The Irrational TV series is based on Dan Ariely’s 2008 non-fiction book Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions. So far, the 8-episode season 1 revolved around Jesse L. NBC is sticking with Found and The Irrational.
The network has renewed both first-year dramas — one of just a handful of original scripted series to air on a broadcast network this fall — for second seasons. Both shows were developed off-cycle at NBC and thus had a full complement of episodes in the can before strikes by writers and actors led to dozens of productions shutting down in the summer and early fall.
The two series have also performed solidly for NBC: The Irrational, starring Jesse L. Martin, is averaging 6.34 million viewers per episode after seven days of linear viewing, while the Shanola Hampton-led Found clocks in at 5.18 million viewers (not including streaming for either show). They are also the top two broadcast series of the season so far among Black viewers, with Found ranking first.

NBC is making some early renewals.
The network has renewed both of its first-year drama series, Found and The Irrational for second seasons.
The fact that both shows had episodes filmed prior to the start of the broadcast season was a boon for NBC, allowing it to air new scripted series as many of its rivals pivoted to reality series and licensed programming as a result of the dual strikes.
The Irrational has aired seven episodes of its first season and has four more to go starting on Monday January 29 at 10pm. It is currently back in production on those episodes.
Found has currently aired nine episodes with two more to air before the end of the year. It will return on January 9 for its final two episodes of the season and has already finished production on those.

Exclusive: NBC has increased the order of new drama series The Irrational by one episode. Originally picked up for 10 episodes, the series starring Jesse L. Martin will now produce 11 episodes in its first season. Meanwhile, Season 2 of NBC’s comedy series Lopez v. Lopez will consist of 10 episodes, down from the previously ordered 13.
The adjustments come as NBC is fine-tuning its scheduling plans for midseason. The network will likely reveal its midseason premiere dates next week after CBS and ABC announced theirs over the last few days.
The Irrational had filmed 7 episodes when the strike suspended production. The drama is scheduled to resume production next week in Vancouver. It was initially supposed to shoot the three remaining episodes, now that number has gone up to four.

“The Irrational” is putting the power of free gifts to the test. In a new Episode 2 clip obtained exclusively by TheWrap, Professor Alec Mercer (Jesse L. Martin) walks his students though how to use the promise of free merchandise and trips to find someone who doesn’t want to be found.
The clip revolves around a brainstorming session between Alec and his two protégés, psychology grad student Rizwan (Arash DeMaxi) and grad student assistant Phoebe (Molly Kunz). The task? Draw a man out of hiding who doesn’t want to be found.
It only takes a moment before Rizwan suggests using the “power of free” to their advantage. The idea is that someone would be more willing to give up their location if they think they can get something for free out of the deal. Together, Phoebe and Rizwan figure out an organization their target has already accepted merchandise from — a website called ProChessFans.

I often wonder: if there weren’t any detectives on TV, what character archetype would producers turn to when they had to make interesting shows? Well, the new protagonist of Arika Lisanne Mittman’s show The Irrational isn’t really a detective but a behavioral scientist who lends his services to law enforcement agencies when they need help solving cases. Now, this area of deduction through the study of behavior is not unheard of, but making an entire show based on this particular area of interest implies that the show has enough tricks up its sleeve to surprise us. Based on Dan Ariely’s book Predictably Irrational the show revolves around a professor named Alec Mercer who works at the prestigious Wylton Institute for Advanced Hindsight. When he is not teaching, he seems to be working in dangerous environments, dealing with criminals with his knowledge and insights. The first episode...

Some might say that world-renowned professor of behavioral science Alec Mercer relies on theories, but, as he puts it in the trailer for NBC‘s new drama, “Gravity was just a theory at one point.” The Irrational, premiering Monday, September 25 at 10/9c and based on best-selling author Dan Ariely’s book, Predictably Irrational, follows Alec as he lends his unique expertise on an array of high-stakes cases involving governments, law enforcement, and corporations. His insight and unconventional approach to understanding human behavior lead him and the team on a series of intense, unexpected journeys to solve illogical puzzles and perplexing mysteries. The trailer offers a look at him being recruited to solve a murder (by the victim?!), teaching Applied Psychology 101, and explaining why he’s brought into cases. “I know people and why they do inexplicable things.” But no, he’s not “the science ...

