On Tuesday night, “Downward Dog” bid farewell to TV. For now.
The short-lived ABC sitcom only got eight episodes on network television — still surprisingly more than you would expect for a show co-anchored by a dog pontificating on the true nature of “loyalty” or “boundaries.” But what makes the show’s disappearance from the airwaves so disheartening is that it had much more to offer to an audience beyond the bevy of dog owners who watched the show with their four-legged friends at their side.
It’s impossible to boil down this show to one simple takeaway, but “Downward Dog” did truly capture the worth of seeing the world through different eyes. Martin the dog became the conduit through which the audience reevaluated many of Nan’s (Allison Tolman) interpersonal relationships as well. But despite having an animal in the title, the lasting ways this show will resonate for fans...

During his stint at Ultra Singapore a few weeks back, Jauz seized the opportunity to premiere his then unreleased remix of “Sleepyhead” by indietronica band Passion Pit. In the wake of deadmau5’s comments that he wouldn’t collaborate with the Shark themed producer, Jauz is rising above with the release of his Passion Pit remix in full.
As we previously heard from the Ultra live rip, Jauz delivers a solid rework of “Sleepyhead,” and fans will be excited to hear a high quality version of the remix. Kicking off with twinkling synth melodies and a plodding bassline, the “Feel The Volume” producer works in the altered vocal track from the original song, before moving into lighthearted future bass drops with rubbery plucks and 8 bit arpeggios.
Channeling his inner Marshmello, Jauz offers up a future bass re-imagining of Passion Pit’s 2009 song, retaining enough of the original’s identity while...

Who would’ve thought that a film about a flatulent corpse would be so popular? The answer: Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, directors of “Swiss Army Man” starring Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano. After premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to positive reviews, the “Daniels” won the festival’s U.S. Directing Award. The film was then picked up by A24 and had a stellar theatrical run, garnering $4.2 million at the box office.
Now, “Swiss Army Man” is set to be released on Blu-ray, and IndieWire has an exclusive behind the scenes clip where the directors test out the farting corpse for the “motor-butt” scene. Check it out below.

We’ve already heard lots of good things come out of Ultra Singapore since last weekend, with Marshmello unveiling new material while deadmau5’s full set surfaced for fans who missed out on the action. During his performance at the massive festival, Jauz opted to test out a new future bass rework of indietronica band Passion Pit’s “Sleepyhead,” and thanks to a new live rip we have our first preview of the remix.
Jauz opens his remix with a twinkling synth melody layered over a plodding bassline while the vocal hooks from Passion Pit’s original are pitched up over top. Following a brief build-up, he takes the song into future bass territory with a Marshmello-esque drop, complete with stuttering chords, 8-bit synth leads and half time trap beats.
The Shark themed producer delivers a solid update with his “Sleepyhead” rework, crafting a new arrangement around the original vocals for a fresh production.

Every so often, a film is so innovative that it sends audiences running. Such was the case when “Swiss Army Man” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where the tale of a despondent island castaway (Paul Dano) and the talking, farting corpse he discovers and befriends (Daniel Radcliffe) inspired a seriously divisive responsive. No one is walking out now: “Swiss Army Man” led the specialty box office last weekend, (beating out the highly anticipated “Neon Demon”), and opens nationally July 1. It’s quickly becoming the breakout story of the summer. But while its directors are technically first-timers in the feature-length realm, they’re hardly newcomers.
The film’s success is largely due to its odd premise, dark humor, and — above all — a unique aesthetic that’s both tonally offbeat and profound. That aesthetic was honed by directors Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, who go simply by “Daniels,” during their rise...

Swiss Army Man, which hits theaters this Friday, has been making waves with its already-infamous title as the odd, farting corpse drama that shook and divided Sundance this year. Following a hopeless man (Paul Dano) stranded on a deserted island who finds a companion in a talking corpse (Daniel Radcliffe). One can see our review here. The minds behind the madness are the directing duo Daniels — Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, hence the name — and while this marks their feature debut, the pair have been working together for years.
Beginning in 2010, the two created a Vimeo and uploaded the official video for The Hundred in the Hands’ song “Pigeons.” From there, they spent the next five years crafting an assortment of commercials, music videos, skits, and short films — all seemingly working towards the distillation and realization of their collective cinematic voice with Swiss Army Man. It’s reassuring that even after spending a large chunk of 2015 making radio-ready pop music with the likes of Justin Bieber, Skrillex can still throw down a set of bone-rattling bass music when the situation calls for it.
Now that Edc Brasil has wrapped up, a direct recording of his performance at the festival has begun making its rounds on social media, and it’s definitely worth watching. Mixing grating bass wobbles with saccharine melodies and borderline chipmunk-esque vocals in the style that Skrillex is known for, the performance succeeded in energizing the thousands-deep crowd in attendance on the evening he played.
Replete with remixes and edits of tracks from the likes of of Avicii, Fetty Wap and A$AP Ferg as well as a whole host of originals, his set made for a spirited return to the style that made him famous back in 2010-2011.

