Nine years after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road and nearly 45 years after his original Mad Max movie debut, George Miller brought Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The movie has raised eyebrows for the spectacular action sequences and the gravity of the origin story of the title character after the movie’s premiere at Cannes.

Cannes audiences also honored the Miller-directed movie starring Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiorsa with a seven-minute standing ovation. Further, the critical accolades were an indicator of the fact that Furiosa would be the next big hit in the franchise. However, the expectation of the movie took a U-turn when the movie debuted in the theaters on 23 May.

The weak first-weekend performance of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is concerningly indicative of larger issues with the Hollywood box office. Note that the latest flick, under the direction of George Miller, is a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. Sure, the stellar cast that it brought together made the movie one of the most anticipated of the year, especially in the film enthusiast community.
Thus, one can’t help but wonder: What magic could Charlize Theron have woven had she returned as the indomitable Furiosa in Miller’s ambitious saga? Sadly, her absence in the anticipated prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, is obvious.

Forty-five years after George Miller introduced audiences to Mad Max, the auteur may have finally hit the end of the road through the postapocalyptic wasteland unless he finds some high-octane gasoline soon.
The revered filmmaker’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga bowed to a disappointing $32 million domestically for the four-day Memorial Day weekend and $36.5 million overseas, diminishing hopes for Mad Max: The Wasteland, another Max installment Miller has been toying with for years.
Miller and Nico Lathouris wrote the scripts for both The Wasteland and Furiosa as part of the development process of Mad Max: Fury Road, the 2015 Warner Bros. film that became a surprise awards season juggernaut, winning six Oscars, and which became an instant action classic. The Wasteland would follow Max Rockatansky in the year before Fury Road, and is said to involve a young mother — and (naturally) include plenty of action.

Anya Taylor-Joy is back in action with the Mad Max franchise in an anticipated project, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga alongside Chris Hemsworth. Given that Charlize Theron initially portrayed the role in Mad Max: Fury Road, many are praising the former with which she embodied the latter’s legacy with her spectacular acting prowess.

As far as iconic franchises go, George Miller’s Mad Max films are right up there among Hollywood’s favorite films. Miller created the dystopian action series back in 1979 with Mel Gibson, which was followed by 2 successful sequels in the 80s.

It seems like any time a younger version of a character appears on screen, we can’t help but immediately compare with the one we’re more familiar with. How often have you said, “That looks nothing like them!”? And while digital de-aging can be done to achieve the desired outcome (depending on the age gap), modern technology has offered yet another way: yes, we’re talking about artificial intelligence. And that’s just what was used to get Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Brown in Furiosa to match as closely as possible.
Appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show (via Variety), Anya Taylor-Joy said that Furiosa presented the opportunity for the filmmakers to try something out. “George Miller had the idea very early on. The audience was already getting used to a new Furiosa,” referring to herself taking over the role as a younger version of Charlize Theron’s character. “He...

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Box Office (Worldwide): Debut Weekend Collection Update, Earned Significantly Less Than Mad Max: Fury Road(Photo Credit –IMDb)
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has underperformed at the box office, and the actual numbers are here. George Miller directed the film, which features Anya Taylor Joy and Chris Hemsworth as the lead actors. It is both a prequel and a Mad Max: Fury Road spin-off. Keep scrolling for more.
It was a long weekend; the movie got an extra holiday due to Memorial Day. It clashed with The Garfield Movie at the box office, and it was a close fight between the two films for the #1 spot. The post-apocalyptic might be praised, but it is still insufficient as the film’s debut global collection is significantly less than 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. The Anya Taylor-Joy starrer Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was released earlier this week to positive responses. Though the film seemed to have had a less-than-stellar opening at the box office, most fans seemed to have been impressed with George Miller’s return to the Wasteland. The film is a prequel/spinoff to Mad Max: Fury Road.
Taylor-Joy replaced Charlize Theron in the prequel as a younger Imperator Furiosa. The film follows Furiosa’s childhood in the Green Place and her eventual admission into Immortan Joe’s Citadel. However, a much younger Furiosa was played by Alyla Browne, whose features were reportedly fused with Taylor-Joy’s with AI.

Following the release of MCU’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, audiences were bewildered with the movie since it was nothing like what they had expected from the 2016 movie’s sequel. However, Stephen Strange’s investigation of the multiverse in 2022 certainly set up a potentially exciting focus for the third movie.

