When the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin comic book started coming out, it was a major hit for Idw Publishing, as well as a major moment in the evolution of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise overall. The comic book was written by Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, and Tom Waltz, and showed us a dark and grim future in which Michelangelo survived as the only remaining turtle. The story was enormously popular and it seems now that a live-action movie adaptation of the comic book is in the works.
The news comes after last year’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem proved to be a major hit, and while Mutant Mayhem was an animated feature, it doesn’t seem like The Last Ronin will go in that same direction.

Since their debut in the 1980s, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have grown into a permanent fixture in popular culture. From their catchy theme song to the four anthropomorphic turtle brothers, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael, the franchise has touched the hearts of fans of all ages.
And now, with the news of a reboot on the horizon, Paramount has confirmed to be developing a live-action, R-rated film based on the gripping comic book miniseries Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. So, who is in charge of guiding this vision?
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin
To put it mildly, Zack Snyder seems like the perfect person to bring these Ninja heroes back to the big screen. His work on movies like 300 and Man of Steel mirrors his ability to create epic and thrilling battles, which would make him a great match for the turtles’ ninja skills and unique fighting styles.

Paramount scored a solid hit last year with the stylish and witty Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and the studio already has a sequel to that one bubbling away in a cauldron of ooze, scheduled to land in 2026. Yet it clearly feels there is room to also revisit the characters in live-action form, and to take the concept in a darker, grittier and altogether more violent direction, setting up an adaptation of popular Idw comics title Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin.
Turtles comic co-creator Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz wrote the book based on an older story by Eastman and his co-creator Peter Laird, while the art came courtesy of Esau and Isaac Escorza, Ben Bishop and Eastman.
A pitch-black tale of dystopia, murder and vengeance – so you know, not for kids — The Last Ronin is set in a totalitarian future New York where Shredder's grandson...

After the success of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, inspiring a sequel and animated series, Paramount Pictures continues to go all in on Turtle Power. THR reports that the studio is now developing a new R-rated, live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.
The live-action movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, an adaptation of the bestselling Idw comic miniseries of the same name. It’ll mark the first R-rated feature film for the franchise.
The Last Ronin is “Set in a totalitarian future New York City, the comic mini-series told of how the Turtles and master Splinter are killed off one by one by the grandson of the villainous Shredder and synthetic ninjas. Paramount hasn’t even started their CinemaCon session yet and news is breaking like flies on a rib roast.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin based on the fan-fave graphic novel is in the works with Tyler Burton Smith writing and Walter Hamada producing through his 18hz production company, as part of his multi-year deal with the studio. The movie will be the first R-rated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. Hopefully, there won’t be any naughty scenes involving turtles ala Fritz the Cat.
Smith recently co-wrote the upcoming Roadside Attractions R-rated action movie Boy Kills World which hits theaters on April 26.
Last Ronin was published as a miniseries between 2020 and 2022 and is set in a totalitarian future New York City as the Turtles and their master Splinter are assassinated by the grandson of their prime villain Shredder and his posse. One of the Turtles survives and swears revenge.

The 40-year-old, kid-friendly franchise Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is returning to movie theaters in live action, in a project that Paramount Pictures is targeting instead for adults.
The studio is developing the bloody and intense graphic novel series “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin” with screenwriter Tyler Burton Smith (“Boy Kills World”) and Walter Hamada’s 18hz production company through his multi-year deal. The 2020-2022 miniseries — written by original “Turtles” creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, with Eastman and Tom Waltz developing the script — is set in a bleak, dystopian future in which Oroku Hiroto, the grandson of the Turtles’ arch-nemesis, Shredder, rules New York City as a totalitarian despot. Hiroto has killed all but one of the Turtles, as well as their mentor, Splinter; the remaining Turtle seeks revenge by wielding all four of their signature weapons.

Following the end of 2020’s massively successful mini-series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, the heroes in a half shell are officially gone — at least, in one continuity dubbed the “Ronin-verse.” In their absence, a new generation is ready to pick up the mantle.

Well with how the 50th issue ended, with Shredder dying and Splinter taking his place as leader of the Foot Clan, it wasn’t surprising to guess that the following instalments would explore the power vacuum that the former’s death had created and a transitional phase of the series. It wouldn't be a third person brawler game without some character specialties. That's exactly what Activision is showing off in the Character Trailers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan!
These trailers show highlights of each turtle and what they bring to the team. Leonardo’s determined focus, Raphael’s explosive attacks, Donatello’s calculating genius and Michelangelo’s wild energy are on full display. Not to mention, the environments and enemies that the Heroes in a Half Shell will encounter.
Activision has worked really hard, marketing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan. So far, we've seen a couple of gameplay trailers, a villains trailer, and now character trailers. That's a lot of content for most video games. Perhaps, they're trying to pounce on the hype train, as Tmnt Out of the Shadows approaches. It's a smart move for the developer. Especially, since the game looks really good.