At a humble 20 years of age, Madeon has managed to take the music scene by storm. Most people associate the French producer with his spirited, disco-electro dance sound. However, his indie rock and pop-influenced tracks have also helped him become one of the most respected individuals in the industry. He has worked with the likes of Lady Gaga, Coldplay and Dan Smith (Bastille), amongst many others, and has paved his own path to success, earning the title of “boy wonder of dance music.”
Madeon initially garnered worldwide acclaim by means of his “Pop Culture” mash-up and continued to impress with his skillful productions like “Technicolor,” and “The City.” Currently, he’s riding high on the success of his debut album, Adventure. It features the hit singles, “Pay No Mind (featuring Passion Pit),” “You’re On (featuring Kyan)” and his vocal debut, “Home.”

Adventure, the debut album for French Wunderkind Madeon, takes listeners on a colourful and whimsical musical journey. It represents three years of hard work on the producer’s part, and it certainly shows. Every single note and vocal is crafted to orchestrate a soundtrack to an imaginary world. One which is filled with good vibes, catchy pop sounds, and a lasting state of euphoria.
Kicking off the 12-track LP is a prelude titled “Isometric.” Winding scales prepare the listener for the adventure ahead, progressing towards a sneak peak of the signature Madeon break. While brief in length, it creates anticipation and a yearning for what’s to come. Following that is “You’re On,” which was also the second release from the album. It highlights the soothing R&B vocals of Kyan, which ride a 100 bpm wave of pop melodies and synths.

Chicago – With music festivals continuing to explode in Chicago, the 2013 North Coast Music Festival (Ncmf) felt like it learned some lessons from master fests like Lollapalooza but needs to keep paying attention.
When I attended Ncfm’s first night this year (Friday, Aug. 30), I first noticed the alcohol lines and how no one was in them. That’s because this crowd was primarily under 21, so it’d make sense that most of its booked acts performed Edm (electronic dance music).
Even Friday headliner Passion Pit only played an Edm set. Their appearance at all was in question because their gear was trashed by the rain. Ncmf evacuated that night due to dangerous weather and resumed after a couple hours. Friday also featured The Disco Biscuits and Mac Miller.

Passion Pit performed an hour-long set last night at the Ed Sullivan Theater for the Live on Letterman webcast. The band had to get by with DJ-assisted sets these past few days after a major thunderstorm damaged most of their equipment at the North Coast Music Festival last weekend. Judging by their hour of material last night, it looks like things are on the mend for the electro-pop group. Their live stream included mainly Gossamer material and is available to watch in its entirety. You can check out the setlist below: Live on Letterman setlist: I’ll Be Alright The Reeling...

Do you like Passion Pit? Do you like tacos? Congratulations, you're a member of the human race. But congratulations also because we have a documentary about them for you! Passion Pit, that is, but it was funded by Taco Bell, for whom Passion Pit recently soundtracked a commercial. Because nothing says “strip mall tortillas” like upbeat indie-pop. The folks over at Pitchfork pointed this one out to us: apparently they sometimes have stuff about music on their website, or something. Anyhow, the 50-minute doc was directed by Sam Jones, who 10 years ago made the Wilco documentary “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart,” but who hasn't been heard from since. This piece showcases their recent SXSW performance, alongside smaller L.A. group Wildcat! Wildcat!, and also features interviews with the band, particularly frontman Michael Angelakos, who is not really as upbeat as his music suggests: the doc chronicles some of...

Thirty Seconds To Mars won a Vma on Sunday, but viewers who simply tuned into MTV for the telecast likely had no idea.
The band's award for Best Rock Video, which honored the song "Up In The Air," was presented on the pre-show before the festivities officially kicked off. During a visit to the HuffPost Live studio the day after the VMAs, lead singer Jared Leto told host Ricky Camilleri that fans should express dissatisfaction with rock being sidelined on the music network.
"Rock music deserves a place there," Leto said. "I don't think people will be bored by it. But we live in a world right now that seems to want to be anesthetized, that seems to want to just feel one thing. It's this slight sedation."
HuffPost Entertainment editor Kia Makarechi pointed out that the tide might be turning with the popularity of pop acts like Passion Pit and fun.

