Following in the wake of Searching and Missing, the next “Screenlife” thriller on the way is titled Resurrected, and it comes courtesy of Searching producer Timur Bekmambetov.
Deadline reports today that XYZ Films has acquired North American rights to Resurrected, which is being billed as a sci-fi thriller. Dave Davis (The Vigil) stars in the film.
“Plans for the film’s release have not yet been disclosed,” Deadline notes.
“Resurrected is set in a near future where the Catholic Church has found the secret to resurrection. They only grant a second life, however, to sinless believers under 65. Stanley, whose son was the first to be resurrected, finds the awful conspiracy behind the secret to eternal life, and now the Church will stop at nothing to prevent him from exposing the truth.”
Egor Baranov (Netflix’s S’parta) directed the pic, which was co-produced with France’s Logical Pictures (The Deep House), in association with Pulsar Content.

Russian-Kazakh multi-hyphenate Timur Bekmambetov has teamed up with MarVista Entertainment, Endeavor Content and Pulsar Content on a slate of feature films in his pioneering Screenlife format that will be presented to buyers at the TIFF market.
Bekmambetov told Variety during the Toronto Film Festival, that the rapid growth, critical recognition and box-office success of Screenlife films – which take place almost entirely on smartphones and computer screens – prove the format is “more than just a gimmick.”
“It is the first time the presence of Screenlife movies at a major film market is so prominent,” he said. “Just a few years ago, film festivals and industry events used to have only one or two [Screenlife] pictures in the program or in the sales slate, but now it’s already multiple studios and distributors producing and promoting dozens of movies set on a computer or a smartphone screen.”

To mark the release of The Blackout: Invasion Earth on 28th December, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on DVD.
Directed by Egor Baranov. When the end comes for civilization, it will not be terrorism or nuclear war that causes it, but ‘The Blackout’. An unexplained phenomenon has struck the Earth. Contact between most towns on Earth has been severed. A small area in Eastern Europe is the only location that still has electricity.
When military forces venture outside, they discover a shocking truth – corpses everywhere. In stores, in cars, on roads, in hospitals and railway stations. Who or what is destroying all life on Earth? And how long can the last outpost of mankind endure? It’s up to a crack squad of troops to investigate, venturing into a no-man’s land to confront the threat, whatever it might be – and exterminate it at all costs!

Leave it to the bloody Russians to show everyone how to make an epic alien invasion flick… Over the years I have become aware of the fascinating knack that our friends over in Russia have of making just the most outlandish awesome epic movies. Night Watch and Day Watch are two of my favorite “vampire” movies (I’m still not sure they are vampires) out there. Earlier this year Why Don’t you Just Die came out which was a hell of a good time and I refuse to apologies for getting some guilty pleasure from that semi super hero flick Guardians.
I think the reason they are so good at making these epic movies so well is because they either don’t care about budget or they are just amazing at stretching their budget…...

While international audiences have gotten used to Russian auteurs on red carpets from the Croisette to the Dolby Theatre, where directors such as Andrey Zvyagintsev and Kantemir Balagov (“Beanpole”) have scooped up prestigious awards and Oscar nods, more and more Russian filmmakers are focused on making a splash in the global market.
Buoyed by high-octane actioners and genre titles with slick special effects, international sales for Russian films have been rising roughly 20% per year, according to film promotion body Roskino. During the Cannes virtual market, many foreign buyers may be tempted to give the country’s commercial fare a second look. “It’s the perception that needs to change,” says Central Partnership CEO Vadim Vereshchagin. “Our productions are at the same level as the European productions right now.”

Russian director Vladlena Sandu’s upcoming TV series “Identification,” the pilot episode for which plays Tuesday at Roskino virtual market, Key Buyers Event, starts with four naked female bodies, each with the same tattoo on their neck, found by police in a refrigerator truck on the border between Russia and Finland.
Cut to three years later in Moscow where a young woman named Valeria who is an immigrant from the Kyrgyz Republic, and a recent convert to Islam, is arrested. Under her hijab she hides the same tattoo as the murder victims.
Co-written by Sandu with screenwriter Nikita Ikonnikov, “Identification” – which screened as a pilot at Series Mania last year and more recently at Berlinale Series – is a crime drama spiced up with thriller elements centered around the acceptance of “immigrants and national minorities in contemporary megalopolises,” says the show’s producer Evgeniy Nikishov, co-chief of Moscow’s Premier Studios.
