Welcome To Wrexham has everything; Hollywood stars, a working class town in Wales searching for glory on the pitch, a sweary manager. We take a closer look at TV’s best docuseries.
Nb: The following contains mild spoilers for Wrexham AFC’s current season.
If you’re not watching Welcome To Wrexham, you’re truly missing out. Granted, it’s not exactly Game Of Thrones, but it might be one of the best things on telly currently. I’ve always found it difficult to tune into documentaries and docuseries, but Welcome To Wrexham has become a weekly tradition during its two previous seasons and the third season looks to be just as addictive and heartwarming.
I hate football, which is why I never imagined I would enjoy Welcome To Wrexham. The series follows the titular Welsh football club after Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds bought it in 2020. The club has a passionate,...

Colman Domingo never imagined he would be “a 100 of anything.”
“The fact that I’m one of the 100 most influential people in the world feels like I have a lot to live up to, and I want to because I don’t take that lightly,” Domingo told Variety on the red carpet at the Time100 Gala Thursday night. “The fact that someone in some committee believed that I’m impacting many people on this planet, I feel like now the work begins even more so. I know that I have to be even more mindful and thoughtful about how I create and the work that I do.”
Hosted by Taraji P. Henson at Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City, the Time100 Gala celebrated this year’s most influential figures across film, sports, music and more, including Domingo, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, 21 Savage, Human Rights Campaign president Kelley Robinson, Fantasia Barrino and Henson herself.

Michael J. Fox stepped back from acting in 2020, but the actor has now said he would consider returning to the big screen if the circumstances were right. Fox, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at age 29 in 1991, told Entertainment Tonight that he was open to the idea.
“If someone offers me a part and I do it and I have a good time, great,” Fox said. “I would do acting if something came up that I could put my realities into it, my challenges, if I could figure it out.

"Late Night with the Devil" is one of the best horror movies you'll see this year — a clever, effective, and most of all scary mockumentary that recreates the era of '70s late-night talk shows with a nightmarish twist. What if a "Tonight Show" clone suddenly succumbed to demonic possession — live on the air? "Late Night with the Devil" has the answer, suggesting that a little hellfire can be good for ratings.
Written and directed by Colin Cairnes and Cameron Cairnes, "Late Night with the Devil" introduces us to Jack Delroy (played by a very committed David Dastmalchian), a wannabe Johnny Carson who hosts "Night Owls with Jack Delroy," a New York City-based late night variety and talk show struggling to stay afloat in the late-night ratings wars. It's Halloween night, and Jack has a special show planned, in which two of his guests are a parapsychologist (Laura Gordon) and her patient,...

Writer Paul Mayhew-Archer has penned comedy drama But When We Dance based on his own experience of Parkinson’s. Here are the details:
Work has finally started on veteran comedy writer Paul Mayhew-Archer’s next project: But When We Dance, a feature length drama which was meant to go into production for the BBC over three years ago, but the pandemic threw the schedule into chaos.
Johnny Campbell is on board to direct from Mayhew-Archer’s script, while the BBC is currently finalising the cast.
The story “centres on two people with lots in common: a great sense of humour, a love of dance, and Parkinson’s,” according to Deadline.
Mayhew-Archer is probably best known for co-writing every episode of The Vicar Of Dibley with Richard Curtis. He has worked behind the scenes in BBC comedy since the 1980s, script editing shows as diverse as Steven Moffat’s Chalk to...

Mrs Sidhu Investigates follows Mrs. Sidhu (Syal), a high-end caterer with a taste for crime who solves murders and other ghastly crimes amongst the affluent residents of Berkshire.
A lifetime of being an "Indian Aunty," invisible to the elite, has sharpened her skills as an investigator: an instinct for truth, a warmth with people and a persistent sense of nosiness.
Recently widowed, Mrs. Sidhu juggles her new catering business with wrangling her wayward son, Tez (Singh), all while serving up justice to those who believe they are above the law.

Michael Parkinson, the British chat show king who was confirmed dead on Thursday, will be remembered as one of the outstanding interviewers of his generation. During his show’s 36-year run across the BBC and ITV, Parkinson sat down with some of the biggest stars of our time, attracting acclaim and sometimes controversy. Scroll on for some of his most memorable moments.
Muhammad Ali
Parkinson had three significant encounters with the greatest boxer of all time, the first of which took place in 1971. The interview, in which Ali reflected on his skill in front of the camera and in the ring, was organized before a time when publicists heavily policed celebrity talk show appearances. On hearing Ali was in the UK to promote a soft drink, Parkinson’s producer snagged the boxer on a trip to a bottling factory for a “news interview.” In reality, Parkinson and a studio audience were eagerly waiting.

