Amazon Prime Video has canceled “Paper Girls” after one season.
The series was produced by Amazon Studios and Legendary Television in association with Plan B. It is based on the graphic novel series of the same name written by Brian K. Vaughan, illustrated by Cliff Chiang and published by Image Comics.
“Paper Girls” begins in the early morning hours after Halloween 1988, when four newspaper delivery girls — Erin (Riley Lai Nelet), Mac (Sofia Rosinsky), Tiffany (Camryn Jones), and Kj (Fina Strazza) — are out on their route when they become caught in the crossfire between warring time-travelers, changing the course of their lives forever. Transported into the future, they must figure out a way to get back home to the past, a journey that will bring them face-to-face with the grown-up versions of themselves. While reconciling that their futures are far different than their 12-year-old selves imagined, they are being hunted by...

Paper Girls is no more. Amazon’s adaptation of the best-selling graphic novels written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Cliff Chiang may have received positive reviews, but reviews aren’t everything. Deadline has reported that Paper Girls has been cancelled after just one season on Prime Video.
The coming-of-age sci-fi series kicks off in the early morning of the day after Halloween in 1988 and follows four young women who find themselves transported to the future where they encounter grown-up versions of themselves. Despite the cancellation, Paper Girls may not be totally dead. Sources told Deadline that Legendary TV plans on shopping the series around. The series dropped on Prime Video last month, but some feel that it never got a fair shake as Amazon was in the midst of a massive marketing campaign for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

This Paper Girls article contains spoilers.
Like Damon Lindelof’s take on Watchmen before it, Paper Girls takes a beloved comic work and expands its possibilities for the small screen. Streaming now on Amazon Prime Video, the eight-episode debut season captures the heart, fun, and general sci-fi mindfuckery of the source material. More than that though, it doubles down on the saga’s core humanity by taking time to explore the rich inner lives of Mac, Kj, Tiffany, and Erin as they are thrown into a decades-spanning adventure that puts them in conflict with everything from their future selves to the realities of their mortality.
Part of the reason this adaptation is so successful is that Paper Girls‘ comic creators Brian K. Vaughan (who wrote all 30 issues) and Cliff Chiang (who illustrated them) serve as executive producers on the series. Their involvement both legitimizes and endorses the show, which ambitiously...

Exclusive: A 1980s pop culture mainstay is plotting a comeback. AMC Networks is developing a Max Headroom drama series reboot, with Matt Frewer set to reprise his role as the world’s first artificial intelligence TV personality. Halt and Catch Fire co-creator Christopher Cantwell is writing the adaptation and is attached as showrunner for the project, which is produced by Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah’s SpectreVision and All3Media.
Known for biting commentary, quick wit and manic glitching, the supposedly computer-generated TV host played by Frewer was first introduced in the 1985 British cyberpunk TV movie Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future. He became an instant pop culture phenom and went on to host a music-video show, star in ads for New Coke, appear on the cover of Newsweek and headline his own primetime series. Max Headroom aired on ABC for two seasons from 1987-88. At that point, the character’s massive popularity started to wane,...

Amazon’s Paper Girls features time travel, a burgeoning interdimensional conflict and giant robots straight out of Pacific Rim. It’s certain to earn everybody’s lazy comparisons to Stranger Things, though it feels essential to mention that Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s Image Comics series predates Netflix’s exercise in ’80s teen nostalgia.
You can’t describe Paper Girls without talking about its science fiction spine. That, however, is not the thing. It’s the thing that gets you to the thing.
If you don’t get that reference, get thee to a streaming platform that carries Halt and Catch Fire immediately. If you got the reference, but wonder why anybody would use a Halt and Catch Fire reference to describe a show that’s Stranger Things — sorry, it’s unavoidable — by way of The Baby-Sitters Club, it’s notable...

