At the beginning of Act Two of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, Lindsay Mendez and other ensemble members sing “It’s A Hit!,” celebrating the successful opening of characters Charlie and Frank’s first Broadway musical. Indeed, one could say the same about this revival of “Merrily,” not just because of its smash box office receipts, but also because of the seven Tony Awards nominations that it received on April 30. This recognition from New York theatre’s highest honor is a true redemption for the show, whose original production was a notorious flop for composer Stephen Sondheim and director Hal Prince that ran only 16 regular performances and earned only a single bid for Sondheim’s original score. But how does this production’s Tony success compare to other recent revivals of the late composer’s works?

The Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street will conclude its run this spring.
The production, which is currently starring Aaron Tveit (Moulin Rouge!, Fox’s Grease: Live) as Sweeney Todd and Sutton Foster (Younger, The Music Man) as Mrs. Lovett, will close on May 5, as the two leads end their 12-week run in the show.
The musical, directed by Thomas Kail, began performances at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Feb. 26, 2023, and opened on March 26, with Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford in the starring roles. The production was originally meant to end in January 2024, at the end of their run, according to a spokesperson for the production, but was extended with the casting of Tveit and Foster.

John Oliver got back to talking about politics on Last Week Tonight and took a swipe at O.J. Simpson.
While on the topic of U.S. Senator Bob Menendez and his wife Nadine Arslanian, Oliver showcased a clip of when he proposed to Arslanian in front of the Taj Mahal. While doing so, Menendez serenaded Arslanian with a musical number from The Greatest Showman.
Menendez sang “Never Enough” which lyrics say that “towers of gold will never be enough,” which made Oliver relate it to Simpson.
“It doesn’t look great now to hear the world’s oldest theater kid sing about how ‘towers of gold will never be enough’ for him, given the multiple gold bars that were found in his actual house,” Oliver said. “I don’t care how much you like a song, if it sounds like a confession, maybe don’t sing it in public.”

The final episodes are almost here. All Rise Season 4 premieres on Saturday, September 16, and they're bringing the drama.
OWN TV dropped the official season trailer, which teases loss, romance, returns, and riveting cases.
It’s hard to believe this is the end since we’ve grown to love these characters, but hopefully, OWN had enough time to craft a proper goodbye.
At the end of All Rise Season 3 Episode 10, Brandon Nation had caused senseless violence and possibly killed Ness and Teddy.
We’re still unsure if one or both of them die, but Lola is on the warpath to prevent more violence.
Lola’s marriage was also in jeopardy since Andre took advantage of her fear and kissed her, and Robin walked in at that moment.
Can she and Robin work things out and learn to communicate their needs better?
The other couples are finally flourishing. Luke and Emily finally...

We have unfortunate but expected news about OWN's thrilling courtroom drama All Rise.
The series has been canceled after three seasons.
Truthfully, the writing had been on the wall for some time.
All Rise Season 3 Episode 10 aired a year ago, and the series has been on hiatus ever since -- never a good sign for any series.
In March, Deadline reported that the entire cast had been released, meaning that new deals would have to be reached if negotiations got underway for a fourth season.
As a result, the series has faced an uphill battle since its move to the cable network after CBS swung the axe following All Rise Season 2.
The only silver lining here is that we still have ten episodes of All Rise left to air.
They will begin airing on Saturday, September 16, at 9 p.m. Et/Pt.

When Jesse Green wrote in his New York Times review of this season’s revival of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” that the show had been “restored to its proper size,” he meant its orchestrations, staging, and ensemble, but he could have been forecasting its Tony Awards nominations success, too. This most recent remounting of the legendary Stephen Sondheim musical received eight Tony bids, the most of any musical revival of the year. But how does it stack up against the original production and the two revivals that preceded it?
While this “Sweeney” is back to its original scale, it is actually just shy of the very first production in terms of the Tonys, missing its nominations record by one. The original from 1979 netted nine bids for Best Musical, Director (Hal Prince), Actor (Len Cariou), Actress (Angela Lansbury), Score, Book, and Scenic, Costume and Lighting Designs. The...

