Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched Season 1, Episode 8 of Disney Plus’ “WandaVision.”
Whoa, baby (witch)! In the penultimate episode of the truly wild, labyrinthine ride through television’s past that “WandaVision” has turned out to be, we found out that Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) wasn’t just “a baby witch obsessed with sitcoms and years of therapy behind her” through the ever-scathingly honest magical-girl-next-door Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), she’s also “a being capable of spontaneous creation.”
Finally, nearly six years after the Maximoff twins’ introduction in “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Wanda’s superhero name was uttered for the first time in the MCU: The Scarlet Witch.
But, why exactly was the sorceress using the occult to… play the perfect suburban sitcom housewife and “make breakfast for dinner?” In Episode 8 of the Disney Plus series, aptly titled “Previously On,” we get a glimpse of the who...

Based on the national bestselling novel of the same name by Stephanie Danler, “Sweetbitter” stars Ella Purnell, Tom Sturridge, Caitlin FitzGerald, Evan Jonigkeit, Eden Epstein, Jasmine Mathews, Daniyar and Paul Sparks.

If hope is the ugliest word, then hopelessness must be the runner-up. Sweetbitter Season 1 Episode 5 shows us just what hopelessness can drive people to do.
Ella Purnell (Tess), Daniyar (Sasha), and Katerina Tannenbaum had a big part in turning this episode into pure gold.
Their emotions, their pain, and their chaos were so wonderfully executed on-screen that they got a tear or two out of me. Exceptional work on an insanely good episode about an insane night.
However, you know what they say: there's a thin line between genius and insanity.
Let's break down the episode together, shall we?
The first scene where Will yells at Tess for making everything about her seemed strange on multiple levels. We don't get much of Tess's personal thoughts unless she talks to someone else.
In actuality, Sweetbitter has been using Tess's eyes and creeper skills to reveal the other stories surrounding her because...

Starz’s new half-hour drama “Sweetbitter” has given actor Daniyar a couple of firsts.
Not only is it just first time being cast as a series regular on a television show, but it is also a departure from his typical “bad Russian guys,” he tells Variety.
On the show, Daniyar portrays outspoken back waiter Sasha, who works with Tess (Ella Purnell) in a busy New York restaurant. Like his character, Daniyar is also gay and a Russian immigrant, which he says helped him immediately relate to the character.
“It felt to me like, ‘Ok, I think I can apply myself to it and apply my life experiences to it right away,'” he says of the role. “This character is so incredible and so dynamic. I think he’s larger than life and a real force of nature. It was incredible to even have an opportunity to play him and...

At the risk of stating the obvious, television caters to two senses: sight and sound. Starz’s “Sweetbitter,” about a young woman’s beginnings in the restaurant industry, wants to also focus on taste. The series uses creative visuals to try and conjure up taste memories in viewers, and the phrase “sweet, sour, salty, bitter” becomes something of a mantra in the second episode. It’s an interesting choice that helps to liven up what could have easily become a run-of-the-mill story.
Based on the novel by Stephanie Danler (who also serves as an executive producer and writer), “Sweetbitter” follows 22-year-old Tess (Ella Purnell) after she spontaneously moves to New York City, alone and without a real plan. Despite being an English major and only having experience in a small coffee shop, she snags a trial basis job training to be a backwaitress at a prestigious Manhattan restaurant. From there,...

A wide-eyed young woman relocates to New York City to expand her palate, both literally and figuratively, in Starz’s new drama Sweetbitter. Is the series adaptation of Stephanie Danler’s buzzy 2016 novel — which premiered Sunday — something you’ll want to gobble up right away?
Before you answer, a quick recap:
We meet young 20-something protagonist Tess (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) as she’s packing up and moving to Manhattan from Ohio with little more than her clothes and her car. Her acclimation to the Big Apple involves moving into a rundown apartment, selling her ride to...

Where would a television series be without its exciting and exotic costars?
Exactly the same place an extravagant dinner would be without its tasty side dishes.
That's why in getting to know costars Jasmine Matthews, Daniyar, and Eden Epstein I wanted to know how they saw their characters by way of what side dish they believed would best exemplify their role.
Matthews plays Heather, a woman she describes as a bit of a mean girl. There is more to her, of course, but as Matthews is also playing one of the Heathers in the upcoming Paramount series, Heathers, you have to wonder if she's being typecast!

The opening scene of “Sweetbitter” is the kind of cheesy, clichéd start you’ve seen far too many times: A young woman leaves her Midwestern hometown and moves to New York City. Without any money and left to mooch off a friend for a place to stay, she sells her car and goes looking for any job she can find. When she finally sits down for an interview, it’s not just any interview. It’s special. This place is different. Her boss is different. What she thought was a stepping stone could be exactly what she was looking for…
And yet, “Sweetbitter” never grows beyond its basic beginnings. Stephanie Danler’s adaptation strains, at times, to make its cartoonish mix of restaurant servers feel unique, but everything that’s special about this story is only labeled as such by the show itself. We’ve seen it all before, so many times over,...

Sweet. Salt. Sour. Bitter. Umami. Now your tongue is coded.
Sweetbitter tells the story of Tess, a 22-year-old who arrives in New York City ready to pursue a new life. When she’s invited to train at one of the best restaurants in the city, she thinks she’s found a steady income and a safe place to wait.
But Tess is quickly intoxicated by the chaotic, adrenalized world behind-the-scenes: tasting expensive wine, exploring dive bars, and learning who she can trust.
In Season One, we follow Tess along the path of the L train circa 2006: the prestigious Manhattan restaurant where she serves an upscale clientele, an industry dive bar, a corner bodega in Williamsburg, and an East Village apartment with a bathtub in the kitchen.
She came to the city without a friend or ambition because she wanted more from her life. Underneath the oysters and champagne is...

Television dramas set in the world of the restaurant industry haven’t had a great track record (remember AMC‘s “Feed The Beast“?), but Starz is going to the plate (sorry, not sorry) with “Sweetbitter.” And I have to say, this is pushing all my buttons hard enough that I’m going to give it a shot.
Based on the novel by Stephanie Danler, the show stars Ella Purnell, Caitlin FitzGerald, Tom Sturridge, Paul Sparks, Evan Jonigkeit, Daniyar, Eden Epstein and Jasmine Mathews, and follows a young woman who arrives in Manhattan, and joins the swirling restaurant scene.

If the Steven Soderbergh-produced “The Girlfriend Experience” taught us anything, it’s that if you’re in a Starz series and a young hopeful professional in a cutthroat industry and a fashionably dressed Paul Sparks character is your boss, it might be best to keep some distance.
“Sweetbitter,” the latest drama set for a May release date later this spring on Starz, takes its cue from the 2016 Stephanie Danler novel. Tess (Ella Purnell) is an ambitious young New Yorker making her way through the kitchens of Manhattan, whose tastes lead her into some dangerous situations in and outside of work. It might be set in 2006, but this looks nearly as crisp as anything Starz has put on air in recent years.
Sparks, fresh off a strong supporting turn in “Waco,” plays Howard, the restaurant manager who interviews Tess. The series ensemble, aside from Purnell, includes “UnREAL” Season 3 star Caitlin FitzGerald,...