Michael J. Fox was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Museum of the Moving Image’s Spring Moving Image Awards on Tuesday, where Martin Scorsese spoke about the personal impact that Fox’s Parkinson’s advocacy has had on his own life.
Looking back on the actor’s career, saying he was “stunned by the energy and force of his presence” when bursting onto the scene in the ’80s, Scorsese noted at the New York event that, “Michael was a powerhouse; he was made for movies.”
“Now if you look at Michael’s filmography, pay attention to the amount of work he’s done since his Parkinson’s diagnosis,” the director continued, pointing out collaborations with Tim Burton, Woody Allen and Peter Jackson. “And along the way, Michael not only started his foundation, which has raised so much money for research and raised just as much awareness, but...

If Hollywood ever opts to reboot “Back to the Future” without the original cast, Michael J. Fox says he’s at peace with the decision.
“I’m not fanatical,” Fox told Variety for a recent cover story on his life and career. “Do what you want. It’s your movie. I got paid already.”
But that doesn’t mean he thinks it’s a good idea. Fox also believes that Robert Zemeckis, the trilogy’s director and writer, and his co-writer, Bob Gale, wouldn’t be down with it either.
“I don’t think it needs to be,” Fox added. “I think Bob and Bob have been really smart about that. I don’t think it needs rebooting because are you going to clarify something? You’re going to find a better way to tell the story? I doubt it.”

In Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, the actor lets Davis Guggenheim inside his daily life with Parkinson’s disease. It represents the first time in the documentary space for composer John Powell, who said studying the way Fox moves led him to score the movie like a musical.
“How does he move?” Powell said during a panel at Deadline’s Sound & Screen: Television event. “I often treat action films like dance sequences. I treated every time I saw Michael moving as a dance.”
Fox is frank about how far his Parkinson’s has progressed. Guggenheim captures Fox falling down on camera, and slowing down in on-camera interviews. However, Fox’s message remains hopeful, and that was important to both Guggenheim and Powell.
“I think that’s why Davis wanted me,” Powell said. “He didn’t want it to sound dour. He didn’t want it to sound like Parkinson’s.

Michael J. Fox has been through hell, and not in the way you’re thinking.
In the last few years, his mother died, his father-in-law died, and he had to put his beloved dog, Gus, a 120-pound mutt, to sleep after more than a decade of loyal companionship. And then there was an almost biblical series of health challenges, many of them indirectly related to his Parkinson’s disease.
“I broke this shoulder — had it replaced. I broke this elbow. I broke this hand. I had an infection that almost cost me this finger. I broke my face. I broke this humerus,” Fox says, pointing to each part of his fractured body, before concluding with a wry snort. “And that sucked.”
That’s to say nothing of the spinal surgery he underwent in 2018 to remove a tumor, a visit to the hospital completely independent of the falls he experiences more...

As we slide into the 2023 Summer movie season, a new release takes us back to another one, now 38 years old. And while in recent years you could say that a major studio “owned’ the Summer as Paramount did last year with the Top Gun sequel, or as Marvel Studios has done (along with some characters licensed out to others) a couple of years prior. Oh, but the Summer of 1985 was pretty much owned by an unlikely cinema superstar, Michael J. Fox. For a week or two his “star vehicles”, Back To The Future and Teen Wolf were respectively numbers one and two on the box office charts. But his streak wasn’t limited to the big screen, as his “day job” on the NBC sitcom “Family Ties” had a safe perch in the top ten Nielsen ratings. But now he’s perhaps best known for his battle to defeat the...

For the first night in Amsterdam, the metal titans showcased three songs from 72 Seasons, including “Lux Æterna,” “Screaming Suicide,” and “Sleepwalk My Life Away,” with the latter two receiving their live debuts.
Elsewhere in the 16-song set, 1984’s Ride the Lightning, 1986’s Master of Puppets, and 1991’s self-titled LP (aka “The Black Album”) were equally represented with three songs each, while no more than one song was played from any other albums.

Spoiler alert! Season 2 of “Welcome to Wrexham” is set to get the Hollywood ending the first one failed to deliver.
This being Wrexham, however, a last-minute plot twist isn’t out of the question.
It’s hard to imagine that even the Welsh soccer team’s A-list owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, could have anticipated the edge-of-your-seat, unscripted spectacle created by this unlikely union.
“That was the most dramatic thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” a breathless Reynolds said after the 3-2 win over Notts County that put Wrexham on the brink of promotion from the National League, five steps below the Premier League. “I will never be the same again.”
When Tinseltown met a former mining town in Wales, sparks flew. And even if Reynolds and McElhenney recognized the entertainment value of a fly-on-the-wall documentary about a historic but down-on-its-luck soccer team run by two actors...

There was a point in the '80s and '90s where Michael J. Fox was on top of the world, reaching highs that few actors can ever say they've reached. Between "Back to the Future" becoming a global hit at the same time his hit series "Family Ties" was on the air, with "Teen Wolf" set to give him yet another box office smash as this was all going down, he was the star of the moment. That stardom extended well into the '90s. That is, until the actor's long battle with Parkinson's began, which pulled him away from the spotlight for the better part of three decades.
Fortunately, Fox is back with an uplifting, entertaining, and truly cinematic documentary called "Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie," which is due to arrive on Apple TV+ in May. I had the great fortune of catching the doc during this year's SXSW in Austin,...

