From Ben Willbond, Jim Howick, Mat Baynton, Larry Rickard, Martha Howe-Douglas, Kiell Smith-Bynoe and Charlotte Ritchie, here are their personal picks of the BBC show’s best episodes...

Andrew Haigh’s touching new drama All Of Us Strangers was the big winner at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).
As the calendar year draws to a close, we’re also inching close toward the season that will see multiple prestigious awards bodies, in theory, hand the best films of the year a golden statuette. Lolly Adefope and Kiell Smith-Bynoe hosted the event which celebrated British cinema, especially the slightly lesser-seen films with budgets far smaller than that of Oppenheimer. There were some terrific films nominated this year, and the roster of winners was as surprising as it was satisfying.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Ghosts UK Season 1, Episode 1, “Who Do You Think You Are?” & “Gorilla War.”] Ghosts UK has landed stateside as the original inspiration behind CBS‘s fan-favorite Ghosts made its Season 1 debut on the network. As with most TV influences, Ghosts UK strikes a strong resemblance with its American counterpart — which debuted on CBS in 2021, two years after UK‘s launch in 2019 — as viewers are introduced to Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe), a young couple who are searching for a new home when they get an exciting call. Alison has inherited Button House, a home full of restless spirits. Sound familiar? While Alison and Mike may be the counterparts to Rose McIver‘s Sam and Utkarsh Ambudkar‘s Jay, they are their own characters with their own quirks. Unlike Jay, Mike isn’t a chef, and Alison’s career isn’t quite defined when we meet her either. All we know is ...

We all know and love Ghosts, but the original young humans who inherit a specter-stuffed mansion are in this 2019–23 British comedy. You’ll notice some familiar characters — U.K. spouses Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) parallel the U.S.’s Samantha (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) — as well as a strikingly similar setup. (Credit: Mark Johnson/Monumental Pictures. Copyright Monumental Television. All Rights Reserved) “All of those house-share sitcoms contain people that are in a situation they are stuck in. Ghosts is the ultimate version of that. They are stuck together for hundreds of years, and none of them can leave,” says cocreator Laurence Rickard, who plays U.K.’s caveman spook Robin and the detached head of another ghost, Tudor nobleman Sir Humphrey Bone. In back-to-back episodes, Button House’s dead residents “meet” the new owners and, hearing the couple’s plans for a hotel conversion,...

For the last five years, January has meant one thing to the cast of Ghosts: trundling over to West Horsley Place in Surrey to film the next series. Not in 2024. The BBC comedy’s final episode is set to air this Christmas, and after that, what do this in-demand lot have planned?
Plenty, it turns out. They’ll be popping up on screen and stage, as well as writing new projects both individually and together. As Larry Rickard told Den of Geek, “It’s not like we’re [famously fractious 70s soft rock band] The Eagles and we hate each other!” A Ghosts reunion down the line “wouldn’t be a mountain to climb,” says Rickard. “It’s a door that’s shut but obviously, doors have hinges and handles.”
And ghosts can just walk through them, we venture? “Well exactly, they haven’t even got to go to the effort of opening them.”

Miriam Margolyes, who played Professor Sprout in the “Harry Potter” film franchise, is lending her voice to a new kids project titled “Badjelly,” Variety can confirm.
Based on the Spike Milligan children’s book “Badjelly the Witch: A Fairy Story,” the animated series will bring to life Milligan’s original tale about two siblings who go searching for a lost cow – and stumble upon a cast of magical creatures.
Margolyes is set to play Badjelly in the project, who is described as “the wickedest witch in all the world.” When she bumps into brother and sister Tim and Rose on their adventures in the great black forest high jinks ensue. Tim will be voiced by Malachi Hall (“The Flatshare”) while Ava Diakhaby (“Shortland Street”) plays Rose.
The 13-part series is aimed at 7-11 year old and is set for delivery in 2025. The show is already in production.