George Miller has finally released the much-awaited prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth in the lead roles and focuses on Imperator Furiosa and her origins. The film features many fan-favorite characters from Mad Max: Fury Road such as Immortan Joe, Furiosa, and others.
While the film has been received well by the audience, fans seem to have been irked by the film’s Cinemascore from critics. The action extravaganza features some creative action sequences and some of Miller’s trademark elements that had made the franchise beloved. However, fans seem to be annoyed with Cinemascore’s B+ rating for the film.

Ready, steady, go! But be warned, this article contains spoilers for "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga."
Long before 2015's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and its particular brand of vehicular mayhem peeled into theaters, promptly changing the action genre forever, director and mastermind George Miller had already mapped out an origin story for what would turn out to be the blockbuster's scene-stealing star: Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa. It only took the better part of a decade to finally see that vision realized on the big screen with this year's utterly epic "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," but the lengthy hiatus wasn't the biggest obstacle standing in Miller's way. Since the prequel was always meant to depict the earlier years of Furiosa's life, a new actor would have to face the daunting — if not impossible — challenge of stepping into Theron's shoes.

Anya Taylor-Joy took upon the role of Furiosa in the spin-off and prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, titled Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The film is the fifth overall franchise and focuses on the titular character which was originally played by Charlize Theron. After Charlize Theron’s exceptional performance as Furiosa, all eyes were on Anya Taylor-Joy to see how she would live up to her predecessor.

Typically, reboot film franchises don’t surpass the originals. The first films are so iconic and firmly entrenched in the popular consciousness that the reboots get dinged for any changes they make — and sometimes the changes they don’t make. But there are exceptions — just check the “Planet of the Apes.” And maybe no film series inverts this trend more than “Mad Max.”
For decades, George Miller’s Australian apocalypse series was an iconic apocalyptic action series that helped create an entire sci-fi aesthetic in its own right. Starring Mel Gibson pre-fame, the trilogy of films from 1979 to 1985 were fondly remembered as an iconoclastic action franchise, with the second entry in particular often cracking lists of the best in the genre.
And yet, when Miller resurrected the franchise in 2015, he miraculously came back with a film that eclipsed all of them in respect and attention. “Mad Max: Fury Road” wasn...

Plot: Stolen from her people as a child and forced to witness her mother’s execution, young Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) sets out on an epic quest for vengeance against the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth).
Review: George Miller’s Mad Max series contains not one but two of the most incredible action movies ever made. Sure, there’s Fury Road, but there’s also The Road Warrior. Both are masterpieces of their genre, so the bar has been set pretty high for Miller’s return to the Wasteland. The early reviews seem overly concerned that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga isn’t a replay of Mad Mad: Fury Road, with it telling an epic, fifteen-year tale, the likes of which has never been attempted in the series before. From the 1979 original onward, all the movies told relatively compact stories, so Miller and co-writer Nico Lathouris deserve praise for doing something different.

This article contains spoilers for "Furiosa."
In the medium of cinema, sequels still feel like a relatively recent phenomenon, especially as studios continue to seek to exploit intellectual property and squeeze as much blood (re: money) out of the same stone as possible. Yet despite the obvious capitalistic aims of film franchises, cinematic universes, and what have you, the tradition of continuing a story and/or telling new tales featuring evergreen characters is very ancient.
The "Mad Max" films, as conceived by the series' mastermind, George Miller, deliberately seek to continue those ancient, mythical traditions of storytelling rather than service more modern concepts of how to present a serialized narrative. Of course, this may not have always been the case, given that the original "Mad Max" from 1979 was made partially to exploit then-popular trends like the criminal biker film, the vigilante action movie, and so on. In 1979, George Miller made his feature debut with Mad Max, a modest, near-future indie about a cop taking on a biker gang. More than four decades later, amazingly, he’s still playing in that insane sandpit. Furiosa represents a lot of things: an epic slice of myth-making, a Homeric odyssey that broadens the ever-expanding dystopian world in which it is set; a prequel to 2015’s Fury Road, a historically exceptional action movie which may never be bettered; and perhaps the most ambitious film Miller has ever made.
It is a lot. Where Fury Road was set over a mere 36 hours, this story spans 15 years. Where Fury Road was singular, unstoppable action ecstasy, this is more episodic tension, divided into five chapters, each with cryptic titles like ‘The Pole Of Inaccessibility’. Let's get one thing out of the way before we head into a ranking that I'm sure people will be Very Normal About: George Miller's "Mad Max" saga is one of the most consistently great franchises in cinema history, and when it comes to the top three especially, all of these titles can easily swap placement depending on the day or a person's taste. In fact, we at /Film ranked the "Mad Max" films in 2022, but the ranking on the list you're reading today has shifted quite a bit. For one thing, Miller has unleashed "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" onto the world in the time since, and the original trilogy of films is no longer being swallowed whole by the frenzied hype of "Fury Road."
Miller made his feature directorial debut with the first "Mad Max" film in 1979, and the continued installments have only gotten bigger, bolder, and (usually) better.

