These aren't ordinary kids, they're art students, so the annoyance level is at a reasonable decibel. The kids create a painting for each designer, and that designer has to use the painting to create something avant-garde for the runway. I was crushed that they didn't have to literally use the painting. I would've given anything to see the models try to navigate the runway with their heads poking through.

When you're striving to separate yourself from the pack on a reality show competition, having to work with a partner can be a tough proposition. That seems especially true on 'Project Runway' (Thursdays, 9Pm on Lifetime), where it's difficult enough turning your style into an actual physical piece of clothing without having to meld that with someone else's ideas. Viktor Luna and Bert Keeter struggled with that tension on Thursday's episode, and didn't exactly rise to the occasion.
The pair partnered to make what looked like two different dresses on the top and bottom, and argued over it throughout the whole process. "I wanted to do a contemporary look, and he was that, 'Well, I really think we should do this,'" said Keeter. "And I had some other idea, and, no, 'this is what we have to do.'" Pet Project
This week's competition takes the designers to a pet store, where Tim Gunn tells them that this is one of Project Runway's "unconventional challenges." Wait, aren't most of them? The have to design an outfit made entirely of pet products, but makes a point again that it should be "unconventional," something that one poor Mormon boy should've listened to.
Honey Badger Don't Give A Sh*T
Bert Keeter became an instant audience favorite with his win last week, but apparently he believes that "immunity" means "i'll just take this challenge off." He was shockingly apathetic, and even admitted as much.