Larry Rickard doesn’t speak French. “I’m terrible with languages!” he tells Den of Geek. When a Ghosts series five storyline in episode four “En Francais” called for his caveman character to speak fluent French, Rickard had to learn his lines phonetically “from a very kind French friend of the producer who recorded everything.”
The result was impressive. To the surprise of the viewers and the Button House ghosts – who’d just reached the point of thinking their afterlives held no more surprises – Robin turned out to be a talented linguist.
“The speech centre of his brain is tiny,” explains Rickard, “but what he’s had is a lot of time to see a lot of stuff, so, he sounds dim but he’s actually smart.”
One of the things Robin saw during his long afterlife was Lady Sophie Bone, the discontented French wife of Sir Humphrey (the other...

Warning: contains plot details for Ghosts series five episode two “Home”, and smut.
BBC One’s Ghosts is one of the few TV shows around that has successfully blurred the line between adult and child viewing. Kids love it, adults love it, and it’s long been appointment viewing for families doing that (almost miraculous in 2023) thing of gathering together around the same screen.
Making Ghosts’ comedy suitable for a mixed-age audience though, means keeping an eye on its adult content. The ruder gags need to be blink-and-you’ll-miss-them and cheeky, but never crass. The sordid circumstances of Julian’s 1990s Tory MP sex scandal death for instance, or Lady Button’s husband’s “Moroccan tea party” with two members of his household staff, are alluded to but never made explicit. The same goes for caveman Robin’s romantic exploits over the centuries, and his (cough) close relationship with his sister.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for series five of Ghosts
Somehow, the final series of Ghosts has neatly tied up all the show’s loose ends while still leaving us wanting more – which is a jolly good thing considering they’ve confirmed we’re getting one more Christmas special in December 2023.
They really packed a lot into those last six episodes, revealing the heartbreaking truth behind the deaths of Kitty and the Captain, showing Alison and Mike’s next step in life, and giving the whole gang the opportunity to say all the lovely, touching things fans wanted to hear (as well as adding a poignant reference to Mary in the opening credits).
Taking the characters on these final journeys involved lots of flashbacks and new faces, so let’s recap all the most important guest stars from series five:

“Birthdays or chicken?” Jim Howick asks Simon Farnaby on stage at the BFI Southbank. The first two episodes of Ghosts’ new series have just screened to a packed auditorium, where they were met by a reception that was – what’s a bigger word than rapturous? Euphoric? It may have been mere months since Taskmaster series 15 ended, but the brand-new series 16 feels like it’s arrived at just the right time, giving us a chance to escape endlessly depressing talk of the latest celebrity criminal revelations and our world leaders’ somewhat “lalala can’t hear you” approach to climate change.
There’s a lot to live up to after the excellent last series, but Taskmaster series 16 has a promising line-up that fits the show’s tried-and-tested dysfunctional family dynamic. The ‘mum and dad’ figures of Julian Clary and Sue Perkins are joined by three distinctive ‘kids’: the ditsy persona of Lucy Beaumont, the intelligent fun of Susan Wokoma… and Sam Campbell, who is completely bonkers.
Although he’s probably the least UK-famous of this batch of contestants right now, he’s got serious comedy chops, winning the top prize at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2022 and appearing in some great sitcoms.

2023 has already given us series 15’s perfect line-up – a gem of a season with Jenny Eclair’s endless joy, Kiell Smith-Bynoe’s cheeky competitiveness, Mae Martin’s cool smarts, Frankie Boyle’s affable bemusement and Ivo Graham’s adorable self-loathing keeping us laughing all the way through to summer.
And there’s not long to wait now until series 16 arrives. The new run of 10 episodes is confirmed to start airing weekly on Channel 4 and Channel4.com from Thursday September 21 at 9pm. That means – interruptions notwithstanding – the series finale should arrive on Thursday November 23, which is traditionally when the next line-up is announced.
But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. The series 16 Taskmaster line-up comes first and back in June, was confirmed as comprising Julian Clary, Lucy Beaumont, Sue Perkins, Susan Wokoma and Sam Campbell.

