Monday was move-in day for the writers of CBS’ Fire Country who spent the morning unpacking boxes in their new (larger) office space on the Radford lot, an upgrade from the crammed bungalow/trailer they occupied last year, possibly in recognition of Fire Country ending the 2022-23 as the most watched new broadcast series.
It was also a return-to-work day for the 11-member writing team (and support staff) of the firefighter drama on the day the first writers rooms reopened after the five-month WGA strike. It is led by showrunner/executive producer Tia Napolitano as well as executive producers Joan Rater and Tony Phelan who co-created the series with star/executive producer Max Thieriot.
As they all gathered around the table in their new writers room for the first time just after lunch, the group shared their thoughts about the strike and starting work on the new season after a...

Did you know that there are four brand new short films written and directed by Wes Anderson that are adapted from short stories by Roald Dahl and available for you to watch on Netflix right now? It would not surprise me in the slightest if you didn't. I know short films are not the biggest attention grabbers, but this is one of the best and most recognizable American auteurs taking on the work of one of Britain's most beloved authors of the 20th Century. Surely, you would want the word to get out there about this, especially given how successfully Anderson previously adapted Dahl's work with his stop-motion adaptation of "Fantastic Mr. Fox." Alas, Netflix made the plans for these shorts very unclear and definitely did not effectively communicate their release strategy, with one coming out every day for four days. The first short, "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,...

Wes Anderson, the acclaimed director of The Grand Budapest Hotel and Fantastic Mr. Fox, has returned to the world of Roald Dahl with a series of four short films based on the British author’s lesser-known stories. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, The Swan, The Rat Catcher and Poison are all now streaming on Netflix, offering a diverse and delightful showcase of Anderson’s signature style and Dahl’s imaginative storytelling.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular character, a wealthy and greedy bachelor who discovers a book that teaches him how to develop extraordinary abilities. With his newfound powers, he embarks on a global tour of casinos, cheating his way to fortune. But along the way, he also encounters a moral dilemma that changes his life. The film is narrated by Ralph Fiennes, who also plays multiple roles, including Roald Dahl himself.

I was introduced to Wes Anderson in my early days of cinephilia. It was quite easy to get mesmerized by his distinctively aesthetic style, which happened in my case. I quickly became a fan, and in no time, I ended up watching most of his works. One thing that I particularly noticed is that as time went by, his work became more about flaunting his own style than the substance of it. My own cinematic senses also kept evolving, and with time, I sort of lost interest in Anderson’s brand of cinema. His recent works, the likes of The French Dispatch, and Asteroid City, didn’t help the case either. I still admire the aesthetics of Wes Anderson, but his cinema doesn’t excite me anymore, which is where I stood until I watched the four new shorts of Anderson on Netflix, all based on Roald Dahl’s short stories.

Plot: Wes Anderson directs an all-star collection of short films based on the work of Roald Dahl.
Review: What exactly is Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar? When the famed director was first linked with this Netflix adaptation, everyone assumed he would be making a feature, but that’s not what this is. It’s one of four short Roald Dahl shorts Anderson has dropped on Netflix, which, taken together, roughly add up to perhaps a 70-minute (or so) anthology film.
It’s a fun experiment for Anderson and, surprisingly, perhaps his most successful work since The Grand Budapest Hotel. The centrepiece of this loose quadrilogy of shorts is The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar itself, which runs about forty minutes and teams the director with Ben Kingsley, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Ayode and Dev Patel for the first time (all of whom play dual roles).

Minority Report is the latest Hollywood blockbuster to get the stage — and gender-swap — treatment.
The science fiction tech noir based on Philip K. Dick’s 1956 novella and later made into the 2002 box office hit directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise, is being turned into a play that will make its world premiere in the U.K. in spring 2024. The show is part of a co-production between three U.K.-based theaters in association with Simon Friend Entertainment and by arrangement with Electric Shepherd Productions.
Adapted by actor-writer David Haig with Life of Pi‘s Max Webster set to direct, the new stage play will hold its world premiere at Nottingham Playhouse, opening on Feb. 16 and running through March 9. It will then have two more separate runs, first at Birmingham Repertory Theatre from March 22 to April 6, followed by a month-long staging at London’s Lyric Hammersmith between April 19 and...

