If this week's episode of the Empire Podcast seems even more incoherent than usual, that's because it was recorded very early in the morning. Mind you, that doesn't explain why Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara and James Dyer are incoherent at the best of times, but we digress.
In this episode, our intrepid trio tackle a listener question about Dodgeball 2 and end up answering a completely different Q; discuss the week's movie news, including almost everything that emerged from CinemaCon; and review Peter Pan And Wendy, Polite Society, and The Unlikely Pilgrimage Of Harold Fry. Chris also has lovely chats with the stars of that movie, Jim Broadbent and Penelope Wilton, and David Lowery, director of Peter Pan And Wendy, who reveals his love of Event Horizon. Do you see? Yes, we see. Enjoy.

San Diego Comic-Con’s first-ever Comic-Con@Home comes to a close Sunday, ending a five-day lineup of almost entirely prerecorded virtual panels.
San Diego Comic-Con 2020 was canceled in April due to the coronavirus pandemic, marking the first time the annual pop culture event won’t happen as planned in its 50-year history. In May, Comic-Con International revealed it would be holding a free virtual con in lieu of the traditional in-person con.
The online convention, dubbed Comic-Con@Home, will take place July 22-26, the same time span during which San Diego Comic-Con would have been held. Between 300 and 400 virtual panels are planned for the event.

Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman finally arrived on Netflix this week. The highly-anticipated and long-in-development gangster film sees Scorsese, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci reuniting for the first time since Casino and it’s also the first time Scorsese and Al Pacino have ever worked together (if you can believe it).
And the film is apparently living up to all the hype according to critics. With a 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, folks are praising The Irishman as an epic and meditative story about mortality.
See for yourself below:
“It’s a cinematic tour de force in form and substance, representing late-career high points for director Scorsese and his lead actors Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci,” says the Toronto Star’s Peter Howell.
“There are 209 minutes in The Irishman and not one of them is wasted,” says Chris Hewitt of the Minneapolis Tribune.

Kaarin Fairfax and Chris Haywood in ‘Skewwhiff.’
Chris Haywood is so committed to making a thriller based on the Australian novel The Crossing he has agreed to produce as well as star in the feature film.
First-time feature director James Khehtie sent the novel by B. Michael Radburn to the actor, who loved the premise: Taylor Bridges flees from Victoria to an isolated Tasmanian town to work as a park ranger after his daughter disappeared, triggering the breakdown of his marriage.
When a young girl who was the same age as his daughter vanishes, Bridges, a chronic sleepwalker, begins to wonder what happens when he sleepwalks.
“I did not want to produce but James insisted,” Haywood tells If, recalling that he has served as a producer only once before, on writer-director Peter Watkins’ 1991 feature doc The Media Project, which critiqued Australian media coverage of the first Gulf war.

If your parents won't listen to you, maybe they'll pay attention to Maverick.
Mission: Impossible - Fallout duo Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie posted an urgent message on Twitter last night from the set of Top Gun 2. Some late casting news, perhaps? Had a wild-eyed Kenny Loggins turned up to set with a fishing rod and a chicken? No, something far more urgent needed to be addressed: motion smoothing. The default setting on your television that makes everything look like an episode of Guiding Light from the 1980s needs to go away for good, and Cruise and McQuarrie want to play their part.
“If you own a modern high-definition television, there’s a good chance you’re not watching movies the way the filmmakers intended, and the ability for you to do so is not simple to access," Cruise explained in the Public Service Announcement, before McQuarrie...