The Sundance Film Festival has often been called one of the world’s most important documentary marketplaces, with 39 of the past 65 Best Documentary Feature contenders (60) either beginning or continuing their road to the Oscars in Park City, Utah. Examples include “Summer of Soul,” “Flee,” “Writing With Fire,” “Honeyland,” “The Edge of Democracy,” “American Factory,” “Time,” “The Mole Agent,” “Crip Camp,” “Rbg,” “Of Fathers and Sons,” “Minding the Gap,” and “Hale County This Morning, This Evening.”
Two of those–Questlove’s “Summer of Soul” and Netflix’s joint venture with Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions, “American Factory”–won the award. Four of this season’s nominees —“All That Breathes,” “Fire of Love,” “Navalny,” and “A House Made of Splinters”—played the festival in 2022. Climate change, human rights violations, competitive mariachi, and manned flight to Mars are only a few of the subjects addressed by this year’s eclectic non-fiction slate.

Robert Downey Jr spoke about the relationship his late filmmaker father shared with director Paul Thomas Anderson, admitting that he was a “tad bit jealous” of their connection.

Lars von Trier is not melancholic about the state of his career after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Described in press materials as a “lovingly irreverent portrait of the life and career of maverick filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. that evolves into a larger meditation on art, mortality and healing generational dysfunction,” the new Netflix documentary feature “Sr.” that premieres December 2 on the streamer is all of that and more. In fact, it is also a primer on making amends and achieving forgiveness, finding both Robert Downey Jr. and his dad copping to and elaborating on their life-altering drug addictions and considerable demons and — in so many words — apologizing to one another. It’s also an opportunity for Junior to give his dad the farewell he deserves. Thus, viewers are left with the feeling that the biographical aspect of the somewhat surreal film was ostensibly a pretext designed to lead to the bonding and mutual absolution at the film’s heart. The effect is rather magical.
Indeed, Downey Sr.

Michael J. Fox was in denial for years after his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis.
The Canadian star, 61, was honoured with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, an honorary Oscar, at the Governors Awards in Los Angeles over the weekend.

Michael Parkinson has shared his opinion on the interviews from his old talk show.
The broadcaster, who is 87, was invited on to BBC Breakfast on Thursday (4 November) where he talked about his new book, which was written by his son.
During the interview, Parkinson was asked about his talk show, which he presented from the years 1971 to 1982, and then again from 1998 to 2007.
Parkinson, who is widely considered to be one of the best talk show hosts of all time, was asked by Naga Munchetty: “Do you get sick of seeing the TV clips?”
He replied: “Do I get sick of it? Absolutely. I don’t recognise the person.”
Elaborating, he replied: “It’s a disguise, this is a disguise. All of it. You’re not yourself at all. It changes you. No matter how considerate you might be of the problems of being famous, it changes you, and it’s bound to.

A house to themselves. Michael J. Fox and his wife, Tracy Pollan, are opening up about their new lives as “empty nesters.”
The happy couple walked the red carpet at this year’s A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Cure Parkinson’s Gala at Cipriani South Street in New York City on Sunday, and they spoke with Et’s Rachel Smith about their marriage and their kids.
“It’s an empty nest, but it’s not really an empty nest ’cause they’re all back tonight,” Fox shared. “But we all get together enough that we’re not heartbroken.”
“[However], it is a new stage in life to be, to have all the kids gone,” added Fox, who shares four kids with his wife of 35 years — son Sam, 33, twin daughters Schuyler and Aquinnah, 27, and daughter Esme, 20.
“Yeah, [we’re] empty nesters,” Pollan added. “Well, it’s not as empty as you...

It’s been a tough year for Michael J. Fox, but he remains as cheerful as ever.
The Canadian actor, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, sits down for an interview with People, talking about experiencing multiple injuries and recovery periods recently.
Fox recalls, “It got worse. I broke my cheek, then my hand, then my shoulder, had a replacement shoulder put in and broke my [right] arm, then I broke my elbow. I’m 61 years old, and I’m feeling it a little bit more.”
Fox’s nearest and dearest insist the injuries don’t necessarily mean his disease is progressing any faster though, People reports.
The “Back to the Future” star got an infection after surgery for his broken hand, and because he temporarily wasn’t able to use his hand, this led to balance issues and falls.

Doctor Emmett Brown and Marty McFly reunited for one more whirlwind adventure at New York Comic Con on Oct. 8. As part of a "Back to the Future" reunion panel at the convention, Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox sat down to reminisce about their days in the DeLorean. Before the actors could even take their seats, they were met with thunderous applause from the audience, who were delighted to see the iconic sci-fi heroes reconvene 37 years after the original 1985 "Back to the Future" film.
During the panel, Lloyd and Fox happily joked about their days filming with each other and their instant chemistry behind the scenes. When asked about the first time they met, Lloyd explained that it was the first day of shooting. Fox added, "It was the first day of shooting. You were literally outside of the DeLorean. [The director] said, 'Here's Chris. [Here's] Mike. Go.'" Lloyd added, "There was immediate chemistry,...