Looks like we have the latest trend of turning movies and shows into stage plays headed our way. We've already got Stranger Things looking to extend its pop cultural footprint beyond TV screens, and Paranormal Activity is also being turned into a stage show. You can add Minority Report to the list.
Minority Report, loosely adapted for the screen from Philip K. Dick's 1956 novella The Minority Report and directed by Steven Spielberg, the 2002 movie sees Tom Cruise as Chief John Anderton, part of a special police unit is able to arrest murderers before they commit their crimes, an officer from that unit is himself accused of a future murder.
They derive their information from "pre-cogs," people born with special pre-cognitive abilities (Samantha Morton plays the main pre-cog), but Anderton soon discovers that something is very wrong with the system.
While Paranormal Activity, with its found footage angle, sounds enough...

Detective Kim Taek Rok has been a dynamic, courageous, and passionate police officer for a long time, and criminals fear him. Taek Rok never followed the rules, and because of his reckless behavior, he never got promoted. In Shadow Detective Season 1, Taek Rok was shown to have developed panic disorder and was in the early stages of dementia. Taek Rok had been blaming himself for all the colleagues who’d lost their lives. He believed that whoever worked with him always ended up in danger, while he survived any casualties. He started getting severe panic attacks for the same reason, but given his work experience, he was still allowed to work in the force. The previous season ended with the death of Officer Kook Jin Han, aka “The Friend,” who tricked Taek Rok. All of this happened to catch Chairman Jang, who not only killed Jin Han but also took his own life later.

The latest to join the cast of upcoming sci-fi/horror Companion for New Line Cinema is Rupert Friend, Deadline reports today.
Friend joins previously announced cast members Sophie Thatcher, Harvey Guillén (“What We Do in the Shadows”), Lukas Gage (“You”), Megan Suri (It Lives Inside), and Jack Quaid (Scream, “The Boys”).
Announced back in February, Barbarian director Zach Cregger is producing Companion for New Line Cinema. Described as a sci-fi/horror movie, Companion will mark the directorial debut of Drew Hancock, who also wrote the script.
At this time, plot details remain under wraps.
Rupert Friend most recently starred in William Brent Bell’s 2021 horror movie Separation, pictured above, as Jeff, the single father struggling to piece together a new life for daughter Jenny (Violet McGraw) when the puppets from his comics seem to take on a life of their own. The actor can currently be seen in Wes Anderson...

The sci-fi thriller Companion is coming our way from writer/director Drew Hancock and the team behind last year’s horror hit Barbarian, and for the last month they have been assembling the cast. We’ve previously heard that Jack Quaid (Scream 2022), Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows), Lukas Gage (You), Megan Suri (Never Have I Ever), and Sophie Thatcher (The Boogeyman) will be playing roles in the film – and now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Rupert Friend (Asteroid City) has also been cast in Companion.

Rupert Friend, currently on screens in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, has joined Sophie Thatcher in Companion, the sci-fi thriller from the team behind last year’s horror hit Barbarian.
The New Line feature begins production this month and has been filling out its call sheet at breakneck speed. Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri and Harvey Guillén all have signed on in recent weeks.
Drew Hancock wrote the original script and is making his directorial debut with the feature, the many plot points of which are being kept hush-hush. It is, however, being described as self-contained, and Thatcher is set to play a character who is more than meets the eye.
Friend’s character information is being kept in the dark, but suffice it to say the actor won’t be living up to his last name.
Zach Cregger will produce the feature along with Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures.

If anyone knows how to get the right shade of red for Black hair, it’s Camille Friend. The Oscar-nominated hair department head, whose credits include “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” experimented with adding color into Lupita Nyong’o’s hair, and now she’s doing it again. This time, it was for Halle Bailey in Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid.” But doing so didn’t come cheap.
Her challenge was taking Disney’s most famous redhead, Princess Ariel, and creating a look for Bailey that would work. On top of that, maintaining Bailey’s natural hair was an important requirement she needed to meet.
Bailey, who sports long locs, wanted to stay true to her Black heritage. And maintaining them without a wig would herald an important moment for representation and Bailey’s identity, as the movie presents Disney’s first Black Ariel (and first Black princess in a live-action movie.

Wake up, Mr. West. It's your birthday!
On "No More Parties in L.A." off The Life of Pablo, Kanye West describes himself as "a 38-year-old 8-year-old," which is maybe a perfect summation of the qualities that have made the 40-year-old rapper such an enigma: a larger-than-life icon who has cultivated a persona that draws as much infamy as it does reverence, with a head-spinning number of acclaimed tracks to show for it.

Somehow, as Kanye has gotten older, his almost youthful sense for defiance and creativity have created work that has only gotten more experimental, more groundbreaking, and with each new album, inspired a new crop of artists of hip hop and of music in general.