A young married couple inherit a mansion that turns out to be populated with lively spooks. Sound familiar? Of course, but before CBS’s hit sitcom Ghosts came, the 2019 U.K. version, which CBS will air back-to-back with the U.S. comedy reruns. Beyond the couple (played by Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe), let’s meet the “new” ghosts. Mary (Katy Wix) The kind 17th century peasant was burned at the stake during witch trials (hence the ash on her face). Whenever she passes through humans, they smell burning. Kitty (Lolly Adefope) This forever-positive Georgian Black woman seeks pals to counter a painful upbringing by an adoptive white family. Cause of death yet to be revealed. Patrick “Pat” Butcher (Jim Howick) The sweet Adventure Club leader was killed in 1984 by an arrow through his neck, like his U.S. counterpart, Pete (Richie Moriarty). Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone is saddling up for its broadcast debut after joining CBS‘ fall schedule. The upcoming slate features a handful of notable series and reality-based programs, including Seal Team and BBC’s Ghosts. The reworked plan is a product of the ongoing strike, which finds writers and actors picketing in front of major studios worldwide.
Concerning how CBS roped Yellowstone onto its schedule, whispers indicate the arrangement could have come from MTV Studios, which produces with 101 Studios. The first season of Yellowstone airs on Sundays, replacing The Equalizer at 9 p.m. The reworked schedule also hosts Seal Team, the hit military drama starring David Boreanaz. Seal Team slips into the Thursday 10 p.m. slot, a spot initially reserved for the new series Elsbeth, a spinoff of The Good Wife/The Good Fight. The Paramount+ docuseries FBI True also comes to the lineup alongside repeat episodes of FBI.

The cast of ‘Yellowstone’
CBS’s 2023 fall primetime lineup will look vastly different from previous years. Due to the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes, production has been shut down on scripted series and films. Given the lack of new episodes of its normal nighttime shows, CBS is diving into programs that have aired on Paramount+. Plus, the network’s leaning heavily on unscripted series and game shows.
Yellowstone starring Kevin Costner, Wes Bentley, Kelly Reilly, and Luke Grimes will make its debut on broadcast television this fall. Season one will air on Sundays on CBS, five years after premiering in June 2018 on Paramount Network.
Paramount+’s Seal Team season five will run on CBS on Thursdays, and FBI True makes the move from Paramount+ to CBS on Tuesdays this fall. And the original U.K. Ghosts, which inspired the American version, will take up a spot on CBS’s lineup on Thursdays.

Yellowstone is set to make its broadcast debut as part of CBS’ fall schedule, which now includes a slew of reality series as well as a number of Paramount+ series such as Seal Team and the original UK incarnation of Ghosts.
The launch of Taylor Sheridan’s Kevin Costner-fronted drama, which is coming to an end with its fifth season, as revealed by Deadline, on Paramount Network, is the headline of CBS’ reworked schedule, which has been impacted by both the writers strike and, now, actors strike.
It’s not entirely clear how CBS managed to find a way for the Montana-set series, which streams on Peacock, to air on its network, but insiders said that given it comes from sister company MTV Entertainment Studios, which produces with 101 Studios, it was able to be worked out.

Taskmaster was originally a hard sell. Channel execs worried that audiences would be bored by the cast not changing every episode. “People didn’t think viewers would tune in the next week to see the same comedians,” creator Alex Horne told Chortle, “we had to persuade them it was more like a sitcom than a panel show. Because actually, people got to know each contestant.”
Casting Taskmaster – in which five comedians compete in absurd challenges, wrangled by Alex Horne for the approval of Greg Davies – like a sitcom was one of the show’s many masterstrokes. If task-setting is all about encouraging a range of approaches (it’d be dull if everybody beautifully destroyed a cake in the same way) then the same goes for the series cast. Different personalities, from cool customers to chaos merchants, batty enthusiasts, neurotic overachievers, and ‘let’s fuck it all off’ rebels are required to clash and bond.

Warning: This contains spoilers for all series of Taskmaster, including Series 15
Series 15 of Taskmaster has been delightfully ruthless already. So far we’ve had Ivor Graham sabotaging Kiell Smith-Bynoe in the first Live task and Greg Davies letting all the contestants get away with touching things in a task that said “you must not touch anything at any point”.
Then, in episode 4, the show joyously almost descended into full anarchy both over the definition of “throwing” and what a banana is (more on this later).
We suspect Taskmaster fans will be arguing over #throwgate for a while, but it’s not the first controversial decision to go down in the show’s history. In fact, for many, the mere mention of the words “potato”, “hula hoop” and “Mark Watson” are enough to trigger an epic Taskmaster rant to this day. Let’s take a look back at some of the show’s most questionable rulings.
