By day, Jay Faerber was a writer working on The CW’s Supergirl, dreaming up adventures for Superman’s cousin, Kara. By night, he was dreaming up a different sort of tale, one involving a rookie cop, a thief and extra-terrestrials. Those dreams are now a reality in a new graphic novel, which arrives Tuesday via Oni Press.
Area 510 centers on an Oakland police officer and a suspect he has just arrested … when an alien invasion hits the city. Handcuffed together, they attempt to cross the city to the police station, where the officer intends to book her despite the possible pending apocalypse.
In January 2020, Faerber teamed with artist Justin Greenwood, known for work such as Stumptown. They’d never met, but had long wanted to collaborate, and Greenwood quickly took to the pitch: What if the film 16 Blocks happened during Independence Day?...

If being Venom was like being in the Beatles, then Peter Parker would be Pete Best. His stretch of time in the late-80s wearing his living, black costume is a staple of his history. Before it turned Eddie Brock into a box office giant, the symbiote made for a badass variant look for Spider-Man that still holds up to this day. It’s the ultimate story of how we can lose ourselves to power, even if a loved one beat you over the head with lessons about responsibility.
Over the years, Spider-Man did rejoin with the symbiote a few times, usually in the name of heroism. In Venomized, a Venom symbiote from another reality bonded to him for a little while. At the end of Dan Slott’s lengthy Amazing Spider-Man run, Eddie Brock let Spidey borrow the symbiote so he could fight the Red Goblin (Norman Osborn as Carnage). These days,...

The first episode of “Crisis on Infinite Earths” arrived yesterday, and it proved to be stuffed full of references to the breadth of DC history. Obviously, you had the thrilling opening scenes that revealed iconic properties like the Batman 60s TV show and the 1989 Tim Burton movie were part of the Arrowverse’s multiverse. As if this wasn’t enough, though, there were many smaller easter eggs that you may have missed in between all the action.
Thankfully, writer/producer Jay Faerber, who worked on the event, was on hand to point one out to us during the commercial break last night. If you’ll recall, Wil Wheaton showed up in the episode as a doomsayer shouting about the end of the world, who was ultimately saved by Supergirl from an alien dragon. And Faerber explained that his sign was an exact match to the one displayed by a similar character in Superman II.

Supergirl Season 5, Episode 4
Good job, Jay Faerber & Jess Kardo, aka the writers of this episode. "In Plain Sight" represented Supergirl Season 5's best episode yet, seamlessly juggling the slow burn Leviathan arc and J'onn's family drama with the aid of some stellar character work, while also giving James Olsen the caliber of departure storyline he deserves.
J'onn's worst nightmare.
After J'onn's discovery last week that he was the person who wiped Malefic's existence from the Martian collective memory, our favorite Green Martian is living in his own personal hell, which is to say: he is in incredible pain, and he is not lessening the weight of that burden by confiding in anyone about it—not even when the topic comes up directly.

Secret Identities #4
Story by Brian Joines, Jay Faerber
Art by Ilias Kyriazis, Ron Riley

Published by Image Comics
Everyone has a plan in Secret Identities #4. Crosswind plans to use Gaijin’s human family as leverage, Ciniza plans on using her “Uncle” Vesuvius to protect her from a super-powered “villain,” and Rundown plans every nanosecond of his day. All those plans backfire.
Fans of the series might have noticed that several Front Line team members are absent in the list of misguided plans. This issue, half of Front Line takes a knee. Readers are then able to cozy up to Gaijin, Vesuvius, Punchline, and Rundown while secretly cheering for Crosswind’s scheme to pay off.
There are two main storylines, and one flashback story inserted in the middle of all the action.
The first revolves around Crosswind and Gaijin. After learning of Kayoto’s kidnapping, Gaijin is...

Secret Identities #3
Written by: Jay Faerber, Brian Joines
Art by: Ilias Kyriazis
Published by: Image Comics
After two issues of character introductions and a bit of backstory, Secret Identities # 3 gives readers what we’ve been waiting for, nefarious scheming.
Secret Identities #3 throws readers into the middle of The Example, a super charged villain, attacking a not so innocent civilian. Our favorite mole Crosswind, just happens to be in the New York area, and coincidently gets into a disagreement with The Example. Crosswind is knocked out during the fight and immediately returns to HQ once he regains consciousness. Still shaken by the thorough butt kicking he received, Crosswind appeals to Front Line’s natural desire to protect the innocent in order to seek out and contain The Example before anyone else dies.
During the team’s investigation, Crosswind uncovers a few things about Gaijin that he believes will come in handy when tearing Front Line apart.

Secret Identities #1
Story by Jay Faerber & Brian Jones
Art by Ilias Kyriazis
Colors by Charlie Kirchoff
Published by Image Comics
The idea of a mole infiltrating a superhero team is nothing new, but watching things unfold from the mole’s point of view is refreshing.
Secret Identities #1 introduces readers to an established team of heroes known as Front Line. The team is diverse, balanced, and flawed. For example, although Front Line claims they look after their own readers see how Diamond Jim is neglected after the loss of his legs. Flaws such as this provide a myriad of secrets for our young mole to dig up.
So who will readers be learning about? There are seven seasoned members on the team roster:
Luminary, the daughter of the president of the United States and leader of Front Line whose origin is kept
under wraps. Gaijin, an alien creature raised by mobsters.

Let’s start with some perspective: this was a huge week for comics. Marvel released no less than four relaunched #1 titles, including Brian Michael Bendis’s All New X-men. Image gave us Saga #7 and Walking Dead #104 in the same week. Dark Horse let loose with Victories #4, Creep #3, and Ex Sanguine #2. Even Idw’s amazing glamatron adventure from planet psychadelic, The Zaucer Of Zilk, released its #2 (of 2) issue, and Boom! Studios continued the awesome and snarky Extermination with a resounding #6.
This is a lot of material to choose from. And there is a lot of quality writing and art going on, here. On any other week I might focus exclusively on Image and Dark Horse and how they’re clobbering the hell out of the industry with excitement and innovation.
But then I read Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman #14, and well… everything else fell away in the wake of its utter awesomeness.

Near Death is one of the spate of high-quality comic books Image has been cranking out over the past couple of years, and I finally did myself the favor of reading it. Of course, now it appears the series has gone on hiatus just as I am getting on board (sad trombone). Fingers crossed that it starts up again and soon, but in the meantime, Near Death is a nice little jumping-off point for talking about comics for comics’ sake.
As life-long and deeply devoted supporter of the medium, I often bristle at the crossover into other media. Case in point: I work a couple days a week down at my local comics shop, which is next to a Papa John’s franchise. A couple years back, one of the pizzeria employees ducked her head in, as she would, and asked us if we had seen the new Ghost Rider movie.
