The period noir crime thriller debuted on AMC on June 12. The first season will consist of six episodes total, as will the second season. The show is based on the Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman.
Set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, the series follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) of the Tribal Police as he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. The closer he digs to the truth, the more he exposes the wounds of his past. He is joined on this journey by his new deputy, Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon). Chee, too, has old scores to settle from his youth on the reservation.
Jessica Matten also stars along with Deanna Allison, Rainn Wilson, Elva Guerra, Jeremiah Bitsui, Eugene Brave Rock, and Noah Emmerich.
Graham Roland created the series and serves as executive producer.

By the third episode of AMC’s Dark Winds, there are ongoing investigations into multiple murders on Navajo land, as well as a string of bank heists that may or may not relate to a group of radical Native American activists. Tribal police and the FBI are on the case, following leads both human and supernatural.
It’s here that Dark Winds pauses for an episode devoted primarily to a coming-of-age ritual for a young character who hasn’t been part of the story previously and won’t play any role in the story going forward.
The ceremony, kinaaldé, and the episode represent why Dark Winds is interesting and thoroughly worthwhile despite a first season in which the central mystery never comes together as anything close to compelling.

“Montana Story,” the latest film from longtime co-directors Scott McGhee and David Siegel, opens on chickens.
It’s an apt first note for this pastoral story, where everyday life acts as a backdrop for wrenching character backstories. The script is a touch too novelistic and the ending rather predictable, but pitch-perfect performances keep this melodrama from slipping too far into mawkishness.
The titular story is one of two estranged, 20-something siblings reunited over their comatose father. At first only Cal, played by Owen Teague (“It”), shows up to get everything in order. He struggles to pay their longtime housekeeper, Valentina; to reconcile his father’s debts; and to re-home his beloved (but now ancient) childhood horse. A seismic shock arrives in the form of his sister, Erin (the excellent Haley Lu Richardson), from whom he hasn’t heard in seven years.
A harrowing act by their father spurred Erin’s departure,...

It takes a certain amount of expertise to build a narrative without telling the audience everything as soon as possible. In Montana Story, filmmakers Scott McGehee and David Siegel demonstrate incredible restraint and a hefty trust in their audience. The basic premise: two siblings converge to face old sins and lingering scars as their father lies comatose in the final days of his life. McGehee and Siegel have been turning out impressive pictures for thirty years; this is their most nuanced to date.
Haley Lu Richardson plays Erin, returning after running away seven years ago. Owen Teague plays Cal, the half-brother who stayed to clean up the mess. Set in Paradise Valley, Montana, and shot in 35mm wides by cinematographer Giles Nuttgens, this is a “small” story framed as grand, where the problems of three little people do amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. "Every night I wake up, and I think, 'that can't be what happened.'" Bleecker Street has revealed an official trailer for an indie drama titled Montana Story, the latest from filmmaking duo Scott McGehee & David Siegel. Two estranged siblings return home to the sprawling ranch they once knew and loved, confronting a deep and bitter family legacy against a mythic American backdrop. Starring Haley Lu Richardson & Owen Teague, with Gilbert Owuor, Kimberly Guerrero, Eugene Brave Rock, and Asivak Koostachin. This looks like a really lovely, heartfelt film. It’s often said that the Western genre is a barometer for the American psyche, with the best Western films reflecting the values and anxieties of the era in which they were made. If that’s true, “Montana Story” is a perfect example. The latest film from “The Deep End” directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel uses the Mythic West as a backdrop to examine repressed family drama and crippling medical expenses, topics that are certainly top of mind these days for many Americans. The indie filmmaking duo have not released a new film since 2012’s “What Maisie Knew,” but a new trailer for “Montana Story” suggests a welcome return to form for them. Watch it exclusively on IndieWire below.
The official synopsis for “Montana Story” describes the film as “a neo-Western with an emotional tremor hiding beneath it. Two estranged siblings (Haley Lu Richardson and Owen Teague) return home...

Western noir series “Dark Winds” ushers in the future of AMC post-“Walking Dead,” premiering June 12 on AMC and AMC+.
Set in the 1970s, “Dark Winds” centers on two detectives, Leephorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Chee (Kiowa Gordon), who are tasked with finding a murderer behind multiple homicides. Yet nothing is as it seems as the case takes a turn towards the spiritual.
Creator Graham Roland adapted the six-episode limited series based on the detective novels by Tony Hillerman. Star McClarnon is also executive producing, along with George R. R. Martin and Robert Redford. Martin expanded beyond his “Game of Thrones” universe with “Dark Winds.” Meanwhile, Redford has previously produced two other screen adaptations of the Leaphorn and Chee novels.
Showrunner and executive producer Vince Calandra of “Jack Ryan” and “Sharp Objects” fame helms “Dark Winds,” which also stars Jessica Matten, Rainn Wilson, Noah Emmerich, Deanna Allison, Elva Guerra, and Eugene Brave Rock.

