Emma Thompson looks set to do a bit of fishing and foil a kidnapping in The Fisherwoman: more on the film here.
The resurgent trend of action movies named after day-to-day jobs and activities continues. This year alone, Aaron Eckhart has been The Bricklayer, and Jason Statham as – of course – The Beekeeper.
Now though, step forward Emma Thompson. I’ve long wondered if she might take an action project, and it appears that’s what’s happened. Not just any one either: she’s going to headline The Fisherwoman.
I’m in already, for the avoidance of any doubt.
Filming is getting underway on the film this very week, and it’ll tell the story of Thompson’s widowed fisherwoman, who interrupts a kidnapping. Laurel Marsen, who was in Ms Marvel, will play the teenager who was about to get kidnapped until Emma Thompson rocked up. But there’s more to this than that,...

The era of toy movies has arrived. Weeks ahead of the official release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, the iconic toy company Mattel has made headlines for even more toy-inspired flicks in the works, including an “A24-type” movie about Barney and, now, a “gritty” film adaptation of Hot Wheels produced by J.J. Abrams.
In a new report from The New Yorker offering a run-down of the upcoming media projects Mattel is engaged in, fans received a preview of what the forthcoming Hot Wheels film will be like. The project — produced by Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot — was first announced over a year ago in April 2022, and will reportedly be “emotional and grounded and gritty,” though the script has “yet to materialize.”
“For a long time, we were talking to Mattel about Hot Wheels, and we couldn’t quite find the thing that clicked, that made it worthy of what Hot Wheels — that title — deserved,...

Fresh off a standout performance in director Sophie Hyde's affecting drama, "Good Luck To You, Leo Grande," Emma Thompson is set to dramatically switch things up. The esteemed actress will soon play the role of "a widowed fisherman" who becomes involved in a teen's kidnapping in the action thriller "The Fisherwoman." Announced via Variety in early February, the film will be directed by Brian Kirk, who's known mostly for his work on TV shows including "Luther," "Dexter," and "Game of Thrones." And while little is known about the project at this time, it's intriguing if only for Thompson, who continues to make diverse and interesting role choices.
The actress has always sought out challenging projects. When asked for her advice to up-and-coming actors, she told BAFTA back in 2013, "Make your choices carefully and don't do things just because they might pay well, do the things that really interest you.

It’s a June morning at 20th Century Fox, and the scenes flashing on the big screen in the Newman Scoring Stage are disturbing: White police officers are hurling tear gas into a crowd of mostly black protesters. Forty musicians supply the mood — at first unsettling, then intense, finally melancholy.
Composer Dustin O’Halloran, at a mixing board behind the glass, tells his string players via intercom that “the build is really important in this whole section, but those first four bars should start out kind of fragile.” Conductor Nicholas Jacobson-Larson leads the musicians through another take of cue 6M5. Piano and synthesizers, already recorded, add drama.
The film is Fox’s “The Hate U Give,” out Oct. 5 and likely to be among the most talked-about films of the year — and an Oscar contender. Music, says director George Tillman Jr., was critical. “We’re doing a movie about police brutality and about identity,...

Strongman will focus on the man inside of Vader's suit, bodybuilder David Prowse.
David Prowse’s connection to the Star Wars universe is impressive. Most impressive. As the man that physically embodied Darth Vader inside of that iconic black getup, Prowse was a part of a team including James Earl Jones, Sebastian Shaw, and Bob Anderson that brought one of cinema’s most famous villains to life in the original Star Wars trilogy.
Yet, Prowse’s “eccentric” behavior led to him being banned by George Lucas himself from attending official Star Wars conventions. Despite the controversy, Prowse will find himself as the subject of the upcoming biopic, Strongman.
Strongman was written by Nicholas Jacobson-Larson and Dalton Leeb (The Well) and earned a spot on this year’s Black List, a Hollywood-curated list that chronicles the best unproduced screenplays of the year.