“Garfiosa”? “Furiofield”?
Whatever the portmanteau for this Memorial Day weekend’s dual release of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “The Garfield Movie,” the two newcomers are aiming to jolt the sluggish summer season.
“Furiosa,” the fifth entry in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic “Mad Max” series, looks to lead the way with $40 million to $45 million from 3,750 venues over the four-day holiday weekend. Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” should trail in second with $30 million to $35 million from 4,000 venues between Friday and Monday. Box office comparisons to the same holiday weekend in 2023 will be tough given that Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” remake took the crown with $118 million.
Warner Bros. spent $168 million on “Furiosa,” not including the many millions to market the movie. It’s not expected to live up to the debut of its predecessor, 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which captured $45 million over three days. That film, led...

There will be moviegoers at the Memorial Day weekend box office; the industry can be thankful for that. Just not as many as the previous two years when the entire 4-day frame exceeded $200M+.
With Warner Bros’ prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Alcon/Sony’s The Garfield Movie hitting marquees, the volume of event product increases, which is good thing. Okay, Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy’s differences actually led to a lot of uncomfortable situations on the set of ‘Fury Road’ and, even though they both delivered great performances for the movie, director George Miller still doesn’t think there’s an excuse for it.

Almost nine years to the day since Mad Max: Fury Road premiered in Cannes, George Miller returns to the Croisette with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. It’s a deafening roar of a film, full of the same improbable vehicles and breathless pursuits through the director’s signature dystopian outback, though now told through a lens that can feel a bit slick at times. It tells the story of how Imperator Furiosa (immortalized by Charlize Theron in 2015 and gamely reinterpreted here by Alyla Browne and Anya Taylor-Joy) came to be, tracking her journey from childhood and the Place of Abundance––an Edenic oasis of renewable energy and worrying red apples––to hardened warrior in the wastelands of Bullet Farm, Gastown, and The Citadel of Immortan Joe. The concerns that met the trailer––suggesting Miller had traded in his predecessor’s practical effects for CGI––are, I’m sorry to say,...

The max in “Mad Max” stands for maximizing profit potential?
George Miller, the maverick 79-year-old Australian director, brought the fifth entry into his dystopian action franchise, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” to the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival this week.
While it’s been nearly a decade since “Mad Max: Fury Road” – the film that introduced the one-armed automotive avenger Imperator Furiosa, initially played by Charlize Theron but Anya Taylor-Joy in the prequel – Miller says he may not be done with stories set in the “guzzoline”-obsessed Wasteland.
“There are certainly other stories there. Mainly because in order to tell the story of ‘Fury Road’, we had to know the backstory of Furiosa and Max in the year before,” Miller said, revving up the engines of devoted fans. “That was a tool for the cast and crew. George Miller had to grind the pedal to get “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” finished in time for its global release next week.
Appearing at press conference at the Cannes Film Festival, auteur Miller discussed the tight deadline sitting beside his cast including Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke.
“We only finished the film two and a half weeks ago,” Miller told global reporters. It hits theaters on May 24. Taylor-Joy gushed about the incredible group of artisans — a team of 1,300 people — many of whom have worked on four other “Mad Max” films with Miller.
“People came out of retirement to work with George,” Taylor-Joy said. Her director piped in, saying, “I came out of retirement to work on this film.”
Australian pride was a major theme of the conference, as Miller fully embraced Australian accents on the production. Miller said his inspiration for the entire film series came from an analog childhood in Queensland.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the fifth installment in George Miller’s celebrated action franchise, had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday night and was greeted with a seven-minute standing ovation in the Grand Lumiere Theatre as Miller and members of his cast, including stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, looked on.
Furiosa, a $168 million film that Warner Bros. will release in the U.S. on May 24, comes nine years to the month after the most recent prior installment of the franchise, Mad Max: Fury Road, which starred Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy, and 45 years after Miller’s original Mad Max film became the most profitable film of all time to that point (grossing $100 million on a $350,000 budget).