Like its title, the opening shot of Montana Story tells us exactly where we are, as the morning sun peeks over the craggy mountaintops of Big Sky Country. But the sweeping landscapes here — captured by cinematographer Giles Nuttgens with a casual embrace of their beauty that never falls into the postcard trap of majestic awe — serve a different purpose. The idea that all the panoramic splendor equates to a sense of peace and belonging is called into question by damaged characters fumbling for perspective in Scott McGehee and David Siegel’s affecting drama, its tight ensemble led by performances of heart-searing sensitivity from Haley Lu Richardson and Owen Teague.
Since their head-turning 1993 debut with Suture, McGehee and Siegel have been making smart, distinctive movies about knotty family ties, notably the neo-noir The Deep End and an underappreciated contemporary Henry James adaptation, What Maisie Knew.

Cal (Owen Teague) arrives on a large Montana spread, his long face and hesitant gait foretelling what his father’s large wooden, picturesque home holds. When he enters, an overbearing beeping sound arises, and a kind-spoken Kenyan nurse named Ace (Gilbert Owuor) greets him. Cal’s father had a stroke. He’s now lying in the living room in a permanent coma attached to life support. The ranch isn’t in much better shape: A lapsed mortgage, no cattle, a 25-year-old stallion on its last legs, and a few chickens account for what remains.
Cal tries to shoulder the burden alone until his estranged sister Erin (a profound Haley Lu Richardson) makes an unannounced appearance. The pair haven’t spoken for seven years. Back then, Erin outed their father in the school paper as a lawyer covering up a toxic mess at a local mine. Their father attacked her, beating her nearly to death,...

Wonder Woman 1984 may have brought back Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor, but other than that, the sequel has a completely different supporting cast behind Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince when compared to 2017’s Wonder Woman. One star of the origins movie did appear, though, in a brief semi-cameo that’s easily missed. Of course, we’re talking about Lucy Davis, who played Etta Candy in WW.
Davis can be glimpsed in WW84 early on in the film when we see into Diana’s apartment and the camera focuses on a collection of photos that briefly tell us what the Amazonian has been getting up to for the past 70 years. Following her scene-stealing appearance in Batman v Superman, Wonder Woman finally gets her own movie. Yes, she brought the Junkie Xl theme with her, the whole thing revolves around the silly Dawn of Justice, and there’s an obscene amount of speed-ramping, but bear with it, because Wonder Woman is actually, refreshingly, breathtakingly good.
With a few additions, this origin tale tells the story of Wonder Woman as the comic book literate would recognise it: moulded from clay and raised as an Amazon warrior on the all-female island of Themyscira, Diana – daughter of Queen Hippolyta and King of the Gods Zeus – travels to the world of mortals...

Having earned over $800 million, Wonder Woman has proven itself on many levels. In a year that started, more or less, with Hidden Figures, and with a summer that had three hits featuring women (the others being Atomic Blonde and Girls Trip) the female half of the movie going audience is finally receiving their due. Director Patty Jenkins has certainly shattered some records and glass ceilings along the way while Gal Gadot has now proven she can open a movie.
With Wonder Woman out today on Blu-ray from Warner Home Video, we have a chance to look back and enjoy it all over again. While it fits neatly in the larger DC Cinematic Universe thanks to the framing sequence, the movie largely works on its own with a vastly superior tone and vision than its predecessors.

I’m not particularly well-versed in comic book-ese, so you’ll have to forgive when I say that the Mother Boxes from the DC Film universe are essentially their version of Marvel‘s Infinity Stones. Um….right? At least they are to me. Essentially, they are some powerful doodads and, more importantly, the villain Steppenwolf in “Justice League” will apparently be looking for them in the upcoming film. That’s probably all you need to know to get this new epilogue to “Wonder Woman.”
As director Patty Jenkins explains, this summer’s blockbuster didn’t have much in the way of deleted scenes, but this new sequence — featuring Lucy Davis’ Etta Candy, Saïd Taghmaoui’s Sameer, Ewen Bremner’s Charlie, and Eugene Brave Rock’s Chief Napi — creates a little connective tissue between “Wonder Woman” and “Justice League.”

Wonder Woman kicked butt and showed audiences everywhere that a superhero movie with a female lead can both draw audiences ($650 million worldwide and counting) and satisfy fans (Cinemascore: A). It's been a successful strike in the battle for more opportunities for women (the film had both a female star and director) and has saved the critical fortunes of Warner Brothers' DC Extended Universe (92% on Rotten Tomatoes). It's safe to say this movie was a home run.
That being said, there hasn't ever been a perfect movie, and once you get past the feminist positive vibes and shock of seeing a crowd-pleasing DC movie, there is a lot of room for improvement in the sequel. Here's my top five things that I'd like to see worked on:
1. Get Rid Of The Cheesy Villains
It's not that Ares, Dr. Poison, and a fictionalized Ludendorff (yes, he was something of a real person once!