First “Company,” then “Into the Woods,” and now the demon barber of Fleet Street. In the year or so since legendary composer Stephen Sondheim’s death, Broadway has seen an increasing number of revivals of his works. The trend continued on March 26 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre with the opening of a new production of his masterpiece, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” Tony nominee and internationally-renowned vocalist Josh Groban plays the menacing title role as the wronged barber out for revenge, starring opposite Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford as Mrs. Lovett, the schemer who devises baking Todd’s victims into meat pies in an austere nineteenth-century London.
Led by Tony-winning “Hamilton” director Thomas Kail, the ensemble also boasts Tony winner Ruthie Ann Miles (“The King and I”), Jordan Fisher, Gaten Matarazzo, and many others amongst its 25 players. Kail has also enlisted three-time Tony winner Alex Lacamoire as music supervisor...

In the lead-up to Tony nominations being announced on May 2, Sam Eckmann and I are predicting 10 of the Musical categories, where new breakout shows like “Kimberly Akimbo” and “Some Like it Hot” and revivals of “Sweeney Todd” and “Into the Woods” will compete for the highest honors of the New York theatre community. Nominations will be announced on May 2 and winners will be revealed on June 11. Watch the full video slugfest above.
At the outset, I declare that I think “Kimberly Akimbo” will have “a sensational Tony night.” The new show by Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire leads both of our predictions for the Best Musical prize, but we agree that “Some Like it Hot” will be a strong challenger. Sam describes it as “a ‘Hello Dolly!’ for the modern times,” noting how it’s both “super funny but also very poignant.”

It sounds like Judge Carmichael's courtroom is closing for the second time. Warner Bros. Television has opted not to pick up the options of the All Rise cast, making the possibility of a fourth-season renewal unlikely.
An OWN courtroom drama series, the All Rise TV show stars Simone Missick, Wilson Bethel, Jessica Camacho, J. Alex Brinson, Ruthie Ann Miles, Lindsay Mendez, Lindsey Gort, and Marg Helgenberger. Samantha Marie Ware, Paul McCrane, and Suzanne Cryer recur. The series follows the chaotic, hopeful (and sometimes absurd) world of those working at a Los Angeles courthouse. Lola Carmichael (Missick) is an appointed judge who was previously a highly regarded and impressive deputy district attorney. She depends on the counsel of people like her best friend, Deputy District Attorney Mark Callan (Bethel), Judge Lisa Benner (Helgenberger), and pragmatic judicial assistant Sherri...

The fate of All Rise is, once again, up in the air.
Deadline reported Thursday that Warner Bros. Television has released the cast of the legal drama.
OWN, which picked up the show from CBS after the network canceled it after two seasons, has yet to schedule the second half of All Rise Season 3.
The show has been off the air since early August, so the lack of updates on when the rest of the season would air has been a major cause for concern.
Deadline notes that OWN will not make an official decision on a pickup for a potential fourth season until the next batch of episodes air.
The outlet believes the episodes will see the light of day later this year.
However, there's a good chance the cast will have moved on to new projects, meaning that assembling everyone again for a potential All Rise Season 4 will be a difficult task.

Exclusive: Once again, All Rise is facing a possible cancellation. The cast of the courtroom drama series, led by Simone Missick, has been released by producing studio Warner Bros. Television.
OWN gave All Rise a second lease on life, picking up the series for a 20-episode Season 3 in 2021 following its cancellation by CBS after two seasons. The new season, which has been completed, was slated to run in two 10-episode batches, with the first half airing last summer and the second one set to air later this year.
All Rise was not able to bring in broadcast-size audience to OWN but Season 3A did Ok by cable standards. With the cast options coming up and Season 3B yet to be scheduled, I hear the studio notified the actors that their options are not getting picked up. OWN is expected to make a decision on the show’s future after the episodes air.

It's been a long wait for All Rise, but the former CBS drama makes its grand return to the air Tuesday, June 7, at 8/7c.
As previously reported, the new season will bow on OWN, just over a year after CBS canceled it.
The freshly released trailer highlights there will be a lot of twists and turns on All Rise Season 3.
“This election exposed your vulnerabilities,” attorney Corrine Cuthbert (guest star Anne Heche) tells Lola.
"This little war of ours is far from over," she declares.
Thankfully, Lola has a great support system in Judge Benner, who tells her to "show them why you won."
The series follows the chaotic, hopeful, and sometimes absurd lives of its judges, prosecutors, and public defenders, as they work with bailiffs, clerks, and police to get justice for the people of Los Angeles amidst a flawed legal system.
