Kim Godwin hoped to build ABC News’ future by cutting out some of its past.
Tasked, ostensibly, with shaking up a culture of the Disney-backed news organization that pit anchors against one another and led to claims of intolerable behavior behind the scenes, Godwin was supposed to revamp a storied journalism hub without losing any of the impetus that spurred employees to make shows such as “World News Tonight” and “Good Morning America” the most-watched in their category.
But the ABC News president, who was still working Monday after sending out a letter Sunday announcing her retirement following a shaky three-year reign, lost the support of much of the news operation by installing an array of senior executives who proved difficult to work with, while ousting veterans who had the respect of their colleagues. She also moved slowly, often taking weeks to make important decisions about programming and personnel, according...

Exclusive: Few people embody the act of balancing legacy media with the digital frontier quite like Bill Owens.
As the executive producer of 60 Minutes, he is the caretaker of a broadcast TV franchise well into its sixth decade, one of the few pieces of programming outside of NFL football capable of drawing mass tune-in. He is also aiming to deliver news about topics like the 2024 election, China, Gaza, the southern U.S. border, Cillian Murphy, and many more in a way that Gen Z cord-nevers can engage with it.
“I really do want to meet viewers where there’s interest,” he told Deadline in an interview in the show’s headquarters on Manhattan’s Far West Side. “We’re not trying to grab people on social media or TikTok by being something that 60 Minutes isn’t. We want to use the same language, we don’t want to do silly things.

Another major media company is merging its news division and its local stations in hopes of wringing new profits from two businesses that are being hurt by the rise of streaming video.
Disney will place the veteran executive Debra OConnell atop a new division that encompasses ABC News and its local station operations, with ABC News President Kim Godwin and Stations President Chad Matthews reporting to her. The structure is similar to one Paramount Global put in place last year when it folded CBS News, local CBS stations and syndication under a single executive, Wendy McMahon.
As president of news group and networks for Disney Entertainment, OConnell will report to Dana Walden, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment. Godwin, meanwhile, has renewed her contract to stay in her current role, even though she will have a new layer of management between her and top Disney executives.

Neeraj Khemlani is stepping down as the president and co-head of CBS News and Stations.
In a memo to staffers on Sunday, Khemlani said that he had signed a first look deal with the network to develop documentaries, scripted series and books for Simon & Schuster.
“It’s an opportunity that will allow me to write, report and develop stories that I’ve long wanted to pursue,” he wrote.
George Cheeks, the president and CEO of CBS Entertainment Group, said that he will update staffers soon with information about new leadership and structure for the news division. That may come as soon as Monday, and there is some speculation that Wendy McMahon, who was named president and co-head of CBS News and Stations in 2021, will take on a new or expanded role. Khemlani and McMahon were named to their posts in a restructuring that combined two divisions of the company.
The headlines coming out of CBS News will soon be guided by a new executive.
Neeraj Khemlani, who arrived at the Paramount Global unit in 2021 to oversee CBS News and local stations along with Wendy McMahon, is leaving his role running the unit that produces “60 Minutes,” “CBS Evening News” and “Face The Nation,” among other programs. Khemlani told CBS News staffers Sunday that he has decided to exit and will instead pursue a new multi-year first-look deal with CBS that has him developing content including books for Simon & Schuster, documentaries and scripted series.
Many senior news executives and anchors sign contracts for three years or more. Khemlani has during a two-years-plus tenure helped to rework CBS News’ morning programming; eliminate divisions between the linear news staff and CBS News streaming operations; bolster its investigative unit; and inject new talent into the famously insular division, including Robert Costa, Natalie Morales and Cecilia Vega.

Lisa Ling has, over the course of her career, traveled to far-off places including Costa Rica and North Korean. Her next stop: CBS News.
Ling, who recently cut ties with CNN after the Warner Bros. Discovery-based cable-news outlet canceled her documentary program, “This Is Life,” will join CBS News as a contributor, says co-president Neeraj Khemlani. She is expected to debut on CBS News later this summer, and will be based in Los Angeles.

Now that ABC News has cleaned house, it probably needs to fill it back up.
Executives at the Disney news division — and its corporate parent — hoped to cut recent scrutiny by parting ways with Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes, the co-anchors of early-afternoon program “GMA3” who also had a romantic relationship despite being married to other people. On Friday, the two sides broke up, so to speak, with ABC News President Kim Godwin telling staffers she hoped their departure would end a period of “distraction” at the home of “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight.”
But Godwin and her team are likely to face a period of rebuilding.
Holmes and Robach leave ABC News as it needs to focus more closely on lining up a new tier of talent. Cecilia Vega, a Washington correspondent who frequently filled in for Robin Roberts on “GMA3,” recently left ABC News for a new role at “60 Minutes.

Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes, who surprised TV viewers by developing a behind-the-scenes romance while anchoring ABC News’ “GMA3,” are getting a divorce — from the Disney-backed journalism unit.
“After several productive conversations with Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes, about different options, we all agreed it’s best for everyone that they move on from ABC News,” the news division said in a statement released Friday evening. “We recognize their talent and commitment over the years and are thankful for their contributions.”
The pair was benched from their duties at the early-afternoon program in early December, though when word first leaked of their relationship, they were initially allowed to continue anchoring. ABC News President Kim Godwin opted to take them off the air to tamp down gossip and speculation, fearing that such stuff could tarnish the overall “Good Morning America” franchise. Cecilia Vega, who has been with ABC News for more than a decade, will jump to a new correspondent role on CBS News’ “60 Minutes,” leaving behind an influential role covering the White House for the Disney-backed news operation.
Her move marks a rare effort to expand the hub of on-air personnel devoted to “60 Minutes.” In the recent past, executive producer Bill Owens has worked to augment his staff, elevating correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Jon Wertheim to full-time status and trying to develop a team devoted to a separate streaming effort tied to the show, an initiative that was ultimately scrapped. Pluto, the ad-supported streaming site operated by parent company Paramount Global, does feature a channel that features curated and archival material from the long-running program.
In an interview, Owens said he has been impressed by Vega’s range of reportorial experience as well as her time spent in print journalism.

The queen’s funeral will be the first time such an event has been broadcast on television. In 1952, when Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne, the funeral procession of King George VI was televised in the U.K., but the funeral itself remained private. Not so this time.

Updated, with comments from Tucker Carlson: Karine Jean-Pierre devoted the start of her first press briefing as White House Press Secretary on Monday by paying tribute to the 10 victims of the mass shooting in Buffalo, NY, as authorities point to the suspect’s embrace of a ‘great replacement” theory that elites are “replacing” white voters with more obedient non-white immigrants.
Jean-Pierre, though, declined to specially name any politicians or Fox News host Tucker Carlson who have espoused some version of “replacement theory,” to the condemnation of groups like the Anti-Defamation League.
ABC News’ Cecilia Vega asked, “On this notion that immigrants or others are believed to be by some ‘taking over’ and pushing white people out of positions of authority in this country, which is at the heart of so much of this terror that is being spewed online, does the White House believe these views are being amplified by Tucker Carlson?...

Three years and one administration later, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is back in Washington, D.C., for the first time since 2019. This year’s event, headlined by “The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah, will take place on Saturday at 8 p.m. Et. The program will air live and uninterrupted on C-span, as well as C-span.org and the C-span Now App.
Hosted by the White House Correspondents’ Association, the dinner has been a mainstay of the press corps since its founding in 1914. Presidents have traditionally attended the dinner at least once during their term — and President Joe Biden is expected this year — but former President Donald Trump was notably absent from the dinners held in 2017, 2018 and 2019. The dinner was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rumors were swirling last week in Washington, D.C. that James Corden was shooting something for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner when he was spotted with camera crews at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Now I can exclusively reveal that the talk show host shot a “Take a Break” segment, inspired by his “The Late Late Show” series of the same name, that will open the annual so-called “nerd prom.”
“They shot in the Briefing Room, the Oval Office and the Navy Mess,” veteran awards show producer Bob Bain, who makes his debut producing the dinner this year, tells me. “Our cold open is James Corden in front of the White House saying, ‘All you journalists out there, I know you walk through these halls every day, seeing all these people that make this place tick. Well, today, I’m going to give some of them a break.'”
Bain also tells me...

Good Morning America co-host Robin Roberts says that she will return to the show “as soon as I can” after testing positive for Covid.
“Appreciate the concern about my absence this week on @GMA. Unfortunately I tested positive for Covid. Grateful my symptoms have been mild and that I’m doing well. Looking forward to returning as soon as I can,” Roberts wrote on Twitter.
Janai Norman co-anchored the show on Tuesday, and Cecilia Vega filled in from Wednesday to Friday.

President Joe Biden holds a solo press conference at the White House on Wednesday, one of the few such events he’s had in the 12 months since he took office.
Reporters will likely pepper him with questions about Omicron, the situation with Russia and Ukraine, the status of voting rights and the future of Build Back Better. It would not be at all surprising if he’s asked simply how he thinks he’s done in his first year, the kind of self-assessment the can be telling in and of itself.
What viewers will see are far fewer reporters than normal as social distancing limits the number allowed in the East Room to just 42, this for an event that normally packs in as many journalists as possible.
That’s a reflection of the surprises and setbacks for Biden as his presidency reaches the one-year mark on Thursday. His administration has...

One year into the Biden administration, the nation’s big TV news organizations’ hopes for a return to normalcy have yet to be borne out.
While White House activity has found a more familiar cadence during President Joe Biden’s first year — ABC News political director Rick Klein calls it “professional” — many of the TV reporters who cover the place say their working lives have yet to return to pre-Trump rhythms. The ongoing pandemic and ramped up demands for streaming initiatives have increased pressure on correspondents and news organizations at a time when traditional ratings are down.
“Today was bananas,” says Cecilia Vega, ABC News’ chief White House correspondent, during a recent phone interview that started just after 11 a.m. — before the day was even halfway through. She had been working furiously since 5 in the morning. “Is it slower? We are not at the point at the White House where...