Exclusive: NBC is keeping drama pilot The Irrational in contention a little longer. The network and producing studio Universal Television have extended the options on the cast, headlined by Jesse L. NBC continues to plow ahead with pilot orders.
The network has picked up two projects – Dean Georgaris’ agent drama The Blank Slate and The Irrational, Arika Mittman’s adaptation of book Predictably Irrational, to pilot.
The orders mean that NBC has now ordered six drama pilots for the 2022/23 season following the likes of the Quantum Leap reboot, missing persons drama Found from Nkechi Okoro Carroll, ranch drama Unbroken from Shaun Cassidy and a remake of Dutch drama series A’dam & Eva from Mike Daniels.
Written by The Brave creator Georgaris, Blank Slate is a high-concept procedural about a government agent who may not be what he seems.
Special Agent Alexander McCoy is a legend in law enforcement, the agent we all hope is out there, the agent we’d all like to be. The only issue is … he doesn’t actually exist. He’s a ghost, a phantom. So what...

Two films released, another film shot, and Steven Soderbergh managed to still watch and read a decent amount in 2019. (Note to self: barely using his Twitter account probably helps.) So a favorite tradition continues with today’s release of his annual viewing and reading log on Extension 765, which has a surprise, oddity, or some-such at nearly every turn.
Favorites include: making it through all 181 hours of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Too Old to Die Young in seven days but taking nearly four months to finish Sergei Bondarchuk’s War and Peace; Chinatown and Richard Lester movies appearing on yet another list; he, too, watching Fleabag; seeing a version of his next movie, Let Them All Talk, just under a month after principal photography commenced. And so on and so forth.

After things go really wrong in Alex Gibney’s documentary “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley,” one of his interview subjects jokes about developing a truth serum. Now there’s a million-dollar idea — maybe even a nine-billion-dollar idea. That was the astronomical valuation staked on a company called Theranos, founded by Silicon Valley darling Elizabeth Holmes, effectively making her the richest woman in the world. For tech startups, money like that is abstract, essentially fictitious. So, too, was Theranos’ Edison machine, a revolutionary diagnostic tool that promised to give patients a cheap way to test their blood for 200 diseases at their local drug store with just a finger-prick.
The Edison didn’t work. But that didn’t stop Holmes from reaping a fortune from investors — as well as the cover of Fortune magazine — because people wanted to believe. Especially in her. False belief, not phlebotomy, inspired Gibney’s blood-thirst to tell this story.

We humans like to believe certain things about ourselves: that we are good and honest people, for one. Sure, we might innocently add a few inches to our...height on online dating sites, or fudge our taxes, but we are essentially virtuous. (Dis)Honesty, a documentary by Yael Melamede about why we lie, shows the extent to which we fib (almost everybody does, it turns out, across nations and gender and social class). Perhaps most interestingly, (Dis)Honesty shows us how we rationalize that mendacity. Guiding us through the many forms of deceit is Duke University psychologist (and founder of the Center for Advanced Hindsight) Dan Ariely, a highly engaging and affable researcher whose lecture anchors us in the great web of fabrication that is humanity. ...

In "(Dis)Honesty - The Truth About Lies," behavioral economist Dan Ariely takes a look at the complex ways lies both big and small influence our lives and shape the world around us. In particular, it focuses on individuals whose lives are based in part or in whole on lies, and what happens when those lies are revealed. Director Yael Melamede said of working on the project, "[it] has helped me better understand the road to dishonesty, cheating and corruption - and how winding, slippery and dangerous it can be." The film will have its Us premiere at Full Frame, followed by Hot Docs and Montclair. Said Ariely of the timing, "Is there a better time to introduce a movie on dishonesty than in...

There has to be some kind of explanation behind the madness of America’s Toughest Sheriff.
Director Randy Murray took eight years to compose an entertainment documentary on America’s most controversial sheriff, Joe Arpaio. The film looks into his popularity, media manipulation, fear-mongering, racism, illegal immigration, free speech and the politics.

When you think of the overall Sundance docu selections, programmers may want to balance the hard-hitting slate with this, the curiously titled (Dis)Honesty: The Truth About Lies. Thanks to Dan Ariely’s bookshelf favorite “The Honest Truth About Dishonesty – How We Lie To Everyone, Especially Ourselves,” it benefits from an already built-in aud and via the smart talking heads package, it comes across as an intriguing-sounding “lite” docu experiment. In a Moneyball-ian kind of way, it treats moral and ethical flaws in making minor and major fibs almost in a data analysis argumentative measuring stick. Why finger point when everyone is accountable? Having recently landed some kickstarter funds for completion, we’re not sure if this talking heads package is in the final innings of the edit, but fittingly this is producer Yael Melamede’s (see pic above) first outing as a director – she produced a dozen of items...