After what feels like hundreds of leaks, Activision has officially debuted the first trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants In Manhattan.
Based off an original story penned by Tmnt author Tom Waltz, Mutants In Manhattan looks to be another showcase for the acclaimed developer. Similar to two other recent PlatinumGames developed titles, The Legend of Korra and Transformers: Devastation, the game will sport a stylized cel-shaded look. The colorful visuals will work in tandem with a gritty take on the popular franchise that is more in line with the comic book series, rather than the Nickelodeon TV series and film franchise.

I waited for a Thermian to pop up or for Brandon to stumble into a panel, but nothing happened. After a little digging, I discovered the truth behind this deviation from the main story. So while we will not be discussing what happens after Jason and the crew manage to land on Dryth, we will be looking at the comic I was sent because that’s how I roll. I hope everyone had a merry April Fool’s Day.

In a storyline that could bring tears to the eyes of fans worldwide, one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was killed in battle this week.
Donatello died in the pages of Idw Publishing's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #44 comic, out now.
Musclebound henchmen Bebop and Rocksteady were ordered to dispatch the hero by arch villain Shredder.
The comic was written by Tom Waltz and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman, with art by Cory Smith.
The comic is part of the 'Attack on Technodrome' storyline, in which the alien Krang has been attempting to terraform the Earth.
Donatello attempted to fight off the villains with the help of Metalhead, but was killed by a blow from Rocksteady's hammer.
Raise your pizza tonight, to a fallen hero. Dude.

Donatello is dead! He was taken out in brutal fashion in the pages of today's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #44, and fan-favourite villains Bebop and Rocksteady were the ones responsible for the beloved character's murder as you can see below. The series is written by Tom Waltz and Tmnt co-creator Kevin Eastman, and IGN has more details on the moments leading up to this if you're curious to learn more. Apparently, "Leonardo, Raphael, and Michelangelo were trying to stop Krang from terraforming the planet using the alien "Technodrome," leaving Donatello running command from their home base. Shredder had ordered Bebop and Rocksteady to kill Donatello if anything went wrong, and sure enough, something did. Donatello tried to fight them off, even getting some help from Metalhead (being controlled by scientist Harold Lillia), but the duo was too much. The killing blow came when Rocksteady smashed his shell with a sledgehammer." Though...

In Shops This Week:
Nailbiter Hack/Slash
Writer: Joshua Williamson/Tim Seeley
Artist: Mike Henderson/Emilio Laiso
Publisher: Image Comics
Price: $5
Description: Serial Killers Meet Serial Killer… Killers! Cassie Hack vs. the Nailbiter! Vlad vs. the Lucha Eliminador! It’S On!
Our Take: Unless you’re already a fan of either Nailbiter or Hack/Slash, don’t bother with this. If you are, this is still not an essential title; there aren’t any earth-shaking consequences for Nailbiter or Hack/Slash. In fact, the way both stories go, it’s hard not to feel a bit ripped off; Hack/Slash protagonist Cassie Hack ends up right back where she started and Nailbiter himself is being deceptive the whole time so we don’t really learning anything about him either. That said, the storylines are definitely fun and well-written so if you just really enjoy either of these titles, at only...

So this week I ended up grabbing physical copies of the comics I usually review for the website. It occurred to me, while at the shop, that the money I was spending digitally to get my comics would be better spent at the comic book shop I love so much. But then, when I got home, I remembered: oh yeah, I have to actually put these comics somewhere. I considered having a contest to give them away when I’m done reviewing them but that would seem like bribing readers and that’s not something I condone. Plus, I’m not sure I’d give away the comics I actually enjoyed. I just don’t quite know what to do with the failures and I can’t predict what’s going to be a failure reliably enough to avoid them. So, sadly, I’ll be returning to digital issues next week,...

Cross-overs have been a staple of the comic book business since before Superman met Bugs Bunny. For the publishers, the crossover is an easy way to sell books. For fans, it’s either a dream come true or an over hyped nightmare of biblical proportions. When a crossover works, it benefits the consumer to no end. Idw has had their fair share of success with their recent crossover series. From the over-top throwback Transformers Vs. GI Joe to the recently announced X-Files and Millennium, Idw is giving just what the fans want. This week, the company mashes together two of their more celebrated, and culturally loved properties, with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters #1.
Tmnt writer Tom Waltz and Ghostbusters writer Erik Burnham join forces to craft the tale. When a new invention goes haywire, the Turtles are sent to a whole new type of New York City. One with a whole lot more ghosts…...

Halloween looms ever closer, my fiends. Can you taste it? Smell it? Hear it?
Find quiet. Settle your thoughts. Be still.
Alone. Look out your window into the night.
It’s there. Just out of sight. It’s waiting for you to leave your car, or your home, or your job. It waits in the places between.
Halloween wants you.
Wants to be you.
You think you wear it, like a mask, but the truth? It’s you that’s being worn.
It draws near…

Me and writer Scott Snyder have a history. In 2011 I was introduced to his work via Severed, his debut at Image Comics. Up until that point, he’d been known mostly for working with DC/Vertigo, as a Batman writer or on a Stephen King-headed series, American Vampire, neither of which interested me.