Since their beginnings in 1979, George Miller’s hyper-jacked Mad Max movies with Mel Gibson had not received a single Oscar nomination, not even for Tina Turner’s great signature song “We Don’t Need Another Hero” in 1985’s Beyond Thunderdome. But then, 30 years later, when finally the fourth and Gibson-less edition appeared, the snooty Academy got on board and gave the newly regenerated Mad Max: Fury Road 10 nominations including for Best Picture and Director. It won six of them, virtually sweeping the crafts categories.
Nine years later comes a prequel, Furosia: A Mad Max Saga, and Miller, now seemingly ageless at 79 (he was 34 when the first one came out) has perhaps given birth to the greatest Max yet, a wheels-up, rock-and-rolling epic that delivers the origin story of the title character Charlize Theron picked up in Fury Road when she was about 26.
That movie only covered about three days total.

“Mad Max” mastermind George Miller considered using de-aging technology so that Charlize Theron could star in his “Fury Road” prequel “Furiosa,” but says “it would have been difficult” to pull off. Instead, he opted to cast someone new in the role of Imperator Furiosa: Anya Taylor-Joy.
In a Variety cover story on Taylor-Joy and “Furiosa,” which premieres on Wednesday night at Cannes Film Festival, Miller said he had observed de-aging used in movies like Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” and Ang Lee’s “Gemini Man” starring Will Smith.
“Both of them were masterful directors, but it was never persuasive,” Miller said of the technology. “I thought all people would be watching is Charlize looking young and knowing it’s an effect. And as time went on and we got into litigation with Warner Bros, we had to find someone younger.”

The shooting of Mad Max: Fury Road was notoriously troubled by its two lead stars’ feud: Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron failed to work well together and had conflicts on the set, proving to be quite a difficult combination for director George Miller. Recently, the director spilled the beans on the Hardy vs. Theron feud and explained what had happened between them back in 2014.
Tom Hardy Proved Difficult to Work With
What sparked the conflict between the two lead stars was Tom Hardy’s consistent lateness to the set. Her co-star’s irresponsible behavior frustrated Charlize Theron beyond measure, and she called him out on being “disrespectful.” Hardy’s response was harsh (though unknown), and Theron requested a female mediator to present at all times when the two actors filmed scenes together.

Megyn Kelly has become quite a controversial figure over the years. However, there is no denying that she played an important role in the Fox News scandal against the founder, Roger Ailes, during the MeToo movement. This was perfectly depicted in Charlize Theron’s 2019 film, Bombshell. The film was an exceptional success, even winning an Academy Award, and the journalist seemed to agree with this.

It’s no secret that Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron did not mesh while making 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, with the actress saying she at times felt “scared sh*tless” by his behavior, which included everything from showing up whenever he pleased to coming off as downright aggressive in the way he spoke to her. And while sometimes a little tension on the set can lend to the movie, it can also be extremely toxic and uncomfortable to work around. Now, George Miller – who is on the promotional circuit for prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga – is once more speaking about what went down on the set of Fury Road more than a decade ago.

Labeled as one of the greatest action movies of all time, 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron as the leads and George Miller at the directorial helm is an undeniable masterpiece. Featuring countless occurrences of impeccable practical effects, cinematography, and stunt choreography, the film stands as a visual extravaganza. Additionally, the post-apocalyptic wasteland vibes attached to it found grit and surrealism owing to the acting performances by its actors.

The making of "Mad Max: Fury Road" is the stuff of legend, as chronicled in Kyle Buchanan's wildly entertaining book, "Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road." That being the case, it's only to be expected that the cast and crew of the new prequel film, "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," would have some tall tales of their own to regale about what went into the making of director George Miller's return to the Wasteland. Doubly so for star Anya Taylor-Joy, who follows in Charlize Theron's footsteps by bringing the titular battle-hardened, shaved-headed, metal-armed, stoic post-apocalyptic warrior to life as a young woman in the movie.
Contrary to the nature of the "Mad Max" universe, Miller himself is renowned for running safe sets and has never been accused of abusing his actors or otherwise mistreating the members of his crews. The...

It's no secret that Venom's Tom Hardy and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Charlize Theron clashed on the set of 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road. However, there have long been conflicting reports about exactly why the actors struggled to get along.
Hardy's method approach to playing Max Rockatansky may have been one point of contention, as was his frequent lateness to set. That resulted in a heated confrontation which saw Theron call her co-star a "f***ing c***" before he squared up to her; the consequence of that was the Oscar-winner demanding she have a female producer on hand at all times.
They've both since acknowledged their respective failings, with Hardy admitting he could and should have done more to foster a healthier working relationship with his co-star.