Lollapalooza 2013 kicked off Friday afternoon in Chicago with only brief rain, hordes of bare bodies and music that ranged from tremendous to truly awful -- in other words, it was a pretty typical Day 1.
Story continues below
The (presumably ticketed) fest-goers who arrived early when gates opened at 11 a.m. were among the first Lolla fans to check out the damn-near impenetrable 8-foot steel fence erected to keep jumpers out of the 2013 fanfare.
Early morning rains had made a mess of the field, so officials were spreading mulch around the soggiest parts of the park and taping off others to avoid and all-out mud mess.
Things proceeded on with relative order until a brief rain shower soaked Grant Park a little after 2 p.m. Despite the downpour, the fields didn't quite devolve into the all-out mudslide like they had in years past. After the 2012 storm evacuation mess, this year Lolla...

Dan Black has leant his songwriting genius to the likes of Kid Cudi, Imogen Heap and Mikky Ekko, but it's the words he's penned -- and sung -- himself that are once again front and center.
Black's breakout hit "Hearts" features Kelis, which makes sense given that he and the "Milkshake" singer wrote the track together. "She rang and I heard that she wanted to write with me, just some stuff for her," Black said from Paris in a recent interview. "She was in Spain, so I flew out to Spain. She had rented out a place just down the beach, and it was super low-key. We just sat in her living room with a laptop and a microphone and weirdly wrote a lot of stuff. One of the tracks we wrote was 'Hearts,' and I sort of thought, 'Wow, that would work great for me.' So at the end,...

Beyonce's "Standing On the Sun" leaked on Thursday, giving July 4 revelers at least one beach-party anthem to play during festivities next week (other than "Blurred Lines," "Get Lucky" and "Treasure," of course). This thing sounds like it should accompany an ad for Barbados. (Sorry, Rihanna.)
"Standing On The Sun" is hardly new for Beyonce devotees: The track was teased in a commercial for H&M (as one does), and Beyonce performed the new song at a concert in Belgium back in May.
"You and me are standing on the sun," Beyonce sings and sings and sings, while steel drums plink away over a Passion Pit-y melody. Listen to "Standing on the Sun" above. No word yet on when Beyonce will release her new album.

As if trying to prove his own diversity, and your own inability to pin him down, Evan Andree has released another Ep that takes him in an altogether different direction yet again. Whether it was intentional or not, Evan seems to be proving himself quite the talented chameleon. Now these aren’t drastic switch arounds; like, I don’t know, going from being a roots blues act to a dubstep infused death metal band, or rap to purest soulful folk – but they are considerable shifts that show a depth of talent at Andree’s fingertips.
Now, I reviewed his two previous releases this year, Here and Here, and as stated prolifically proving a point, he’s back again with some new songs and a new sound. For those unfamiliar with those EPs, the first sported a very prominent pop-centric indie with the subtlest hints of Passion Pit,...

Comedian David Cross pops up every once in a while on the Internet, whether it be on Super Deluxe or Bonnaroo365, but the well-travelled comedian now has a permanent online video home. Before you enjoy Cross in the upcoming Netflix season of Arrested Development (just three weeks away!), it's worth examining Fkr.TV, a hybrid music/comedy channel founded by Cross and Frenchkiss Records founder Syd Butler. Though it is not affiliated with YouTube's Original Channels, Fkr.TV uses a similar format. It features an established name in the role of executive producer, provides a regular stream of original content, and, as evidenced by the channel trailer, hits on subjects (such as music, kids, and cats) that make the Internet go round. The music comes from Frenchkiss, a New York-based label that helped discover celebrated indie bands such as Passion Pit, Bloc Party, and The Hold Steady. Fkr.TV hosts...

We'd like to thank Detroit's own charming rock duo Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. for lifting our spirits this morning. It's not just their infinitely likable Ep "Patterns" that's got us in a good mood, but a new remix and video for one of their singles that appeals to the nostalgic nerd in all of us.
"If You Didn't See Me (Then You Weren't On The Dancefloor)" was already getting heavy play on our stereo (well, our Spotify playlists), but an alternate version translates it into 8-bit video game music -- you know, like the soundtrack to a super old Nintendo game with graphics that now seem more Stone Age than '80s. According to Gizmodo, the band used a simple plugin to turn the original song into the Midi version.
But there's more to the music than meets the ear, explained Daniel Zott, one half of the band.
