Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for Yulin Kuang’s new novel “How to End a Love Story,” which was released April 9.
Yulin Kuang was deep into her romance-novel era before she released her own first attempt at the genre, “How to End a Love Story,” last month. The debut author, who has thus far spent her career focused on TV and film writing, actually started penning her book while in the middle of adapting two rom-coms by best-selling author Emily Henry: “Beach Read” (which Kuang will also direct) and “People We Meet on Vacation.”
“How to End a Love Story” follows the straight-laced, successful author Helen and charming former jock Grant, who fall in love while working together in a TV writers’ room that is adapting Helen’s YA book series. Yulin Kuang knows she hit the literary jackpot.
The writer-director, whose credits include The CW’s I Ship It, Hulu’s Dollface and Netflix’s The Healing Powers of Dude, is adapting Emily Henry’s People We Meet On Vacation for film and writing-directing the forthcoming Beach Read film for 20th Century Studios. Henry has became a household name in the world of romance, with devoted fans eager to see how her love stories translate onscreen — even going so far as to share dream casting choices, trying to find Easter egg clues that would tease anything of what’s to come and stoking rumors about a potential Paul Mescal and Ayo Edebiri casting thanks to a photo Henry shared on social media.
While it can be assumed adapting those stories might come with added pressure, Kuang understands fans’ anxiety over whether the adaptations will be up to par.

Emily Henry fans had a field day last week when the author shared a St. Patrick’s day selfie of “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri and “Normal People’s” Paul Mescal.
While Edebiri posted the original image to her Instagram, it was reposts from Henry and screenwriter Yulin Kuang that made fans start to assume that the actors may have been cast in one of the films being adapted from Henry’s romance books: “People We Meet on Vacation,” for which Kuang is writing the screenplay; “Beach Read,” with Kuang writing and directing; or “Book Lovers,” being developed by the company that produced Mescal’s “Aftersun.”
The posts came just months after Mescal said in an interview that he hoped to star in a rom-com with Edebiri sometime in the next five years.

The list was read and curated by a group of anonymous readers, in addition to writer Lindsay Grossman and Olive Bridge TV exec Madison Jones, who launched the Love List last month.
“We were blown away by the response we got, especially in the Love List’s first year,” Jones told Deadline. “We were really encouraged by the quality of submissions sent our way. And we’re excited we’re able to highlight a lot of up-and-coming writers too.”
Grossman added, “Our hope is that these projects will be read by the industry at large and that they will ultimately be sold and produced. Coming out of a pandemic, and then a double-strike, we know there’s a need for stories that inspire and touch our hearts,...

The often familiar coming-of-age story takes on a wholly original perspective in this debut novel about an Indian immigrant, recently arrived post-college in Milwaukee, who must navigate a dreary corporate job and financial stress amidst the mostly unspoken-of trauma that’s left her without her family in her adopted country. The book — from the founder of the pandemic-era mutual aid group Bed-Stuy Strong — is heartbreaking and imbued with the occasionally hard-to-swallow realities of living in the margins, but ultimately hopeful.

In 2016, CW Seed broadcast an 8 minute per episode scripted web series based on Yulin Kuang’s short, I Ship It. In it, we met Ella, Tim, Shira and Sasha for the first time. Ella and Tim worked at a website overseen by Shira. After breaking up with her boyfriend, Ella and Tim began a band, eventually falling in love. Fast forward to 2019, and we’re now on season 2 of the TV version of the increasingly popular series. While the premise of the TV show remains roughly the same as the web series, there’s a couple of key differences.

Usually, a writer pitches an idea to a network. If they like it, they'll develop it. If that step goes well, they'll shoot the pilot. If it pleases the network, they order it to series. Some programs take a different path to air. Such is the case with the new I Ship It TV show. It was originally developed as a web short, and then CW Seed, The CW's streaming platform, ordered the first season. The network was impressed enough that they ordered a second season for broadcast. Will their faith in it pay off? Will I Ship It be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned. *Status update below.