With his “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel movie “Furiosa” gearing up for both its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and its theatrical release later this month, director George Miller recently spoke to The Telegraph and reflected on the notorious feud that broke out between stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron during the grueling “Fury Road” production. Miller said at the center of the feud was the simple fact that “they were just two very different performers.”
“Tom has a damage to him but also a brilliance that comes with it, and whatever was going on with him at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his trailer,” Miller said, more or less confirming reports that Hardy’s tardiness drew a wedge between him and his co-star. “Whereas Charlize was incredibly disciplined – a dancer by training, which told in the precision of her performance – and always the first one on set.

The Mad Max movies are always a crazy fiasco of action, adventure, and chaos against a backdrop of a post-apocalyptic desert wasteland. Known for their horrendous and exhaustive shoot, the movies are not easy to film and the characters are definitely not easy to portray. Imperator Furiosa is, in my humble opinion, one of the most important characters to hit the big screen in the last 20 years. She represents a justified rage often denied to women in post-apocalyptic films, a physical capability typically reserved for men who have been shaved down from slabs of meat on a GyroKone, and serves as a protector of the five wives — a woman looking after other women who are treated as little more than a form of currency. When "Mad Max: Fury Road" director George Miller expressed a desire to make a standalone epic prequel focusing on Furiosa, fans were thrilled at the prospect. Charlize Theron beautifully brought Furiosa to life, so it was only natural that she'd be brought back for the film.

Anya Taylor-Joy is set to play the younger version of the taciturn metal-armed warrior Imperator Furiosa, earlier played by Charlize Theron, in the upcoming film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Director George Miller picked Taylor-Joy after an audition where she nailed her performance of a portion of the 1976 film Network. She believed that Miller cast her in the role due to the one quality that she portrayed in her versatile roles.

Some actors wait for years to feel like they’ve truly made it in Tinseltown. But for Nicholas Hoult, all it took was a little spit on his face from the Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron.
Indeed, Hoult may have just become a real actor in Theron’s eyes after she “spat” on his face during a scene in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) but the film continues to be a gift that keeps on giving nine years later. The post-apocalyptic action epic helmed by George Miller has consolidated its place in pop culture with its prequel flick (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), set for release later this month.

Well, in 2020, Hoult and Theron engaged in a Q&a session following the special screening in Los Angeles, where the former recounted a memorable scene from Mad Max: Fury Road.

Fans were clearly devastated after the announcement that Charlize Theron is no longer returning to lead the upcoming post-apocalyptic film Furiosa, but director George Miller has a very logical reason for this decision.
Anya Taylor-Joy in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
The prequel franchise is now led by Anya Taylor-Joy who portrays the young version of Furiosa. There had been ideas of using CGI on Theron to de-age her, but this was ultimately scrapped by Miller.
George Miller Explains Why He Replaced Charlize Theron In Furiosa
During his interview with Variety, filmmaker George Miller explained how using CGI won’t do the job for Furiosa. He noted that, while the technology is a great option, it has its limits.

After tremendous success with critics and general audiences, the Mad Max franchise is all set to return to the big screens with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the prequel to 2015’s Fury Road. And, as fans must have already come to know by now, the currently raging Hollywood hotshot Anya Taylor-Joy has replaced Charlize Theron for the iconic titular role of the imperator.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
While this decision was previously only accepted by fans because this film would see a younger version of the Furiosa we saw in Fury Road, it feels like Taylor-Joy has not only performed up to the mark but even surpassed many expectations. If anything, fans should brace themselves to be shocked, because Taylor-Joy can make you believe that Theron has returned to the saga!

Anya Taylor-Joy plays the younger version of Imperator Furiosa, a character earlier played to perfection by Charlize Theron, in the upcoming George Miller film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Taylor-Joy had a rough six months shooting for the film in the wastelands of Australia, often sacrificing her sleep and weekends for the same. She revealed that when she watched the unedited black-and-white footage of the film, she couldn’t even go through the first three minutes without crying.

If you want to become a dystopian feminist warrior, you’re not going to get much sleep. That was one of the first things Anya Taylor-Joy learned on the set of George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel “Furiosa.” Under heavy coats of makeup, shooting in the Australian winter when daylight was scarce, Taylor-Joy wished she could have stayed in bed at least through the crack of dawn. Instead, she’d rise up in the middle of the night, ready to do battle.
“I had the earliest call time of my life: 1:45 a.m.,” the 28-year-old actress says on a recent Los Angeles afternoon. “I’d be like, ‘I just wrapped! What do you mean?! It’s a mistake!’” Taylor-Joy recalls the painful mornings now with a gleeful theater-kid energy. She chronicled her entire transformation as Furiosa, and took photos of her various makeup tests. She flips through her phone to show me.