I’ve turned over a new leaf. You see, I passed up an opportunity this week. I could’ve reviewed the much anticipated Grendel Vs The Shadow crossover and passed up on either Alice Cooper or the new Silent Hill comic, even though they actually fit better the horror movie format of Destroy The Brain. But I didn’t! So instead you get three reviews of three horror comics, and I’m going to try to stick more to horror comics from here on out, when I can.
Full disclosure; the Grendel Vs The Shadow comic is $6! Honestly, this pretty well scared me away from doing it even more. Sure, I probably could’ve just reviewed that and skipped Alice Cooper and Silent Hill, but that would’ve been even more of a betrayal of Destroy The Brain.
You can trust me to be honest about these things. Really, you can.

Earlier this month, we reported that the cast and crew of the 1999 cult classic Galaxy Quest were open to returning for a sequel, and we were frankly pretty excited about the idea. Now, by Grabthar’s hammer, it’s actually happening… in the form of a comic book. That’s still exciting, right? Maybe?
According to Comic Book Resources, Idw Publishing will put out a Galaxy Quest ongoing series from Ghostbusters and Shooting Star comics writer Erik Burnham and artist Nacno Arranz, which will hit store shelves in 2015.
Burnham recently talked a bit about the direction of the book, and how it connects with the film, saying:
“Well, at the end of their movie, Tim Allen’s character, Jason, used the Omega 13 device to rewind time 13 seconds and undo the catastrophic death of his crew. (Um… sorry for the 15 year-old spoilers!) Messing with time. Maybe that affected more than the ship.

The Last Fall #1
Written by Tom Waltz
Art by Casey Maloney
Published by Idw
The Last Fall is a war comic about one man, Sergeant Fall, and the losses that he’s experienced on the battlefield and at home because of the war. In the Lettya sysem, Krovin and Merkonia are at war while their shared star enters a red giant phase that will doom all of them. Krovin was formerly a poor planet that was colonized and exploited by Merkonia, and Merkonia needs its fuel reserves to escape the growing star. Krovin is fighting back to resist this, and a bloody stalemate has developed. This comic is off to a good start, with a nice balance between expository dialogue, character development, and action panels. Indeed, this is one of the stronger opening issue comics that I’ve seen in a while.

Idw Publishing has announced a Ghostbusters and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles team-up.
The miniseries will unite the two popular franchises in the latest of a series of unlikely mashups from the publisher.
See Bill Murray in all-new 30th anniversary Ghostbusters trailer
Tom Waltz and Ghostbusters editor Erik Burnham will write the comic with Ghostbusters artist Dan Schoening.
The series will see the Turtles travelling to an alternate reality New York to team up with the Ghostbusters.
"This is an idea that Erik, series editor Bobby Curnow, and I have bounced off each other for quite a while," said Waltz. "And being as deeply entrenched in both properties as the three of us are gives us a unique perspective on how to bring them together.
"And what better time to do it than during the combined 30th year anniversary celebration?"

In a spectacle that brings to mind their legendary solo albums in 1978, the members of Kiss recently headed out on their own again. This time the Starchild, the Demon, the Celestial, and the Catman got their own individual comic books courtesy of Idw Publishing. Kiss is never content with the status quo, and the God of Thunder himself (Gene Simmons) encouraged Idw Limited to release special edition Comicfolios of each issue.
The first of the four issues to get the royal treatment is Kiss Solo: The Demon. Idw's Chief Creative Officer / Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall wrote the issue and longtime Kiss comic artist Angel Medina illustrated. The explosive tale pits the Demon against the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Ryall shared a little bit of his own excitement about the Kiss Solo Comicfolios.
"Obviously, I'm a lifelong fan of Kiss, and this is something I'm happy to have in my own personal Kiss collection.

While I love bellowing, I’m not really going to get into that today, as it seems like the thing people are most angry is about is Michael Bay’s face and I don’t really have a problem with it. I think his face is all right.
What I will mention, though, is my surprise that they didn’t cast someone made entirely out of Lego bricks.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Lego has just come out, and goodness me, it’s great.

To say that Idw Publishing has successfully revived the Kiss comic franchise in a unique and entertaining manner would be an understatement. The band has become an energy that surpasses four physical bodies and now can be immortalized through the spiritual transportation of their mystical souls to other individuals… or possibly life forms? It's sort of like how the real group will live on for many more decades through countless tribute bands across the world. If fans get on board and stay onboard, there's no limit to the adventures we could see the "Four-Who-Are-One" embark on.
In the second story arc of the ongoing series (issues #3 and #4), "World Without Heroes," writer Tom Waltz takes us into an engrossing time of swords, sorcery, dragons, wizards, and fair maidens. Four opposing rulers control a land and its alienated natives. The discord between the overlords gives the sinister Destroyer a perfect opportunity to...