Following in the footsteps of “Backpackers” and “Significant Mother,” Yulin Kuang’s “I Ship It” was developed for digital platform CW Seed but, come August 19 after two seasons of streaming, will receive a linear run on the CW network proper.
“We have conversations early on with both the production companies and the creators about, ‘Your show has the potential to go to broadcast,'” Rick Haskins, executive vice president, marketing and digital programs, The CW, tells Variety. “And so what we try to do is set some parameters around it that would allow it to go to broadcast.”
Some of those parameters are content based, as Haskins shares that “comedies and musicals probably have a better chance than e-sports, because of the nature of those shows.” But they are also cognizant of making them “different enough [to CW shows] that they have their own identity and hopefully bring in their own audience,” he continues.

Jeremy Shada has never seen “Rushmore” or “Election” (granted — he’s been busy as a working actor for the majority of his 19 years), but he plays politico teenager Tyler Prendergast with a magical combination of Max Fischer’s charisma and Tracy Flick’s moxie.
Tyler Prendergast is the anchor at the heart of “Mr. Student Body President,” a snappy and smart comedy that takes its teenage characters as seriously as they take student government. Tyler runs a tight ship at Berenger High, buoyed by his right-hand woman Hadley (Arden Rose), always to the dismay of his formidable principal (Christina Moore). Whether it’s a hall monitor strike, a problem with the peace treaty between the nerds and the jocks, or a power play from an upstart freshman, there is no problem Tyler and his team cannot handle.

As their first first viral video attests, Wesley Chan and Philip Wang have made it their life’s mission as filmmakers to prove one thing: Asian men are sexy. With Harry Shum Jr. (“Glee”) as the leading man in their new mini-series, “Single By 30,” the point is moot. It took years of working in network television, but Julie Miller finally created the rarest of media opportunities: An insurrection.
“Riot is an uprising,” said Miller, who serves as creative director for the YouTube channel, which is backed by Refinery29. “It’s a space for women to make comedy for everyone and not feel like they have to skew male.”
Fifteen years ago, Miller was double-booked as an intern at Saturday Night Live and Comedy Central. “I was interning for Tina Fey at Weekend Update, and I spent the other half of the week at Comedy Central assisting Jessi Klein in development,” she said. “I came to New York and immediately worked for two of the best female comedians, so the stakes were really high.”

In those jobs, Miller saw firsthand what content cable networks bought — and didn’t.

TV’s first leading gay superhero is coming next year to CW Seed.
The CW’s digital streaming service has announced plans to launch “Freedom Fighters: The Ray,” featuring the first gay superhero to headline a show in an animated series, next year. Based on characters from the DC universe, the show will be produced by Warner Bros.’ digital studio Blue Ribbon Content.
“Freedom Fighters: The Ray” comes to the CW from Berlanti Productions, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl”) and Marc Guggenheim (“Arrow,” “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”) at the helm.
That means “The Ray” will fall into DC’s The CW-centered Berlantiverse. (Berlanti is executive producer on “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Legends of Tomorrow” and “Supergirl,” all in the DC Universe.)

IndieWire’s Springboard column profiles up-and-comers in the film industry worthy of your attention.
The URL for Yulin Kuang’s YouTube channel is “yulinisworking,” a very fitting handle for this plucky young filmmaker, who hit the ground running out of college and shows no signs of slowing down.
Her series, “I Ship It,” based on her short film of the same name, premiered on the CW Seed this summer. New Form Digital produced the musical web series and helped Kuang shop it to the CW’s digital streaming service. With its musical aspect, “I Ship It” follows in the vein of shows like “Glee” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” Though the series bears some evidence of network tampering (it lacks some of the quirky originality that makes Kuang’s work stand out), the series stays true to Kuang’s values with a diverse cast and a nerdy girl protagonist.

One of the most commercially successful young adult franchises over the past decade has been the Twilight franchise, as the adaptations of the novels by Stephenie Meyer have drawn a sizable audience of the course of its four-movie run. With the last feature coming in 2012, news emerged last year that Meyer and Producing company Lionsgate would be revisiting the show’s universe with a number of short films.
This time around, however, the shorts themselves would be based on original stories set in the franchise’s universe, rather than adaptations of Meyer’s existing work. Joining Meyer and Lionsgate was the crowdsourcing platform Tongal and the organisation Women in Film, as the four groups combined to set up the contest. From over a thousand applications, the entries were whittled down to seven filmmakers, each of whom received $50,000 to make their short. A winner will be selected from the seven films,...