Let’s get this out of the way now: The comparisons “Paper Girls” will get to “Stranger Things” are inevitable, but not especially fair.
Yes, “Paper Girls” also opens in the 1980s with four 12-year-olds on bikes who end up tackling otherworldly forces way bigger than themselves. But by the middle of the first episode, “Paper Girls” — which was a comic book series before “Stranger Things” was a TV show, anyway — turns itself inside out to become something else entirely. Suddenly, what at first looked like yet another throwback Amblin-esque series reveals a more bittersweet lens, and harder science fiction heart.
As written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Cliff Chiang (both executive producers on this show), the original “Paper Girls” comics developed a devoted fanbase thanks to its sharp characterization, unsparing twists, and Chiang’s angular imagery rendered in fluorescent pinks and blues by colorist Matt Wilson. The Amazon adaptation,...

This Paper Girls review contains no spoilers.
The main thing working against Paper Girls — Amazon’s mostly excellent TV adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s multiple Eisner-winning Image Comics series — is Stranger Things. Seeing how both chronicle the adventures of 1980s pre-teens who are unwittingly thrust into supernatural conflicts in which the fate of humanity is at stake, some comparisons are bound to arise. This, combined with the fact that Stranger Things is the hugest thing in genre television in recent memory, means that the negative/most vocal aspects of fandom are right now sharpening their Demogorgon-esque claws to dismiss Paper Girls as a derivative rip-off of the blockbuster series.
Not only would this be wrong but wholly inaccurate, as Paper Girls (the comic of which actually pre-dates the Netflix juggernaut by a year) is its own original entity that shares only the most surface and fleeting...

If adaptations of Brian K. Vaughan’s comic books didn’t have terrible luck with timing, they’d have no luck at all.
Vaughan has co-created some of the most acclaimed, beloved comics of this century, but they have tended to involve such elaborate concepts and dense storytelling that they’ve taken an incredibly long time to journey from page to screen. As a result, they’ve arrived in other media at the worst possible moments. Runaways, about the rebellious teenage children of a group of supervillains, debuted on Hulu...

AMC has opened a writers room for 61st Street, a potential drama series from BAFTA-winner Peter Moffat, Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society and AMC Studios. The project is being developed as part of AMC’s “scripts-to-series” model, which opens writers’ rooms to produce multiple backup scripts for pilot scripts the network is high on. In success, the projects that have gone through a writers room move to straight-to-series orders.
AMC usually has two “pickup” seasons — winter and summer — when it selects projects to open writers rooms. 61st Street is part of this winter season, joining Rainy Day People, from the Halt and Catch Fires team of Chris Cantwell, Christopher C. Rogers, Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein, and Kevin Can F*** Himself (working title), from Valerie Armstrong, Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, which were designated for “scripts-to-series” consideration in November.

AMC is moving forward with development on two series prospects, opening writers rooms to generate scripts for series projects from Rashida Jones and the creators of “Halt and Catch Fire.”
AMC for several years has taken the step of establishing a small writers room for some of its development projects. AMC has opened writers’ rooms for two new potential series — one a comedy from Rashida Jones and another a drama from executive producers on “Better Call Saul” — the cable network announced Friday. Jones’ project, with the working title “Kevin Can F*** Himself,” hails from creator Valerie Armstrong and explores the secret life of a woman we all grew up watching: the sitcom wife.
Here’s the potential series logline, per AMC: A beauty paired with a less attractive, dismissive, caveman-like husband who gets to be a jerk because she’s a nag and he’s “funny.” Our series looks to break television convention and ask what does the world look like through her eyes? James Franco is reportedly in talks to direct an upcoming adaptation of James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales’ 2011 nonfiction book “Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN” (via Collider). The book provides an oral history of the creation of ESPN, the network that has dominated sports news since its creation in 1979. Collider reports Focus Features is behind the project.
In addition to Franco being eyed to direct, “Halt and Catch Fire” co-creator Christopher C. Rogers is being tapped to rewrite the script. The story centers around the efforts made by ESPN creator Bill Rasmussen and his son, Scott, to launch the 24-hour sports network. Bennett Miller was originally hired to write the screenplay in 2015, which is described as being in the same vein as “Moneyball” and “The Social Network.”
The report is notable since Franco has not announced any major directing projects since being accused of sexual misconduct in January.

When Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers, who at the time were working in social media for Disney, pitched their show to AMC the premise was rather simple. Joe MacMillan (Lee Pace) was the slick Don Draper-like (Jon Hamm) antihero of the early Wild West days of the personal computer industry. Each season, the visionary but dangerous salesman would lead a team racing to achieve some game-changing technological breakthrough, if the interpersonal debris he left in his wake didn’t stop them.
“You can see [our green-ness] in the first season,” said Cantwell when he and Rogers were guests on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “I feel like we were trying to copy shows we loved in the beginning, but halfway through that season we found our own voice. [I feel like you] see us starting to make moves that are moves we like, and I feel like that’s a direct reaction to us...

The 2018-19 broadcast television season made strides with on-screen diversity, but there is still considerable progress to be made off-screen.
During the “Inside a Writers Room: Power Dynamics” at the Atx Television Festival Saturday, moderator/executive producer Glen Mazzara acknowledged the panel — which consisted of Liz Tigelaar, Christopher C. Rogers (“Halt & Catch Fire”), Shawn Ryan, Rina Mimoun, and Patrick Sean Smith (“Greek”) — was white, plus had more men than women. He asked the group what they could do to be more inclusive with their writers’ rooms going forward.
Rogers, whose first room experience was on “Halt and Catch Fire,” the show’s natural evolution during season 1 into an ensemble led to the writers being more cognizant that there needed to be better representation in the room.
“We decided going forward, we needed to be at least fifty percent in the writers’ room and behind the camera,” he said. “That is...

Staffing and running a writers room has never been quite as challenging as it is today.
That was a resounding theme Saturday afternoon during an Atx Festival panel in Austin, Texas, centered on the power dynamics inside writers rooms. On hand for the discussion were six past and present showrunners including Liz Tigelaar (Little Fires Everywhere), Christopher C. Rogers (Halt and Catch Fire), Shawn Ryan (Timeless), Rina Mimoun (Everwood) and Patrick Sean Smith (Greek), as well as moderator Glen Mazzara (Damien).

Sometimes you know what you’ve got before it’s gone, and that’s certainly the case for these dearly departed shows. IndieWire watched every one, some for years at a time, others for the few short weeks they were with us. Ranging from award-winning series to one-and-dones, 2017 saw a slew of great programs come to a close.
Below, we’ve taken note of their legacies one last time. If you were a fan, here’s one more chance to gush over your favorite show. If you’ve never heard of a few of these, we’ve listed where you can watch them right now. They may be over, but that’s no reason to stay away. If anything, now you can go at your own pace from beginning to end.
Enjoy. Remember. Watch. Now then, onto the list.

Television is a medium known for its personal connections and incomparable scope. The same set of characters can tell stories for decades, visiting your home upwards of 20 times per year for so many years they feel like family members. Daunting at the onset and comforting in the long-run, the best TV shows are the ones that stick with you because you stuck with them.
As more and more programming floods the airwaves, competition is rising. Seasons don’t have as many episodes. Shows don’t run for as many years. Greetings are savored because goodbyes are often just around the corner — or, at least, they feel like it.
So it should come as no surprise that time plays an integral role in the best television series of 2017. From the exciting new friends found in “American Vandal,” “Dear White People,” and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” to the beloved vanishing faces in “Halt and Catch Fire,...

1. “The Crown” Season 2 (available December 8)
Why Should I Watch It? “The Crown” is the new ruler of Netflix. With “House of Cards” on the outs (take that as you will), the streaming giant’s other big-time awards player is assuming, ahem, the crown. Peter Morgan’s historical drama may not be for everyone — period drama fans will swoon, while anyone looking for surprises will snooze — but it’s an unequivocally well-made show, with pristine production design and impeccable performances. Sure, you may wish for more corgis and less melodrama, but the stuffiness is largely overshadowed by astonishing grandeur. This will be a perennial awards player for the foreseeable future, so you may as well try it out.
Best Episode: Season 2 lacks an obvious standout — Season 1’s arguable choice would be the penultimate episode, “Assassins” — but I’d argue Episode 4 of Season 2, titled “Beryl,” is the best of the lot. Focusing on Princess Margaret,...