With Wonder Woman sailing swiftly into the history books as the best-reviewed superhero movie ever with a $100.5 million opening weekend box office haul, the film has struck a chord with audiences and is currently looking to reign supreme for its second weekend in release.

Wonder Woman has proven her strength on the big screen as one of the world’s greatest superheroes, as well as the weekend’s greatest box office draw. Cutting through the competition, director Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman has taken in $223 million globally, and counting. The announcement was made today by Sue Kroll, President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
The impressive worldwide total makes Wonder Woman the largest female-lead superhero movie opening of all time, the biggest opening in June for a superhero movie, and the biggest opening in June for a Warner Bros. film. With a Certified Fresh rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is also one of the best-reviewed superhero films ever, and its CinemaScore of A shows audiences agree.

While walking into the anticipated screening of director Patty Jenkins' film Wonder Woman, two women were walking a few steps in front of me and one of them proudly said, "We finally have a superhero we can call our own." It's a pertinent comment because this Wonder Woman film is a huge step in the right direction for female-fronted superhero films, but also the DC Extended Universe, which has seen a string of disappointing superhero/antihero films, including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad.
Looking at the history of superhero/comic book films provides an even greater depth to the comment made by the two women walking into a predominantly male-driven character genre of film. And when you look at the comic book films that promote a female lead, the results are less than favorable. DC Comics' Supergirl was released in 1984 and starred Helen Slater,...

Wonder Woman is here to straighten things out, and put all those squabbling men in their place. A woman superhero movie was long overdue, and Wonder Woman is a terrific character. Many agree that Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman was the highlight of the ponderous Batman Vs Superman. Having a woman director, Patty Jenkins, at the helm is just that much sweeter.
The good news is that Wonder Woman is a much better movie than Batman Vs Superman and Gal Gadot is terrific in the role, particularly wonderful in the action sequences. While Gadot is perfect as Wonder Woman and the action sequences are spectacular, the bad news is that the film takes awhile to get rolling after a good start on the island of the Amazons, gets dull in the middle,...

The DC Cinematic Universe that Warner Brothers is sporting has had a bit of a rough beginning to it. Ever since the Christopher Nolan trilogy of Batman movies concluded, their attempt to reboot things with Superman and then Batman has been met with less than critical acclaim. Man of Steel had a mixed response, while both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad were outright panned. This week, however, they have what looks to be their first well reviewed blockbuster in Wonder Woman, which is notable for many reasons. Not only could it be righting the DC ship, it finally represents a big screen female superhero. A long time coming, no doubt. Luckily, expectations have been met, or perhaps even exceeded. Kudos to all involved. It took decades to make this one happen, but it was worth the wait. The film is an origin story for the world’s biggest female superhero.

There’s a sense of adventure lacking in some of the movies that derive from the DC Universe. It was something that Suicide Squad sought to rectify, but did so in such a contrived manner it backfired tremendously. But Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, captures that playful tone perfectly – and when the eponymous protagonist finds herself on Earth for the first time, it almost takes on the form of Christmas classic Elf. And yet such irreverence takes little away from the severity of the narrative at hand, in what is a fine return for the studio, and a completely self-contained endeavour that will appeal to pre-established fans and newcomers alike.
Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) is the Princess of the Amazons, spending her life on an idyllic, exotic island, learning to defend and to lead in anticipation of the eventual arrival of Ares, the God of War.

The narrative around Wonder Woman has been and will continue to be that of the first female superhero film of the current boom, beating the McU’s Captain Marvel to the punch and putting Patty Jenkins in the director’s chair. There’s a lot riding on the film to be a success, both for the Dceu and for anyone wishing to see more films like it in the future.
Because of this, and because the world is slightly unfair, it wouldn’t have been enough for Wonder Woman to have turned out average. If this film was to get a lukewarm reception, or only draw out female fans to cinemas rather than audiences across the four quadrants, then it’s likely this iteration of Diana Prince would be banished to only...

“Metropolis has Superman. Gotham has Batman. Now the world (almost) has Wonder Woman.” That was the tagline that accompanied last night’s fourth and suitably epic final trailer for Wonder Woman, Warner Bros. and Patty Jenkins’ standalone pic that’s due to grace theaters in little under a month’s time.
And though a fourth trailer may seem a little excessive, it’s worth keeping in mind that both Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and David Ayer’s Suicide Squad rolled out four full-length promos ahead of their respective D-days. For Wonder Woman, that date is June 2nd, and as Warner Bros. begins to switch gears in preparation of Diana Prince’s fantastical origin story – expect TV spots and behind-the-scenes featurettes to maintain the momentum from now until release, essentially – a new set photo has emerged online via Twitter.
